One of the best Pres albums.......2005-02-11
This is one of the best later-Pres albums out there. People who say that the Pres of the 50's was just a shell of the Pres of the 30's and early 40's with Basie are proven wrong by this recording and many others. Pres has rarely sounded better and the fire that he plays with on "Gigantic Blues" and the soul that he puts into songs like "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" is simply awesome.
This is Pres at his best. Highly recommended.
The best Jazz album ever made.......2004-08-20
This is simply the best jazz album ever made..
If you dig the style of Lester in the best shape since 1943 and add the unsurpassed efforts by Vic Dicenson, Roy Eldridge, Teddy Wilson and Jo Jones. Besides Lester the group plays the best they ever did. Wilson has never svung as hard, Roy has never been so precise and hard svung "in control" as here. You will never hear harder swing as in Gigantic Blues or as beautifull and hartbreaking as I didn't know what time is was.
If I only had one album this would be it..
Wonderful and Perfect.......2004-02-17
There are not many cuts on this CD, but this is worth it. It is a rare occaision, a group of contest winners, who happen to jibe together as a real functing band who work well together because their past experience of working together and current styles mesh. They create some great music like a band that had practiced together for years.
About 20 years ago a friend of mine found the LP version of this in a thrift store in Los Angeles. When I visited and he played the opening selection I think I'm going to Change My plans, it was one of the most beautiful tasteful and wonderful things I have ever heard. I still go by that. There is something magnificent about that cut that makes me wonder why I don't just play it all day every day, something I did do, once I got a CD player about 12 years ago and got this CD. It is that good.
What works here is that Lester is recorded with a set of SWING musicians who have the same approach to time and variation that he had, although Lester is obviously the master here. In fact, this recording was always one that people like Buck Clayton and other Old Testament Basie survivors pointed to as proof that none of Lester's skills had declined in the 1950s, he just needed a rhythm section like the one here composed of Teddy Wilson (with whom he recorded scores of records for Billie Holiday in the 30s, and his former Basie band mates Freddie Greene and Jo Jones and Gene Ramey who is of the same generation of Southwestern Swing as Lester and Basie.
Vic Dickenson really shines here. Smooth and cremey hot and swinging. It is unfortunate that very few people these days understand the greatness of Little Jazz, Mr. Roy Eldrige whose trumpet provides the necessary contrast to Lester's great sax playing. By 1956 Roy had been appearing with Lester and sometimes with Dickenson for years in Jazz at the Philharmonic's great jams. Listening to these cuts will help you want to hear more of him.
Lester, "Pres" for the friends.......2001-08-23
Lester Young. What more can I say ? He was the most incredible jazz player of all times. The king of tenor saxophone. He recorded this session in 1956,three years before his death, with some outstanding companions : Teddy Wilson,Vic Dickenson,Roy Eldridge,Freddie Greene,Gene Ramey and Jo Jones. What a hall of fame!!Just listen to the magnificent version of "I'll guess I'll have to change my plan",a tune rarely recorded. This is some of the greatest Lester, a real masterpiece; for Lester's playing, but also for Teddy Wilson,Jo Jones, and for an amazing Roy Eldridge.I guess you'll play this tune for hours.Roy 's solo on this tune ranks among the greatest things ever done on a trumpet. The four other tunes are very great moments of music too: Lester's improvisations on "I didn't know what time it was" or "this year's kisses",a tune he recorded with Billie Holiday some 20 years before. The Jazz Giants is a good title: noone will ever play that way.
Straight ahead Ballads and Blues w/ seriously mellow groove!.......2000-09-20
You can't go wrong with this CD. With Lester Young, the listener always knows what he/she is getting: soft, silky yet full bodied sax with a heavy groove. It is one of THE classic, late night mellow mood pieces. Many of the songs contain wonderful trumpet and piano solos, adding a truly majestic depth to the music. This is a great place to start a jazz collection; also consider Stan Getz (or Lester Young) with the Oscar Peterson trio. Finally, if you want to get addicted to jazz, please consider the all time classic by Zoot Simms and Joe Pass: "Blues For Two".

