Though she would periodically leave the music business for extended periods, Mary Lou Williams had one of the most extraordinary careers in jazz, interacting with everyone from Jelly Roll Morton to Cecil Taylor in a career that spanned over half a century. Always open to new influences, she also influenced others along the way, including essential figures like Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell.

These 1974 sessions present Williams in various configurations, from solo to quartet, and she takes a range of approaches that embraces everything from funk to free jazz. The initial formation is a standard trio, with bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Mickey Roker, but there's nothing ordinary about the way Williams asserts her identity, blending strong two-handed playing with spacious modality and some striking, original flourishes. A second pianist, Zita Carno, joins Williams on the brief "Intermission" and the longer "Zoning Fungus II," an intensely abstract performance that looks ahead to Williams's controversial collaboration with Cecil Taylor, Embraced. Two duos with Cranshaw, the ballad "Holy Ghost" and the blues "Medi I," are taken at very slow tempos and they develop luminous depths, with Williams sculpting her notes and showing the rare lyricism of her work. The final tracks present Williams in a very different trio, with bassist Milton Suggs and conga drummer Tony Waters. Suggs's floating, multinote style is in marked contrast to Cranshaw's rock-solid concentration on fundamentals, and it brings out a more impetuous Williams in the free interplay of "Praise the Lord." The tune "Gloria" is heard in versions by each trio, the contrasts emphasizing how inventive an improviser Williams was. --Stuart Broomer

Product Description
Thirteen tracks (including previously unreleased version of Syl-o-gism and Gloria) embodying her always-distinctive compositions, lyricism, power, and adventurous harmonies. In the extensive notes to this reissue, Bob Blumenthal states that "its appearance in 1974 served as a revelation and a reaffirmation of what had always made Williams so unique. She was still stretching the boundaries, with harmonic, rhythmic, and formal notions that bordered on the avant-garde; yet her ear for melody and her deep immersion in the blues idiom remained." Williams is backed by pianist Zita Carno, bassist Bob Crenshaw, and drummer Mickey Roker. "Her music remains so fresh and free." - Musician

4 out of 5 stars A new jazz sound, what a surprise.......2000-12-19

There is always something new to detect in jazz music. I bought this record to prepare myself for Dave Douglas's Soul on Soul. Mary Lou Williams was a discovery for me, thanks to Dave Douglas. Her rhythms are surprisingly effective, if you know what I mean (most probably not, unless you have heard this record and possible others of her as well). If you believe that you know everything about jazz music, try this one. The monotonies of Zoning are very zen-like (another seemingly stupid sentence until you listen to the record).

4 out of 5 stars a fine album.......2000-09-04

mary lou williams managed something few artists in any genre are able to do: work for 50+ years and always sound fresh as the day you started. this album was the first after she took a sabbatical in the 60s to focus on sacred music, and rather than adopt a sound reminiscent of her past as a swing musician and big band arranger, she offered an album very much in tune with the stylistic changes of jazz in the 60s. the feeling here is definitely blues, but with modal and free tones mixed in. the format is a trio featuring micky roker on drums and bob cranshaw on electric bass who are energizing in their support. ms. williams keeps it funky from the outset. 'syl-o-gism' was not on the original release of the album, but sets the tone with a big beat. things vamp along until we get to 'zoning fungus', a reworking of another composition, 'fungus amungus' (think she had listened to mingus?). here she adds another piano to the mix and the sound is definitely free, but the structured free jazz of cecil taylor rather than the explosions of trane or albert ayler. the remainder settles back into the groove, closing with the wonderful romp 'play it momma.' that pretty much sums up the listener's feelings as the cd ends! enjoy...

5 out of 5 stars Mary Lou Scores.......2000-05-31

Linda Dahl, Mary Lou Williams' biographer, wrote that the pianist made her best music "when she was old". This 1974 recording proves the point. Everything we associate with Williams, the power, the feeling, the hovering sense of darkness at the edges, are all here. Whatever her emotional life may have been, to me, the sound of Mary Lou Williams is the sound of the genie leaving the bottle. My own personal favorite track is "Medi 1", but there is not a low point on this CD. This is great, great music played by one of the giants of jazz at her absolute peak.

