Most of the civilized world identifies this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic with the Robert Wise film, one of the most successful movie musicals of all time ("The Sound of Money," critic Pauline Kael termed it). Which is why this recording can be so disconcerting. Not only are there different tunes ("How Can Love Survive," "Laendler," "No Way to Stop It," but no "Confidence" or "Something Good," both written for the film), but Captain Von Trapp is played by heavyset folksinger Theodore Bikel, a far cry from young Christopher Plummer. Mary Martin was not only much older than the film's Julie Andrews, she wasn't even British! Then again, neither was the real Maria--and the stage version is, in many ways, more faithful to the Von Trapp Family Singers' true story. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars Musical........2007-03-03

This is the original version of The Sound of Music starring Mary Martin.. She does a wonderful job, I especially like the Lonely Goatherd.
A real difference from the Julie Andrews version. With extra songs left out of the film and one changed song. I thrououghly recommend this title.

4 out of 5 stars rosielyn.......2007-01-13

This is the Sound of Music of my childhood. I never saw the show, but the music was all over when I was growing up. I have seen the movie many times, and went on the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg recently. So I got the original soundtrack. The movie is wonderful, but the music from the stage musical is much better. For one thing, they got the singers for their musical ability. No offense to Julie Andrews, a great actor and singer, but the music was written for Mary Martin, and it does show. The stage show did not have the benfit of the scenery of the movie, so the music in the stage show makes up for that. It's more about music, and less an accompaniment to the beautiful scenery around Salzburg. So watch the movie, and listen to this soundtrack

4 out of 5 stars Mary Martin in THE SOUND OF MUSIC.......2007-01-11

Although the recording techniques were not as advanced as today, this recording is a wonderful reproduction of the original version of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. The digital sizzle of today's recordings is missing---but it sure beats vinyl. It's hard to believe that the first time audiences heard this music was not Julie Andrews in the 1956 movie version. Mary Martin was considered one of the musical theatre's first ladies and for students and fans of the art form, hearing her unique approach to the music should be very enlightening. Since Oscar Hammerstein died in 1960, one can assume that he had a good deal of input into the production of this recording. In effect we are listening to the musical, as the creators wanted us to hear it.

3 out of 5 stars Movie Sountrack More Enjoyable.......2006-10-24

I have always considered myself a true music theatre buff, but never had the chance to listen to this soundtrack in it's entirety until recently.I love Rodgers and Hammerstein without a doubt and the movie musical is classic. I must say I like it considerably better than this original soundrack though, which for me is a rarity. The tempos drag and take away from some of the playfullness of its more popular numbers like Do-Re-Mi. The children do a wonderful job of keeping the energy up through all of their numbers though which distracts from that fact. My biggest complaint with the show though has to be Mary Martin. Her voice is a little too mature and the constant sliding into each and every note she sings is enough to give someone motion sickness. I envision the reverend mother as the children's governess every time she opens her mouth. There is no character or life to her delivery which makes each of her songs almost a chore to listen to. If I didn't have to refer to this soundtrack repeatedly when I choreographed the show, I would have probably discarded it and stuck to the movie soundtrack. That is the problem sometimes with making these shows into movies sometimes though. The deviation from the original can cause little nuances and details to change making it hard to have an honest opinion on one or the other. In my opinion, and that's all that it is, the movie soundrack captures the music much more vibrantly and for entertainment and listening pleasure is the more enjoyable of the two.

5 out of 5 stars MARY MARTIN FOREVER.......2006-01-08

O dear!... we're way within the second millenium and..... what more would anyone of us fans of the `musicals' have to add of this OBC album.... after regarding the famous publicity shot of the trio: R. Rodgers, Oscar II and postulant-nun-clad Mary Martin hopping happily ever-after, as light as bird from brier, on the way to their Banks, after the hounds of Münich plagued... I mean `The Sound Of Music' played on Broadway for 1443 performances?

Following the Lunt-Fontanne and the Mark Hellinger Theater runs, we all know so well what happened: IN came the 1965 mamoth-blockbuster film starring First Soprano Assoluta Ms Julie Andrews, directed and supported by Robby Wise and Chris Plummer... aaah, and featuring the ageing, all the more gorgeous-- wishing she had a mouth organ to play-- Eleanor Parker.

"Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Every morning you greet me
Small and white, clean and bright
You look happy to meet me"

(How can we EVER forget Chris Plummer's lovely, lovely inferior lip as he strummed his quaint guitar and lipsinked to this cutie, Alpine song...aaaw!)

Little to add; as we all remember, Andrews finally got her big break into movies via Poppins, Disney, co-star Dick Van Dike et al; she could then stick a stiff tongue out to Audrey Hepburn and she became (almost) every `musical' fan's daaaaarling.....Mary Pickford had preceded Dame Andrews in our granny's hearts, although Pickford --or granny-- could have never prevised Andrew's prodigious DICTION!. Anyway... what about `darling' Mary Martin... (Dallas' JR's mother, didn't you know by now??? )

What might be so laudatory about the 1959 Original Broadway Cast Album of your favourite musical movie? Robert Russel Bennet's orchestrations? Recording producer Goddard Lieberson???? (Who were THEY???) Yeah, I know:.... Mary Martin was too old to play the part of Maria.... Sure! So was Bernhard when she played L'Aiglon (and so was Tennesee's-Vivien Mrs. Stone `too old to play Rosalind' --said Coral Brown). But what about Mary Martin's voice, the awesome brivato, the delivery, the heartfelt every-Do-Re-Mi-notes she sang..... Who can beat her Sixteen-Goin-On-Seventeen-reprise number, or her `An Ordinary Couple torch song? Wwwweeeell.... mmmmm..... just listen to track 2; the title song... That's it, in a nutshell.

4 out of 5 stars Sarafina.......2006-06-26

A great movie which gives an overview of what occured during the apartheid regime in South Africa. It tells the story of a young black girl living in Soweto, who has dreams to make it as a star before she realises the true reality of the situation around her. Not a morbid movie at all but has its serious moments. The funny side of people living in their situation is portrayed very well.

5 out of 5 stars The Struggle for Justice.......2006-05-08

"Sarafina" is a powerful and moving film about the struggle of South African school kids for survival and freedom against apartheid. It is a story of determination, perseverance and courage against tremendous odds. It teaches us that good will always triumph against evil: that the oppressed will always fight back and die to regain their freedom and dignity. The viewer will have a picture of what life was like under apartheid, ranging from school life, living conditions for blacks, the prisons and the brutal police.

I particularly love the beautiful South African music with its rich and outstanding vocals, percussion, horns and the like. You will love the sounds of veterans musicians like Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba.

This is highly recommended for those who want to learn the history of the struggle against social injustice in South Africa.

`Sarafina!' is the soundtrack to the brilliant musical movie starring Whoopi Goldberg as a radical school teacher in apartheid South Africa, and a bright sunny student named Sarafina. Whoopi allegedly agreed to appear in Sister Act II on the condition that this movie got promoted by Hollywood.

The soundtrack comprises mostly South African music, rich in percussion, organs, horns, guitars, throbbing bass, and the outstanding vocals and harmonizing South African music is famous for.

Opening track `Sarafina!' by Hugh Masakela is a bouncy, rhythmic number performed by the cast. Melodic guitars and darting horns make this a winner. In a similar vein is `Freedom is coming tomorrow'.

`The Lord's prayer' is a dramatic rendition of the famous prayer. It starts off slow and accapella with organ accompaniment, before the rich African rhythm heralds a joyous chorale performance. This was performed by the entire school cast at the start of another school day.

`Thank you mama' is a tender lilting ballad that kicks off with chants and rolling guitars. A love song between mother (Miriam Makeba) and daughter (Leleti Khumalo).

Most of the other songs are typical beautiful South African sounds, ranging from down tempo lament-like songs to joyous celebrations; `Nkonyane Kandaba' (lament-like), `Sabela', `Sechaba', `Safa Saphel' Isizwe' (lament-like), the guitar laden `Vuma Dlozi Lami' and `Lizobuya'.

