Album Description
Travel along the back roads of vintage country music with a stop off in the Louisiana bayous.
Backroads & Bayous combines Karen's two musical passions, early country music and traditional Cajun music. The two styles are close first cousins with a similar spirit. Karen performs regularly with two groups The Blue Moon Cowgirls and Squeeze Bayou. Both groups are featured on this recording along with friends Dede Wyland and Ric Sweeny.
Customer Reviews:
Great Listening Fun.......2005-04-12
I stumbled across this album while browsing Amazon's free downloads. It's a great collection of cajun and old-time country style that I had to buy as soon as I heard the sample. The cajun tracks are a lot of fun and they have done a lot with some classic 'oldies'. It's great listening, but there is a lot more of Ira's guitar heard than Karen's fiddle. I hope that the next album includes a bit more of the fiddle. I agree with another reviewer - it's probably my favorite CD purchased this year.
My Favorite Cd this year........2005-02-23
"Backroads & Bayous" by Karen Collins is my favorite CD this year. The selections are well chosen, with each tune bearing its own signature. The material is in keeping with the theme, as Cajun songs are comfortably tucked within the country songs. Each tune is distinct, with vocals ranging from powerful to haunting to sentimental to passionate. But there is a constant element: every note, every harmony, reveals definite purpose and fits just right. The music is mindful but uncontrived. Like
Karen's voice, the CD production is polished yet maintains its valuable
uniqueness and authenticity.
"BACKROADS & BAYOUS" - GOOD STUFF.......2004-05-28
From the driving beat of the first song, "If You're Waiting On Me", to the Loretta Lynn standard, "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin'", with a side trip to the wonderful world of Louisiana style traditional Cajun music, this album is exactly as titled - "BACKROADS & BAYOUS". The Backroads country tracts aren't the glitzy commercialized so called country music that Nashville turns out, but a return to old time good singin', good harmony and just good pickin' thanks to Ira Gitlin's talented contributions. Karen displays her musical gifts singing lead and backup vocals and playing fiddle and rhythm guitar. Blue Moon Cowgirls (Ann Porcella & Dana Ward) add harmony as only they can and make traditional country songs like "Trademark" and "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin'" a truly new listening experience. And who else could turn out a country version of "Blue Moon" but Karen and Blue Moon Cowgirls. Dede Wyland and Ric Sweeny provide almost soulful vocals that blend to produce a very good old time country sound. The Bayous Cajun tracts are typical of Squeeze Bayou and their love for traditional Cajun music. As Karen says, the CD is a unique blend of her two musical passions, early country music and traditional Cajun music, and it shows. They blend together very nicely. I hope this first isn't the last.

In Scandinavia, where seemingly endless winters howl beneath the icy flames of the Aurora Borealis, music-making has traditionally whiled away many an evening, keeping cabin-fever at bay. For their Grammy-nominated second album, the Scandinavian-trained, Washington DC-area-based trio of Andrea Hoag (fiddle, vocals), Loretta Kelley (fiddle, Hardanger fiddle, vocals), and Charlie Pilzer (acoustic bass, accordions), have captured all the toe-tingling joy and Nordic mystery of these ancient styles. The set list moves from dance tunes, merry or solemn, lopsided or more four-square, to darkly modal airs that have much in common with counterparts found throughout the Celtic world. Original tunes abut pieces dating from time-out-of-mind, containing imagery as rich as the cultures that inspired them. A young bride rides to her wedding perched upon a horse with a jingling harness, Christmas passes in a fervent blaze of celebration, a birthday celebrant praises the God who made him and a cook his abundant soup kettle. The droning sympathetic strings of the hardingfele (Hardanger fiddle) seem to imitate the voice of a snow-laden gale soughing around gracefully carved, icicle-hung eaves, through groves of evergreens, and amid ghostly, bare-branched stands of birches. But inside, where the musicians and dancers have gathered, the candles are lit, a groaning table is spread and all is warm and welcoming. --Christina Roden
Album Description
Nominated for 49th Annual GRAMMY Awards in the Best Traditional World Music Album Category
A Nordic winter celebration.
On the other side of the year, the Land of the Midnight Sun is a land of long, dark winter. But winter in Scandinavia is also a time of light: the moon's reflection on snow, the levande ljus (living light) of candles and torches, and the inward light that comes with honoring beloved traditions.
Here are some of the tunes that have become our favorites over the years of performing together. Most of these tunes come from the ancient bygdedans (village dance) tradition. Each locality had its own form of polska or springar, with its unique rhythmic variation of 3/4-time. There are also walking tunes and bridal marches here, and the relatively new (19th-century) dance forms of waltz, hambo, and polka.
Andrea Hoag - fiddle, vocals Loretta Kelley - fiddle, hardingfele, vocals Charlie Pilzer - bass, one and two row accordions

