Editorial Reviews
Jazz Times
This album has only a few lively moments. It appears that the performances are totally improvised. The players--drummer and percussionist DeJohnette, guitarist and bass guitarist Jerome Harris, pianist Michael Cain, and percussionist Don Alias--are either sensitive in the extreme, generally lackluster, or hooked on an ECM philosophy of too-subtle understatement ... there's little here that enhances DeJohnette's reputation as one of jazz's leading drummers.

5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Treasure.......2007-03-21

I had come across this album on lp in the Bargin Bin back around 1981 and, taking a chance, found it to be a pleasant surprise. I had not known of its release a few years earlier and found the music to be a bit different from earlier Santana releases. But it was a music which would grow upon a listener with each spin on the turn table. Although credited to Devaip Carlos Santana, it features many of his regular band musicians at the time. The cuts don't seem to have as much percussion as earlier Santana albums, but Carlos Santana's guitar, Tom Coster's keyboards and Greg Walker's vocals provide audio verification that it is a Santana endeavor. As mentioned by other reviewers, it is an excursion into jazz, but it is pure Santana nonetheless and it doesn't disappoint. Even Sri Chinmoy's short spoken poems are a good fit into the overall experience and appear to aid in the flow of the music without causing disruption.

I don't think you'll find any of the songs from Oneness on any of the Santana compilation albums and, this fact, coupled with lasting memories of this album finally convinced me to seek out the cd and acquire a new copy.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect fit among his best recordings.......2007-02-26

Released in 1979, Onesess is Carlos Santana's first solo album.
Although CS was not sure which musical style to follow; Fusion Jazz which he really loved, heavily inspired by John McLaughlin; His great basic Latin Rock sound; or the new Pop Rock trend. Onesess came up as a combination of all three styles reflecting the puzzled period; this artist was living in; yet a great album, perfectly picturing what a great musician and guitarist Carlos Santana was.
This album fits perfectly among his best recordings, making it highly recommended to any old Santana fan, or to any Fusion Latin Rock music lover.
Some Other highly recommended CD titles for this great artist:

3. Santana III

5 out of 5 stars Oneness - Santana at his best.......2006-08-26

Released in Australia on vinyl, but never on CD, this has to be one of the best Santana Albums ever. I think that this album was a special project for Calos and he put his heart and soul into the performance. A collection of eclectic tracks culminating in the Oneness track itsself. The way the guitar work ebs and flows is a special delight, especially when listening through high quality headphones. A must for any Santana fan!

5 out of 5 stars ONENESS: One of Two.......2006-08-01

Thought it might be fun to mention: this CD contains one of the two (in my opinion) greatest vocal-free guitar solos by Carlos Santana. It is the title track, #10: ONENESS. This, along with EUROPA from the first "Moonflower" CD...are the two greatest vocal-free Santana guitar solos, in my opinion. Moonflower CD #2, by the way, has (in my opinion) the best performance of SOUL SACRIFICE as well. Overall, my favorite "live" Santana collection is (selected tracks from) LOTUS; and coming in an extremely close second is the live CD from the legacy edition of Santana III: the final Filmore West concert.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-04-03

I'm not into Eastern Religions so I just ignore abut the first 20 seconds of this one. Other than that, what else can I say that hasn't already been said about this recording. I'm just blown away by this fantastic recording. It's just mesmerizing. A must have for all Santana fans.

4 out of 5 stars Really Neat!.......2007-04-10

This is my first Gordon purchase, and I really liked it. It is very relaxing music - good for meditation, yoga or just chilling. I like to listen to it when I'm relaxing in a nice, bubble bath. What makes this different from other CD's is that the music itself is interesting enough to make it more than just relaxing background music. I don't know how else to describe it, but I really enjoy this CD!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music to relax to!.......2006-11-03

As a Massage Therapist, I really enjoy working with this music in my office. It not only helps my client to relax, it helps me to focus on the work at hand. It's very soothing with the water sounds and wind instruments.

5 out of 5 stars Oneness Brings Inner Peace into Perspective.......2002-10-03

With the overwhelming popularity of their more recent "native-influenced" titles, such as the critically acclaimed Sacred Earth Drums, Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine, the older classic ambient titles from the Gordon's early Inner Music Series, tend to get overlooked. This is unfortunate in that these titles, and specifically Oneness, create an incredibly rich soundscape tapestry perfect for relaxation and meditation. The Gordon's masterfully weave these synthesizer laden tracks with Tibetian temple bells, Chinese wind chimes, tamboura and silver flute which effectively guides the listener into the deepest realms of blissful inner peace ! This is a great piece of work that shouldn't be overlooked !

5 out of 5 stars Great Poetry and Jazz Composition.......2007-05-17

The previous reviewer unfortunately does not know the difference between folk music and Jazz. Sundiata mixes spoken word with some great jazz and vocals. Even when there is no music the cadence of his delivery is jazz. Space: A Monologue is like an Eric Dolphy sax solo in poetic form. Sundiata is more than just a great poet, he is a great performer of poetry. This is a great CD!