`One more time' features the fiery vocals of James Ingram, with South African backing vocals which transform what would have otherwise been a bland R&B song.

A brilliant movie and soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music!.......2005-08-18

I have the movie soundtrack with Julie Andrews, a version with Mary Martin, but this is my favorite because it includes songs not heard in the movie: How Can Love Survive, No Way to Stop It, and Something Good.

5 out of 5 stars The hills are alive, with the sound of class!.......2002-07-14

I can't emagine a world without the sound of music!
The songs, the film and the stage show are AMAZING! I am currently running in a short term play in the theater Royal, Bath, and i have used this to get a taster of the music!
Popluar songs in my books are
the lonely goatherd
No way to stop it and
so long, farewell.

5 out of 5 stars Another beautifully done musical revival!.......2002-06-12

This is truly a beautiful CD. All of the songs are lovely and it's a great revival of the musical. Rebecca Luker makes a wonderful Maria. It truly deserves all of the stars it can get.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive new Sound of Music album.......2002-01-06

While I strongly stand behind my view that the Original 1959 Broadway Cast album with Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel is clearly the album of choice, this new production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC is equally as praiseworthy. Rebecca Luker adds her own charm to the part of Maria, as did Mary Martin and Julie Andrews before her. The Captain's singing is somewhat weak in a few areas when compared with Theodore Bikel and C. Plummer (Plummer was dubbed for the film), but he does very well with it. Patricia Neway from the old album is far and away superior to what we have here and Peggy Wood from the film version (Wood was also dubbed for the film).

While I adore the film and its award winning soundtrack, I regret not seeing this revival when it was still playing on Broadway, as I was in NYC in early '99. This new Broadway cast album deservedly stands right up there with all the rest!

5 out of 5 stars Cool.......2001-11-20

I had never seen the sound of music, until we did it at my school and I fell in love with it and I love all of the songs. I have only heard this CD 1 time but it still sounds just as good as it did to me the first time I heard the songs!!!!!!!!!!! My Favorite songs: No Way to Stop it, How Can Love Survive, and Sixteen Going on Seventeen.

4 out of 5 stars The Title Is Accurate........2002-02-21

I'll be honest - I mainly bought this CD for one song - the new recording of William Finn's "Unlikely Lovers" from Falsettos.

In fact, there is a sticker on the front of the Great Musicals CD which states the following - "Unlikely Lovers from Falsettos is new to CD."

This isn't really correct. This particular recording of that wonderful second act song is new, but the song itself was previously recorded and released on the original cast recording of Falsettoland many years ago. I have also read a review of another (unauthorised?) CD recording made in Michigan of Falsettoland.

Anyway, this new recording is so powerful and emotional, I'm glad I bought the CD.

Readers might be interested to know that the 2001 recording of U. Lovers was made at Joe's Pub in January - the same place where Finn's Infinite Joy was recorded.

To the best of my knowledge, U.L. wasn't performed in the live show. I believe this as in an interview, Finn stated that the only song from Falsettos they were to perform in Infinite Joy was The Baseball Game (wonderfully conveyed by Stephen DeRosa on the CD). Also, in this new recording of U.L., unlike the recordings on Infinite Joy, there isn't any audience reaction. I suspect that the cast made this recording before or after audience arrived.

Loved this new version. It's accompanied by a solo piano. Lewis Cleale has a more traditional male voice (light baritone?) than Michael Rupert's higher, head, some might say "character" sound. Both are more than pleasant on the ear.

Also, on this recording, there's an a cappella section towards the end of the song; on the lyrics "...let's pretend..." Quite affecting.

As for the rest of the album, well all the tracks are gems in one way or another. Particular favourites of mine include -

"Lady's Maid" from Titanic. With it's "up down up" three note/syllable melody structure (millionaire, constable, engineer) it is immediately catchy, and is a great example of an "I'm about to start a journey, so wish me luck as I go" type of show song.

"All The Wasted Time" from Parade. Loved the almost folk influenced sound and the soaring voices; including Carolee Carmello who is heard on Infinite Joy.

"New Music" from Ragtime. It 'builds' beautifully and is a great example of the work of a contemporary song writing team - the highly talented Flaherty and Ahrens.