Clear, Musical.......2007-02-09
This is an incredibly clear, well engineered recording. Quiet... well defined timbres. Spacious; you're right there in the room with them.
The musicians are in time, in tune, and impart their obvious love of this music. This is esoteric stuff, of several related genres, and each is done as well as can be heard. The original tunes fit right in with the traditional, and it would not be a surprise to hear before long that they were being played back in the "old country". (Maybe they already are...)
Sparkles like fresh snow.......2006-12-16
"Hambo in the Snow" is a vibrant collection of Scandinavian traditional tunes--mostly sounds Swedish but with Norwegian and Scandinavian-American tunes throughout--brilliantly played by this fine trio of US East Coast musicians. Everything from the cover art, recording quality, tune descriptions, to the playing itself is top-notch.
I enjoyed the original tunes by Andrea Hoag done in traditional Swedish style, the solo Hardanger fiddle tunes, and the contrasts between the tracks. Generally the mood of the whole CD is optimistic and upbeat, very much an American trait. The arrangements SPARKLE.
The group found sources not just in Norway and Sweden but in the Scandinavian-American communities that are concentrated in the Upper Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. They play good tunes from wherever they find them. Even a Quebecois tune is merged with a tune from Sweden with lovely results.
A perfect Jultid (Christmastime) stocking stuffer!

Terrific second album!.......2002-02-01
Mary Sue Twohy's The Risk Involved is a very fine follow up to her Training Butterflies debut. The new one is produced by my all time favorite folk/pop duo, Pete and Maura Kennedy. The Kennedys sound is distinctive on this CD, providing intricacy and depth in the instrumentation and vocals, while providing Mary Sue's beautiful voice an ideal setting.
Life, love...the great subjects of song are skillfully and poetically handled in this wonderfully listenable album.
It's one you need to own!

Product Description
Songs to Hang on Stars, the new CD from Mary Sue Twohy (pronounced TOO-ee) will release January 1, 2006 from Azalea City Recordings. This third album from the acclaimed singer-songwriter is an eclectic mix of acoustic folk-pop (the graceful title track “Songs to Hang on Stars”) and traditional (the haunting civil war song, “Missionary Ridge.”) Luminaries Jon Carroll (Mary Chapin Carpenter), Dede Wyland, Pete and Maura Kennedy, and Scott and Jen Smith (Naked Blue) bring instrumental virtuosity and angelic harmonies to Mary Sue’s new compositions. Tracks include love songs (“Whole New View”), fresh new settings of Emily Dickinson poems (“’Twas the Old Road,” and “Because I Could Not Stop For Death”), a capella (“The Ghost of Matt McCann”), and heartfelt meditations on loss and hope (“Baltimore”). Weaving through the album is the promise of new hope shining through even the darkest times.

