In his liner notes, commenting on the broad span of music he has recorded for ECM, Stenson remarks, 'Openness & belief in the musicians have always been signatures for this record company.' This is a review of Bobo Stenson from 1971-1999. It is selections from his discs. It's a compilation, an overview of his career. It's moody. The trio tracks are magnificent. Every note is carefully placed and thought out. It's mesmerizing music. There are guests, Don Cherry, Charles LLoyd, and others. The trio work is the best. Fascinating. I think trio work lacks space. However, Stenson works best with the trio. He feels the trio. It's thinking Jazz. You are thrown into a mood, a serious melancholy. You have to analyze every note. It's really good Jazz, because you are involved in it. This is serious Jazz, as in not clowning areound, no fun. The type of Jazz that intellectuals would prefer to immerse themselves in. It is also easy to follow. The care Stenson takes with each note, and the mood that it evokes, is what Jazz is about. These guys aren't having fun, they are creating. This is the kind of acoustic Jazz that I like. Every Jazz listener should own this. Mesmerizing. Relective. It will make you reflective, and make you think. As an aside, the enclosed booklet is very complete. It acquaints the listener with the history of Stenson, track descriptions and what discs they can be found on, and Stensons analysis of each track, as he sees it. It just makes the whole package even better. Helps you to understand more fully what you are listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of A Great Musician.......2002-07-23

What a great idea for ECM to release these Rarum recordings of some of the finest musicians in the world. Bobo Stenson has been one of my favorite Pianist ever since I heard his incredible introduction solo on "Witchi-Tai-To" with Jan Garbarek back in 1973. This disc is a great introduction to his work. Covering a wide range of recordings that included Don Cherry, Jan Garbarek, Charles LLoyd and his working Trio, Stenson is magnificant throughout these 13 compositions. His musical style travels in the same vein as Paul Bley's with a hint of Keith Jarratt. His compositions are very deep and probing and Bobo has mastered the art of optimizing space to make his compositions very reflective and sincere. I find myself day-dreaming when listening to tracks like "Golden Rain" and "Little Peace." Stenson's music requires repeated listening to uncover its' true beauty. After repeated listenings to Rarum 8: I went out and purchased his excellent 1999 trio recording "Serenity." Wow! This guy makes beautiful music. He is very gifted. Please check him out.
