There has been no lack of previously unissued material by the late Stan Getz coming out on CD, but the opportunity to get a further taste of the great tenor saxophonist's exceptional final period is not to be passed on. Recorded two months before his death in 1989 (and two years after the brilliant club dates documented on Anniversary and Serenity), Bossas and Ballads finds him in top form, continuing his memorable association with pianist Kenny Barron. Produced for A&M by Herb Alpert, but shelved in favor of the synthesizered Apasionado, this is vintage Getz: cool and relaxed but possessed of a sneaky explosive power. The man's lyricism could be devastating, and knowing he would be soon gone adds to the potency of his expression on songs such as "Sunshower" (one of five tunes by Barron), Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes" and Sam Rivers' "Beatrice." A quarter century after spearheading the bossa nova movement in America, he brings a bit less lilt to the form, but more body, never resting on his inventions. --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2006-09-18
I would just like to advice people to pick up this great title. I listened to it through today again and I urge to you - please listen to the whole CD through. It is really very very beautiful music and things start to get really cosy after song 4. It is more straight jazz than "Bossas" which I think is used more for marketing purposes to tie in with the successful Bossa recordings by Getz.
The trio surrounding Getz is really very fine indeed. Barron's solos stand out and the recording is first rate!!
get it!
The Best Stan Getz Ever.......2005-04-11
This is a gem of a record, as the performances by Stan Getz, George Mraz, Kenny Barron and Victor Lewis are just superb. To think that it was a lost recording because of the not-so-serious other Stan Getz pop recording of the time is a tragedy. This CD exemplifies Stan Getz's artistic talents at its best!
SUPER COOL GETZ.......2005-02-04
Very sophisticated and super smooth.
Although the songs were recorded in 1989 two years before his death, this record shows that Stan Getz never lost his touch. The emotion that pours from his sax on this record is unbelievably moving. Listen to in particular "Soul Eyes" and "The Wind". If you are a fan of his music go buy it. You will not be disappointed!
Lost.....But Thankfully Found!.......2004-08-24
Near the end of his life I had the opportunity to hear Stan Getz perform live at Carnegie Hall with a quartet that featured pianist Kenny Barron. Getz then (as he is also quoted in the liner notes of this CD) referred to Barron as "the other half of my musical heart." Quite a compliment indeed! Along with Chick Corea, who performed with Getz on the superb recordings "Sweet Rain" and "Captain Marvel," Barron was a perfect match for the lyrical Getz. In addition to this session Getz and Barron recorded in a quartet setting at least three other times; these sessions are available on the CDs "Anniversary," "Serenity," and "Soul Eyes." I am glad to own all four. You will be too!
This is a great album.......2004-08-18
If you like Stan Getz, this album is a must for your collection. It swings between the sultry with bossas and latin overtones in many heretofore unheard tunes. Well worth the price, with Kenny Barron on piano, George Mraz (?) on bass and Victor Lewis on drums. Unhurried, produced by Herb Alpert, and that says a bunch right there.

Lovely Album, occasionally hindered by original recording quality........2006-10-29
I would have given this album five stars but for the recording that has the drums, piano and bass sometimes sounding as though they were on the far side of the studio. I'm sure the remasterers have done a fine job but they must have been dealing with difficult original takes.
Overall it is a very fine CD that deserves attention from Chet Fans and anyone wanting to hear trumpet ballad playing at its finest.
Chet's Trumpet is clear, lyrical, sad and tender. He plays beautifully. Many of the numbers are standards that are well handled.
Baker at his best!.......2002-10-06
Got this CD about a week ago and have not been able to stop playing it since. Just a terrific album. "Cool Jazz." Here it is. I like the fact he keeps it mellow and unhurried, unlike some musicians, who think they have to keep hitting the high note in order to prove something--but then Chet Baker was known for his understated, smooth style. I love the music here. A real winner.
BREATHTAKING MUSIC.......2001-04-14
This is an astounding recording!
With sound remastered as if it were recorded in the year 2001 instead of in 1956, Chet Baker and various other stellar performers made supremely beautiful music for the Barclay label. The fourteen songs collected on this CD are the best of the best. Written by the likes of the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart, Dietz & Schwartz and others, this is a gorgeous recording--- very accessible, breathtakingly beautiful music, late night-sounding, sexy stuff with Chet Baker and his pals: jazz performers nonpareil. (including genius-pianist Dick Twardzik who died tragically after the first two recording sessions).
