Miles Davis's long relationship with Columbia began with the 1955-56 recordings heard here, as the trumpeter's suddenly rising career curve was consolidated after the move from the independent Prestige label. The band on this CD is the first of Davis's classic quintets, the extraordinary group with John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones that still stands as the definitive ensemble in modern mainstream jazz. The music ranges from the smoldering emotions of Davis's distinctively muted ballad performances to the searching quality already apparent in Coltrane's keening horn, while the band's unique chemistry is apparent on "Dear Old Stockholm" and the novel counterpoint of Charlie Parker's "Ah-Leu-Cha." --Stuart Broomer

In 1955, Miles Davis signed on with jazz powerhouse Columbia Records. With alto and tenor saxophonists Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, drummer Philly Joe Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, and pianist Red Garland, Davis released 'Round About Midnight, which evinces even more clearly what a phenomenal unit Davis was nurturing. Stylistically, Midnight encompasses standards (or soon-to-be standards) such as "Dear Old Stockholm," "Bye-Bye Blackbird," Tadd Dameron's "Tadd's Delight," and Jackie McLean's forward-thinking composition "Little Melonae." Miles and company reprise "Budo" from the historic Birth of the Cool sessions. The standout track is Davis's Harmon-muted reading of Thelonious Monk's ballad, "'Round Midnight, which is still a Miles standard bearer. Three alternate takes round out the session: "Two Bass Hit" and "Sweet Sue" feature adventuresome solos by Coltrane that preview his masterpiece "Giant Steps." And Garland moves away from his Ahmad Jamal pianisms with his introspective ivory ticklings. If you want to hear the origins of post-bop modern jazz, this is it. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars awesome quintet...legendary recording.........2007-06-20

Miles Davis first recording with Columbia Records. Miles, trumpet, John Coltrane, tenor saxophone, Philly Joe Jones, drums, Red Garland, piano, and Paul Chambers, bass. If there was a jazz Hall of Fame(why isn't there one?) they all would be in it. From that first note of 'Round About Midnight(a Thelonius Monk composition) this album just blows you away. Add this to your jazz collection and you'll find yourself listening to it over and over. A masterpiece. If DaVinci played jazz, it would sound something like this. I put this one along with Porgy and Bess and Kind of Blue as the essential Miles.

3 out of 5 stars jazz and why it's hot.......2007-03-10

This 'Round about Midnight, is not as good as some of the jazz I've heard. It sounds like Miles just got out of a treatment center and he simply asked John Coltrane to help him up.I think jazz should be free flowing improvised and jazz man, you know. Example, John Coltrane's: Love Supreme.

5 out of 5 stars It's Miles at his best............2007-01-10

What can I say...It's Miles at his best.A must have for any jazz lover.

5 out of 5 stars A Miles Davis Masterpiece (Review Based On Original Tracks Only).......2006-08-06

There are great Miles Davis records (Milestones, E.S.P, Sketches of Spain), and then there are unforgettable ones. Along with Kind of Blue, 'Round About Midnight falls into the "unforgettable" category. Why? First and foremost, the title track, while very good performed by Monk, is found in its definitive version on this record. Miles' brooding muted trumpet sets the melody. Suddenly, the track explodes in a burst of energy and Trane completely steals the spotlight with ione of those solos that make him the best saxophonist in history. After that, it's back to the unforgettable melody. Ah-Leu-Cha picks the pace up severely, some very interesting chord progressions on that one. A fine reading of one of Bird's best. Things slow down again with the ballad All of You, again Miles plays the melody expressively, and Trane solos furiously during his spots. Standard Bye Bye Blackbird comes next, and I can say without a shred of doubt in my mind it's the best song on the album. If you can't tell it's a classic by the opening piano solo, you're beyond all help I can give you (which, to be fair, isn't much). Tadd's Delight is the closest this album comes to a weak song, and even then it has a nice melody. Dear Old Stockholm closes things out, and though normally I'm not a fan of Stan Getz, I love the group's reading of this tune (particularly that harmony part... it will stay in your head forever!) The CD reissue comes with four bonus tracks (Two Bass Hit, Little Melonae, Budo and Sweet Sue Just You), which range from brilliant (Little Melonae) to average (Sweet Sue).
One last thing I'd like to comment on is the album's remaster. Up until a few days ago, I had only heard this album on a scratchy old vinyl. And while normally I don't really notice sound quality (except if it's painfully obvious), the remastering job for 'Round About Midnight is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars The Beginning and the End.......2006-07-16

Miles' debut album for Columbia Records - and the last LP by his original quintet - is very much in the same vein as the trumpeter's final Prestige sessions, which were in fact recorded almost simultaneously. There's nothing really new here - even the title track had already appeared on a Prestige LP in a nearly identical version - but the Maestro and his sidemen (John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums) play with verve and conviction, stamping their collective personality on the last all-covers program in Davis' catalogue. While subsequent releases such as MILESTONES and KIND OF BLUE are undoubtedly superior on all levels, 'ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT still deserves a place on any Miles Davis fan's shelf - even if the only thing distinguishing it from its predecessors is the record label.

