Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Pianist Keith Jarrett has paid all sorts of tributes through his career, nodding to Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, and Bill Evans. But on this two-CD set, Jarrett picks particular versions of tunes to play off. So he pays homage to Lee Konitz on "Lover Man" and Sonny Rollins on "All the Things You Are." His formula for the tributes makes the music surprisingly engaged, dropping lyrical twists in his nod to Anita O'Day and cool loops when tipping Jim Hall. Where some of the so-called Standards Trio recordings veer into impressionism without regard to direction, this collection maintains tempered balance, even finding a classic Jarrett groove on "Sun Prayer," which drummer Jack DeJohnnette drives with a taut rhythmic clip. Alas, the tune fades in the groove's midst. But the package is barely any less strong for the fade and, in fact, stands above most of the other standards recordings. --Andrew Bartlett

"Casa" is the Portuguese word for "house." It's also the title of this melodic and moving tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim by the Oscar® and Grammy award-winning pianist-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and his vocalist wife, Paula. The Morelenbaums, who cofounded Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, both worked with the maestro, and almost all of the tracks here were recorded in Jobim's Rio home. The CD contains fluid and florid renditions of bossa nova-era classics from the Jobim canon, from "Amor em Paz"--with Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--and "Bonita" to "Vivo Sonhando." It also unveils rare songs like "Chanson pour Michelle," a short and sweet composition written for a soap opera, and a never-before-heard work, "Tema para Ana," an intimate piano/cello duet. Sakamoto's spare and splendid pianisms ring from Jobim's piano. Morelenbaum's singing cello tones complement his wife's angelic Portuguese and English vocals. Together this talented trio--with occasional accompaniment by percussionist Marcos Suzano, guitarist Luiz Brasil, vocalist Ed Motta, and bassist Zeca Assumpçao--beautifully exposes the French influences of Satie, Ravel, and Chopin in Jobim's music. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Celestial music - .......2007-05-07
My Profile: 43 yo - no music qualifications whatsoever-
I got this fine cd last year in my first time in Buenos Aires.. though my trip was for widenning my musical horizons.. what can I said that has not been adequately commented by more knowledable reviewers than I?.. the music is serene, celestial, non-strident...he piano, the cello and that voice!! you know you are prividledged in life to have a chance to comtemplate on this type of beauty... whatever scars we have in the soul and body, take a moment to soothe yourself..
Gentle Magic to Free Your Soul.......2007-03-28
I just love love love this CD. Everything about it is so artfully rendered, it takes my soul away to gently float free in a most beautiful place. Ms. Morelenbaun has a voice that, of all female vocals in the world, is often my most favorite to hear. Virtually no vibrato, just clean and clear exquisite and delicate classic femininity. Mr. Morelenbaum, Mr. Sakamoto and all supporting musicians provide the most sensitively interwoven instrumental skills that there could ever be; they perfectly ride, complement and contribute to the magical musical moment that is always now, in flowing pieces such as these. Of course, the ineffably beautiful heart and soul of the basic songs to start with are indispensible (thank you now and forever, o-most revered JC Jobim!). Honestly, this CD places in my top 10 of all time, especially now, in my more relaxed and gentle mature years... ;)
Some of the Best Music ever!.......2007-02-03
I came by the Morelenbaums by 'A Day in New york'. It was love at first
sound. I checked out to see if anything else was available. I found 'Casa'
and immediately ordered it. It has been in my CD player since I got it.
This from a Classical music buff and a college music degree. This music
defies description (I do like bossa nova and Jobim especially). This group is so together, it sounds like the members know exactly what each
other is thinking. It is all so right that it appears precision and class
like this is not possible. Paula's voice has a simple (without vibrato) beauty that is mesmerizing. The arrangements are exquisite. The Cello and piano never over-do and the whole is something you must hear to believe. I can only add to this - GET IT!!
jazzman.......2007-01-17
Absolutely fabulous renditions of Jobim. Paula's voice is so pure and
gentle, along with Jacques' cello gliding through the sketches. And the
pianist Sakamoto is perfect as well. I just love this cd. I quickly
obtained their other Jobim tribute cd "A Day in New York" (the Japanese
enhanced version with 5 bonus tracks), which is even further proof that
there is a musical heaven on earth. So sophistocated, cool, and gentle.
