From Jazziz
In the early '60s, arranger Claus Ogerman's signature style fueled classic hits like Frank Sinatra's landmark duet with Antonio Carlos Jobim - it's an approach that is still emulated today. By the early '70s, when a glut of jazz recordings laden with strings and background vocals surfaced (most in an effort to capitalize on the string-section appeal of some disco hits), Ogerman stood apart for his elegant melding of jazz and strings. Evidence of this is his work on George Benson's crossover hit Breezin'. Ogerman's earlier work on Jobim's landmark recording, Wave, as well as with Getz, Bill Evans, and Paul Desmond, and his later recordings with Benson, Freddie Hubbard, and Stanley Turrentine are better known than his solo and duet albums. It was producer Tommy LiPuma (then at Warner Bros.) who recognized Ogerman's talent early on. LiPuma produced an early Ogerman project, Gate of Dreams, that featured Benson, michael brecker, David Sanborn, and Joe Sample. One track inspired the producer to reunite Ogerman and Brecker for an album in 1982. "Nightwings" is from that collaboration, Cityscape. Conducted, composed, and arranged in classic Ogerman style, the album provided a unique backdrop for Brecker's impassioned solos.

This guy makes John Mayer look like a hack. And I love Mayer. Jak is my new favorite singer-songwriter,though. Sorry, John. Get this CD. You'll love it. You'll wear it out. I did.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! Great guy too!.......2005-04-07

I just heard Christopher Jak for the first time when he came to my college the other night, and i was happily surprised with his beautiful voice and great new songs. comeon, how cute is it to hear a guy singing about his dog? (check out "i dont know what you're thinking" (nevermind that the same song was used for a romantic scene in a movie, haha)plus, he was the nicest guy! it was a very small venue, so he gladly chatted with everyone who wanted to say meet him, and let me buy his CD for half price when i told him i only had a $5 on me. in conclusion, awesome sound, awesome guy, check him out!

5 out of 5 stars Great new Artist!.......2005-03-06

Christopher Jak's Album "Applause of the Rain" is simply fantastic! He has a smooth melodic voice coupled with great rifts and varied tempos you find yourself listening to this album over and over. I found myself almost internalizing it if you will - finding myself humming it in the middle of different moments of the day. Think Bebo Norman meets John Mayer and that's kind of how you might describe him. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars A Suprise........2004-11-07

I stumbled on to Christopher Jak completely by accident. He opened for a Vanessa Carlton concert I went to recently, and all I can say is wow. He really surprised me; originally I thought "Oh great, another Mayer wannabe," but he turned out to be so much more. His CD is excellent and he really has talent, unlike most of today's musical artists. Definitely give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal!.......2004-10-12

Jak Christopher is a star in the making. His songs are well crafted, melodic, and incredibly catchy. Treat yourself and buy this album now. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Living Legend Still Has the Goods.......2006-05-11

Yes indeed! This septet lineup is the perfect setting for Fathead-trumpet, trombone and bari sax doubling, harmonizing and comping beneath and around his saxes and flute. It's been a long time since anyone's tackled "Goldfinger," and it's a treat to hear it played here with Newman's sexy soulfulness. He's always been one of the great but underappreciated jazz flutemen, and "Pharoah's Gold" and "Flankin" rank with previous jewels like "Delilah" and "The Thirteenth Floor" at the top of his recorded flute canon. On "A Flower is a Lovesome Thing" Newman's tenor sax floats atop a smooth bed of harmonic horns, and "Here Comes Sonny Man" approximates the feel of a much larger band. "Sneakin' In" does just that with its slow funk, "Suki Duki" cooks with a Native American rhythmic and melodic feel, and "It Was a Very Good Year" is a surprisingly appropriate ballad choice dripping with soul.

5 out of 5 stars Divine Intervention .......2004-10-28

Hearing a truly gifted musician at their pinnacle is almost a spiritual experiance. This album, and particularly the track 'In the presence and absence of each other Part 1' defines the epitomy of musical acheivment in my eyes.

Brecker's reputation as the premier saxophonist of his time was forged on this album. Although I could go on for paragraphs justifying this statement, I'll let the music speak for itself. Lifting with emotion, montaged with endless creativity, and raising the bar on technique this album is clearly the work of two exceptional artists at their mesmerising best.

I have no more words, for I am still after years in awe of this beautiful, moving creation.....

    5 out of 5 stars Exquisite, sublime.......2003-09-25

The Jazziz review posted for this album must have been phoned in... From what I have read, Clause Ogerman initiated this album project as a concerto for jazz tenor sax & orchestra; capitalizing on any commercial trend had noting to do with it.

This album is SO beautiful. The writing and arranging is so great--I wish that this was what the 21st Century symphony orchestra was about. Brecker plays so passionately; I've heard a couple of other things he's done with orchestra, and this is by far the best of the bunch.

Listen to this with someone you love... as long as they're hip enough.

    5 out of 5 stars (Santa)Claus.......2001-02-21

There's no denying that Claus is the man, but the gifts he brings are not only beautiful but totally unexpected. You have to dig deep into his bag to see what's in there and it's always pleasant.

On one side are unique treatments of some jazz renderings, with subtle/slick orchestral arrangements and rhythms. On the other, "In The Presence and Absence Of Each Other", you hear Michael Brecker wailing on sax and strings reaching to the sky with a forlorn sound that can not do anything but take you away. Whether it's beautiful strings are driving complex rhythms, Claus is the man!

    5 out of 5 stars Music.......2000-01-07

ONE OF THE MOST EXQUISITE, AESTHETIC PIECES, EVER WRITTEN AND PREFORMED. BRECKERS` PLAYING IS SO EMOTIONAL. OGERMANS CHORDS ARE SO DARK DEEP AND INVITING.

            Album Description

Sounding like a raw hybrid of Radiohead (the early OK Computer days) and an untreated Jeff Buckley, The Forgotten Army are flat-out brilliant. With an exceptionally talented lead singer, intricate song arrangements, introspective lyrics and a kick-arse diverse band that includes a cellist and occasional saxophone player, The Forgotten Army seemingly possess the ammunition to go all the way. Independent. 2004.
