The audio samples given here are from the Vivaldi for Valentines CD in this same Philips series. NOT Bach.

5 out of 5 stars Bubble Bath Baroque.......2005-09-27

Light some candles, run a bubble bath, put in bath beads, pop this CD into your stereo and indulge in a bath that would mean you've pampered yourself in extremis. This particular recording from the popular Set Your Life To Classical series is a real treat for Bathtime, or in my opinion, anytime. It is indeed, as the title suggests, a relaxing serenade to wash your cares away. It is therapy, a perfect companion to a massage, reading a book, drinking tea, anything you can do alone to pamper yourself and to relax. Iona Brown, a female conductor, takes Sir Neville Marriner's place and conducts the Academy of St Martin In The Fields performing such works as the opening track - the Lute Concerto by Vivaldi as well as Track 4's Largo from the Winter movement in The Four Seasons, track 12's Concerto For Two Guitars by Corelli and the Oboe Concerto in D by Telemann. Also featured on here Oboe Concerti by Handel and Water Music Suite, and other conductors featured on here are Raymond Leppard and his English Chamber Orchestra. The Canon in D has never sounded more radiant than on here as it is conducted by Sir Neville Marriner and closes the CD nicely. A more relaxing way to take a bath you'll be hard-pressed to find. This music is gorgeous, it's affordable (on the Used Item section and the regular price) and is as always, a great intro to classical music and a fun, innovative way to enjoy it.

This is pleasing, pastoral music picked to relieve that which tenses up our bodies and souls.

Turn on this excellent baroque collection from the likes of Vivaldi, Telemann, Handel and Pachelbel (among others) superbly played by such virtuosos as Rampal, Holliger et al.

Sweeping instrumental arias are so relaxing! This one will soothe the savage beast as well as those tired bods.

5 out of 5 stars Great Classical Music Series Gorgeous Music.......2002-12-22

The cd series "Set Your Life To Classical Music", composes a variety of baroque, classical and romantic instrumental music that serves the purpose of leisure and background while you engage in the day or evening's activities. The purpose is therapeutic. There are other titles in the series, such as "Bach For Breakfast", "Beethoven For Book Lovers" "Chopin And Champagne", "Baroque For Bedtime", "Puccini and Pasta", "Mozart For The Morning Commute", the series goes on and on. It is a great way to soothe your tensions and provides stress-free, nearly New Age style music that you'd more than likely hear at a masseur's place of business. One can also make the argument that this is the music you'd hear at an elevator. What I like about all these series is that they are also a great introduction to instrumental/classical music. The ensembles performing the classical works are virtuosic and well known in world of classical performance, such as Sir Neville Marriner and St. Martin In The Fields, I Musici and the New Age, Yani-style musician, Zamfir, who specializes in rare instruments such as pan pipes.

On this recording, specifically designed to accompany your bubble bath, there are beautiful, slower-paced movements from Baroque flute, violin and oboe concertos. There are the Sicilian style movements of such composers as Vivaldi, Bach and Telemann. The largo from the Winter movement is a richly melodic and dreamy piece for strings, and the concluding work, Canon In D Major, is an elegant, graceful and heartfelt chamber piece that has become iconic in Baroque music. It was used in the film, Ordinary People and is very popular in classical music for weddings. I strongly recommend all the cds in the series. They are a perfect way to get you into some of the most beautiful classical music ever written, and are a great way to involve music as the wordless, instrumental soundtrack in your life.

This is a wonderful collection of Baroque pieces that will truly relax and wash away stress and tension. I especially like the oboe and classical guitar pieces. If you are a fan of the pan flute, this is also a good CD for you, but the pan flute actually is the down side of the CD for me. All the songs are first rate!

A beautiful and contemplative solo guitar recording of hymns, spirituals and other sacred works such as Mozart's Laudate Dominum and Humperdinck's Evening Prayer. Parkening is in exceptional form, the transcriptions are superb, and the recording itself is of the highest quality. Little wonder this has been an enduring classic since its release in the early 1980s.

Christopher Parkening is the most musically inventive person playing the classical guitar today; you must purchase this CD if you haven't already. It contains exquisitely beautiful hymns & sacred music (arranged perfectly for guitar, I might add) along with Mr. Parkenings masterful transcriptions of works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Humperdinck.

