The ironically-titled Easy Living is alto saxophonist Frank Morgan's comeback album after nearly three decades of personal setbacks due to drug addiction, illness, and jail. The 1985 session was his first as a leader since 1957, when his musical style earned the Los Angeles-based youngster a reputation as the next Charlie Parker. Parker is still referenced here ("Now's the Time") but Morgan returned with a more relaxed, mature sound, by turns elegantly lyrical, as on the beautiful McCoy Tyner waltz "Three Flowers," and slyly witty, as on Cedar Walton's "The Rubber Man." Walton's trio provides the perfect foil for Morgan--Walton's piano playing is gorgeous and drummer Billy Higgins works his magic throughout the set. Walton and Higgins take brilliant turns on Wayne Shorter's "Yes and No." --John Swenson

On the Streets' third album, the conceit is that Mike Skinner's now a famous guy (and he indeed is in the UK--as he puts it, "I've sold 3 million and you've never heard of me"). So, instead of dissecting the stereotypes and prejudices of an average Joe, Skinner turns his keen eye for detail on himself, to his new life of easy drugs and easier girls, of trashing hotel rooms, and being bummed out when your record label does promotional stuff without telling you about it first. Sonically it's more polished and a tad faster, though the music's still stripped-down and tough, propelled by loud synth lines and minimal drums. Skinner's flow remains original and wonderfully sing-songy. And while it's cool to see him actually write about his current life instead of pretending he's still "street," the subject matter's a touch too similar to an anorexic debutante's diary entry to make for very compelling hip-hop. When he asks "How the hell am I supposed to be able to do a line in front of complete strangers/When I know they've all got camera[phone]s?," it's definitely tough to care too much, no matter how fun the music is. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
The new Streets album The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living, out April 25th, is a completely autobiographical record that covers everything that has happened to Mike over the past few years since he's become a well known figure in the UK. There's love, loss, scandal, violence, sex, drugs and a whole load of bad behavior and regret. This true story begins with the first single, "When You Wasn't Famous."
Customer Reviews:
Jammin.......2007-04-05
My first The Streets album. Funny, edgy, funky, poignant, cool, warm. Word art and music blended to taste. My taste.
As VIBE Magazine said, "Not on THESE streets".......2006-11-10
A few years ago, there was an explosion of sorts concerning British artists broadening rap, like Dizzee Rascal and the Streets. I really couldn't get into it though; the thing that bothered me about Mike Skinner (yes, people, the Streets refers to ONE person) is that his material didn't sound like rap to me; it sounded more like spoken word. But he does sound more like a rapper on his latest offering, The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living.
But even though the production is on point, the songs as a whole aren't that accessible. And I'm not saying that because Mike's thick accent can make things incomprehensible to the average listener (although there's some truth to that; "War of the Sexes", anyone?); it's that most of the time I really don't understand what in the world he's talking about, which is especially the case with the album's opener, "Prangin Out".
The few times where I COULD figure out what was going on, I wasn't too impressed. "Fake Streets Hats" has Mike complaining about supposedly pirated Streets merchandise (I say "supposedly" because it turns out that Mike's label distributed the hats), and "When You Wasn't Famous" is a been-there-done-that comparison of his private and public life. Speaking of that song, when Mike and friends try to sing the chorus sometimes, it's pretty nerve-racking (see "Two Nations").
I really think Mike could have done a better job than this; it almost feels like he just wanted to put SOMEthing out because now that Lady Sovereign is getting some mainstream love, he's like, "Hey, remember ME?" Let's hope he perfects his craft; maybe then it won't be so hard to make an easy living.

