About the Artist
It is perhaps inevitable that the new generation of live musicians, born and bred on hip-hop and dance production, react to the musical challenges laid down by DJ culture. With the easy virtuosity that is the hallmark of musical greatness, Kudu rises to the challenge, mining jazz, hip-hop, electronica and soul to create a fiercely original, modern and accessible live sound.
Product Description
Kudu, their self-titled debut album, is a mixture of catchy hooks, frenetic drum-n-bass rhythms, and innovative sonic textures. Produced by the band with Allen Towbin of Plexus, the record marks the arrival of a new voice and a new sound. The results are startling and essential. Kudu is the sound of the future.

Album Description
Kudu tap into Siouxsie circa 82, dark Chicago House circa 86, deep 70s Funk, and, consciously or not, UK Jungle Techno circa 91. They are real deal, and their music is so primal that they could just as validly be classed a rock act as a jazz or dance act. On stage Kudu are dark and raw and desperate, but their pop potential has always been apparent to anyone with ears for song craft and eyes for charisma. Death of the Party, set to be released on Nublu Records, confirms this perception. In addition to the aforesaid ingredients, Kudu on record have a sense of fun lifted from Deee-Lite, ESG, church in rural Georgia and parades in New Orleans.
Customer Reviews:
Simply Awesome!.......2006-03-20
It was a cold Saturday night, and I was in no mood for partying until a friend cajoled me into seeing Kudu at NuBlu in NYC.
I'm a huge afficionado of live music, and I've mostly seen it all. But, once in a while, one band somehow manages to write a new page in my encyclopedia of music. And that band is Kudu.
A vicious and unique mixture of pop, rock, dance/techno, soul and R&B, Kudu's music is daring enough to touch several bases but then intelligent enough to keep the listener intrigued with an overall edgy and fresh sound, replete with crisp drumming and serenading singing.
Undoubtedly, this is one of those bands that one must see live to appreciate comrehensively. The show was simply awesome! The lead singer reeled the audience in with her powerful (and soulful) voice, while the drummer just brimmed over with charisma.
Regardless of your taste, any true fan of music would appreciate innovation, and that's what Kudu is all about. It's a mystery that they have yet to hit the mainstream, but then again, judging by what makes it onto MTV, does anyone really want mainstream?

Customer Reviews:
Esther Phillips' best..........2005-11-17
Esther Phillips (formerly "Little" Esther Phillips of Johnny Otis' band) had a unique voice that might be classified as an acquired taste, but if you are a fan of the blues or soul/R&B it is one that you have to hear. I wasn't familiar with her work from the period of her career which is contained on this collection (1971-1977) but was impressed with her singing on blues songs such as "Cherry Red" and "Black Eyed Blues". She really knew how to deliver in a pure blues setting, and her guitarist on these songs was impressive too. (The names of the backing musicians are not available in the liner notes, however the front of the disc states that Joe Beck, (guitar), Ron Carter (bass), Billy Cobham (drums), and Maceo Parker (saxaphone) are all featured on this collection. Who plays on what song is not mentioned, although its pretty easy to pick out Maceo Parker's playing on some of these songs if you've heard enough of his work with James Brown. Also interesting are the bold choices Esther Phillips made in choosing material: she does a great job making Bill Withers' "Use Me" her own and her version of Gil Scott Heron's "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is just as powerful as the original recording. She also chose to cover Eugene McDaniels' "Disposable Society" and did a really funky version of that. This disc is solid until you get to some of her late 70's tracks like "What A Difference A Day Makes", her disco version of the song made famous by Dinah Washington. Although this was a big hit for her, it sounds dated today and I usually end up skipping the end of the disc which contains her disco material. The majority of this collection contains strong material though and is definitely worth buying.
Esther: Act Four, Scene One.......2005-02-23
This is an excellent collection of Esther's 1970's jazz, blues, funk, and disco recordings on the Kudu label. The booklet includes a short essay and no detailed track information. A collection comprehensive of Esther's career would be great, but this is a groovy compilation of her later work. RIP Esther.
STUNNING ESTHER PHILLIPS ANTHOLOGY!!!.......2004-07-08
Esther Phillips was a huge child star who traveled for years with Johnny Otis as the "girl singer" of the band through the 50's then turned into a stunning and sophisicated adult artist who was one the the finest stylists ever by the 60's with her hit "Release Me" which is the definitive version of this classic! Buy the time the 70's came around Esther matured into a stunning talent that was peerless and extraordinary and that is where this wonderful anthology comes in. Starting off with the legendary classic "From A Whisper To A Scream" which received a Grammy, (given to a deserving Esther by Aretha Franklin!) "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is a riveting tale of the pain of addiction that takes the subject straight on and Esther turns this song inside out and makes it a incomparable classic. "From A Whisper To A Scream" is the haunting title song that is completely gut-renching and wildly soulful followed by a passionate "Baby I'm For Real" that is the definitive version of this classic!! Esther inhabits each of these songs so completely with raw & earthy emotion that each becomes her own and "That's All Right With Me" is another passion filled gorgeous performance. The blues is something Esther knew well and "'Til My Back Ain't Got No Bone" is great funky blues at its very best. Two rhythm cookers "I've Never Found A Man (To Love Me Like You Do)" and "Use Me" show the rocking and funky side of Esther and makes one wonder why she didn't have more chart success!! Why didn't the radio programmers of America play this dynamite singer more than just the few token hits that were played? It is clear from this great set of masterworks that many "hits" should have happened. A brilliant Esther goes deep inside the blues in the brilliant "Cherry Red" which is a real stunner as is a really funky version of Joe Cocker's "Black-Eyed Blues". Bill Withers "Justified" is another funky gritty Esther masterpiece and had these great tracks received airplay in the 70's they would have been huge hits as Esther is kind of like a female Curtis Mayfield but a total original unlike anyone else!! Another cooker "Doing Our Thing" is riveting and wildly rhythmic while "Disposable Society" is an amazing tour-de-force with a great funky groove and a chilling message! A hit "What A Diff'rence A Day Makes" and "Unforgettable" are both classic Esther in another great groove along with all her Beck produced songs such as the soulful "I Can Stand A Little Rain" and Jackie DeShannon's engrossing "Pure Natural Love" which rocks out in a sophisicated soulful way that is winning. Another brilliant LP from Esther was "Capricorn Princess" and from that masterwork comes a beautifully moving version of the standard "I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do" which is equal to the classic versions recorded earlier by Carmen McRae and Jackie DeShannon. Closing is an incredible concert version of "God Bless The Child" (who's got his own) and Esther certainly did have her own and was a totally brilliant once in a lifetime original classic!!! Thank you Esther for all of the wonderful years of great entertainment and for the incredible brilliance you left behind...THIS IS A MASTERPIECE!!!