2 out of 5 stars Okay, but not a strong purchase.......2000-07-09

I think Sekou Sundiata is a great poet, and I think his attempts to meld poetry with music are brave. However, it's not a very entertaining record, and I haven't listened to it more than a few times, and only spotty-like at best. The folk-ish mood of the record isn't my style, and I can't safely recommend it to anyone who's into a lot of slam poetry or "Slam" the movie. It's more of a folk music record with poems on top of it, much like Carl Hancock Rux' weak record ("Rux Revue") is a blues/folk record with poems thrown on top of it.

If poets want to attract people to poetry, don't approach it from the stance that what you're doing hasn't been done "quite this way before", so much as "it might be different, but will people I'd like to reach dig it?"

I like his poetry, and found his monologue grand. But the stuff with music (the rest of the CD) just sits there on my shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Finding Gold in "The Blue Oneness of Sekou".......2000-05-10

I heard just one song off this cd on my local public radio station and it was enough for me to jot it down and seek it out. Very lyrical, very deep, very intimate, very political, very real. One of my two favorites, "Days Going By in Broken English" addresses with great wit the cultural changes going on just out of the corner of our collective eye. The sensuality of "A Kiss in Deep Time" touched me in a special place...and that's all I'll say about that. Sekou succesfully combines spoken word w/ Jazz. A great CD, looking forward to his latest.

5 out of 5 stars so good.......2000-03-06

i heard him read and i knew i needed to find out more about him. i bought this cd and was no less impressed. he's way more than just ani's teacher. his understanding of how the sound of words and their meaning work together is incredible. he is truly amazing. i'm buying the new one too.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most talented voices........1999-04-17

Sekou Sundiata has, without a doubt, one of the most talented voices in this time. I had the pleasure and honor of hearing him perform serveral times and I was blown away. First, by discovering I liked something called Jazzoetry, and secondly by loving it. BUY THIS CD!

2 out of 5 stars Way overrated..........2004-06-28

First of all, this album is not the classic a lot of people here seem to claim it is. This is a cd for Ween fanatics only. If you don't like or care about Ween, you won't like this cd. It is mainly an hour of screaming, yelling, and disjointed singing over fast guitar riffs and jangly pop sounds. While some of the songs are really creative and good, most is just white noise. I really love Ween's later, poppier albums like "Chocolate & Cheese" and "White Pepper", so I thought I'd like the earlier stuff as well. But be warned...this sounds TOTALLY different from their post-C&C stuff. Personally, I'd recommend all Ween albums from "Pure Guava" onwards because they are all brilliant, but this one really dissapointed me.

5 out of 5 stars Aggressive, early Ween.......2002-02-15

This is Ween's psycho-punk first album. It's more prone to screeching guitar and throat shredding yelling by the Lennon and McCartney of our generation than the murky two albums that follow it. This band has the ability to be cute, offensive, touching, violent, and just flat out funny under the cover of one recording. Don't make Dean and Gene send Fat Lenny to your house-get this necessary Ween immediately.

3 out of 5 stars Good stuff to chew.......2001-07-07

I have all of Ween's albums, from their less ferocious, more approachable "Mollusc" to the hazy, floating "Pod", to this biting, fearsome beast known as "GodWeenSatan: The Oneness" Is this a good album? No, not in the sense that you can turn it on and listen to it the whole way through with a smile on your face. Is this a challenging album? You bet. If you listen to "top 40" radio, you'll miss a lot, and won't understand most of this album. In fact, you'll probably turn it off after a few seconds. There are a lot of rewarding moments, though, to be had by the discerning - don't laugh (I love you), and the quintissential "Nicole." Make sure to listen to Nicole all of the way through, without distractions.. there is a LOT going on there. If you are looking for something different, give this a shot.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the greatest artistic achievement of our time........2000-05-04

On 'Don't laugh, I love you' Ween sing the following line: "Ernest Hemingway had always been there for me - but now Ernest Hemingway is dead." It would be worth owning this CD for that line alone, but each of the 26(!) songs on this CD are filled with funny/tragic/brilliant lyrics. In a saner world, this would've been bigger than 'Thriller'.

5 out of 5 stars the best ween album.......1999-11-16

this being their 5th album after abunch of impossible to find now made at home releases they unleashed this masterpiece, how the hell could you not like this album! their style of parody is so intelligent are hard to explain yet its also beautiful and original. pray to god these guys never become mainstream.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Worth a review!.......2006-07-14

I was amazed none of the Santana-followers took the effort to review this album. Released in 1979, it must be his last of the seventies. And, surely compared to the music he made in the following decade, it's a good one.
Santana is still under the influence of Sri Chinmoy, who introduces the first track by way of meditating. Well, rest assured: it could have been worse. This moody opening gradually takes on a jazzier or funkier rhythm, with songs that sound fresh and sparkling (Jim Jeannie, Transformation Day, Cry Of The Wilderness, Free As The Morning Sun), haunting (Oneness) and even downright kitsch (Silver Dreams). The guitarplaying may be trademark Santana, but it never becomes the routinejob Carlos displays on many albums following this one. Better still: the master is - with the exception of the boring accoustic track Golden Dawn - in top shape!