I eagerly await their next release. 5 million stars.
absolutely amazing...........2006-01-16
So much to say about this wonderful recording. As I write this, there are 27 reviews posted for Casa and not one of them is less than 4 stars, with the vast majority as 5 stars. That speaks volumes in itself. But the quality of the words and the thought behind them is truly a tribute to Jobim. If we were all lucky enough to have him with us now, the words of these reviews would surely either make him smile or bring tears of joy to his eyes. This truly is music that soothes...reflects...and makes us all appreciate either finding it or being introduced to it by someone. Introduce only your best friends to this, those that would appreciate it as much as you and I do.

Customer Reviews:
These Girls Rock.......2007-01-08
After waiting a month, I received Tribute to Wang Luo Bin:Live yesterday and I've been listening/watching most of the time since. Consistent with their previous releases, Tribute is a fabulous albumn showcasing their unique style of East/West music. I have purchased all of the Twelve Girls Band's previous releases and can state emphatically that Tribute every bit as enjoyable (if not more) than my former favorites (Dunhuang/Romantic Energy and Shining Energy). What sets this CD/DVD apart from several of their earlier releases is a greater emphasis on rhythym. The faster pace and rhythym of the majority of songs keep the Girls (and you) groovin' throughout the CD/DVD. In fact, this CD rocks more than any previous Twelve Girls CD and I just know you're gonna love it. Unlike previous CDs, the Girls do some singing on a couple of songs (not just "la-laing"). Although I cannot interpret, their voices are lovely and add to the listening experience. Only one of the tracks on this CD has appeared in their catalogue before and all 14 tracks are wonderful.
Along with the CD, this release came with a DVD that I could play with my US equipment. Previous releases have provided a concert VCD that I could view on my computer but I have been unable to play the previous DVDs except for Eastern Energy which contained just a few short videos. The Tribute DVD contains live concert footage of each song and the quality of the DVD is excellant - higher than that of any Twelve Girls video release I've seen previously. The Girls look lovely as always and are supported on several of the songs by female and/or male dancers in elaborate costumes. The DVD is a treat to watch and a must-see for all Twelve Girls Band fans.
In sum, the music is just fantastic and the quality of the CD/DVD package makes it more than worth the purchase price. Yes, I had to wait a bit for it to arrive as it's an import, but it's an incredible set that I think you will enjoy vastly. I simply can find no faults with it whatsoever. So what are you waiting for? The sooner you order the sooner you can start looking/listening to this fabulous new Twelve Grirls Band release. Enjoy!

If you just couldn't get enough of The Anthology of American Folk Music, here's the perfect companion CD. The Anthology is, of course, the celebrated 1997 reissued six-disc box that became the touchstone for modern folk music when it was originally put out by filmmaker and record collector Harry Smith in 1952. The Harry Smith Connection is culled from two October 1997 concerts at which performers tackled tracks from The Anthology, which consists of 84 recordings made between 1926 and 1933. Contributors include Roger McGuinn (backed by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett and sounding great), Dave Van Ronk, Ethel Caffie-Austin, and the New Lost City Ramblers. The affection the performers feel for these earthen songs is palpable. The songs themselves are unassailable. --Steven Stolder
Album Description
Powerful new interpretations of Southern musical traditions, recorded live in October, 1997, at the Barns of Wolf Trap. These contemporary versions of songs that either appeared on the Grammy-Award winning Anthology of American Folk Music or are associated with its compiler, Harry Smith (tracks 9 and 19), are a wild mix of styles from "gangsta folk" to gospel, blues, Cajun, country rock, jug band, and more. A stellar group of musicians pays tribute to the past and dramatically demonstrates the enduring vitality of America's traditional music. Extensive notes, discographies, and photographs. Produced by Pete Reiniger, Jeff Place and Bob Santelli, annotated by Jeff Place and Bob Santelli.
Customer Reviews:
A labor of love.......2000-09-28
These live recordings of songs from the AAFM offers warm, loving renditions of a handful of the armload of American musical heritage sent through the years to us by Harry Smith. It's yet another reminder of how important Smith's contribution was. Peter Stampfel's ode to Harry makes me want to hear the rest of the epic and "Nothing" by the Fugs is nothing short of wonderful.
Not enough Roger McGuinn.......1998-08-29
Roger McGuinn is the shinning light of this CD. There should be more selections by him offered in this collection.