America's Ace Drummer Man!.......2004-02-01
This is a fantastic session done for Verve Records in 1956 of Gene with an all-star studio orchestra featuring Roy Eldridge and Anita O'Day. The album recaptures some of Krupa's greatest hits in glorious hi-fi sound. I think drummers suffered the most from the poor recording technology of the thirties and forties, and it is to the credit of producers like Norman Granz that veterans of the Swing Era like Krupa were able to re-record their hits in living stereo sound. This album captures everything that made Krupa a legend. While Krupa had slowed down some by this time due to various health problems, his drums constantly drive the band. Krupa demonstrated that sheer musicianship is more important than technique and speed (a lesson that a lot of drummers never seemed to learn). Nevertheless, the drum breaks during "Drummin' Man" and the blistering solo on "Wire Brush Stomp" are some of the most exciting sounds ever produced on a drum set. Also well-featured in this album are the two biggest stars to have emerged from Krupa's band, Roy Eldridge and Anita O'Day. Their humorous and swinging interplay on "Let Me Off Uptown" is one of the highlights of this set. Also, Roy lights off some fireworks with his rendition of "After You've Gone" (my second favorite version of the song after the one by the original Benny Goodman Trio, complete with Gene Krupa). This album demonstrates the confident brilliance that only comes with maturity, and the fact that no one ever has or will again propel a big band like that drummin' man, Gene Krupa!
lightning strikes and pounding thunder.......1998-12-13
Gene krupa, Roy Eldridge, and Anita O'day come together to produce a masterpiece that has no equal. This album should be timecapsuled to represent what it means to truly swing.

True Trumpet Kings.......2006-09-02
Eldridge's and Gillespie's place among the best trumpet players in the history of jazz was already secured by the time these recordings were made. The hulabaloo around the be-bop revolution had already calmed down and the world of jazz was ready for productive colaboration between two players of different styles; Eldridge being one of the top swing players and Dizzy being the quintessential be-bop player.
Naturally, having Oscar Peterson on the piano (with Herb Ellis, great Ray Brown and powerfull Louis Bellson completing the rhythm section) certainly helped to make the merging of different styles and making this CD a true album, not a JATP jam session (which would also be OK in its own rank).
It is interesting to note how differently the stars of the CD perform different songs; sometimes gentle (Sometimes I'm Happy...), sometimes more competitive and hot (Algo Bueno, Trumpet Blues...). Their joint vocal effort on "Pretty-Eyed Baby" is a sheer joy, the only opportunity I heard both of them coming close to Armstrong's vocal aristry in rhythm.
The son trying to cut down the father.......2003-10-20
The heated cutting contest is one of the trademarks of jazz lore, where best friends can get up on a stage together and instantly become the fiercest rivals. This particular album transplants that dynamic into the studio, but also adds a unique dimension: Eldridge was the father of Gillespie, musically speaking, and by the time this album was recorded Dizzy had already surpassed his mentor as the greatest trumpet player. If Harold Bloom's "anxiety of influence" of literature could be adapted to music, I think "Roy and Diz" would be a nice illustration of it. One of the defining characteristics of the Eldridge style was taking great, big chances...pushing himself and the instrument as far as they'll go and then going even higher. He has been likened to a tightrope walker working without a net who is not afraid of falling. Dizzy took it to the next level simply by walking faster, and falling less often. The two of them together on this record create pure sustained musical swashbuckling, each man pushing the other to his limits and beyond. "Pretty-Eyed Baby" has them singing a duet, then going into a scat-singing cutting session. If these two aren't enough to hold your interest, the Oscar Peterson trio provides rhythm support. Highly recommended.
...like whoa!..........2002-03-27
...dont own anything else by mr. eldridge and i was never a big fan of mr. gillispie, with the exception of 'night in tunisia' as performed by brother parker...
but this sh!t right here is hot!
this is gonna end up in my top ten before it's all said and done...i love it when grown folks get together and prove themselves as masters of their chosen field of study...these boys is showin their ph'd's with this one...coverin a broad spectrum of ideas, from some ol' sof' shoe ballads, to some ol' fasioned bop, to flat out ridiculous...
you pride yourself on bein a jazz purist or dont even like jazz, jus bored and lookin for somethin to do until your serena williams calender stops downloading?
doesnt matter...
sooner or later this is gonna be somethin you didnt e'en know you needed in your collection...but it is...quit playin around...
Circling sharks.......2001-07-06
They both circle and stalk each other, use each other's styles, and general have a good old fashion cutting session. First rate for Diz and, Little Jazz fans.
