As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. 5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-12

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03

Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.

3 out of 5 stars Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

3 out of 5 stars Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

4 out of 5 stars The first three episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation".......2006-02-23

"Encounter at Farpoint" (Written by D.C. Fontana and Gene Roddenberry, First aired September 28, 1987) was the two-hour pilot "movie" that introduced us to the new crew of the new starship "Enterprise-D" as they come together for the first time on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The initial mission for the Galaxy-class starship is to check out Farpoint Station, which has been created on Deneb IV. Captain Jean-Luc Picard is not only trying to negotiate an agreement for Starfleet to use the station, but to try and learn how the Bandi built something that is clearly beyond their technological capabilities. But before they even get to the station, the "Enterprise" runs into Q, a mysterious and powerful being who puts the crew on trial for the sins of humanity. If Picard cannot convince Q to overturn the verdict, the crew will die (Warp 4).

In the second "part" of the story, the mission to Farpoint will be Picard's opportunity to prove the worth of humanity, but Q gives him only 24 hours to make his case. At Farpoint, Picard meets his new first officer and the rest of his crew, and on the planet's surface is surprised to discover that your wishes come true. Then a strange "ship" appears and starts blasting the Bandi city. You all know how small the Star Trek universe really is, so everything ends up being related and the "Enterprise" passes this initial test, because there are more episodes to come after this one (Warp 4.5).

In terms of the plot lines the first encounter with Q is of much more importance than solving the mystery of Farpoint Station. Little did we know that the trial would become the bookends for the series, but then I am betting that the creators did not know that either as the beginning. There is also a delightful cameo by DeForrest Kelly and the infamous "Imzadi" mental exchange between Riker and Troi that the producers quickly regretted (although eventually it would give us the best STNG book of the same title by Peter David). However, the masterstroke was the creation of Jean-Luc Picard and the casting of Patrick Stewart. Face it, one look at Picard and you know he is not Jim Kirk, but as soon as you hear that voice you just do not care.

An incredibly bad choice as the first episode to follow the two-part pilot, "The Naked Now" parallels "The Naked Time" episode from the original series. The key difference is that we had a much more solid understand of the characters on Star Trek before we watched them be stripped of their facades. The scene where Spock weeps for his parents and Kirk talks of his love for the Enterprise are emotionally significant because they have been set up by our complete understanding of these two characters. In "The Naked Now" the crew of this new Enterprise are still character types more than fully realized characters.

Consequently, this particular episode makes more sense out of context, if you fill in all that you learn about the characters in the years to come. But even from that perspective this a very shallow exploration of Picard and the others and just not worth the effort. "The Naked Now" continues some of the character and relationship exposition from the pilot, providing our first real proof of boy genius Wesley Crusher and the first hint of any feelings between Captain Picard and Doctor Crusher. The toss off scene of Tasha seducing Data does become poignant following her death, but right now it is just a joke (Warp 3).

I remember when I first watched this episode thinking it was not a good sign that the producers were already trying to rip-off the original Trek. When you watch the first season it becomes pretty clear that was exactly what they were trying to do with the vast majority of episodes. However, this particular episode represents the absolutely worst way to do so. The best, of course, would be the Deep Space Nine episode that blends so seemlessly with "The Trouble With Tribbles."

"Encounter at Farpoint" is worth a second look just to see how they laid the foundation for what was to come and even, in the show's second season, kicked it into warp drive. I still remember people actually gathering at my house to watch the first new "Star Trek" episode in two decades. As much as we cherish the original series because it gave us something so different from what we had to endure before in terms of science fiction on television, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is really the flagship series in the franchise.

This cd is very good. It contains music from the pilot episode of Star Trek- The Next Generation, including the theme song. The music is very clear, without a lot of backround noise. It has provided many hours of enjoyable listening. I would recmmend this cd for all Star Trek fans. Also, check out the collection of Star Wars cds. They are really good too!

Album Description

Incorporating his straight-ahead and free jazz influences with both his classical and his Eastern music sensitivities, maestro Reggie Workman has taken the next exciting step beyond Summit Conference fast forward into the musical future. To a heady mix of traditional jazz instrumentation, he has added the texture and flavors of harp, tablas, and electronics. By varying the combination of players from piece to piece, Workman has produced a kaleidoscope of differing textures on Cerebral Caverns, using this broad and changing palette to create a compelling disc which never fails to rivet the listener's attention.

