On his fourth Blue Note release, Printup proves even further that he is a crafty and assured hard-bop trumpet soloist. He's capable of bluesy growls, surging bop, swinging runs, and lovely melodicism. As he matures, Printup also shows a willingness to engage in delightful subtleties, winks, and nods. On this record, he manages to fit swing-era covers--"Black Coffee," "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Body & Soul," "Have You Met Miss Jones?"--into a hard-bop context. Yet, something seems lacking from his own compositions: They seem forced and full of self-conscious twists and turns. Still, his voice as an improviser has grown beyond mere Roy Eldridge and Lee Morgan assimilation. Drummer Woody Williams deftly steers the proceedings with a lively rhythmic palette. Printup inches ever closer to that next level, but isn't quite there yet. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Honesty meets Technique.......1999-12-09

Nocturnal Traces has an edge because it is honest, while it is enhanced by Printup's technical ability. I have heard one too many jazz musicians interpret the music and the masters without considering their own emotions. Printup wears his heart on his sleeve and I respect the fact that in whatever he plays there is an unmistakable part of him in it. I would consider this album great but not Printup's best because I know he is not finished yet! Thanks for keepin' it real Marcus.

5 out of 5 stars Printup is unique and original!!.......1999-05-24

This is Printup at his best. His style is definately original. He sounds a little like Wynton,Miles,Freddie,Cootie,Ray Nance, Louis Armstrong, and Booker Little all rolled in one!! If you readers read the review from the cat in Jacksonville, just know that this person has no knowledge of real soul or musical integrity. You should probably be a critic!! Marcus, keep up the good work buddy!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best recordings of 1998! Printup is very soulful!.......1999-01-26

An important recording, breaks away from the conformity of his earlier recordings, and proves his great musical leadership. A great band of unknowns too, with a very unique group concept.

3 out of 5 stars Not good enough to buy.......1998-12-09

The first track is the best but after that it gets bad. The piano player Kevin Bales playes much better than Printup. Printup sounds like a typical college freshman. He uses many turns and use-less grace notes at the the beginning of lines. I dont think he one of the up and coming trumptist like many have said.