Fellow songwriters shower their love on Billy Joe Shaver throughout this concert recording from his 65th birthday bash in Austin. Whereas tribute albums typically feature a variety of performers interpreting the honoree's material, here, many of the Texas troubadours choose to play their own songs influenced by Shaver or ones the rough-hewn renegade specifically requested for the occasion. The birthday boy proves his own best interpreter, opening the album with a hard-charging rendition of "Georgia on a Fast Train" and closing with the raucous resilience of "Try and Try Again" (in which he deals with the death of his wife and his son) and the soulful transcendence of "Tramp on Your Street." The between-song patter highlights the proceedings, with the respect Shaver receives from peers such as Guy Clark and Jimmie Dale Gilmore (who brings tremulous heartbreak to Shaver's "Hearts-a-Bustin'") equaling the awe he elicits from younger troubadours such as Todd Snider and Jack Ingram. As Joe Ely suggests, no one has found "a way of combining the spiritual and the honky-tonk" quite like Billy Joe. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Must have for Billy Joe Shaver fans........2006-11-05
This is an excellent collection of Billy Joe's wonderful musical work done by him and some of his fans who happen to be outstanding performers in their own right. If you are not a Billy Joe Shaver fan, just listen and you will be.
A fitting tribute.......2005-12-01
I was there that night. The love for the man permeated the theater. Billy Joe has seen his share of hard times, but his faith in Jesus (even in these times when that seems to be a politically incorrect thing to say)and the love of his admiring fellow songwriters has gotten him through. The night after his son, Eddie, died (as Todd Snider, dropping his usual ironic stance so eloquently sings about in Waco Moon), Billy Joe was scheduled to play New Years Eve at Poodie's, a honky-tonk in Spicewood, Texas. Billy Joe was, understandably, devastated. His friend, Willie Nelson, himself a Spicewood resident, got Billy Joe on stage and the two just played songs for each other until three in the morning. No dry eyes in the house.
I tell you all of that to give you a littel backgrond on Waco Moon and to give you an idea on how highly Billy Joe is held as a Texas institution.
At the birthday celebration, stars and soon-to-be stars stood in line to sing Billy Joe's praises. It was one of the great musical nights of my life, and for those who missed it, at least you can get a feel for it through this excellent CD.
Kinky Friedman, who is running for Governor of Texas (and might win like a wrestler from Minnesota did, surprising everyone) has said that the day after his inauguration, he will install Billy Joe as the poet laureate of Texas. Listen to this CD, and you'll get an idea why.
Billy Joe will, indeed, Live Forever.
10 stars if I could.......2005-08-04
Great, such a tribute for such a poet. There are none better than Billy Joe.
A Tribute to Billy Joe is one of the best CDs out there.......2005-06-02
I cannot take this CD out of my player. I love the stories that Todd Snider, Jack Ingram, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen and all the others tell about their songwriting hero, Billy Joe Shaver. And the songs are incredible! I highly recommend this album!

Derek Bell (1935-2002), the Chieftains' longtime harpist, was a former child prodigy who mastered the piano, several woodwinds and even the cimbalom, which he played on Maurice Jarre's soundtrack to Doctor Zhivago. He was already a noted classical composer and multi-instrumentalist by the time he picked up the harp in mid-life, but it soon consumed him. After meeting Paddy Moloney in 1972, he sat in on the Chieftains 4, still one of the group's finest albums. His unexpected death left surviving band-mates bereft but typically, they decided to celebrate his life with the music he loved so dearly. Drawn from two memorial concerts which were aired on Irish radio, the selections exemplify the Chieftains' twin doctrines of Celtic authenticity and global inclusion. But after the joy and remembrance, Triona Marshal, alone with her harp, plays the Farewell To Music. There could not have been a dry eye in the house. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Good CD - Horrible Copy Protection.......2006-01-20
I bought this CD while I was at a Chieftans concert last night. I listened to it in my car first, so I didn't notice a problem. I really enjoyed the CD and wanted to listen to it with headphones at my desk with my computer. I stuck the CD in my computer and it starts trying to download and install the copy protection software. Well of course all of the security software on my computer went crazy thinking I had some sort of virus. I had to completely turn off all of my security on my computer to even get the CD to play on my computer. Then after copying the files to my computer to listen in windows media player, I unistalled the software it downloaded. This made my media player crash when I tried to play the files. Great CD, but the copy protection needs to be executed in a better fasion. I'm not really happy with having to turn off all of my security on my computer just to listen to a CD - especially when I'm on a high speed LAN connection.
