Customer Reviews:
Mind blowing music from Jarrett's American quartet!.......2002-10-19
..."El Juicio", recorded in July 1971, has a youthful exuberance and liveliness rarely found in Jarrett's subsequent albums ... Jarrett's American quartet is one of the essential post-bop ensembles, composed by strong-minded individuals who gave the band a powerful sound and an intensity rarely found in any jazz era.
Dewey Redman plays some of his best solos up to that day, and he sounds specially charged in the explicit Ornette Coleman's tribute "Piece for Ornette". It is important to acknowledge Ornette's influence on the quartet, which proved that the new conceptions in jazz were finally breaking through, and new sounds emerged to express this radically new, evolving language. Charlie Haden, another one of Ornette's associates, shines throughout the album with a firm pulse, always giving the band a sense of direction. Paul Motian, arguably the most underrated member of Bill Evans' classic trio, shows that he's a true master of jazz, capable of creating strong grooves and giving emotional fuel to the soloists at the same time.
My favorite song of "El Juicio" is the opener "Gypsy moth". Its opening theme is probably one of best themes Jarrett's ever written, it sounds strong and lively, reflecting the pulse of everything that was happening with the world then. The song is introduced by Jarrett's huge chords resonating with Paul Motian's immense two-beat groove, then Jarrett comments on the melody and plays a precise, attacking solo. Then Dewey Redman plays the theme on soprano, and takes a splendid solo full of fire. Listen closely to this song; even its final seconds are a thrill. Afterwards comes "Toll road", built around a riff played in unison by Redman's tenor and Jarrett's soprano. Motian's drums are rhythmically looser in this track, and especially in the title song, where he shows that he's one of the great modern drummers. Listen to his solo in "Pre-Judgment atmosphere" for a taste of his powers. Redman takes an impressive, Ornette-ish solo, but the surprise remains Jarrett's exciting solo, a fine proof of his (heavily underrated) soprano playing. "Pardon my rags" is a solo-piano tribute to Scott Joplin and the early grand masters of jazz piano like Jelly Roll Morton and Willie 'The lion' Smith, ... This last remark makes me want to discuss the heavy influence psychedelics and acid-rock had in late 60's-early 70's jazz, but that's a subject matter of a totally different article. "Pre-Judgement atmosphere" is exactly that: a recreation of the ambience that could be found in the early stage of death, and it sounds as a South-American tribe on strong ayahuasca ..."El Juicio" starts with a memorable theme, and Jarrett's awesome melodies are heightened by Paul Motian's free drumming. Jarrett's incredibly percussive piano solo sets it apart from the rest of the album, and its ecstatic moments remain the peak of the album. Finally, "Piece for Ornette" builds around what seems to be one of the greatest riffs Ornette Coleman never wrote, and features a massive tenor solo from Dewey Redman and fine soprano playing from Jarrett. Also, the interplay between Jarrett's soprano and Dewey Redman's tenor reminds us of the importance Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry's simultaneous playing had in modern jazz.
Overall, this album is a great way to start listening to Jarrett's american quartet, and remains the foundation of much of what we would hear afterwards from Jarrett. If you dig this album and want to get deeper into this indispensable period of Jarrett's work, you should go directly to ECM's "The survivor's suite", generally considered the quartet's finest studio effort, and Impulse's "Fort Yawuh", recorded live at the Village Gate and featuring some of the wildest playing ever from Jarrett and Dewey Redman. Enjoy!