Above all, this is music that glorifies God and that was the ultimate purpose of creating this CD.

Classsical guitar is among the top forms of music and Christopher Parkeniong is one of the greatestartists in this genre, if not the best. I had despaired at ever findinding the CD "Simple Pleasures" and was so very pleased to locate it . I am so enjoying it now. I will be back for more as funds permit.

This was one of the first CD's I purchased back in 1988, and I bought it on a whim. Of the hundreds of CD's I now own, including many genres, this one remains in my list of top 10 favorites for a number of reasons.

1. Mr. Parkening plays every song on it with remarkable technical excellence and clearly discernible passion.
2. It includes classical, folksy, and reflective material, which could create a rough flow, but Mr. Parkening moves deftly from mood to mood leaving the listener with a sense of seamless transitions.
3. Although the songs on it are all religious classics they are played without pretense, which makes it accessible to any listener and uplifting for those seeking spiritual refreshment.

In closing, the is one thing "wrong" with this CD is it's too short!

This treasure chest holds such jewels! The cd rushes in with the joyous energy of Bach's Praludium, allows you to reflect and catch your breath on Pritchard's Hyfrydol and Variation, and flows forward with the grace and underlying passion that makes this a precious favorite.

This is one of my favorite CDs ever. I don't know much about classical music to know if this should be considered very good in classical music circles, but I know what I like hearing. It's amazing.

This is a great CD, the playing is virtuosic and it's technically quite good. The slow tracks are also done skillfully with lots of variety in sound and interesting glissandos. I recommend it highly for classical and non-classical musicians alike- it's fun to listen to and the ensemble is pretty tight. Some of the folk tunes are so fast and with such a great beat it's hard to sit still while listening to this recording!

    4 out of 5 stars Frothy but still solid music.......2003-06-14

    Those of you who have heard The Prince's Toys may be disappointed or pleased that most of these works are frothy and tongue-in-cheek. I loved everything on Koshkin's first album because the Stravinsky and Shostakovich influences are so up-front. On this CD Koshkin plays with a lighter, happier mood and with more popular and folk idioms.

    The Elves Suite has enough sardonic dissonance in it to resemble the more famous Usher Waltz, and Koshkin's jazzier pieces like Parade and 3 Stations on One Road have plenty of verve. The Ballads came off as too twee for me at first but I've found even this work has grown on me. I prefer Koshkin's fast and lively performance over Elena Papendreou's still good but not as gripping performance. You can sense listening to this album that Koshkin once wanted to play guitar in a rock band.

    Overall the performances for all the pieces are great. Like the first CD Koonce and Koshkin worked on together these are works other classical guitarists ahven't recorded (excepting Elena Papandreou's recent disk, which I haven't been able to hear yet). So if you have any interest in Koshkin's music at all you should get this. Even though I prefer Koshkin's darker stuff there's still a lot of worthy music here.

    With one female and two male lead singers, Almost Live, is a vibrant compilation of Americana: Folk-Rock, Grass Roots and Country. The eleven songs (nine original, 2 covers) were recorded in an astounding 5 days, deep in the beautiful green Hocking Hills of Ohio, the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The bands acoustic guitars and vocal stylings are reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, Nash &Young and The Eagles, but with the contemporary vibe of Nickel Creek.

    A tasteful, beautiful record, crafting pretty country with great acoustic guitars. The guys (and one gal) in RC are purposely harkening back to the music of their youth (see the folk-pop covers from Poco and Stevie Nicks) with all the easy going charm that that implies. Some slightly unconventional Bluegrass chord progressions combined with some of the loveliest harmonies you'll ever hear make this a CD no one could dislike. Its arrangements and production are skilled, imaginative and impressive.

    I found RC's female singer in another band on Amazon, Drawing Down the Moon, whose CD "Angel in My Dream" is at the opposite end of the musical spectrum---Goddess Rock! Now THAT'S musical chops!