"Summit Conference conveyed that we lived through the music," explains Workman, "we started with the music and we are still contributing. For Cerebral Caverns, I wanted to make a different statement," he continues, "so there are the additional voices of harpist Elizabeth Panzer and Bangladesh native Tapan Modak on tablas. And, although Geri Allen doesn't have the historical experience that Sam, Julian, and I have, she is an ideal addition to the summit conference. She's a brilliant pianist, and I know will be heard from for a long time to come."

By varying the combination of players from piece to piece and by incorporating his straight-ahead and free jazz influences with his classical and Eastern music sensibilities, Workman has created a kaleidoscope of textures. On "Ballad Explorations I," Rivers and Priester communicate with Workman effortlessly. The interplay of Priester's trombone, Rivers's tenor sax, and Workman's bass creates a dark, pensive mood of shaded tones that's a seamless dialogue."What's In Your Hand" is an up, bright, exploratory piece that captures the moment with a trio of Workman, Allen, and Hemingway. "This piece was basically unplanned, as if we were saying 'we're all here right now, and we all have something to say, so let's say it.' The title," Workman explains, "comes from a statement I recall Adam Clayton Powell making to Congress: "All right, what's in your hand? What are you bringing to the table?" This was improvised, and I found that both Geri and Gerry really had something to say, they! really had something in their hands."

4 out of 5 stars a bevy of small combos.......2006-10-13

i like how workman broke the group up into different arrangements for each piece, allowing space for each of the players. al foster's sound is energetic, geri allen stretches in a way i don't hear her on her own cd's.
there's all out playing by sam rivers and julian priester on fast forward. half of my soul is a combination of eastern music and the western ballad. the entire cd works well with an eastern influence, particularly the combination of bass, harp, flute and tablas.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding 90s Album From Some Greats Of The 60s.......2000-09-26

"Cerebral Caverns" is an outstanding 90s album made by some of the great jazz names of the 60s. Bassist Reggie Workman, who gained fame as a member of John Coltrane's quartet and as a sideman on some classic Blue Note albums of the 60s, has assembled an all-star group featuring some great players who first made their names in the 60s -- Sam Rivers, Julian Priester and Al Foster -- and some great players of the 80s and 90s -- Gerry Hemingway and Geri Allen. "Cerebral Caverns" alternates between spacious, Middle Eastern-tinged soundscapes like "Cerebral Caverns," "Ballad Explorations" and "Seasonal Elements," largely due to the inclusion of tabla player Tapan Hudak and harpist Elizabeth Ranzer, and modern jazz explorations like "Fast Forward," "Half Of My Soul" and "Evolution." It is quite refreshing to see that Workman, who helped forge the new sound in the 60s on the seminal Coltrane Village Vanguard recordings, is still exploring jazz's future almost forty years later.

5 out of 5 stars traditional new orleans jazz at its very very best.......2000-06-24

For some strange reason, a lot of high brow musicians and wannabe jazz artists tend to snigger a bit at the mention of the great New Orleans clarinet player George Lewis and his alumni of the 40s and 50s. This album is such a gem that anyone who manages to resist foot-tapping is likely to be dead. Lewis and his band are in magnificent shape, and the material is full of life and beauty. This music may not be advanced or intellectual or whatever, it's just plain funky, and the connection to every modern New Orleans type music is obvious. Get this album now, you hear?

          Product Description

Genre: dark ambient soundscapes The volcanic island of Thera or Thira, also known as Santorini, is located in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Asia Minor. Once inside the mouth, it opens up into a large room with four passages leading in different directions. There is a constant sound of water droplets, and beautiful colored stalactites and stalagmites line the ceiling, walls, and floors. Great artifacts were found, like animal bones of unknown origins, ancient art work and maybe a gateway to the lost city of Atlantis. ...and you thought Buck Rogers discovered Atlantis. Lane s music can be heard on DATELINE NBC, SPIKE TV, UNIVISION, SONY PLAY STATION, as well as outstanding syndicated radio shows like "STAR'S END", "MUSICAL STARSTREAMS", "E-MUSIC", "ECHEOS and the #2 most popular Contemporary Music program on NPR (National Public Radio) "MUSIC FROM THE HEARTS OF SPACE". Brannan Lane is an international recording artist with 20 plus CDs to his credit in ambient, new age and world music fields.