2 1sts in One.......2006-02-18
This album contains two Keith Jarrett "1sts" -- his debut recording as a leader, and an album of material from his first session with the classic "American Quartet". Both were recorded for Atlantic Records and are among his better albums for that label. While Jarrett has gained a reputation as a (perhaps overly) serious and self-conscious artist in the years since, these albums are permeated with energy, reckless experimentation and a youthful sense of fun.
Life Between the Exit Signs (tracks 7-14) was recorded in 1967, when Jarrett was still a member of the innovative Charles Lloyd quartet. His musical partners here are bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian; through their previous associations, these two pinpoint the key influences on Jarrett during this time (Ornette Coleman and Paul Bley). The interplay within the trio is fairly free with lots of give-and-take, though not as sophisticated or telepathic as it would become on masterpieces like Mysteries and Fort Yawuh. The compositions -- all Jarrett's except for the standard "Everything I Love" -- vary from dissonantly melodic to outright catchy. Jarrett's late 60s propensity for gospel-infused playing over rolling, funky vamps (a la "Sombrero Sam" or "Love-In") is largely absent.
El Juicio (tracks 1-6) was recorded about 4 years later, and draws from the initial recordings of Jarrett's "American Quartet". (Most of the group's later recordings actually feature 5 or 6 members, but the 4tet moniker stuck.) This group was actually an outgrowth of the previous trio, with the great Dewey Redman joining in on reeds and occasional percussion. The quartet was a huge stylistic grab-bag, especially on its earlier recordings, but here that wild eclecticism works. Every musician except Haden doubles on various percussion instruments. Jarrett plays quite a bit of soprano saxophone; Dewey adds some of his trademark Chinese musette and (on 1 track) alto saxophone. The album begins with "Gypsy Moth", anchored by a funky groove and a very catchy, upbeat theme. Jarrett offers some nice two-handed gospel-infused playing and then Dewey follows on alto. (The only time he played this instrument with the group, I believe.) "Toll Road" and "Piece for Ornette" both feature convulted, sing-songy themes and Jarrett on soprano playing off Dewey's tenor. "Pre-Judgment Atmosphere" is a fun collective improvisation with various percussion. It leads into "El Juicio", another nice Ornette-ish tune (with Jarrett on piano) before turning into a somewhat diffuse ethnic-flavored collective improvisation. The short solo piano piece "Pardon My Rags" isn't included on this reissue, but worth seeking out in some form.
Overall this CD is recommended to Jarrett fans, particularly those who like the American group and/or his more avant-garde leanings.

A Classic Remastered Very Well.......2006-08-17
I'm a big fan of Willie colon and Hector lavoe since i was kid playing my father's records, cassettes, and 8-tracks back in the day and now seeing fania records coming back in 06' with the remastered albums its like taking me back to that time except that these discs sound a lot clearer and this album alone proves that as you can clearly hear more of the instruments (Seguiré Sin Tí piano for example) and the vocals are clear. very well done disc i highly recomend if you are a fan or thinking of replacing the old cd/cassette/8-track (the record on the other hand is worth every penny to keep)
Ritmicaly Awesome.......2004-06-30
El Juicio and Cosa Nostra, are very ritmical and perfectly orchestred by Willie, the voice of Lavoe gives to all songs brightness and invites you to dance salsa, it is real hot music.
A MASTERPIECE (it still sounds good after 30 years).......2004-05-24
This album is simply a masterpiece. Along with "Cosa Nuestra" and "LoMato" are Willie's & Hector's best work. All tracks are good. Sadly that Hector is not alive, because a reunion would have been great. To all you salsa afficionados, this is what Salsa supposed to sound like.
Africa to Cuba to Puerto Rico to New York City.......2001-07-26
It was a wonderful reunion to listen to this masterpiece. Of course, my bias is that I can in vivid memory identify the song "Aguanile" with giving me a love affair for the phenomena of rythym in '72 while I was still in diapers! Mr. Colon, Lavoe, and the rest sure did a wonderful job of preserving the Africa to the New World Rythym evolution. Excellent.
This record is sweeter than a chocolate bonbon...........2000-06-25
Hector begins this dynamite album by taking you in a lyrical journey (literally) throughout latin america. His ability to Sonear (improvise) shines like a gold nugget in the first track, AH AH Oh No. The beat starts slow, but builds on this album in every song. The next track, Piran~a is a passionate cry for a clear message from a girl...while I doubt the message ever came accross, the song sears the ears with an excellent trmbone chorus, a sexy piano solo (perhaps he was still smokin' them bananas), and plenty of beat to keep the dancers in the room shaking it. There are romantic and slow moments, Son~ando Despierto and Seguire sin ti are rather ironic love songs, and prove to be the slow points of the album. Si la Vez plays on the theme of lost love, and will leave you dancing depressed as you contemplate where she could be while you dance with another. The album has two more songs which will have you turning the volume up so high the neighbors will be complaining. Timbalero is a scorching song set a fire by an orchestra that spews more heat than a jet engine. Aguianile takes slasa back to its african roots and will leave you in a trance. The final song, a mellow insturmental, will finally calm a listener down after being taken on this amazing journey that is el Juicio. No doubt this one of the best albums by one of the best salsa bands, you will be kicking yourself if you pass this one by........

Solid salsa set from Willie Colon.......2006-04-18
This early-'70s salsa album (from 1972) features bandleader Willie Colon edging into his glory years, with famed singer Hector LaVoe crooning atop the churning, rhythmic sound of Colon's tight, muscular band. I wouldn't say this is the best album to come out of the era, but it's still pretty good. Worth checking out.
