Grady Tate is renowned as a session drummer extraordinaire, having worked with just about everybody in the late '50s/early '60s, yet he has also displayed a warm, flexible, rhythmically agile baritone voice, which is less well-known than his drumming. Gary McFarland thought enough of Tate's singing voice to record a number of vocal albums for his short-lived Skye label in the mid 60s. One of the impressive vocal albums he did was Windmills of My Mind, a jazz/R&B release in 1968. This album underscores the fact that Tate was never a radical or abstract type of singer; the smooth, elegant crooner heard on 'And I Love Her', 'The Windmills Of Your Mind' and 'A Little At A Time' has a lot more in common with Johnny Hartman, Arthur Prysock and even Johnny Mathis than hardcore beboppers like Jon Hendricks, Babs Gonzales and Eddie Jefferson. Although Tate's backing includes pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Bob Cranshaw, much of Windmills isn't jazz -- 'Don't Fence Me In' and 'Would You Believe', in fact, are pure 1960s soul music. Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music.Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

    This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

    Another perfect reissiue by collectibles music,This album contains themes from movies.Most of these songs have been unavailable by Faith since Lps went out.This album contains such songs as somewhere my love, this hotel,And we were lovers,This is my song,Alfie,How are things in Glacca Morra and many more.All of these songs are beautifully done Faith style.The album empasizes just his orchestra.Their's no chrous here.The original liner notes to born free are included in the bookelet as well as pictures of Faith probebly from born free under the clear cd holder.The liner notes to Windmills of your mind are not included.If your a collector of Percy Faith's music you have to get this cd since many of these songs are on cd for the first time.

    There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

    I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

      Grady Tate is renowned as a session drummer extraordinaire, having worked with just about everybody in the late '50s/early '60s, yet he has also displayed a warm, flexible, rhythmically agile baritone voice, which is less well-known than his drumming. Gary McFarland thought enough of Tate's singing voice to record a number of vocal albums for his short-lived Skye label in the mid 60s. One of the impressive vocal albums he did was Windmills of My Mind, a jazz/R&B release in 1968. This album underscores the fact that Tate was never a radical or abstract type of singer; the smooth, elegant crooner heard on 'And I Love Her', 'The Windmills Of Your Mind' and 'A Little At A Time' has a lot more in common with Johnny Hartman, Arthur Prysock and even Johnny Mathis than hardcore beboppers like Jon Hendricks, Babs Gonzales and Eddie Jefferson. Although Tate's backing includes pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Bob Cranshaw, much of Windmills isn't jazz -- 'Don't Fence Me In' and 'Would You Believe', in fact, are pure 1960s soul music.         Grady Tate is probably better known as a self-taught session jazz drummer appearing in the album credits and liner notes of many recordings during the 60's. During that time it was not uncommon for record companies to dabble with placing an artist in front of a microphone to interpret popular songs of the day. Witness gawd-awful records by William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, the guy from Mission Impossible, the little kid from the Rifleman, Leorne Greene, etc.

        You cannot lump the talents of Grady Tate into such a mix. His hip rendition of "And I Love Her" is only a glimpse of range and depth to be found on the rest of the record.

        I have all of Grady Tate's records on Skye & Buddah. Windmills of my Mind, is as good a place as any to begin. And, if you can find the follow up album, "Feeling Life" - pick it up too!

        After listening to Sting sing, Windmills Of My Mind, I remembered when I first heard this way back in the day of 1969 or 1970..like i said back in the day...I own the original LP, but who has a turntable these days? I was so delighted to find it at Amazon...This cd is smooth JAZZ at its finest, especially Sack Full Of Dreams...a smooth, mellow tune that sets your mind to daydreaming. This lost treasure is a cool addition for a jazz library.

        The song "And I love her" is fantastic. the drumming and the clarinets really get your blood rushing. the humming is a real soul touching experience that makes you hum right along.I can't get enough of the drum and clarinets. The rest of the tunes are also good, but the afford said mentioned selection is worth the price of the whole album.

        I remembered this music from many years ago. I thought it out-of-print, and was shocked to find it via amazon.com. The music? Well, Mr. Tate didn't have a great voice. But two of the songs have haunted my memory for years: "Would You Believe" and "Sack Full of Dreams". Obviously, there is a lot to be said for style!
