Amazon.com essential recording
This extremely short-lived lineup of Messengers recorded only once together--in April 1959 at New York's Birdland. This engaging and accessible two-CD collection documents this incarnation, which finds tenor Hank Mobley (one of the earliest Messengers) returning to the fold as a stopgap between recently departed Benny Golson and soon-to-join Wayne Shorter. The remainder of the quintet--Lee Morgan, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt--are all holdovers from the classic Moanin' lineup, which remains Blakey's funkiest. Mobley adds three compositions to a repertoire that includes Thelonious Monk's tricky "Justice," Ray Bryant's irresistibly groovy "Chicken an' Dumplins," and Randy Weston's easy-swaying "Hi-Fly." Morgan and Mobley are in typically fine form throughout this in-the-pocket set. --Marc Greilsamer

Simply the best of Blue Note hard bop.......2007-01-27
This is my favorite Art Blakey album, and one of my favorite Blue Note albums. The energy is incredible, and the solos are superb. The fact that it is a live album just makes it that much more impressive. As mentioned in a previous review, the recording quality is amazing. Rudy Van Gelder's use of 1959 portable technology rivals, if not surpasses, any contemporary jazz recording I've heard. One memorable moment is during Hipsippy Blues (4:25) when Blakey yells "blow your horn" as encouragement to Morgan as his solo starts heating up. Worth it just for the eleven minute rendition of "Close Your Eyes" which opens with Lee Morgan's invitation to "leave your worldly troubles behind, and come in here and swing."
Mobs Is the Man.......2006-04-23
This is the same group as the one on Art's best-selling "Moanin'" album with the exception of Hank Mobley, who replaces Benny Golson on tenor saxophone. It's Mobley's presence that makes all of the difference, so much so that I would rank this session with another two-fer recording at the same location, "Art Blakey at Birdland," which tries to complement the undeniable genius of Clifford Brown with the pedestrian playing of Lou Donaldson.
Previous reviewers have pointed out the brilliance of Lee Morgan's solo on "Justice" (Monk's "Evidence," renamed by Blakey for reasons that elude me), but listen to the strong follow-up on the same tune by Mobley. The drive, the ideas, the quote ("Sonny Boy"), and the passion all contribute to a stirring solo that simply picks up where Morgan left off. (The same Monk tune is featured, but with its more popular title, "Evidence," on a Bluebird CD of a slightly earlier session with Golson--"Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers: Paris, 1958." Morgan's solo, though completely different on this occasion, is equally inventive.)
As usual Mobley is a story-teller of the first order, making every phrase count (a striking contrast to the garrulous pyrotechnics of a Golson solo). The ensemble spirit, the announcements of Blakey and Pee Wee Marquette, the interaction among the musicians and crowd--this was another unrepeatable musical event that you won't want to be without. If there's a caveat, it's my personal aversion to some of the mixing choices made by recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder. He brings each player front and center but at the expense of ensemble "depth" and occasionally of individual tonal expressiveness. Mobley's sound is unnecessarily and uncharacteristically hard-edged and testosterone-soaked, making him sound harsh and even on the verge of distortion at times. Fortunately, I have enough other recordings by Mobley before, during, and after this one to know better.
[My thanks to a reader who explained the "Justice"/"Evidence" confusion. Monk wrote a tune based on the changes to "Just You, Just Me," so he called it "Just Us," which metamorphosed phonetically into "Justice," which in turn metamorphosed semantically into "Evidence." At least on this particular night, Art must have had a preference for the earlier title.]
Would you buy a Cd just because of a trumpet solo?.......2000-08-03
Well, you might. This Cd is the best Jazz Messengers album I have ever heard since "A Night at Birdland vol.1&2" with Clifford, and the killer albuns "Moanin'" and "Paris 1958" with Lee Morgan. About the "solo" thing, (and about Clifford and Lee Morgan) this Cd has one of the best solos by Lee Morgan I have ever heard. I agree with the previous review: the solo on "Justice" is AWESOME!!! If you heard some tunes from the "Paris 1958" album (which is a Live album) you should know that Lee just explodes on live performances. This album "At The Jazz Corner vol 1&2" is also live and it includes TWO sessions of "smoking" Lee Morgan. By the way, you should also try the tune "Kiss and Run" on the Sonny Rollins "plus 4" album. Then you will hear one of the most inspired solos by Clifford Brown. If you are a Jazz Messenger FAN, GO FOR IT!!!
Smokin'!.......1999-12-03
WARNING! THIS CD HAS ENOUGH RAW ENERGY TO INCREASE THE EARTHS ORBIT AND LIGHTEN THE FORCE OF GRAVITY IN A 30 FT. RADIUS OF YOUR STEREO.! well that might be a bit of hyperbole, but there are enough sparks generated here to power a small nuclear reactor. from beginning to end this album soars with intense solos from all, especially Morgan, who is barely 21 years old, but probably playing at the peak of the first stage of his career. Enough can't be said about the intensity of this album, which was recorded remarkably well for a live performance of that time (4/15/59). Highlights include a nine minute rendition of "The Theme" played at a more relaxed tempo. A lesser known Monk title, "Justice", which contains one of my favorite Lee Morgan solos of all time. An early version of Bobby Timmons' "Hi-Fly" and "Just Coolin'" a jazz waltz written by Mobley, one of his best early compositions in my lay-oppinion. If you're new to jazz, or the music of Art Blakey, this is great place to start your interest. Very accessable, hard-swinging music by the greatest hard-bop jazz group in history. Loud, fiery music!