I suppose the thing is, that many musical theatre buffs will already have many of these songs on CD. However, you many not have THESE recordings - e.g. - the "If You Could See Her" from Cabaret is from the 1998 version, the "Do-Re-Mi" from (what else?) The S.O.M. is the 1998 recording.

If one was being picky, the following points might be made -

For a CD celebrating RCA's 100th anniversary, this collection is somewhat 'top heavy' - 9 of the 14 tracks - almost 65% were recorded in 1992 or later.

Also -

With a number of the American based performers, even when they are portraying non-Americans, their native accent is still recognisable. This is particularly noticeable on track 14 - "Do-Re-Mi" ("...Here, I'll make it easier for you...") and, to a lesser extent; track 2 - "Prologue - Tradition" from Fiddler ("...trying to scratch out a pleasant simple tune...")

But when one is dealing with material and performances of this level, such points are minor quibbles.

All in all, a very fine CD which has made a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Recording of a Great Musical.......2005-12-08

There have been a number of attempts where musicians most at home in the classical repertoire have attempted the scores of some of the greatest Broadway and Hollywood musicals. The results for some have been less than spectacular, at least as far as critics are concerned, but the public seems more than pleased with the results. One recording that received both critical acclaim and public praise is Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra's recording of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Some critics believe this recording is Kunzel at his best. This set contains music from both the stage and film, much like the 1998 Broadway revival recording but ten years earlier.

The cast is spectacular, led by Frederica von Stade as Maria. Von Stade's voice is different from that of Mary Martin and Julie Andrews who immortalized the role on stage and screen respectively, yet she brings more to her interpretation than her gorgeous voice and we see another definitive interpretation of the role of Maria. The Von Trapp children, all students from Cincinnati's School for the Creative and Performing Arts, stand out as well and have camaraderie with von Stade. The cast is rounded out with some other opera greats: Haken Hagergard as Captain Von Trapp, Barbara Daniels as the villain we all love to hate Baroness Schraeder and the immortal Eileen Farrell is the Abbess in one of her last recordings. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra is at home with the score and Kunzel's direction demonstrates his love for the score and involvement with the project. This should come as no surprise to people familiar with Kunzel during his tenure as conductor of the Cincinnati Pops. He is at home with a variety of musical styles as his many recordings show and he seems to have a god idea of what people will enjoy.

People who love THE SOUND OF MUSIC will find the liner notes helpful, giving a history of the work and its place in American musical theatre. The music alone is the perfect "pick me up" and listeners are certain to enjoy this disc for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-02-09

Behind the movie version of the Sound of Music this one in my opinion ranks next in line. The voices are so amazing and I love the childrens voices together. Them singing the sound of music is absolutely beautiful. Maria's voice is a little bit too operatic, but I listen to hear the children and the beautiful accompaniment to the songs.

4 out of 5 stars Good performance.......1999-04-21

I like THE SOUND OF MUSIC very much, so I have five recordings of it. This recording is good. Especially, this disc includes two numbers for the movie, and three numbers for the stage. It's worthing to listening to them. Probably, this disc contains all the numbers for THE SOUND OF MUSIC at the first time. Frederica von Stade's Maria is too operatic at some numbers, but her Maria is good. But, Farrel's CLIMB EV'RY MOUNTAIN is not so good. Other singers, like Barbara Daniels, are very good. Of course, without to saying about orchestra.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

After unearthing Stephen Sondheim's youthful effort, Saturday Night, a couple of years ago, producers desperate to bank on the name of one of Broadway's last living titans continue chasing after obscure offerings. The Frogs was a 1974 adaptation of a play by Aristophanes and was staged by the Yale Repertory Theater for a week. This recording, the first complete one, boasts the presence of Nathan Lane, Davis Gaines, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. In Broadway star power, that's like having Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise in the same movie. Evening Primrose was a 1966 ABC special, which spawned a couple of songs ("I Remember" and "Take Me to the World") that made it into the cabaret and solo recital repertories. Granted, these two pieces are for Sondheim completists, but they do provide an interesting glimpse into the mind of one of the musical theater's most brilliant auteurs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Primrose Shines, Frogs Leaps!.......2005-08-27