5 out of 5 stars What have I been missing?.......2006-06-25

Firstly, I am not a jazz fan. This is perhaps because I have heard too many cool people running on at the mouth about the subject (especially about their cult of improvisation), and haven't taken the time to just sit down and have a listen. Well, shame on me! I checked the old rev. of this CD from the library on a whim (there he was, in that devilish red and black light), and wow. I did not hear the novelty of improvisation. I did not hear someone trying to sound different than everybody else. No, I heard sublime interpretations of traditional themes, rather than the chaotic pomposity that my prejudices had warned me against. I had to go buy this marvellous, and quite listenable production, because I didn't want to have to wait to get this breath of fresh air from the library. Buy this for your medicine cabinet; I'm sure the doctor will approve.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it Again, Anyway. It's way, way too good........2005-06-17

No one should need to have the importance of this disc explained to them and from a sonic standpoint, the quality here is from the same remastered and restored tapes that produced the Miles/Trane box. What takes this elsewhere are the extra tracks from the recording sessions, and they are each terrific, and the second bonus disc with a live date of Miles with Monk delivering an absolutely mystical "Round Midnight," plus a concert from Pasadena California with the Trane quintet.
Regarding the Monk selection, the way that each man inspired the other is perhaps nowhere near so claerly evident as on this track. By itself, it would justify the price. Following with the never before released concert from Pasadena makes the second disc worth releasing on its own merits. The goof-ball MC sounds like such a cornball in his intro to Davis and his band, that you will find yourself squirming in humour. Imagine Jack Benny introducing P Diddy. Actually......
well, anyway, the band kicks in and there is an undeniable energy that they bring to the audience. Hopefully, as is the case with Hendrix, there are lodas of concert tapes from this quintet as well asmany of the other formations Miles put together. Miles was a live player. The studio records were phenomenal, but he knew the dialectics of live performance better than any jazz artist before or after him.
replace your other copies of this essential document. What you are familiar with will delight you, and the new stuff will astound you.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated and supple hard bop from the summit.......2006-07-23

Kenny Dorham was a musician's musician, the thinking person's trumpet player (though the emotions are personal and deep, even if not instantaneous or obvious). His tone is light but round and always centered, capable of sounding vulnerable and breathy one instant and dynamically brilliant and virtuosic the next. Since Kenny is the least "showy" of trumpet players, my hunch is that this Dorham-led date will not impress the uniniated overly much and that it should probably be purchased after one of his later studio sessions or his dates with Art Blakey ("Live at the Cafe Bohemia") or Horace Silver ("The Jazz Messengers"). Once you've acquired a taste for the Dorham sound--which, incidentally, can be addictive--the pleasures of the present session will be all the more apparent.

Each of the tunes not only features first-rate (if understated) solo work but attention to compositional details that were frequently missing in "hard bop" performances of the era. Listen to the title song--with all of Monk's transitions and intertextual motifs intact--or to "Night in Tunisia," which may be less dramatic and forceful than the version with Clifford Brown and Art Blakey at Birdland but is ten times more musical.

The underrecorded, melodically lithe J. R. Monterose complements K. D. in the frontline as effectively as Hank Mobley, and the overrecorded Kenny Burrell has never sounded more inspired and assured, almost overmatching the more subdued approach of the other players. Bobby Timmons restricts his solo time along with the block chord cliches, turning in some of his most tasteful work on record.

While this may not be "the" Kenny Dorham recording, it belongs in the top 5--which, speaking of the pantheon of all-time trumpet greats, is probably the short list on which Kenny himself deserves mention.