Supreme Cutting Contest.......2001-04-17
Diz and Roy work together in this album to create a wonderful intermingling of technical mastery, stylistic and harmonic genius. Trumpet Blues is my favorite track. Throughout they mostly stick to harmon and straight mutes and have a great sound. Dizzy's upper octave and Roy's fast fingers make for a real treat for any jazz lover, and trumpet fans especially. A highlight is when Dizzy's mute falls out mid-solo he doesn't miss a beat, just keeps on going!

Customer Reviews:
Essential late swing.......2006-12-24
Since Basie and Eldridge are among my very favorite jazz artists, I may be less than reliable when grading this CD. However, even fans can say when their heros are not on their best level (see some of my earlier rewiews) and this is not the case. They are both great and their interaction with other players is superb.
First of all, it is important to say that, in addition to explosive jamming on "Loose Walk" and Eldridge's "54000 North" (and a tad less succesfully on Ellington's "In a Mellow Tone"), this CD (and the concert it was recorded on) shows the gentle side of its players as well.
For instance, explosive trombonist Al Grey is showcased in that sense on "Makin Whoopee" (although that song is usually used for romping); this is a subtle and very very gentle version. Grey demonstrates the concept of plunger trombone quite fresh and different from more prototypical Ellingtonish versions.
Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis is equally subtle on "If I Had You"; his tone is beautiful and phrasing coherent and logical, and Roy leaves me speechless on "I Surrender, Dear". It always amazes me how easily he incorporates his fierce high notes into the subtlest of improvisations...
At his best behaviour, Eldridge, who can outblow anyone, can be as subtle and sweet as Harry Edison, without loosing the sense of dormant fire in his throat...
And as for the one and only Count... Well, I am inclined to believe the liner notes author who gently suggests this CD as one of his best recorded performance. Just listen the exuberance of his solo on the final romp of the CD, "5400 North", or how he interacts with Roy on "Loose Walk"! But he is a joy to listen throughout this great occasion, equally when he solos and when he feeds the horns with rhythmical cookies... Yes, his rhythmical shadow - Freddie Green on guitar - is also there to ensure that things don't stop swinging like mad.
At the time this was recorded (1972) all of these great artists were still young enough to give their best and although many of them (and others) will continue to record great swing music, I still feel that this CD is essential late example of swing style (although Davis is definitively the most modern soloist in this group)...
A final word: 40 minutes of music may seem too little to some contemporary listeners, but this was recorded and originally edited with LP format on mind. After all, expanded material on many CD reissues, as we all know, often contains nothing but junk; versions discarded for the lack of rhythm or coherence, not for lack of space on the vynil LP record...

Sorry It Is Out Of Print But Get It If You Can circa 1940-1949.......2005-06-10
Swinging music with a great band..The greatness of Gene Krupa's Orchestra with Roy Eldrige intact remains a staple of jazz history as UPTOWN remains one of the defining songs of the genre,, I was able to locate a CD copy consoling myself with Anita O Day's Sony's collection...also a great one..Still, the sound is fine and a real treat of a CD with many tracks obviously not on O'Days collection since this Cd is a composite long playing Cd that spans about 10 years..It is considered a big band classic featuring Krupa and Eldridge, and the gutsy voiced Anita O'Day..there are other tracks with vocalist Delores Hawkins as well and listening to this CD one can hear the greatness of Krupa and this band in particular despite the fiery natures of the major players..
A must for your CD collection.......2004-01-21
It's a measure of the record industry's incompetence in selling its back product that you really have to hunt down Gene Krupa's Columbia/OKeh output, currently divided among four official albums: a set of early Krupas from after the drummer flew the Goodman coop, an album featuring that surpassing chanteuse Anita O'Day, a recent Collectables package of the band's postwar years, and the present CD, head-scratchingly listed in the Sony catalog under Roy Eldridge. This is by far the best, and an absolute must for any music collection. The Krupa band is never less than electrifying, especially with Eldridge, a direct heir to Satchmo's legacy, perhaps jazz' second greatest trumpeter -- and a saucy vocalist to boot, who generates enduring heat in his vocals with the equally enduring Miss O'Day. Odd too because many of the best titles here would be sneered at as "novelties," like "Watch the Birdie" or the thoroughly beguiling early Frank Loesser "Murder! He Says." These songs are anything but gimmicky in the presentation.