Baker's trumpet playing is nothing less than perfect and his one vocal on the final number, "Everything Happens To Me" is sweet and sad.
The packaging is beautiful: the liner notes are short, but informative and there are several terrific, sepia toned photographs from the Paris sessions and concerts. Highly Recommended.
50s West Coast hits Paris, France.......2000-07-24
I was put on to this record by Hans Peters, a Detroit audiophile who recommended it highly. I was not misled. This CD exemplifies the cool West Coast scene but in a European context. There are shades of Curthis Counce's trumpet player Jack Sheldon as the tracks bring back those memories of the Barclay Sessions. One of the best periods of Baker's recording career, highly recommended.
Vintage Chet.......2000-07-02
This is vintage early Chet Baker. He was apparently unknown (in Europe)and was in France for the first time. He put together a couple of groups which are on this teaser CD (I expect that Verve will evenually release the whole four CD set). I think that Baker improve significantly over the next twenty years, despite his self-destructive tendencies. The CD reflects the sound of Chet after leaving the Jerry Mulligan group. It is an engaging, simpler sound. These sessions are well recorded, considering they were done in the mid-50's. This is an enjoyable CD.

The Hollywood All-Star Sessions chronicle an important part of Art Pepper's comeback in the late '70s, when the altoist was surmounting years of heroin addiction and imprisonment to play with renewed energy and an impassioned creativity. His Complete Galaxy Recordings from the period have already been collected in a 16-CD set, but Pepper was also recording for the small Japanese label Atlas, appearing as "sideman" on a series of sessions that he usually led in all but name. This five-CD set gathers music from seven LPs recorded between 1979 and 1982, sessions that haven't been issued in the U.S. on CD, and adds two unissued alternate takes and an insightful essay by Laurie Pepper, Art's widow.
The Atlas intention was to recapture the flavor of West Coast jazz of the '50s, and the label matched Peeper with associates and material that would suggest the earlier era. Nominal leaders of the Hollywood All-Stars included West Coast veterans such as trumpeter Jack Sheldon, drummer Shelly Manne, and pianist Pete Jolly, as well as the younger trombonist Bill Watrous, with Pepper himself as the only constant. The material emphasizes standards and jazz tunes from the earlier era, and the group style is suavely relaxed, often with touches of counterpoint. If Pepper's intensity had always marked him as something of an outsider in the cool school, it was also an inspiration: this is small-group modern jazz that's often as lively as it is polished, with Pepper prodding Sheldon, Watrous, and tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper to outdo themselves.
Pepper's ballad playing had a uniquely visceral quality and it often stands out here, especially in a quartet session under pianist Pete Jolly's name, with Pepper unfettered by other horns. There are also meetings with two other giants of modern jazz alto, Sonny Stitt and Lee Konitz. The sessions with Stitt produced two LPs, with the focus strongly on blues and bop. It's spirited music, with Stitt's Parker-like lines contrasting with Pepper's alternately jagged and convoluted phrasing. If Stitt challenged Pepper's competitiveness, then Konitz ignited his imagination. Recorded just five months before Pepper's death, it's an encounter between two of the genuine improvisers, each shaping music anew with every gesture, phrase, and inflection, whether the material at hand is as novel as Konitz's "A Minor Blues in F" or as hackneyed as "Anniversary Song." --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
A must have for any fan of Art.......2006-03-21
Trust me, the price is worth it for some of the best jazz "showdowns" you will ever hear. The sessions with Stitt (tenor) are worth the price alone. I can't really say anything more than the other reviewers here have not already said, but I just wanted to throw in my two cents.
My tastes are very eclectic, But I can honestly say that these are some of the most fresh jazz improv sessions i have ever heard recorded, even if they are decades old.
So Glad I Picked This One Up!.......2005-11-09
I've only owned this box set for two weeks, but it has already joined the list of my favorite jazz recordings. Historia de un Amor (Disc 2) is one of the most beautiful performances I have ever heard.