This recording is arguably one of Sondheims greatest! The Frogs, which appears here with a brilliant cast (Nathan Lane, Brian Stokes Mitchell among others) is one of Mr. Sondheims oddest pieces of theater. Although it was recently revived on Broadway with a new book by Mr. Lane and that recording is probably better, the entire first half of this recording (which is The Frogs) is brilliant for nostalgias sake and for the amazing expierence of the music itself. Mr. Sondheim has created such music for The Frogs! Very grandiose and stunning!

But it is really the final four tracks on the album (The Evening Primrose) that shines. The Evening Primrose is also an interesting Sondheim show but this one is quite possibly worth the price of the album itself. This recording (the only LEGAL one i know of) of the show is... well... perfect. The music is Sondheim at his best, the singers (Neil Patrick Harris plays the lead) are terrific and it just sounds glorious!

The Frogs might be an interesting and entertaining reason to purchase this album but it will The Evening Primrose that will make you scream with joy!

Contrary to other reviwes posted I will tell you that the Evening Primrose on the Mandy Patinkin Cd "Dress Casual" IS the "Primrose" to own. This one was in my opinion under acted and undersung. While Mandy Patinkin is always over the tip, Ms Peters is one of the best Interpreters of Sondheim's works and the orchestration on this is much darker and deep, like the subject matter of the piece. I found this whole CD lacking, given that just like the "Dress Casual" I bought it only for the "Evening Primrose" selections. Thank the GODS for CD Burners so I can compile my own best of Sondheim CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Evening Primrose.......2004-04-15

I find the Evening Primrose here much better than that on "Dress Casual." Firstly, because the two performers--Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy--are both amazing singers. Also, because both of these performers are younger and thus, their voices are more "youthful". For this musical, in particular, "youthfulness" is important; Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin are simply to mature to effectively do these parts. I find Neil Patrick Harris, in particular, absolutely superb, and his version of "Not While I'm Around" (on the NYP Sweeney Todd recording) is far and away the best I have ever heard (except for LuPone's dismal British accent). This Evening Primrose alone is worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing........2004-02-17

>The Patinkin-Peters version of "Evening Primrose" is in Patinkin's "Dress Casual" CD, the studio recording that became the basis of his Broadway concert. I believe this was the first time all four songs were recorded.

Possibly, but on THIS disc we have the first time all four songs were recorded UNDER SONDHEIM'S SUPERVISION, and that makes all the difference in the world. Mandy Patimkin greatly distorts "If You Can Find Me"'s melody; Bernadette Peters's voice is under the accompaniment on "I Remember", and the arrangements on "Dress Casual" are over-elaborate, gooey, and unrestrained. Neither singer effectively plays his character. No, the "Evening Primrose" you want is right here.

5 out of 5 stars Addendum.......2004-01-31

If you're looking for the Mandy Patinkin "Dress Casual" CD (as an alternative or supplemental "Evening Primrose" recording), note that Amazon has it listed, for some reason, under "classical music".

I bought this CD because I want to get my hands on everything where Ron Raines is singing. He starts the CD with a beautiful rendition of OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING. Unfortunately, that is the only thing he sings. The other singers are good, too. I thought it was interesting to have Pat Suzuki sing BALI HAI. Her version is different from the original but very beautiful. All of Rodgers and Hammerstein's music is beautiful and sometimes moving and inspirational. Unless you own every R and H musical, buy this!

2 out of 5 stars Skip this version; get the Capitol Records version instead.......2002-10-08

The Sound of Music is one of the most famous scores ever written for the stage. It had a dynamite Broadway cast that featured Mary Martin, Theodore Bikel, and Patricia Neway, and ran for 1,443 performances. Its popularity on the London stage, where it opened at the Palace Theatre on May 18, 1961 (2,385 performances), far outdid the success it had seen on Broadway. That was partly accomplished by its wonderful cast, which included Jean Bayless as Maria, Roger Dann as the Captain, and Constance Shacklock as the Reverend Mother. Although the cast is pretty unfamiliar to audiences outside Britain, they are just as good (if not better in some cases) than those on Broadway. Of course Jean Bayless is not Julie Andrews or Mary Martin, but she's just as good. The London cast recording of The Sound of Music is a necessary addition to the Sound of Music canon....well, just not this particular release of it.