...dissapointed.......2006-10-21
The first two albums The Streets put out blew me away. Original Pirate Material was fresh and abstract while A Grand Don't Come For Free was full of heart-felt tracks that I couldn't help but love. It seems with this album, Mike Skinner got lazy. The music, while catchy, is hardly original and the lyrics... aren't even in the same league as the first two albums. When You Wasn't Famous, the first single is just alright. I actually prefer the Professor Green remix. This album is mostly filler, with a few good tracks like Never Went To Church. Overall, I do like this album, it just doesn't compare to the first two.
Guys talking over a beat, great!.......2006-08-13
This is a joke right?! I honestly thought this group was a hiphop parody group at first because I figured nobody could be that bad on purpose. These British rappers are hiliarous, they basically talk over a beat and it doesn't even rhyme half the time. I got given this cd for free and I still want some money back!
All right.......2006-06-11
It's the third chapter for Mike Skinner, the biggest pop star from the UK. Almost every album has been a number one if I remember right. The last album was a concept album. This album is more about the spoils of success. It's less unfocused than the previous two. "War of The Sexes" reminds me of some of the songs on the first album. Some immediate favorites are "When You Wasn't Famous" and "Hotel Expressionism." The first is about the pitfalls of become a well known act. The second is about? Not sure. Maybe about destroying hotels? "Never Went To Church" explores to two great European narcotics: alcohol and Christianity. It has a tune that is like "Let It Be" by the Beatles. We always need a record to put on and smoke weed to. Here it is! The summer looks good.

Desmond at the peak of his peak of his artistry.
The alto saxophone as an instrument of sheer beauty, impervious to influences of Parker and Konitz.
Beauty tinged with melancholy.
Music as a dream. Jim Hall (guitar) dreams along.

Customer Reviews:
Dance hits of the thirties and forties.......2003-02-28
For those of us raised on the music of the second half of the twentieth century, the music contained on this CD does not sound like music to dance to - more like easy listening music to relax to - but Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians were one of the leading dance bands of their day.
They had 26 number one hits of their own on the American charts, of which 23 can be found here. They also had two other number ones as the backing group to solo singers Kate Smith and Bing Crosby. Kate and Guy's band hit number one with River stay `way from my door, also included here. Harbour lights, although included here, was (according to Billboard) only a number two hit for Guy.
Two of the three missing (You're driving me crazy and Boo hoo), together with the song that Bing and Guy's band took to number one (You're getting to be a habit with me), can be found on another ASV compilation, Sweetest music this side of heaven. Just one of Guy's number one hits is hard to find - The last round up, although other versions of that song are readily available.
Anybody familiar with Kate's music will enjoy her song, especially as (at the time of writing this review) this is the only CD on which it is available, although it has previously been released on compilations of Kate's music.
The remaining tracks mainly feature Carmen Lombardo on vocals. He was the singer up to 1941. Although the band had many more hits after that, with several different singers, nearly all the number ones occurred during Carmen's years.
Even if you are new to Guy's music, fans of the Great American Songbook will recognise some of the songs, including Stars fell on Alabama (which I first came across via Doris Day's lovely cover), Red sails in the sunset (my favorite cover of this is by Frances Langford), September in the rain (Dinah Washington made this song her own) and Harbour lights, which Frances Langford had a top ten hit with in 1937 (it was not only her biggest hit, but possibly her finest recording), but the song became a lot more popular in 1950 when Guy's version was one of several top ten hits. It received a further boost when the Platters covered it later in the fifties - that is the version most people are now familiar with.
People may not dance to this kind of music these days, but Guy and his orchestra made some very high quality music. This collection contains 25 of their finest recordings. If you only buy one CD of Guy's music, this is the one to go for.