A Novice Perspective.......2004-02-02
I write as someone with no background in jazz and only recently determined to give it a chance. Early exposure to fusion and speed-artists turned me off and now at midlife I am determined to mine out some of the nuggets. A few albums appealed at once; Kind of Blue, Jazz Samba, a few others; but nothing has reached out and grabbed me like this album. Simply superb performances and recordings. I can't wait till my own copy arrives.
Maybe he IS Roy Hobbs after all........2003-09-24
As much as I had responded to the emotionalism in Art Pepper's playing, I had never taken very seriously his quote about intending to be no less than "the greatest alto player of all time." Not until now.
These five extraordinary CD's capture the altoist in peak form in five different contexts, each swinging from start to finish and each featuring non-stop light and heat from one of jazz' most creative overachievers. During the middle of "Wee," taken at a torrid tempo on Disc 3, Pepper does something unexpected: he reverts to the conventional, proving he had chops sufficient to outpace the very best Bird disciple of them all. Sonny Stitt is his sparring mate. Pepper has just finished one of his jagged, angular solos, emitting brief bursts of brilliance, taking stabs at the overtone series, leaving shards of crystalized emotions in his choppy wake. Expressive and communicative, but certainly no proof of his command of either the horn or the complex syntax of bebop. Then Stitt follows with smooth, logical and assured Bird-like lines, spitting them out with consummate albeit formulaic ease. Apparently that was enough for Pepper, who takes after Stitt, exhibiting the killer instinct of a competitor who's about to humiliate the rival on the latter's own turf. Pepper's note choices, velocity, articulations, energy, and even fluency are sufficient not only to smoke Sonny but to expose his own former elliptical approach to improvisation as the "ruse" of a creator who under most circumstances will go the extra mile to avoid anything resembling a cliche, a familiar lick, a glib formula.
The man was not only the most moving alto saxophonist of them all but indeed may very well have been the best.
Harry Bosch fans - this is the "lost light" album.......2003-05-30
This is the music Harry talks about in "Lost Light." Good Stuff

Album Description
Exquisite, early 50s west coast `cool blues' from one of the genre's most cherished acts.
Johnny Moore's Three Blazers survived the late 1940s defection of their frontman, Charles Brown, to continue well into the next decade with the same musical sound and a variety of vocalists. This package features three of the best; Mari "Mauri" Jones, Frankie Ervin and "Lex" Nelson Alexander, along with Blazers musical stalwarts Oscar Moore and Eddie Williams.
Repertoire here is drawn, wherever possible, from original Modern and Dolphin tapes and acetates, and includes many previously unissued recordings and/or takes.
Virtually none of this repertoire has been reissued in the CD era - and the sound quality is astounding.
A long overdue follow-up to Ace's first - and equally recommended - Three Blazers CD, "Drifting And Dreaming".

Customer Reviews:
Great compliation of a rare session.......2007-05-07
This is the compliation of a session by two men who rarely got a feature in the bands they play in: Lou Blackburn and Freddie Hill. They were part of many West coast bands like Gerald Wilson and Teddy Edwards.
I've had a Fresh Soounds release of the first of the two sessions and enjoyed it for years. Now I have it all. It is representative of the talented musians out there during this period who were doing good work and were little appreciated for it.
4 solid stars (ITALY WORLD CHAMPION!!!).......2006-07-10
Four stars to me are the sign of a very good album, not absolutly essential but really good. In terms of Jazz history these stars mean a very significant music but not something that you can't find elsewhere, in other recordings by other artists. These two Imperial albums are not absolutly essential to own a a complete Jazz discography. But apart from this, these two sessions by Lou Blackburn are certainly enjoyable and I'm happy to own them. These albums are the legacy of a very good collaboration, the one that occured in the sixties between Lou and Teddy Hill (trumpet). The music is a fine and elegant hard bop (a lot of nice originals and few standards) with a nice texture builded up by the two horns, trombone and trumpet. Lou as a trombone player is similar in a sense to Curtis Fuller even if Curtis was a little more technical and "musical" and even a better (more ideas, more variety) soloist I'd say. But it's a fine release, if you love Jazz music of the period you can buy this with confidence. No problem absolutly. It's another very interesting Blue Note release, FINALLY without the Copy Controlled stuff. The worst thing on the planet after Zidane's head. Sorry guys, WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!!!