Dust collector.......2005-03-30
Musically this is probably an ok CD - I say probably because as others have said it is so hard to listen to this CD it is going to gather a lot of dust. A waste of money and one I shall not repeat. .
corrupted CD.......2005-03-19
I purchased the Live from Dublin CD and much to my dismay my computer tells me the CD is corrupted. If go through some trouble you can propably get the thing to play on your computer but will probable not be allowed to listen to it on an mp3 player I am required to install spyware on my computer? I gave up and am returning the album. I am sure the music is great but it is a bit to restictive for me. They cannot trust me but I must trust them to access the music and then on only some of my players?
Sincerely Jim Meehan
Missing Derek Bell.......2005-03-04
This is a fitting tribute to Derek Bell, the "lovliest old rogue" of the Chieftains. On some selections, the sound is "thin" because his harp work is gone. That is a poignant
inclusion and I appreciate it.
Touching tribute.......2005-02-23
As a fan of the group, I have been lucky to see Derek Bell live in concert. This album is a very touching tribute to him. What better way to celebrate than with the music he enjoyed playing.
There is one warning about this CD, and it's not the music - it's with the copy protection. This CD uses the new MediaMax. You can NOT rip this CD to your hard drive. You can copy the tracks to your hard drive, but ONLY as 128kb/s WMA since the WMAs have secure DRM. If you are MAC or iPod user you are out of luck. Hopefully iTunes will carry the album with it's own DRM.

Enjoyable .......2006-02-02
I liked this album myself. My favorite tracks being Gillian Welch's In Tall Buildings and Tim O'Brien;s More Love. This really isn't a John Hartford album, but rather a tribute to him There are a few great numbers by him however that are wonderful and amusing in a dark humor sort of way.
A heartfelt tribute...............but a mediocre album.......2001-12-27
I've loved John Hartford's music for years, and was very happy that a tribute had taken place and was preserved for posterity. But I found the disc that resulted disappointing. The breadth and depth of Hartford's music calls for a towering tribute. Unfortunately, this isn't it.
There are some bright spots .... Riders in the Sky doing "Billy the Kid," Gillian Welch's wonderful rendition of "In Tall Buildings," and, of course, the pieces Hartford does with his string band (especially "Watching the River Go By").
But the great parts are weighed down with, for example, John Cowan's overwrought "Dark as a Dungeon" and the Jamie Hartford Band's run-of-the mill country rock -- pleasant, but nothing to write home about.
I'm glad I got this album -- it rounds out my collection, and Hartford's "goodbye" on the last track is priceless. But this one is for fanatics like me only. For a better introduction to his later music, try "Live at College Station, Pennsylvania" or "Good Old Boys."
Goodbye John...........2001-07-29
I'm a huge fan of John Hartford's and have been since I saw him live in Austin many, many years ago. Those who gathered together to play John's music were better musicians than I, but not necessarily bigger fans! In any event, this is not the album to get as an introduction to John -- Aereo-Plain, Live on Mountain Stage or Good Old Boys are far better for that.
The performances are all wonderful here, but what comes through is the emotional energy that runs through it. John was dying of cancer - everybody knew it and he knew everybody knew it -- and his appearance on the final few songs is tough to get through. His fiddle wobbles here and there and his voice is touched by the medication and treatment he'd been through. For those of us who knew his voice, you can hear death's whisperings going on in there and it's disturbing to listen to. What saves it? The very last short speech and song that John gives.
This was recorded a full 9 months before his death, as I understand it, and I've given it a 3 because I want to stress this isn't an introduction, but an emotional experience that, when seen within the body of his work, shows what American music has lost.