Slamming vocals and drums..........2004-08-01
This album caught me by surprise. The second song "Sugar" is a powerful mix of drums, electronic keyboard and powerful vocals that make you just want to play the song over and over again. I received a copy of this CD from a friend and he claims he knows the drummer and the drum set in #2 was completely done by hand...wow what a talent if that is true! #2 Sugar is worth the entire CD - and I got another copy cheap from amazon! Enjoy.
Kudu has a clue!.......2003-04-04
Yo i heard their new track on some compilation, their song is, i've been hit! it is off the chain so if this is any indication of how their album will sound then i am sold!............please believe this group has a pioneering sound............a must buy! Kudu keep workin yur vudu!
Best thing I've heard in a long time.......2001-09-14
In addition to the stunning talent of the musicians in kudu, the song writing, recording, and overall compostition of the album is incredible. No one should be without it.
These guys are bad mutha's.......2001-04-14
THE MOST AMAZING DRUMMER ON THE PLANET! SICK VOCALS, SONIC GENIUS. If you want to hear a tight band with original ideas, buy this cd. If Kudu's debut hasn't gone platinum already, it will soon.
Simply Amazing.......2001-04-11
Her vocals Lyrics and bass playing define lush soul. His Drumming is almost unhuman - Hypnotic, virtuostic, Entrancing, and ADDICTIVE! Incredible is the only word I can think of to describe this. The total combination of this sound is so new and refreshing, it feels great to know that quality new music is on the way. I recommend this to anyone who likes to groove, and who likes to love.

Customer Reviews:
Favorite disc by Favorite singer!.......2006-11-29
This whole disc is just so delicious. Not only to my subjective ears, either. Whenever I'm playing this in my salon, my customer always asks, "Who IS that?" Each song is different, gorgeously produced with a big, soulful 1970s sound that Creed Taylor had imagined would unite Jazz with R&B. And what amazing songs: starting with the angry "Justified"-"'cuz when I met ya, baby, Florence Nightingale shoulda been your Nurse but ole Red Cross Me, I'm gonna take the job but now I think I'm to the point I need one myself, really!" Mmm! Carolyn Franklin (Aretha's sister) wrote "Too Many Roads Between Us" surely up there with "Neither One of Us..." as one of the saddest love songs ever. "You Could Have Had Me..." by Leonard Feather could have been seedn as kissing up to the auther of The Jazz Encyclopedia so Esther hangs out on the song for almost eight minutes and finds meat never thought to be on that bone! "I've Only Known A Stranger" Wow! Breath taking. Old style Jazz with Duke Ellington's "I Got It Bad" but feel it, funk it, make it new. Go Esther! A big surprise for us old people who used to listen to Esther on LP or 8track- a NEW song "Tangle In Your Lifeline" is as personal and lovely as anything whe ever recorded. When I bought this cd, it was only available as an import at $22.95. Now you can get it for under $11! What are you waiting for?
Esther's 3rd CTI Masterpiece!.......2004-02-28
This was the third album that Esther cut for Creed Taylor's CTI album. It marked a change from the previous two in that the string arrangements were undertaken for the first time with this artist, by Bob James; it's a subtle but very important change. Secondly the material stretches out from the straight-ahead R&B to embrace a range of varying styles. This being the case, the album is not as 'immediate' as the previous two, but is just as satisfying when it yields all its nuances. My favourite tracks are her reading of Bill Wither's "Justified" which is a great version. There's a particularly sensual and burning version of "I've only known a stranger" and a straight ahead jazz version of Leonard Feather's "You could have had me baby".While I'm writing about it I should also mention the title track, which is a Joe Cocker track given a particularly good makeover. That's four out of the seven tracks mentioned already, so when you consider that there's a bonus unreleased track as well out of the remaining three,it makes you realise what good value it is. Add in an excellent set of sleeve notes, and this is another 'must have' Esther Phillips album!
