Add Jimmy Bruno and Joe Beck's Polarity to a list of stellar recent jazz guitar duo albums that includes Jim Hall and Pat Metheny's self-titled disc and Sylvain Luc and Bireli Lagrene's Duet, among others. To a large extent, the uniqueness of the sound on Polarity is due to the instrumentation: Bruno plays a custom-built 7-string guitar and Beck emotes through an even more unusual "alto guitar," which extends his low and high ranges and makes him sound at times almost like a piano. The novel guitars aren't the only thing that sets this record apart, though. Bruno and Beck, both enormously accomplished and technically astute, blend here with a chemistry that may be surprising to jazz guitar fans familiar with the difference between their styles. Aside from Beck's beautiful solo rendition of "Tenderly" and some delicate soloing by him on "Estate," the album mainly sets Bruno's dexterous and inventive bebop runs against Beck's lush chordal accompaniment--an arrangement that brings out the best in each player (as on the luminous version of "Eleanor Rigby" and a sizzling take of "Cherokee") without compromising a thing. --Ezra Gale

I love it!.......2007-06-29
The CD has been playing on repeat in my car since I got it. I love it! There is so much variety in the songs, and they're all so catchy!!
The one thing that I really love is that it breaks the traditional drums-guitar-bass-and vocals only set up with the occasional other instrument. I think one of the songs opens with a brief bagpipe intro. hehe. bagpipes!
If you've heard something from the Wedding and are thinking about buying their CD, do it!! You won't be let down!! :-)
Fails to disappoint.......2007-06-10
From the first few cuts I heard from this album, I knew this band was brewing something worthy of attention. I had high hopes for this production - and I was not disappointed. From it's brass intro to it's bluegrass ending, The Wedding's "Polarity" will give your ears a musical banquet that will leave you begging for more. Simply put: Rock just doesn't come any better than this. The guitars are crunchy and thick, the bass line is addictive, the beats are fresh and the vocals amazing. It's everything you've come to expect from today's alt-rock recording artists - and then some. The Wedding adds a few features that demonstrate true musicianship and musical talent like brass, bagpipes, strings and piano.
The lyrics of this album are simply amazing - deep, witty and divinely inspired. "Say Your Prayers" is, personally, one of the best written songs as of late, but they all have that one line that just goes beyond your ears and sticks to your brain and finds it's way into your heart. So, whether you're banging your head to one of their harder rock songs or letting the softer, piano-oriented songs caress your ears, you know you've experienced something else. This is a fantastic album with amazing quality (the production is fantastic) and it also possesses a quality that's rare these days - playability. I still haven't skipped one track - every song is great.
So, if you're looking for something fresh in an all-too-common genre, this is the place where you stop looking.
Polarity is an awesome album from start to finish.......2007-05-08
This album is not only The Wedding's best album, it is also my favorite album. I have over 1700 songs in my Itunes library and I'm constantly going back to listen to Polarity. I've listened to this album at least once every day since it has been released. From start to finish this album will not dissapoint. There is not 1 style followed through out, each song is a little different. I would recommend this album to everyone!
Great Sophmore Album!.......2007-04-19
The Wedding's sophmore release is incredible! They have matured so much! "Polarity" offers nothing but the best in rock music. There are three tracks on the album that I don't care for (that's why I gave it four stars); however, the rest of the songs are top notch.

Sizzle and Smoke.......2006-03-15
Jimmy Bruno is quite possibly the hottest bop guitarist that nobody has heard of, and whose amazing chops place him firmly in the circle of great Philly jazz guitarists like Pat Martino. Listening to Bruno's blistering single-note solos on cuts like "Summertime"(!!!) remind the listener that bebop has always been about taking instrumental performance to the outer limits of the imagination.
And yet... Bruno's fretboard pyrotechnics are beautifully balanced by the rich, warm textures of Joe Beck's artful accompaniment, the net result being an album that simultaneously sizzles and smokes.
This CD and the rest of Bruno's work should be in every jazz guitar-lovers collection. Next step for me: a Roger Sadowsky "Jimmy Bruno" model archtop guitar.
Jimmy Bruno & Joe Beck - Polarity.......2004-02-14
This is a superb recording. It's warm and intricate without being dull or over technical. It is both for guitar players, because of the lively and interesting playing of Bruno's solos and the rich underpinning of Beck's alto guitar playing rhythm, as well as for the general jazz listener because of the smoothness and variety. It's impossible not to like their version of Eleanor Rigby. The warm tone of the guitars welcomes you in to the music. Be careful of this recording - you'll play it so often that it will get inside your head and won't leave room for other things!
5 stars are not enough.......2002-12-13
OK. That day after the amazon.com samples I went out and bought the album (sorry Amazon!). I came back home late that night with my copy of Polarity in my bag and I was really tired and was dreaming to go to bed. But I was also curious to hear just few notes from this cd just to be sure of what I heard here on Amazon.com. Well, I sat down on my sofà planning to go to bed in a couple of minutes. But something went wrong. I couldn't decide to stop this marvel and go to bed. It is a record of shere perfection. I ended up to listen to all the music contained in Polarity, than after a joious listening I went to bed. With still the echo of that perfect music in my head. Best guitar record I bought in a couple of years. Believe me.
Samples are enough to judge........2002-12-12
Here is an example of the fact that sometime samples found here on Amazon[.com] are enough to judge an album. This is a perfect one. These two players mesh beautifully in a setting which is one of the best to fully appreciate the depth of jazz rhythms, melodies and harmonies. Two guitars are enough to feel the swing, to feel the b5's and the b9's under your skin. Jimmy is a fantastic bopper, and Joe Beck comp with the right attitude and taste. I'm just going to buy this one. Bop!