Released in conjunction with the opening of her Broadway show Swing! in the fall of 1999, Ann Hampton Callaway's Easy Living is an excellent showcase for her dark yet wide-ranging voice. Performing in combos of three, four, or five, the all-star line-up includes pianists Kenny Barron, Benny Green, and Bill Charlap, and features guest stars Wynton Marsalis, Nelson Rangell, Andy Farber, and Gerry Niewood. Callaway also includes one of her own songs, the slow rumba "Come Take My Hand," among the familiar ballads and swing numbers. Fans of jazz singing will love this one. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
The Best of the Best.......2006-09-20
I have all Ann Callaway's recordings, including those where she's only recorded one or two cuts on a collection, and this is her best. Consistently involving and intelligent, exceptionally well engineered. If you like this, try Sibling Revelry with her sister, Liz Callaway.
Another Great Effort.......2005-07-29
Ann Hampton Callaway has managed to issue another great recording blending an old time cabaret sound, classic songs, jazz background, modern recording quality and her stellar talent and voice. She seems to bounce her way through the lyrics and impart the jubilation, pensiveness or whatever other emotion is called for by the text.
I like some of her other recordings better but there is nothing about this one which is unlikable. It is, in a word, GREAT!
"Skylark" in particular deserves to be singled out for praise. She was singing MY song.
This is a great new discovery for me..................2000-12-10
This is be a first for me, buying a cd by A.H.C. I must report that I haven't been disappointed with this jazz singer. Ann really has the voice and style to sound perfect for this venue. I can see now why see has so many fans, she really entertains her listener.
The only dark spots I find about this cd is these few things. For one, I thought the song selection could have been a little better and two, I didn't like some of her tracks where she scatted. I thought her band gave a good performance.
I will plan to buy more of Anns' product in the near future.
classic jazz by a great vocalist.......2000-11-19
this is a great cd by ann hampton callaway - the tunes are classic and she sings beautifully with a variety of musicians. if you enjoy listening to ella, you'll enjoy "easy living".
A new fan.......2000-07-22
I was introduced to Ms. Callaway's work through Music Buddha. Delicious. Her voice is as smooth as butterscotch. Rich overtones topped with a knowing smile, much like Ella at her best. I can't wait to hear more.

A Trip Back in time...........2007-01-09
What a fascinating CD! As a fan of Quartet singing, this conjures up the original images and sounds---captured amazingly well in recordings....and something I did not know existed....That's what I get for connecting to Amazon.com! It's a clear sound, despite the age of the recordings, and it features a wonderful selection of songs and styles...I highly recommend it for 'buffs' like me....who are always searching for the unusual....thank you.....JB

Customer Reviews:
Joy of Living/Love Is a Game of Poker.......2006-11-11
As an admirer of Nelson Riddle, I can only state that this CD is just great.
Fantastic Nelson.......2006-02-19
These various cds I bought show what a student of harmonics & theory Riddle must have been.I would have to say that he & Billy May must have fed from one to the other their years at Capitol. The originality & the use of the different insturments
merely emphasize the talent & knowledge Riddle had.
THE JOY OF LISTENING.......2002-02-12
might have been a better title considering who was writing the charts and swinging the baton here! Nelson Riddle's contributions to music in his lifetime are peerless. His charts for almost every singer who's recognized speak for themselves (Nat King Cole's UNFORGETTABLE, the countless sides of perfection for Frank Sinatra that ressurected his fading career in the 50's would span some 20+years, not to mention Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Al Martino, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland and Ella Fitzgerald, to name a meager few) As a trombone player with Charlie Spivak's big band, he was admittedly just OK, but as an arranger he had no equal. He could easilly chart a ballad or a swinger; or make one of the other. Here are two of Nelson's orchestral outings from the good people across the pond at Capitol's UK arm, EMI. Among the standouts here : JUNE IN JANUARY, with an infectious yet ever so slight swing to it, YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO YOUNG, another chart he did with Sinatra, and Nelson's personal favorite song, INDIAN SUMMER. The overall mood on these first 12 sides is playful, gentleand light hearted swing. It is on the second half of the program, the GAME OF POKER sides that Mr. Riddle and the boys really let us have it. The sizzling speed of INDISCREET will have you amazed. And there is no tighter arrangement of brass in the world after you hear the flawless rendition of WITCHCRAFT here. Riddle himself penned a few of the tracks here (the elegant QUEEN OF HEARTS and the dazzling TWO HEARTS WILD, namely) and again, these sides were recorded almost three years after the first 12,(1959) so, if possible, Nelson was even MORE talented by this time (1962).
The good news for we Riddle fans is that EMI plans a similar "2fer" in late March featuring Nelson's two TV Theme albums on one great CD...watch for it! These EMI packages are among my favorite CDs in my collection; painstaking work on remastering is a given, and reproduction of liner notes and original artwork as always. Enjoy listening!
Nelson Riddle and 1960's Mood Music At Their Best!.......2000-07-18
This is an excellent album. Riddle's orchestrations of these beautiful songs only adds to their richness. I especially enjoy the "Love Is A Game of Poker" half of the album. Many up-beat tunes with swinging tempos.
THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE GREATEST NELSON RIDDLE CD........1999-04-02
I HAVE A LOT OF NELSON RIDDLE CDS AND THIS BY FAR HAS TO BE HIS GREATEST CD, I MEAN THE PORTION OF THE CD THAT APPLIES TO "THE JOY OF LIVING" , NOT THE PORTION THAT APPLIES TO "LOVE IS A GAME OF POKER" . OUT OF THE 12 SONGS LISTED I LIKED 10. I WISH THERE COULD BE MORE GREAT CDS LIKE THIS ONE!

