Don't you just love when worlds meet?.......2006-11-17
This is yet another of those beautiful albums in which jazz greats reach across the stylistic and generational divides and work beautifully with each other!
Ellington's legacy is, of course, a great starting point to glue together any two musical generations, but this album goes beyond that; showcasing eccentric and sadly underappreciated vocalist Hibbler in more then reverent company of the even more excentric multi-instrumentalist Kirk, with the added bonus of an extremely versatile and competent rhythm section consisting of Hank Jones (p), Ron Carter (b) and Oliver Jackson (dm).
Yes, this is definitely not a full-time Rahsaan Roland Kirk album (I must warn Kirk fans!), it is a gentle meeting of the times in which both parties contribute the best and the most sensitive extrovert and subtle jazz they can share with each other.
Mind you, only first 5 songs feature Hibbler, but his unique phrasing is really impresive, particularly on "Don't get around much anymore" and, my favorite number, "Lover come back to me", whereas Kirk uses his incredible tallent with taste, not showing off his ability to play more than one instrument at the same time. When he does his staff, he actually sounds like two (or even more) musicians working together very well.
Leon Thomas'vocal at the last song ("Dream") are not unpleasant but are no match to Hibbler's, nor do they work well with the original concept of the album.
However, all in all, this is great and imaginative music so some conceptual glitches shouldn't diminish the listening pleasure.

Customer Reviews:
A reissue Dr. Frankenstein would love.......2005-04-05
Hard to recommend purchasing this material in this misguided configuration as long as other options exist. The Hibbler/Kirk album is currently available as an import for only a few dollars more and includes one track dropped here due to time restrictions. The Coleman album (featuring Scott LaFaro on bass) is even more easily obtained and features a bonus track also not heard here.
A special combo.......2004-01-21
I can't comment on the Ornette half of this unusal combo deal, but I have the Rahsaan/Hibbler album and it is an eternal favorite. I agree with the other reviewer that this isn't quite the most outgoing presentation for Mr. Kirk but it is gorgeous work that makes for a uniquely special blend of these two artists. I have loved Hibbler's voice ever since hearing this album but I have yet to hear anything else by him that matches this performance. This combination of two artists (Ornette has nothing to do with the Kirk recording with Hibbler) is such a relaxed, honest presentation of some old standards. I honestly can find no previous versions of these classic melodies that would out-do these renderings, and I idolize Billie Holiday, Prez and some of the other masters, but this is really special here. I am surprised it hasn't received more respect except it is a traditional concept that wasn't exactly in the vanguard of its time. This stuff is timeless, and it is definitely a Rahsaan flavor that any RRK fan should have near his/her stereo. Even though it doesn't capture his most dramatic side, it is unmistakeably Rahsaan. And the two artists seem perfectly suited. This is the kind of recording that can make a more "free-jazz" lover open up to the more traditional side of jazz. Along the lines of what Sun Ra displayed on many of his recordings. I'm buying this just to have the CD quality on hand, the Ornette recording can only be icing on the cake!
Up Hibbler, Down Ornette.......2003-10-01
Although not as strong as in his earlier work, Hibbler is still fun to listen to in this 1972 album. Kirk accompanies him admirably.
Ornette is another story! This is atonal noise. OK, I'm sure there are some (a minority to be sure) that consider "Ornette" a great album, but in the last analysis, the music is unaccessible and pretentious. This is the kind of music that gives jazz a bad name.
Not so much Rahsaan, but great Al Hibbler.......2000-01-04
This wouldn't be an early choice for a great Rahsaan record, as he is mostly accompanying Al Hibbler here. Al Hibbler is quite good, however and if you like this style of vocals this is a great album by any standards. Rahsaan may not be out front on this album, but he's right behind. It's just not the creative playing that he is known for.

Deutshes Symphonie Orchester Performs Music from Chaplin Movies, the Kid, the Gold Rush, the Circus, City Lights and Modern Times.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful orchestration and the Genius of Charlie Chaplin.......2000-01-22
A sort of "Greatest Hits" from some of Chaplin's most famous films -- and that's saying something. For those who only know Chaplin as a brilliant actor and director, it may come as a surprise that he was also one heck of a tunesmith (his most famous being the lovely and hummable tune "Smile" from his film MODERN TIMES.) And these new recordings -- using Chaplin's original scores -- preserve the charm of Chaplin's genius while still giving us clean, crisp sound.
This is more than just the incidental music that sometimes lurks around on scores. The "Garrent Waltz" and "Blue Eyes" from THE KID are fully-realized songs that set a definite mood. "Kidnap," also from THE KID, frames one of film's most memorable and heartwrenching scenes, when the Kid is taken from The Tramp -- and the music swoops and swells with all the same agony and heartache, climaxing with soft violins and flutes crying through a theme that eventually became one of Chaplin's signature tunes. Good stuff.
On a lighter note, the CD also contains the famous "Dance of the Rolls" from THE GOLDRUSH and "The Circus March" from THE CIRCUS, one of Chaplin's most laugh-out-loud films.
It is in his music for CITY LIGHTS and MODERN TIMES, though, where Chaplin the musician really shines. The drunken vignettes of the four "Nightclub" tracks make for great listening, but it's the "Boxing Ring" music that you'll end up cranking through the stereo speakers, with its blaring trumpets and up-and-down brass line (and in these new recordings, you can even hear the frantic timpani swooshing juuuuust behind it all).
The music of MODERN TIMES bring the album to an appropriate close, with the refrain from "Smile" fading out as the final fanfare swells -- fittingly enough, it was this music that played as The Tramp (with the girl finally on his arm) walked off into the sunset (or sunrise, in this case) in the final scene of what would be his last truly "silent" film.
As an import, it costs a little more. But if you're a Chaplin aficianado -- or even just a collector of film scores -- this belongs in your collection.