By far Haujobbs best work........2005-05-16
I've been a fan of Haujobb from the late 90's and when this album is definately the best of all. I like the interludes leading into the next song as you go through the album. The atmospheric melodies mixed with the vocals you've grown to expect and industrial beats at the speed of 150+bpm all thrown into some kind of urban dance mutation make it so interesting. Its by far off the original stuff but is such a good album. If your one thats hard to please, I recommend listening to it two or three times over and you will grow to love it very quick. This album is well worth the money.
Your Ears Will Never Be The Same!.......2005-03-04
Intelligent Industrial has never been done better than these guys right here. The complexity, wierd sounds, and Daniel Myer's attracting voice will make this album you're new audiotory drug. I never ever have or will get bored of this album. Its on my top 5s! You won't regret it spend every penny on it, its worth more than the price shown above.
A gem not to be passed over.......2005-02-06
First off, I am completely incredulous at how many people think the vocals are off-tune. Ever listen to hardcore? Think that's all offtune as well?! Well, the vocals are definitely not beautifully harmonic or anything like that, but they are definitely not cacaphonic. They make use of artistic dissonance! The lyrics are consistantly good; the only ones I dislike is the vocoded set at the end of CD - last song. The tunes are spunky, interesting, varied, breath-takingly textural, and a style of dark not available everywhere. The best part is the fact that they are the very opposite of boring and repetitive. This CD is a fantastic example of DnB, IDM, and the other styles all incorporated here. Obviously, if you can't appreciate the themes and techniques employed here, don't buy it. But if you can, this will be one of your favourite CD's.
super awesome.......2004-12-22
With '99 and VT under my belt, I was ready to move onto more Haujobb.
Same as the 2 other albums, this one was a different style.
I dare say I enjoy this style the best and hope the new Haujobb album in 2005 will be like this one.
Haujobb has yet to disappoint me.
If you like EBM/techno/industrial/electro/etc... treat yourself to some Haujobb.
its grip just couldnt hold me for long..........2004-07-11
I was riveted when I first heard this album. I had never heard of Haujobb before and was simply amazed by what they had put out. It was such a breath of fresh air after a long swim in gritty harsh :Wumpscut: and the innovative but slightly poppy Apoptygma Berzerk. Here was a style I had never heard before. However, after hearing some of their other albums, Polarity just could not hold my attention anymore, and I am loathe to put it in my player over Solutions for a small planet, '99, or Vertical Theory. I give it 3 stars. Its kind of a progression between albums. Myers was experimenting with yet another change in Haujobbs sound but he didnt quite get it right. He comes much closer to perfection in his follow-up; Vertical Theory.
Thats my two cents. Peace.

Album Description
Norman, is actually the name of the character both Onry and Barfly (both members of Seattle's colossal Oldominion crew) have cast themselves as. More accurately they each portray polar opposite influences within the mind of their character. Though conceptual, this duo's debut album, "Polarity" is only loosely conceptual.
Current trends in rap music find groups like Anticon brushing off their art textbooks and expounding on the virtues of creative license while at the opposite end of the spectrum you'll find your M.O.P.s exercising a thug's right to be your favorite rapper. Norman credibly fuses modern hip hop's arthouse tendencies with traditional rap's more street oriented themes, while carefully avoiding either extreme.

I can't believe no one has reviewed this...........2004-02-27
This is pure northwest. I've lived here in Seattle for my entire eighteen years, and the darkness that is all throughout this album fits the city perfectly. This album is a concept album about some guy named Norman, who according to Onry Ozzborn "is the kind of guy who never listened to LL, Godsmack and Alice Cooper are what are in his headphones". The album breaks away from that at points, like on "Hiphop.Ver.1.7 " where Onry and Barfly send out a diss to east coast backpack MCs and everyone else in hip-hop who can't get used to Oldominion's weirdness. It comes full circle, like at the end when Onry and Barfly are rapping to lonely old Norman, telling "him to put the gun down".
This is one of my favorite hip-hop records ever. The only hip-hop album I can think of that has anything like the darkness and emotion in this is Tupac's Makaveli. Cop this now.
