Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, LA on August 4th, 1901 and died in New York, NY on July 6th, 1971. Along the way, he created a rich legacy in Jazz that lives to this day. ‘Satchmo', as he was known, was both a trumpet virtuoso and a gifted bass vocalist. Armstrong songs like "A Kiss To Build A Dream On" (as heard in Sleepless in Seattle) and his many other classics have ensured him a key place in Jazz history.

Born Eleanora Fagan Gough on April 7th, 1915 in Philadelphia, PA, Billie Holiday is perhaps the most revered vocalist in all of jazz music. Songs like "God Bless The Child" and "Strange Fruit", are moving classics. Even though a hard life of drugs, alcohol and depression led to Holiday's early demise in 1959, her music lives on, and sounds just as vibrant and warm today as it did then.

Famed trumpeter Dizzy Gillepsie, born in 1917 in South Carolina, was stylistically and technically unparalleled for more than thirty years (when some argue John Faddis became heir to the Gillespie throne). Playing in the bands of Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, Charlie Barnet, Fess Williams, Duke Ellington, Cab Callaway and many others before great success as a bandleader, Dizzie Gillespie is truly a giant of jazz.

Lester Young, nicknamed "Pres" by Billie Holiday, is one of jazz's great tenor saxophonists. He is perhaps best known for his work in the Count Basie Orchestra as well as his recordings with Billie Holiday and Teddy Wilson. Along with John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins, Young is considered one of the greatest saxophonists of all time. Young's experiences with war and particularly racism during his stint as a soldier during WWII left his mental outlook permanently scarred. Though he continued to play and record, some say that he never fully recovered. Young drank himself to death in 1959.

Charlie Parker, aka `Bird', is recognized as one of the originators of bebop, along with Dizzy Gillespie and Bud Powell. Parker's collaborations with Gillespie in 1945 set the jazz world on fire with their musical complexity and evolution of the jazz idiom. Parker also led a quintet in 1947 that included Miles Davis, Max Roach, Duke Jordan and Tommy Potter. Unfortunately Parker died at 34 due to a life of excesses, but his early passing has only served to enhance his stature in the jazz community, creating a legend that lives to this day.

Jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, born in Belgium in 1910, remains one of Europe's most important contributions to Jazz. Raised in a gypsy community outside of Paris, Reinhardt lost the use of his forth and fifth fingers on his left hand in a caravan fire, which some say resulted in his truly unique playing style. His recordings on Ultraphone, Decca and HMV are among the finest jazz guitar playing ever to be recorded.

No one can match the sheer joy that Ella Fitzgerald delivered in her vocals. Whereas Billie Holiday often emoted extreme pain in her songs, Fitzgerald was just the opposite. Her beautiful voice was matched with technical excellence and a brilliant scat technique, making her a truly original and magical vocalist.

Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, LA on August 4th, 1901 and died in New York, NY on July 6th, 1971. Along the way, he created a rich legacy in Jazz that lives to this day. `Satchmo', as he was known, was both a trumpet virtuoso and a gifted bass vocalist. Armstrong songs like "A Kiss To Build A Dream On" (as heard in Sleepless in Seattle) and his many other classics have ensured him a key place in Jazz history.

Sidney Bichet is one of the Jazz world's unappreciated heroes. Although he was one of the first important New Orleans jazz soloists and a fantastic soprano saxophonist and clarinetist, Bechet was never truly appreciated in the United States. Although his career began in 1917, his career did not truly flourish until 1949, when he became an overnight sensation in France based on his phenomenal performance at the Salle Pleyel Jazz Festival in Paris.

From the late '40s to the mid-'60s, Nat King Cole was a massively successful pop singer who ranked with such contemporaries as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and Dean Martin. He shared with those peers a career that encompassed hits such as "Unforgettable", international touring, radio and television shows, and appearances in films. Before his emergence as a pop singer, Cole also spent a decade as a celebrated jazz pianist, leading his own small group.