Not to be confused with At the Jazz Corner of the World, the Messengers' 1959 Birdland recording (which featured tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley), Meet was recorded the following year at the band's favored venue with the still-rawboned tenorist Wayne Shorter joining trumpeter Lee Morgan on an explosive front line. Originally released in separate volumes but here presented as a two-CD set, the album maintains the Messengers' ties to the underappreciated Mobley via three originals that he never recorded himself. The emphasis is less on catchy tunes than full-bore blowing, with the rhythm section of Bobby Timmons, Jymie Merritt, and the unbeatable Blakey plumbing their bag of hard-bop tricks to push the music through the grooves. --Lloyd Sachs

Sounds grate........2005-07-06
The sound quality on this double-disc set is remarkably poor. The mono Birdland sets from 1954 are much better in this regard, as is the similarly titled date from 1959, featuring Hank Mobley. Not only the piano, but also the horns distort and the sound in general has a distinctly 'hard' quality - it's bad enough to make listening difficult to enjoy, especially for long sessions. The music itself is good, but not essential - there are many Art Blakey discs that outshine this one.
*
The aforementioned Birdland dates, with Clifford Brown on trumpet, are a much better place to sample the Messengers prowess. Mosaic, Buhaina's Delight, Free For All, Indestructible, Moanin'...all these discs are terrific. If it's any guide, I have over a dozen Blakey recordings and this is close to the least precious.
Great playing, not so great sound quality.......2003-10-22
This lineup of the Jazz Messengers made a bunch of great albums for Blue Note and they're all interchangeable to some degree. This recording from Birdland somehow slips past the radar when discussing the Shorter-Morgan-Timmons lineup. The sound quality leaves a lot to be desired (lots of distortion). It was also out of print for a while and there's another album recorded a year earlier with an almost identical name ("At the Jazz Corner of the World") and lineup (sub Hank Mobley for Shorter).
Nevertheless, it's worth picking up because this is an excellent performance by a terrific group. My favorite performances are "Round About Midnight", "The Breeze and I", and Hank Mobley's mysterious "High Modes". (Despite not playing on the album, Hank contributed 3 of the compositions.) Aside from "The Summit" we don't hear much of Wayne Shorter the composer, but his playing, as on most music from this period, is intense and unpredictable. The album is worth buying just to hear Wayne.
If you like grooving, intense hard bop, then the Jazz Messengers with Shorter, Morgan, and Timmons is an essential listening experience. And after checking them out on studio albums such as "The Big Beat" or "A Night in Tunisia", it's definitely worth meeting them at the Jazz Corner of the World.
Great hard bop and a fun listen.......2002-07-25
"Jazz shakes off the dust of every-day life."
-Art Blakey
Blakey's Jazz Messengers are heard on this double live set from NYC's Birdland in 1960, recorded by the master Ruby Van Gelder. With a stellar line up including Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter, the music cooks. And with new remastering by Van Gelder, any questions I had about sound quality were immediately answered.
Blakey is the solid foundation of course, expertly guiding these jams through a mosaic of timbres and textures. The introductions by Pee Wee Marquette are fun to listen to and place the listener right in the jazz club atmosphere. I spent days listening to both discs on shuffle-play, so unfortunately I cannot comment on any specific track-I was never sure which one I was listening to! I just know that the music is great and the live setting is fun and I enjoyed everything I heard.

At the Jazz Corner of the World V.2.......2000-07-05
This 1959 live recording captures the true essence of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers as an institution that systematically produced dynamic soloists and notable bandleaders throughout its illustrious existence. This band features the 21 year-old Lee Morgan on trumpet, fresh from the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band. Lee's fiery solos depict a desperate urgency, sometimes lending a church-house feeling with his half-valve effects. Hank Mobley makes his statement on the tenor sax with his rhythmic agility and drive, also contributing an original composition, "M & M", an up tempo tune that has become the trademark of the Jazz Messengers. Composer Bobby Timmons, "Moanin', Dis Here, Dat Dere", "So Tired", owns the piano chair by "playing in the pocket" and hitting the mark with his funky chords and aggressive solos. Bassist Jymie Merritt is solid throughout. Between Jymie's pulsating bass lines and Art's sock cymbal, there is never a question as to where the time lies. Finally, there's the leader of the Jazz Messengers, drummer Art Blakey--he's hard not to notice. If Art catches you hiding out on the bandstand, he'll run over you like a steamroller and never look back. One must take note of the inventiveness of his constant cross-rhythms through the blistering tempos that are offered. The selection of tunes include the previously mentioned, M&M by Mobley, "Hi-Fly", a Randy Weston composition, a deceptively laid back tune that is a lesson on how to swing a ballad real hard. Ray Bryant's, "Chicken `An Dumplins", is where the band puts on the pots with some home cookin'. "Art's Revelation" by pianist Gildo Mahones truly tests the stamina of each of the performers. Then there is a nine-minute-plus version of "The Theme", a familiar piece with Messenger fans. This live recording has also documented some of the ambience and the memories of Birdland. For those of us who were there, the jazz world will sorely miss the relaxed atmosphere of this club...hearing the music counterpoint with tinkling glasses, ringing cash registers, applause and laughter. This album has it all. Five Stars!