This Laserlight release is very truncated compared with the original LP. Only 11 cuts out of the original 17 are included on this release, with several important songs, such as Lonely Goatherd, How Can Love Survive, and the reprise of The Sound of Music, missing. This release of the recording is not worth the time or money spent on it.

My advice would be to try to track this cast recording down on its 1997 CD release from Capitol Records/Angel on Angel's "Broadway Classics" series. That version has the entire 17 tracks from the original LP. The sound quality (in stereo) is fantastic and the album overall is just as good as the Original B'way Cast album or the movie soundtrack. Unfortunately, the Capitol release is very very difficult to find. I was able to locate a used copy on Ebay recently. It is not currently in print, but keep an eye peeled. You never know where one may show up. Or, try to find an LP of the cast album if you can (there was one up for bid at Ebay at the same time as this). Just avoid this Laserlight version.

The Capitol version is highly recommended, if you're fortunate enough to find one.

5 (well, I'd give it 10 if I could) stars for the London cast recording (Capitol version)
    2 for the Laserlight release

1 out of 5 stars Find the Capitol release.......2001-12-28

I was in my local music store and came across this Laserlight version of the London Cast recording and the Capitol Records release on their Broadway Angel series - I highly recommend the latter because it is a full representation of the original LP. Don't waste your time with this one. If you want the complete London Cast Recording, you will have to look high and low - it's a very hard disc to find. Missing on this truncated CD is the Preludium, The Lonely Goatherd, How Can Love Survive?, The Sound of Music reprise towards the end of Act One, No Way to Stop It, and the reprise of Sixteen Going on Seventeen with Maria and Liesl.

2 out of 5 stars Six tracks omitted - not recommended.......1998-08-24

At 38 min. long, this is an emasculated release of the original LP. Six tracks are omitted - The Preludium; The Lonely Goatherd; No Way To Stop It; The Sound of Music (Reprise); How Can Love Survive; Sixteen Going On Seventeen (Reprise). Not recommeded - buy the cassette instead.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably the best Sound of Music recording.......2004-11-19

To me, this recording of The Sound of Music is one of the best out there. Jean Bayless is great as Maria. I will not compare her to Mary Martin or Julie Andrews--each woman stands on her own merits. The same goes here. Go beyond the ever popular movie soundtrack and look for this one next time you're in the record store. I'm sure you'll find it very enjoyable. The stereo recording is fantastic.

This 1997 release from Angel Records presents the complete recording (all 17 cuts) as heard on the original 1961 LP. Laserlight released a truncated version of the recording in 1995 with only 11 cuts; several important songs missing. AVOID the Laserlight release at all costs. Look only for the original Angel Records version. It is still in print.

4 out of 5 stars a superb cast; great orchestrations.......2004-04-29

This is the superb cast album to the original 1961 London production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, starring Jean Bayless. THE SOUND OF MUSIC ran for an amazing 2,385 performances (the Broadway production ran for 1,433 performances) and still holds a record as the longest-running London production of a foreign show.

Jean Bayless, in her West End debut, invests Maria with a sincere and effervescent quality which is perfect for the character. Roger Dann is great as Captain von Trapp. Legendary opera star of Covent Garden, Constance Shacklock, is a thrilling Mother Abbess. Eunice Gayson gives the haughty Baroness a comically-shrill edge, with Harold Kasket in the role of resourceful Max.

Barbara Brown is a lovely Lisel (though sounds too much like Lauri Peters from the OBC), and Nicholas Bennett is wonderful in the role of troubled Rolf Gruber. Among the nuns is Lynn Kennington (the following year she played Adriana in a London production of THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE).

Angel Broadway have done a lovely job in bringing this title to CD. Stay away from the horrid abriged version from Laserlight!