5 out of 5 stars The uncrowned king.......2002-03-20

Kenny Dorham was such a great trumpet player, but even considering the fact, that his recording period spanned about 20 years, starting with important contributions in the forties, when he played with Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and others, it quite seems, that he largely was taken for granted by the wider audience, which paid most of the attention to more glamorous players, namely Dizzy and Miles. But listening to Kenny Dorham's Blue Note recordings you will notice, that he had it all: A beautiful, slightly bittersweet sound, really nice, long lines and a great knowledge about chord-progressions. Of course, he also was a great composer. This latest reissue from the RVG-Series offers for the first time the possibility to really listen to all recorded material from that live-date. You will love it, especially if you already own the two Art Blakey CDs "Life at Café Bohemia", which also feature Dorham at his best. About the personnel of this date, I'd like to notice the presence of Kenny Burrell on some of the tunes. He had finished his first own album ("Introducing Kenny Burrell") just the day before and he sure was in a playing mood. the choice of J.R. Montrose is also a very interesting one. this relatively obscure tenorist really has nice ideas and a pleasant, light sound, somehow similar to Stan Getz or Zoot Sims and he really takes care of business. Bobby Timmons on piano already had his block-chord style, which later would become famous when he was part of Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Sam Jones on bass and the to me completely unknown Athur Edgehill on drums contribute everything necessary for a good groove, so let's say, that I really enjoy this music: The tremendous swinging versions of "K.D.'s Blues", "Night in Tunisia", "Who Cares", a very relaxed "My Heart Stood Still" and gorgous ballad interpretations of "Autumn in N.Y." and "Round Midnight". Considering the originals, I think, that "Monaco" is the most interesting one. It's based on an idea, which first appeared on another Dorham original ("Minor's Holiday") from the above mentioned Art Blakey date and Dorham's first Blue-Note Album, the fantastic "Afro Cuban", which I also reviewed. Enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!! Classic Jazz.......2002-02-26

I just picked this album up today and I was blown away. First of all, despite being a mono recording, the sound is awesome; clarity and depth are excellent. I have shied away from previous mono recordings, as they tend to get muddied, but this music suffers no such fate. Kenny Dorham sounds as good as I've ever heard him, and Bobby Timmons was just beginning to shine. If you are a fan of classic jazz, this is a must-have for your collection.

    Very Cool Miles

The Miles Davis I listen to most, after Kind of Blue. All time best recordings of Round Midnight and Blackbird. You feel like Miles is there in the room with you, Harmon mute and all. You feel his loneliness, melancholy and great joy. Communicates true emotion like no other Miles recording.

Miles Davis first record with a major label.

    The SACD is even better.
I can't understand why this doesn't sell better?

5 out of 5 stars FROSTED AT THE SPEED OF VICE.......2000-03-07

This magnificent "cool" jazz record contains the first appearance of the "new" Coltrane. His playing on the previous Davis records had been promising but a little sloppy, Miles carried those records. Here he has clearly become Superhuman. Kicking junk might've had something to do with it according to Miles' autobio. The version of "Round Midnight" on this record, as great as it is, is arguably topped by the magnificently beautiful version on the LEGRAND JAZZ record. So click on over and pick that up if you think perfection can't be improved on.

5 out of 5 stars Miles launch into stardom.......2000-01-15

This version of Round Midnight is one of my favourite pieces of all time. Why..? Because its sharp, singin and continues to reach, up there. It cries and smiles at the same time, is dark yet light, because it carries so much feeling that would take many moons to explain. Enough said, the rest of the tracks are splendid too, and if you like Miles muted horn and Trane in his early stages, plus one of the most excellent rhythm sections ever in jazz, this is it. Listen carefully to the easy intro and you might notice the great potential which is about to unfold, but like always with Miles, each thing in its own little time.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......1998-12-25

Miles began his 30 year run at Columbia records with this album, a bop masterpiece. "Round Midnight" and "Dear Old Stockholm" are perfect bookends, showcasing Miles at his muted best. Every member of the band shines. The version of "Bye Bye Blackbird" is the best I have heard. Don't miss this one!

3 out of 5 stars Relatively decent, pared down Powell.......2001-07-12

During Powell's years in Paris in the 1960s, he continued to play and perform, occasionally emerging with solid recordings ("Don Byas/Bud Powell-A Tribute to Cannonball", Dexter Gordon- "Our Man in Paris", "Bud Powell in Paris", etc.). While still formidable, Powell's playing during this period was pared down. The jaw dropping and otherworldly pre-1953 brilliance was evident only occasionally. Replacing it was a more spare, more Monk-like sound and approach, a tendency for slow and medium tempos and very little left hand. This recording is a good example. A flash of the old Powell on "52nd St Theme". The late Powell everywhere else.

    4 out of 5 stars Lately Bud.......2000-09-04

Most people think that Bud's playing days were over by the end of the 1950s. Most people are wrong. Bud spent the 60's in Europe, mostly France. This album and others have strong playing, though there are no new pieces here. This album contains several Monk pieces. He's joined by Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke. The three musicians were a regular attraction in Paris, known locally as Les Trois Patrons.

For more on Bud Powell, look for Gerard & Sarzin's forthcoming book, Mostly Bud, containing transcriptions of Powell's solo and group performances.