More Than I Expected.......2007-01-10
I picked up a copy of this at my Best Buy yesterday and I thought, is this a joke? So, I bought it thinking whats the worst, if I don't like it I'll sell it on ebay. When I got home, I popped it into my stereo and couldn't believe it. The songs were sick! I especially loved Spoonman and I Am the Highway. Its like wedding music if you want to add a little edge to when someone walks down the aisle. At my brothers wedding this past Sunday (this isn't a lie) I walked down to Boulevard of Broken Dreams (I'm 16 what can I say? I thought it'd be cool) The orchestra played the song on trumpets and violins and it sounded awesome!! If I couldve been given another chance to pick a song, it'd be a heavy debate between Blvd. and I am the Highway. Anyway, if you like rock, and you would like to hear how Audioslave or Soundgarden wouldve turned out had Tom Morello or Kim Thayil played violin instead of guitars, this album is definitly for you. If your just a fan of the two bands and think itd be cool to hear the two bands played through different (and really cool sounding) instruments, definitly pick this up.
Not For Your Average Rock Fan.......2006-10-07
In looking at other reviews, I can only wonder how big of fans of Audioslave these people are. I mean, I first heard "What You Are" and I fell in love with the band. That being said, if you buy this expecting to hear the same sound, then you need to re-read the title of the CD: "The STRING QUARTET Tribute to Audioslave". This is not for your average rock fan. This is for the people who love Audioslave and Soundgarden (no RATM songs here, though it would have been very interesting if they tried to pull one off) and can appreciate this kind of music. People need to keep in mind that this is not Audioslave nor Soundgarden playing these songs. It's violins and cellos and such. End rant.
Now that that's out of the way, I can say, as a HUGE fan of Audioslave that I love this CD. Sometimes it's good to listen to music that's a little more mellow, music that doesn't involve banging drums and wailing guitars. So if you love Audioslave and Soundgarden and want some music to unwind to, this might be for you. But to avoid reviews like those before this one, I would HIGHLY SUGGEST previewing the music first. (Whodathunkit?!) I did and I liked what I heard.
I listen to music when I do homework; it's become almost necessary for me. I can't concentrate 100% if it's something I can bang my head to, so I usually pick out some slower, softer songs to help me get through the work. I see this as the best of both worlds. I can listen to softer music and be reminded of how much I love this band.
This tribute, however, is not perfect (despite that I've given it five stars). I just think there are some songs that could have been done better. While some of the bands' more popular songs ("Like a Stone", "Black Hole Sun") are pulled off excellently, some others just sound... a little off. Nevertheless, it's still well-played.
Again, for the true fans only.
What Did I Miss?.......2005-03-28
I read some of the other reviews here and I do not understand where these losers are getting their information.... It ain't from listening to this CD ... That's for damn sure!!! I bought this CD, even though I thought it was going to SUCK based on the reviews here... Well ... It definately doesn't suck... It isn't bad ... & guess what .... I F*&KIn' LOVE IT!!! I think it totally rocks!!! Matt Cameron would LOVE this CD!!!
Don't listen to the reviewers who say this sucks because it DEFINATELY does not suck!!!
I swear to God that I was going to throw this thing in the trash based on what I read here and after I listened to it I ain't throwing nothing away... I love it and you will too.
I don't think that Geoffrey Holtby, Alan Karna "Trashman Al", or Brian P. Harris "Da_VooDooChild" even listened to the CD. I think they are gay or they are deaf idiots with no brains whatsoever.
What a disgrace!!!.......2005-01-29
I gave it a chance but I couldn't even finish the CD, it was so godawful. The only saving grace to this CD was that this so-called "classical" take on good rock and roll was almost humorous. Like the retarded renditions of pop songs, that some sketch comedies use, in order to poke a little fun at pop culture.
Pure shlock that is not as advertised... I'm talking MIDI.......2004-11-25
A while back, I picked up the String Quartet tribute to Evanescense. I didn't think it was the greatest CD ever, but I thought it was pretty good. I'm into stuff like that, so when I saw the "string quartet" tribute to Audioslave, I decided to pick it up.
Wow, was that a mistake! I mean, there's plenty of bad CDs out there that I've bought in the past... but I've never written to the people behind it before...this time I did! Other bad CDs were at least as advertised. But HOW can you call it a "String Quartet" tribut when there ISN'T A STRING QUARTET involved???
That's right people, this installment of the "string quartet" tributes does not even HAVE a STRING QUARTET!!!!!!!! Wheter you like audioslave, soundgarden, classical music, or any of the above, this album is a TRAVESTY.