5 out of 5 stars Never judge a book by its cover........2002-07-21

Never judge a book by its cover - a true lesson when it came to giving serious consideration to reviewing this disc. The cover design is just plain busy and unnecessarily gothic, giving away too much before you get to experience the real treasures held inside! OK, that aside, I am pleased to have given this one a
comprehensive spin. Nashville's own Brannan Lane couldn't be further from the Grand Ole Opry on the mesmerizing Cavern 1 - Black Air. Multiple dark ambient layers are richly drenched in a continuous flow of multi-tracked fountains. Thera (a volcanic island also known as Santorini), as stated on the cd jacket, is the Greek word for fear, and realizing its somber embrace is Lane's task on this hour long player. We hear angelic swirls, deep tonal gongs reverberating and building with percussive resonance. Having been heard on the radio broadcast show
Music from the Hearts of Space, this sound sculptor seems rightly fitted for the task of creating atmosphere. If this were a film soundtrack we see 20 story high cavernous and icy hollows and are surrounded by mystical enchanted haunted kingdoms. This disc renders the listener passive and encircled by its space.
Cavern II - Ancient Art continues to build on the growing cinematic harmonies building an arsenal of sound. Spirits rise up high and converge in a twisting iridescence on the short and effective Death from Above. Bodies of water drip, spill and flood throughout this adventure, at times quite stimulating, at other times menacing. Sea In The Dark is like a winding vessel reminiscent of surveying an imaginary alter-world, Atlantis perhaps? The illusions run deep here. Lane's ability to capture stimulant and visionary atmosphere comes from his work in multiple genres, from Caribbean to Country, from Trance to Blues.
Some may say this provocative composer may be reaching too far. I can only hope he opts for creating more work in this mode. There are a lot of repetitive sound themes over the generous hour here, but Lane brings us into a trance-like state and then Into the Light. On this final track it is as though we have
channeled to the other side of a virtual landscape. We have been released from the mysterious magnetic pull and sail away with a galaxy of wildlife. This, my first exposure, to an artist with a dozen or so recordings in his name, was certainly worth the trip!

5 out of 5 stars This is a very dark passage to a place that only Lane can so.......2001-02-02

"Yo! Hello down there! Do ya need any more rope? Hey! You okay? Hey!"

They each run towards the edge of the freshly discovered Theran Abyss, echoing its horrid silence, staring silently as the rope is pulled back up. Their friend is not there - the rope is a shredded mass of frayed ends. What they hear in the depths of the blackness beneath them is an indescribable miasma of gurglings and moans. A blast of methane-heavy winds suddenly creates an intense vortex around them. Vertigo overwhelms them in the midst of their confusion and panic. They become a tangled mass of flailing limbs, scrabbling for a grip on the slippery cave floor. All light has vanished and in the coldest of any darkness they have ever known, their screams mingle as one nauseating cry - they are unheard in the vast pit.

Well that was fun! Yeah, Lane's soundtrack work, ambient feartrack, and noir places of dripping wet slime inspired me. Lane points out that "Thera" is the Greek word for fear - and such is the effect of his ambient art. This is that darkness of Robert Rich and old Lustmord. It is the crushing, smothering, paranoia and asphyxiating soundtunnels of the hopelessly claustrophobic. This is deep wetness, thick darkness, endless wanderings of places one needs to stay away from lest ye dieth amongst yon hellspawned ruins of things accursed and best forgotten. Drip, drip, drip, echoey essences, and horrific howlings of draconian behemoths aneath, greet your ears.

Lane has crafted an extended meander beneath and within ancient caverns of nigh unto the Underworld's entry. You can hear the headwaters of river Styx and sense that nagging guilt that ye are in trespass of abodes of the charnel legions. Only dead and blind things be permitted to wander these regions. "What is your pleasure? The price ye ask? Yer soul, yer mind, and that VISA card - thou fool!"

This is a very dark passage to a place that only Lane can so deftly create. This may really bother some listeners as it gets right next to "the fear complex" in the psyche. This is not music, not "a walk in the park" ambience - this is fear, this is a prelude to doom. If it were not for Lane releasing us in the final track, "Into the Light", one wanders if this might not be one of the most completely dank and dark releases I have experienced in year 2000. Lane - market this stuff to movie producers! It's great - spooked even me. ~ John W. Patterson