Customer Reviews:
Poet he is..........2006-06-08
You won't be sorry that you purchased this if you love this era of music. He is a truly amazing piano player. I first fell in love with this music from the movie "Eddy Duchin Story" which is a must see. You can find yourself wrapped in a trance when you listen to this as it brings back the days..
Adults only!.......2006-06-02
Deathless classics of American popular song in creative and virtuoso performances by one of the best popular pianists of his day, presented in the original monophonic sound with just enough modern electronic processing to remove some of the surface noise without interferring with the original sound. Not for those who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
Virtuoso pop piano playing.......2006-02-12
If you watch a movie about the life of Eddy Duchin ("The Eddy Duchin Story"), you will discover how skillful Cavallaro was because he was the player in the film. Try to find this movie to understand what I mean.
He had a very characteristic personal style of interpretation.
If you do not know his style, verify if you can appreciate it in the samples of the albums Christmas (listen "Jingle Bells") and in the album "My Sentimental Heart: 1946" (listen "Lover").
The recordings of this album are old but OK, so that do not expect too much in this respect.
I like very much his "Manhattan" interpretation (that is contained in this album).
Carmen Cavalero, Poet of the Piano.......2002-11-06
Old tunes dubbed in mono. Yor get what you pay for
Poetry in Ivory.......2002-11-06
This new CD includes recordings made between 1940 and 1947. They are monophonic. After thorough re-mastering many of them still show their age. However, despite some technical flaws, this album
contains many well known standards, that made Cavallaro famous.
Performance of "Brasil" or "Dancing in the Dark',"Carioca" played by
33 year old pianist show his improvisational skills and unmatched
virtuosity as well as his characteristic ornate style. On many of these recordings Cavallaro and his band play as instrumental accompaniment for Bing Crosby , Dick Haynes or Andrews Sisters where Cavallaro remains in the background. All recordings remain a great gift to all Cavallaro admirers bringing back a flavor
of an era of big bands and unforgettable piano soloists.

Customer Reviews:
Superb.......2007-01-31
For those who enjoy light orchestral music, this is as good as it gets. A special treat is the guest appearance by Woody Herman on "Harlem Nocturne." This CD offers 25 excellent selections (over 75 minutes of music), and is a great entertainment value. An additional note: thanks and kudos to Amazon for offering a fine product at a great price, and for amazingly fast shipping.
A Bouquet of Roses.......2004-11-02
Whether you call it Easy Listening, elevator music, or as the English would callit Light Music, the music in this album contains a generous helping of the type of fare that was the staple of early FM radio stations.David Rose was a marvelous composerwhoseworks were noted for their elegance and beauty.Except for the omission of Holiday for Trombones, this album is loaded with a majority of Rose's best arrangements.
It was a pleasure to hear Holiday for Strings, One Love, Our Waltz, Manhattan Hoedown, and Gay Spirits again. If you purchased The Very Best of David Rose and found the selections lacking, this album will make you whole.