This album consists of one guy with some crappy looped MIDI music (albeit wavetable), and another guy with a violin playing over it!!!!! Not only is the music crappy, but it's false advertising! DON'T BUY THIS ALBUM!!! DON'T PAY FOR MIDI MUSIC!!! Vitamin records is trying to make a quick buck off this one.
I don't know how anyone could think this is good. If you think this is anything close to classical music, you're sadly mistaken. Thanks to this album, I will make sure to NEVER pick up another string quartet album again. You would be much better off to pick up some Apocalyptica.

Of the four musicians presented here, saxophonist George Coleman is the least represented on record with the great Miles Davis. But he's swinging here like he wants to play catch-up on this straight-ahead set recorded in a studio with an audience. The concept is as sound as the music, but don't expect any fusion-like explosions from guitarist Mike Stern, who joined Miles in the early '80s. The guitarist doesn't sacrifice the essence of his "dirty" sound; it's just that he's much more in the tradition than he ever was during his tenure with Miles. Stern and bassist Ron Carter do reach back into Miles's In a Silent Way prefusion era on a haunting version of "Blue in Green," circling and darting around the slow meter while Coleman rains down a Coltrane-like sheet of sound. Jimmy Cobb, one of the trumpeter's more subtle drummers, continuously makes sure his voice is heard throughout this nine-song set without ever getting in the way, just as he did with Miles in the late '50s and early '60s. This is really Coleman's record though, with Stern delivering some excellent solos, particularly on Carter's "81." This obviously heartfelt tribute finds the quartet completely on their game, and with Coleman's tasteful, underrated saxophone style leading the way. --Mark Ruffin

Stern and Coleman in great form !.......2003-07-29
I don't accord with robert o'neill. Mike Stern & George Coleman are fantastic in this record ! A nice tribute.
overall disapointment.......2003-01-26
i bought this cd with great anticipation, but it was a major letdown. coleman is a monster, but in his effort to sound like miles'trumpet, he is out of tune and way outside the changes. stern offers gorgeous solos but the phaser/flanger that he employs on his telecaster sounds awful. his tone is terrible. jimmy cobb dissapears in the background and the bassist tries to hold this session together with some succcess. overall, this gig stunk, and the cd will gather some dust.
overall dissapointment.......2003-01-26
i bought this cd with alot of anticipation, but it is a serious letdown. the quartet sounds out of whack and the sax is hopelessly out of tune. coleman is a monster but in his effort to sound like a miles trumpet is hard to digest. the great jimmy cobb is lost in the background, and mike stern's tone(he plays his telecaster with a lousy phaser effect) absolutly stunk. i was shocked. stern has some good moments but the horrible flanger/phaser tone ruins his efforts. the bassist tries to hold this gig together with some success. this one will gather some dust.
a pleasant surprise.......2003-01-17
miles davis had a career that practically spanned the entirety of jazz in the 20th century, debuting in the bebop era (40s) and playing through his death in the 90s. along the way, he was a pioneer in developing the sound of jazz, setting the standard for cool jazz, then modalism, then launching fusion. the four players gathered here, george coleman (tenor), mike stern (guitar), ron carter (bass), and jimmy cobb (drums) were all part of major bands in davis' storied career, albeit save for stern, they were generally present in the 60s--cobb was on "kind of blue"; coleman was on "four and more-live at lincoln center"; carter was part of the great 60s quintet, and mike stern part of the later fusion bands.
the music here comes mostly from the "kind of blue" era, meaning fans of stern's fiery solos may be disappointed as he tones things down--he still plays beautifully, however. the star is george coleman, though. this underrated tenor player swings with abandon and completely captures the listener. coleman is always something of a surprise, leaving you wondering why no one has much noticed him over the years.
highlights are "green dolphin street" and the burning "oleo". this is an all-star session that cooks.

Adam Again's Last Concert & Greg Lawless' Solo Project.......2006-02-12
A worthy document of a timeless night, this 2000 Cornerstone performance was an opporunity for Gene's band and friends to celebrate his music one final time. As a one-take live show for a large festival audience there are some flaws as the mix gets settled in the first song or two and with mikd feedback through that same stretch (another poignant reminder since Gene's last show at Cornerstone - '97 - also had somewhat the same issues, though sadly the mix never got right that night).