Customer Reviews:
Better than... ever.......2004-11-02
His first album was a good start with tracks like "A place to call home" & "Don't go changing on me". This one however is even better. Dance with me, Better than real & The match are truly great songs that I still enjoy years after buying the CD. This album is much more mature and shows Joey's talent as an artist and song writer. Highly recommended!!!
Incredible solo effort.......2002-01-14
Joey's work away from Europe has showed maturity and growth in his art. I loved the heavier, guitar music in the 80's but his new style with more acoustic and no screaming guitar riff's is refreshing and completely enjoyable to listen to. "Lucky" is perhaps one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, the best on a CD of what should be hits. It's nice that he has grown with his fans and is not trying to do the same old worn out music. No music collection is complete without this CD and his first "A Place to Call Home".
My real review.......2000-06-15
Maybe this CD will not be remembered in 20 years, but it is still solid and I think Tempest will surprise us further with very good music. I choosed to buy and after that to review this album, because the previous review appearing under my signature is not mine. While I was in Germany in holliday, some wise guy at my office fooled around with my name and sent to you a false review. So please be so kind and delete it immediately.
Only for Europe sentimental fans.......2000-05-31
Even if it is not a bad music, you must be 1000 % a Tempest (not Europe) fan to consider it a great album. It is like loving Ringo Starr's music, just because he was a Beatle. But, one, Europe is not Beatles (they will, fortunately or not, always be remembered just for "The Final Countdown"), two, there is nothing original in this album (3/4 of the today american bands plays this music), three, Ringo is a very original figure and even if he has never reached the success of his partners, he is still ... a Star, and finally, four, Ringo has never betrayed his fans, playing something completely different, 100 % american, far from the melt-in-the-mouth european hard-rock (the Scorpions would never do this to their fans). The three stars are alone for the last song. Please Joey, forgett about a solo career, just go back and join your old band. I think every Europe fan would thank yoy ten times more for that! An Europe come-back would really be something ...
Come and visit Azelea Place.......2000-04-14
Joey Tempest has been around for 20 years. He became famous with the band Europe, and he didn't stop making fabulous music after the band split. His first album (A Place To Call Home) was a very good solo try, but his second one, Azalea Place (named after the square where the recording studio is situated) is perfection. My personal favourite is The Match, which was released as a single in Sweden only, and became the most frequently played song by Swedish radios in 1997. The European single, The One In The Glass is full of truth and very good rhytm. The beautiful ballads, Losing You Again and Lucky are full of passion and lots of interesting, unusual instruments. Even if you weren't a fan of Europe, given Joey's new style, if you like good music, you'll love this album. And rumour has it that the third album is out this summer! Enjoy!

Lily Yuan, solo yangqin. The yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer), is unquestionably one of the most beautiful and serene sounding instruments in the world, and it is played here by Lily Yuan, the foremost young performer of this instrument in China today. A brand new, all digital recording of a truly virtuoso performance. Produced by Gerald Gold
Customer Reviews:
Music for deep reflection.......2000-07-05
The beautiful compositions performed by Lily Yuan on the yangqin, the Chinese dulcimer, are mystical and mesmerizing. The resonant music causes you to slow down from our rapid pace of modern living and just pause. . . to listen, reflect and absorb the notes, almost individually. A unique collection for inward-reflection.
As a rare art, it would be an unbelievable experience to see the virtuoso, Lily Yuan, perform in a recital!

Product Description
Long-time keyboardist and vocalist with Mary Chapin Carpenter's band, and one of the original members of Starland Vocal Band, Grammy-award winning songwriter-performer Jon Carroll has produced a collection of new tracks that are moving and meaningful and meant to make you move. Jon is a hit-writer with songs covered by the likes of Linda Ronstadt and Tom Jones, and you'll certainly hear why here. From the opening rocker, "Love Time" to the plaintive and poignant "Land That Time Forgot", Carroll takes you on a journey with stop-overs in old-school uptown clubs, rural and chatty front porches and the brass-driven back rooms of New Orleans. With a broad musical vocabulary, this multi-instrumentalist holds forth with a debut work that has a hot soul and lots to say.