1 out of 5 stars The worst album conceived by Froese.......2002-01-19

It's not clear when this album was recorded, and unlike in the case of "Green Desert" by the same band, I am not at all interested to know whether it's 1988, 1994 or 1996, when it was finally released on CD. This is absolutely the worst music ever to appear under the label of Tangerine Dream. Like condensed juice, it contains every single musical abortion that is prominent in the Froese output of the 90s. The band released 60 or 70 albums (even a dedicated fan like me can lose track), and believe me, you can do no worse than buy this particular CD. With so many releases, it's easy to make a mistake, and buy randomly. Please, I beg you - do not buy this album. "Zoning" is an absolute abyss of electronic music. I won't elaborate on how the particular tracks fail to deliver anything decent, for they don't, they are uniformly trashy. I have reviewed almost all Tangerine Dream albums, so I would advise you to read other reviews of mine that pertain to Tangerine Dream's musical output. Do everything you wish, but do not buy "Zoning". Please. This album is worth having only for display purposes if you want to show off with your complete collection of their recordings. End of story.

4 out of 5 stars An easily-overlooked little gem.......2000-07-05

Although billed as a Tangerine Dream album, the credits for this 1996 video thriller soundtrack release suggest that it would be more appropriately labelled as an Edgar Froese solo album. Although Jerome Froese's name appears in the composition credits for the disc's opening and closing tracks, all of the remaining 11 tracks, together with all of the performance credits appear in Edgar's name alone (although the sax playing on `Headhunter' sounds decidedly like that of Linda Spa, to my ears!).

I haven't yet been able to locate a copy of the (German) source film on video or DVD (shame!), so cannot comment on how well this music works in its intended setting. Nor can I say how much of the 70-odd minutes of music on this disc is used within "Zoning" or, indeed, whether it has been altered at all. The sleeve notes indicate that this is a 1994 (sic) studio remix, so there is probably more music here than actually used and possibly in slightly different form. Such considerations apart, though, I am able to report that while this music doesn't really plumb the depths of the great Tangerine Dream soundtracks like "Sorcerer", "Thief" and "Miracle Mile", it is a considerably more solid affair than many of their mid-to-late-80's efforts, such as "Dead Solid Perfect", "3 O'Clock High" or "The Park Is Mine". In fact, I would even go as far as to say that this album as a whole has more variety and is better able to hold the interest from start to finish than some of the `mainstream' Tangerine Dream releases of the same period.

Stylistically, the music is close to the better bits of "Goblin's Club" (though it lacks the tedium of much of that album) or the gentler moments of "Oasis", with the occasional reminder of Haslinger's lightness of touch thrown in. Indeed, lovers of the new heavier pulse that has infected Tangerine Dream's music since "Rockoon" may be disappointed by the lightness of much of the sound-world of "Zoning" but longer terms fans who prefer the band's earlier music should find much to enjoy here. All in all, this is fine release. And probably Edgar Froese's best solo album!

(One closing word of warning: if you intend to watch the video some day and hate spoilers, don't read the CD booklet notes. They reveal the entire plot of the film!)

          Album Description

Genre: New-age/ambient/meditative/relaxing/instrumental. Written, performed, produced and engineered by Dane Rochelle, August 1997 thru October 1998.

Instrumentation: Analog synthesizer, digital and acoustic pianos, electric and acoustic guitars. Recordings mixed to Sony digital 2-track from Tascam analog 4-track reel-to-reel studio masters. Final mastering performed at Room 29 Recording Studios, Westerly, Rhode Island, November 1998 with Dave Nigrelli.

Almost prayerful in it's deliberate unobtrusiveness, Dane Rochelle's debut CD release, The Dream Garden, is a beautifully gentle and introspective musical meditation. An avid admirer of the works-both musical and philosophical-of Brian Eno, Erik Satie, John Cage, and Steve Reich, Dane has created something intriguingly original and enjoyable here; inviting, yet graciously undemanding, and that's a beautiful thing...

5 out of 5 stars Best Kept Secret.......2002-09-12

I've had this cd from the first month it came out - music still holds up to this day. Originally I purchased it due to the artist's uncanny resemblance to Morrissey.

5 out of 5 stars One more reason to live in Connecticut!.......1999-11-13

I drifted away so many times during my massage that I lost track of time completely, extremely relaxing. My favorite, so far, is 'the Eotvos passionale'. More, I want more!

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Music.......1999-09-14

Enjoyable, thought provoking, transformational unique listening. It is just the type of music that I have been looking for.

          5 out of 5 stars A little gem!.......1999-07-27

I picked up a copy of this album while visiting Boston several weeks ago, at a little shop on Newbury Street. It was mixed in with some Eno stuff, so I took a chance. What a strange little gem! It's a very quite, understated album. I brought it back to the hotel with me, put some headphones on, and soon nodded peacefully off to sleep. It didn't DEMAND my attention. It just accompanied me. I truly love that quality about it. It certainly is reminiscent of Eno and Satie and even Riech. I highly recommend this one. You owe it to yourself...