This is an interesting show warts and all, that reminds one of how unique a genius Gene really was since as hard as some of the best try they can't quite render Gene's songs as tellingly as he did. There are still some gorgeous moments with Sim Wilson's take on Don't Cry the highlight, though Mike Roe also left his heart out there. A very emotional night for all involved and one I treasure being there for. Gene's music remains to be enjoyed and his impact is still felt. Everything he did is astounding, so give them a listen. You won't be disappointed.
The second CD of this set is Greg Lawless' solo project (Prayers and Lowsongs), which was originally an ultra-limited Cornerstone special release. Well worth hearing and quite different than his work with Adam Again.

KEITH STILL HAS A LOCK ON OUR HEARTS.......2003-01-06
Everything old is new again. Or perhaps that's what the marketing big-wigs at RCA were thinking when they decided that latest CD by Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra should simply be a "greatest hits" package -- selections culled from Lockhart's five previously released CDs. It's a gimmick that works, since those tracks chosen are truly the best of the best: "Riverdance" and "Magh Scola" from the Grammy-nominated "The Celtic Album;" "Sleigh Ride" and "Farandole" from "Holiday Pops;" "The Stars and Stripes Forever" from "A Splash of Pops." To add a bit of freshness, the closes with "Long Live the King!" a medley of Presley tunes recorded love at Boston's Symphony Hall for a PBS special. No wonder he can't help falling in love -- once again -- with the man who keeps a lock on our hearts.
The Boston Pops at Their Best!!.......2001-07-14
This has got to be the best orchestral CD I have ever purchased! My intent for buying the CD was not because of the Pops themselves (I wasn't very familiar with them or Keith Lockhart at the time), but my orchestra had played two of the songs on the CD so I thought it would have been neat to have a professional recording of them. A couple months later, here I am, I know how each one of the songs go, it never leaves my CD player unless I go somewhere (it goes too) and let me tell you Mr. Lockhart is a hottie- whether he knows it or not! Only because of this Cd, (and watching Pops Goes the Fourth) I have bought every other Boston Pops CD conducted by Keith Lockhart. They are outstanding musicians and this is the best "greatest hits so far" CD. It has pretty much 2 songs from each past CD- Tracks 1 and 4 from Runnin' Wild; Tracks 2 and 5 from The Celtic Album; Tracks 3 and 8 from American Visions; Tracks 6 and 9 from Holiday Pops; and tracks 7 and 10 from A Splash of Pops. Track 11 is Keith's introduction to Long Live the King and Track 12 is, obviously, Long Live the King-A Tribute to Elvis which has never been released before. And it's pretty sad I knew all of that without having to look at the CD case, huh? That just shows you how well put together this CD is, with a mix of everything for everyone. From the slow, beautiful "Magh Scola" ("The Level Plain") to "American Patrol" back to "A Hymn to New England" (written by former Boston Pops conductor and composer to just about every famous movie their is John Williams) and of course, their trademark "Stars and Stripes Forever", this CD is perfect for anyone with a love of classical music, or the Boston Pops Orchestra. And their tuba player better watch out- I am definetly going to replace him soon :)
The Best of the Best.......2000-07-26
Keith Lockhart does it again. All of America's favorites on one album plus a tribute to the King. It goes to show what a wonderful and masterful conductor Keith is and what a great orchestra the BSO is. Their finest album with Keith thus far. He truly is one of the best conductors in the business. I highly recommend this to everyone who loves the spirit of the Pops. It's superb all around.
Best of the Boston Pops.......2000-06-25
This is a wonderful repertoire of the kind of music played by the Boston Pop. It's for all ages. If anyone wants one CD that is representative of the Boston Pop Orchestra, this is it! Kudos to Keith Lockhart for including a medley by the King. This is my favorite Boston Pop CD next to "Runnin Wild" and the "Holiday at PoPs".
6th CD!.......2000-04-25
I went home this weekend and look what I picked up! The 6th ablum by Mr. Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops! Great CD, love the music selections that Keith made to put in this one and I loved the Long Live the King! A Slaute to Elvis. You haven't heard anything until you have heard a full orchestra play Elvis Presley music. Number six, and it was great! My favorite piece is DoddleTOWN Fifers, or whatever it is called. The MCV (Middlesex County Vouleenters) are great, and I'm not just saying that because I know Earl, the Music Master for the group, they are good.