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous guitar interplay, great songs........2005-04-27

    I was fortunate enough to see this trio play live during their stint at the Jazz Standard in NYC promoting this album (which I bought at the show), and I was blown away. Any of these players could stand on their own, but as a group it places them in a unique dimension as performers. Not only are the solos and interplay by and among the guitarists great, but the three-guitar arrangements on some of the pieces sound great, as they move from harmonized parts to unison parts to heavy chordal parts. Even when they really free up the structure, as in the end of 'Metamorphosis,' the interaction is fabulously well-measured. As for the compositions, this disc provides a great mix of works from each member. Coryell's 'New Lute Prelude' and 'Exercise in Fourths' are both great intricate pieces that were definitely written for guitar. Abercrombie's pieces (which are all songs he has played in other settings) all have a very airy impressionistic feel. 'Soundtrack' especially sounds great in this setting (almost equal in beauty to the version on Abercrombie's 'Cat and Mouse' session). Both his and Coryell's solos on this sound fabulous, considering how difficult Abercrombie's songs are to improvise over. I'm surprised at all of the complaints that this disc is getting. I think that the sound quality is fabulous, even with Assad's nylon string guitar. I also think that the inclusion of Assad's new agey Brazilian style is a fresh addition to these guys, who are usually found playing in more typical settings. Assad's percussion and singing is also very flavorful. When I saw them live, she did a mouth/throat percussion solo that blew my mind. Not only is the act itself difficult, but she knew how to improvise with it in perfect rhythm. All in all, this record is a great example of three great guitar players blending their diverse styles to create a fabulous amalgamation.

    Didn't know what to expect when I picked up this CD. I was quite familiar with Larry Coryell and John Abercrombie, but knew nothing about Badi Assad. Larry and John deliver as expected, but its Badi who gives this session unique sounds and seasonings. Her vocalizing and "percussion" comes out of nowhere, and fits right in. Reminds me a bit of the sound Chick Corea had with Flora Purim and Airto. And her nylon-string guitar adds a color you don't find in your typical two-guitar jazz album.

    While not all the tunes are masterpieces, there's a plenty of variety and fresh musical ideas. If you're looking for an album that's about blazing guitar pyrotechnics, then this probably isn't for you. Instead, this one is full of tasteful, expressive musicianship and an easy, sensistive interplay, yet with a generous dose of chops. This ain't "smooth jazz" by any means, but rather the creative effort of true artists.

    The recording is clean and clear, with a real "you are there" feeling. I've been listening to this one over and over...

    Not everything works perfectly on this outing. There is a little culture-clash here and there. The ones that do work are quite good, however. It is especially nice to hear the mostly electric John Abercrombie again dust off his acoustic and a couple of his better compositions. Ralph's Piano Waltz and Timeless are two of his best, and both sound quite good here.
    I agree that Badi's guitar doesn't sound as good as the others, but her playing is very good. Larry always plays well and certainly does on this recording. The overall feel to the record is much more low-key than I anticipated. A good effort overall. Looking forward to the next...

    I bought this CD because I love the sound of the guitar- and the sound quality of this disk is great as expected for a Chesky recording. However, I just cannot enjoy music with the New Age / Avant Garde elements that Badi Assad adds to the tracks. Making popping sounds with her mouth, for example, ruins the music for me. If you are looking for CLASSIC or CLASSICAL guitar, this disk will disappoint you. There are a couple of tracks that are more traditional, but maybe not enough to justify buying the whole disk. On the other hand, if you appreciate avant garde innovations, then you might enjoy this CD more than I have.

    I hate to disagree with the other two reviewers, but they played little role in my decision to buy this disk. As a fan of Larry Coryell's acoustic music -- I saw him twice in Washington DC in the early 1980s -- the prospect of a recording featuring him with a talented relative newcomer Badi Assad, along with a well-respected fusion innovator in his own right, John Ambercombie, plus Chesky's usually unparalleled recording quality was too much to resist. However, this disk fails to exhibit much passion, primarily due to a mismatch between the skills of the three individuals. Coryell's blues-inspired string bending is strangely out of place in Brazilian music, nor does it match well with the vocalizations of Assad because of the resulting mismatch in pitches. The rhythm flags and is out of sync, the American guitar players not being familiar with Brazilian rhythms. Finally, despite this being a Chesky disk, the recorded sound of Assad's nylon-strung Fisher guitar matches poorly with the two steel-string guitars, sounding wooden and thunky. I was disappointed, too, in the tiny, poorly done photo fragments.
