Two things that mark Charlie Hunter's career are the singular style of his 8-string guitar playing (it sounds more like an organ) and the fact that each album finds him trying new things. For example, 2001's Songs From the Analog Playground was a vocals-oriented affair that featured Norah Jones, Mos Def, and Kurt Elling with some covers, and follow-up Right Now Move (his debut for Ropeadope) features all original instrumentals played by a new band. The 13 songs here are loose-limbed but relatively concise numbers anchored by drummer Derek Phillips's buoyant playing and Hunter's innate ability to groove even as he cranks out catchy melodies. The duo is superbly matched with trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, harmonica player Gregoire Maret, and saxophonist/clarinetist John Ellis, who play so well together that you won't even notice the atypical alignment used up front. Indeed, as the group chatter on "Oakland" makes abundantly clear, Right Now Move is less about thinking and more about being fun and funky. --Tad Hendrickson

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-29
John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.
A marvelous interpretation!.......2005-07-05
This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

Customer Reviews:
the harmonica grates..........2004-11-29
I've had this album for quite a while now, and I thought that with repeated listens it would grow on me, that the grating fingers-on-blackboard effect the sound of that chromatic harmonica produces would gradually fade. But no, it still wrecks the album for me. I do like "Oakland", and I think the rest of the album would be good if I could ask my CD player to filter out the harmonica.
To me Hunter peaked with Charlie Hunter, Duo, and Analog Playground -- the Blue Notes.
Friends Seen and Unseen was a step back in the right direction. Right Now Move was unfortunate...
A Great Release.......2003-08-08
Wow! Charlie Hunter just gets better with each release he puts out. His unique playing (playing an instrument that is half guitar and half bass can be characterized as nothing more than unique) is kicked up another notch here. It sounds like Hunter has gained confidence since his "Songs from the Analog Playground" release last year. The songs are upbeat, and his playing has a little more edge to it, a little more pizzazz. Hunter has always been a great guitarist, but if he keeps going the direction he's headed in, he'll be a giant.
Hunter's style of music is to mix bass and guitar at the same time. This is easily heard in the opening of "Try". There are some incredible finger gymnastics going on to play eight strings like he does. But the song doesn't focus on Hunter for very long. In jump the horns and this song is off and running. You can tell just from the sound of the music, that these boys were having fun cutting this tune. It's all through the album. Hunter's solo on "Whoop-Ass" is exactly that, showing what an accomplished musician he is. John Ellis' own solo is out there as well. "Changui" is a Latin-sounding song with another great solo from Ellis. Listen to Hunter's guitar under that solo, it sounds almost like steel-drums. Curtis Fowlkes gets a few minutes to shine as well. His trombone solo in "Freak Fest" is great. Not often you hear a trombone take the spotlight, but Fowlkes does a great job. Fowlkes puts a mute in the bell, and belts out another solo in "Wade In the Water", right after an incredible solo shot by Hunter. Check out his bluesy outro on that song. Derrek Phillips on drums puts an amazing performance on throughout the whole album. He is rock solid and scary. Gregoire Maret steps in with harmonica on most of the tracks. He has a sound reminiscent of Toots Thelonious.
Hunter and the boys turn out a great performance on "Right Now Move". I think Hunter is starting to reach out and experiment more with his sound. I've always been impressed with his stuff, but I don't think never as nearly impressed I am with this release. He's been playing with his band for the last few years. Whatever he was looking for, I think he found a winner with this Quintet. This is a solid album from everyone in the band. It is truly a group effort and a must have for Hunter and jazz fans alike.

His best yet.......2003-04-20
Charlie Hunter's a hard guy to pin down. Sometimes going for the minimalist funk route (his duo outing with Leon Parker), the world music approach (his Bob Marley cover album), and the funk-vocal move (his last), he hasn't always been 100% successful. What he's lost in precision and focus, he's gained in breadth of presentation, and when it all comes together optimally, as it does on Right Now Move, the results are nothing short of spectacular.
This is by far Charlie Hunter's finest album to date. It combines a glorious loose-limbed ease with some (for Hunter) toughness that has sometimes been lacking in the past. The addition of Curtis Fowlkes on trombone and Gregorire Maret on chromatic harmonic add a needed blooziness and grit to the basic jazz/funk proceedings.
There's also a wonderful world-music sensibility to several of the cuts--Latin on "Changui," South African on the classic Hugh Masekela vehicle, "Wade in the Water," and West African on "Mali." These cuts don't necessarily reproduce typical musical moves associated with their world regions as much as they slyly evoke their sensibilities. This is especially true of "Mali," which sounds authentically West African with little actual playing in a Malian mode.
Special mention should be made of John Ellis. He's grown tremendously as a player, especially on bass clarinet. Check out his work on "Le Bateau Irve," where his timbre and fluid playing set the tone for one of the more memorable tunes on the album. But it's all good; no slackers, not let-ups. A continuation of some very fine jazz releases in the first part of 2003.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing, with such talent on show........2005-05-10
The performances are generally not very inspiring. Catherine King is usually smooth on the ear, but here, her exaggerated use of period English accent is annoying and distracting.
The recorded sound is also overly bright for my taste.
In all, there are perhaps three tracks on this disc I would enjoy hearing again. The rest are well below expectations.
So So.......2003-12-24
This is a selection of some of Dowland's most famous pieces performed in appropriate Renaissance style. Unfortunately, the quality of the performances is mixed. Some pieces are performed very well, others not. The singer on this CD, Catherine King, is inconsistent. In some songs, like "Come again, sweet love..." she is good. In others, her diction and phrasing is suspect. I may also be put off by her apparently strong Scots accent. Choice of tempi in several pieces is poor. A couple of Dowland's most famous songs are represented by instrumental versions, which are nice, but pale compared with the actual songs.