        Album Description

Strut continue their re-issue program of the '70s catalogue with Oneness Of Juju, one of the most groundbreaking bands of their time. From early avant-garde jazz work on the Strata East label to their later fusions of Afrobeat, funk and spritual jazz, Oneness stand as a huge influence for today's jazz scene. Released in 1976, The African Rhythms album is Oneness Of Juju's masterpieces. Bandleader J. Plunky Branch had moved back to his hometown of Richmond, Virginia from New York and introduced R&B, funk and African percussion into his music to appeal to the local market. Topped by the soaring vocals of Jackie Holoman-Lewis, the Oneness sound became a tight, supremely soulful outfit. Includes the bonus tracks 'Liberation Dues' (instrumental) & 'African Rhythms' (45 version). 2002.

        Album Description

Space Jungle Luv was recorded and released in 1976 as the follow-up to Oneness' break-through African Rhythms set. The album ushered the band away from the dancefloor and into the realms of Sun Ra's cosmology, bringing modal jazz and ambient atmospherics into their musical mix. The funky basslines and African percussion remained but within a much more melodic setting showcasing the incredible vocals of Jackie Holoman-Lewis to the full.

        4 out of 5 stars Brilliant afro-centric funk/Jazz.......2002-05-20

Oneness of Juju have quite a following on the other side of the pond and it has been quite refreshing to see some of their classic stuff being reissued. Space Jungle Luv is a real gem of an album and features some absolutely stunning vocals from Eka Ete on River Luv Rite and the absolutely mesmeric Love's Messenger.

Love's messenger is more akin to Soul/Jazz and you could even imagine Minnie singing along to it. To top it there is also an instrumental version. Echoes of George Clinton, EWF, Mandrill and all things funky but certainly with a difference. My daughter even got quite taken aback by River Luv Rite which is saying something as she tends to refer to this as screechy waily music. Overall an excellent album, well produced and funky with just the right amount of jazz for the jazzier amongst us.

        4 out of 5 stars Understated.......2003-07-29

I listened to this CD several times when I first purchased it and nothing moved me. After a few years I have just revisited this very understated and controlled series of mood pieces and now things are jelling and the total package is sinking in. For me the CD begins at "Priestesses Of The Mist" - a contemplative and atmospheric piece that slowly builds, then subsides. "Jack In" shows DeJohnette's skills to the max; this is the fastest paced and most syncopated cut; the use of space to shape the lines by Michael Cain can sometimes be frustrating. "From the Heart" shows the group improvising through many melodies and working over several themes, again without "raising its voice." This CD takes time to get used to; I would advise you stick with it and it will grow on you. One has to accept this for what it is --- a compiliation of improv works, very exacting and deep in mood, but nonetheless rewarding for those who play it more than once or twice.

        Jack deJohnette- Oneness (ECM 1637)

The things I like most about this record are the percussion playing of Don Alias, plus the minimalist piano tinkerings of Michael Caine. DeJohnette himself is a great drummer, and so he should be. He has done the rounds of super groups many times over by now, and on this release explores textural possibilities aplenty. Everything sounds crisp and pristine. That's ECM for you. I believe that the group itself is fairly new, this being their second release on ECM, but between they have played with anyone who is anyone. But is this jazz? It all comes across as fairly down tempo and introspective, almost late night . Listening to some of this material reminds me of some of the excursions into musical spirituality that someone like Charles Lloyd has explored on previous ECM releases. That same sense of introspection, quietness though it's not as affective as Charles Lloyd would have it. Admittedly DeJohnette covers different territories as well. A track like Priestess Of The MInd with its windy atmospherics and mandala like opening, never really gets off the ground for me.This could have been an interesting track but in the end goes nowhere.

        4 out of 5 stars Worthy CD.......1999-10-10

Lots of space, and wonderful improvisation make this a very good CD. After many listenings it has really sunk in. At first I found it a little disconcerting, but after some late night driving with this in the CD player - I think I finally have comne to understand what's going on.

My only regret is this CD could have been a 5 star for me. But it's not. Why? Because I wish Paul Bley had been on piano. He really knows how to use space. Mike Cain is good, but Bley would really have elevated this to superb. Still, A wonderful effort!

5 out of 5 stars This is Jack's best solo recording........1998-08-24

Free wheeling spiritual improvisatorial jazz that doesn't conform to the standard rules. Great drums and percussion (Jack and Don Alias) plus piano playing that uses space well and is angular and thought provoking. I loved this CD and love re-listening to it. The theory behind "Oneness" is that the band improvises as a unit, not as individuals, and that concept works.
