Marcus Roberts is known for his stately, studied approach to the jazz tradition. His recordings of Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Monk, Gershwin, and Joplin all bear the formal, scholarly stamp of his playing. On this, Roberts composed all the material, so these are not renditions of standards but rather Roberts's take on the Duke. That said, Roberts's playing here is exceptional, and the compositions gracefully exhibit his knowledge of Ellingtonian compositional themes. This music is elegant--almost to the point of sounding like a classical pianist is at the keys--yet still has that suave, cool groove that characterized Ellington's work. With solid support from drummer Jason Marsalis and lyrical, inventive work from bassist Roland Guerin, In Honor of Duke is a fitting tribute--one that pays its respects, yet still forges new ground. --S. 5 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece from Marcus Roberts.......2005-05-02

I bought this CD a while ago and just started listening to it again. I'd forgotten how great it is. It's a brilliant suite of original music that I think Ellington would have loved. Duke was famous for writing music that featured the strengths of his musicians and Roberts seems to have mastered that too. Great trio work. I just love track 5 (Groove Until You Move) and the last 4 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Trio Work.......2001-12-31

One of Robert's finest recording sessions, this album wonderfully performs a modern perspective of Duke's original work. You can hear the soulful playing of the blind pianist, and the amazing solos played between Roland Guerin and Jason Marsalis. Very tight acoustic trio work, and very much unlike the conventional trio--the bassist and the drummer share an equal part with the pianist as far as the soloing, which is superb.... This albulm is unlike his earlier work and not so accessible, all the tunes on this albulm are Robert's own. ...

1 out of 5 stars I' was dissapointed.......2001-08-18

Really I think that this work were the worst from Marcus Roberts, Estoy arrepentido de haber comprado este trabajo.

1 out of 5 stars Roberts playing Monk playing Ellington.......2001-02-17

I made a mistake and bought this album without first listening to a few tracks. This does not sound like any Ellington I have ever heard. There is too much freedom for the musician to go where the musician wants to go rather, than where Ellington's music would go. You may like the album. As a die-hard stright ahead jazz fan, I don't.