I suspect it was an accident, or perhaps a rare record-company longing to be generous, that compelled the album's producer to add four tracks from Krupa's 1949 band. The drummer had been through a lot -- the trumped-up pot charges, Miss O'Day's nervous breakdown, several years in the wilderness -- before settling down with a bop-oriented group that recorded all too little. If anyone could have made a commercial go of bop, it was Krupa. These four tracks are as sensational as big bands ever got. Listen to "Watch Out!" with the sultry notes of Dolores Hawkins, a vocalist who seems to have come and gone without much of a trace, and you'll know that the sex very broadly hinted at in "Let Me Off Uptown" becomes quite explicit. Gene Krupa knew what he was doing.
Technical note: the sound is very good, save for an unaccountably rejected Jule Styne tune, "Barrelhouse Bessie from Basin Street," taken from a poor-quality transfer of a test pressing. Legacy rectified this in the later Anita O'Day album, which is essential for other reasons.
I can't get enough of this CD.......2001-03-11
This is a wonderful CD. It's upbeat and fun. You'll fall in love with Krupa and Anita O'Day's unique styles as you listen. I plan to order more Gene Krupa CD's, and consider Anita O'Day an added bonus.
the best krupa band ever (and that's saying a lot.).......2000-12-15
This is one of the cd's that must be in my truck at all times. Any one that does not tap their toes simply does not have a pulse. Included in this album are wartime cuts `Harlem On Parade', and `Keep Em Flying'. My personal favorites are `Green Eyes', `Watch The Birdie', and ANY other cut from this album. The best!

Customer Reviews:
Blow, Roy, blow! What an awesome collection on 4 CDs........2007-05-20
You know how hot young guitarists always say that they discovered Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy through the Rolling Stones or Eric Clapton? The amazing Anita O'Day introduced me to Roy Eldridge in much the same way.
I am a big Anita O'Day fan, and finally one day I followed her music back to the Gene Krupa days, and then one tune changed forever how I feel about the trumpet. "Let Me Off Uptown" starts off with a jazzy conversation between Anita and Roy that immediately made me want to know who Roy was. He sings back to her and gets the invitation to "Blow, Roy, blow!" and then he just blew me away. Roy Eldridge, the hottest trumpet player on the circuit since Louis and reigning champion on my playlist all the way up to Clifford Brown.
Well, turns out that tune was also an album title; the whole Gene Krupa band is hot and Eldridge provided the steam on thier recordings. From there, you just have to get his whole collection! Far too many albums to choose from, but this amazing twenty year overview of Eldridge's career highlights is a truly joy giving start on the road to absolutely loving the role of the trumpet in big band swing.
Let your ears lead the way to the great ones...
Great selection.......2006-10-01
Comprehensive overview of the most significant part of a rich career - to say the least. This 4 CD collection starts with Roy's very first recording in 1935 (with Teddy Hill's big band), and ends with some of his choisiest work from the 50's. The booklet is very informative; it has some fine pictures and complete dates and personell listing. Also; it tells the story of Eldridge's career prior to his first recordings.
Sound quality is fine and music is, well, perfect.
Naturally, I already have some of the tracks in Teddy Wilson, Billie Holiday, Gene Krupa or Fletcher henderson collections, but this is still great.
There are some of the best swing combos I have ever heard in this collection, Roy's work in France is marvelous, there are the incredible "Metronome All stars" (on "St. Louis Blues" in two tempos...) with great Billy Eckstine, Lester Young, Terry Gibbs, Kai Winding and others... Big band tracks lag behind a bit (even Henderson, influntial as he was, doesn't fare well when compared to Krupa's, Eldridge's or Hawkins' combos represented here). But, the big band sides are still good or very good swing music.
Contributions of Coleman Hawkins, Chu Berry, Benny Goodman, Oscar Peterson, Gene Krupa, Israel Crosby (on Teddy Wilson's rightly famous "Blues in C sharp minor"), Don Byas, Buddy Tate and others are great but I would particularly like to recomend the Paris tracks, particularly those with Claude Bolling (duos: "Wild man blues" and "Fireworks"). These are marvelous reworking od Armstrong-Hines classics...
All swing fans should get this music on this or any other collections
A Link Between Satchmo and Dizzy.......2005-06-09
Sorry to label the man but he is a great one ...you can hear the emotion..He can really blow...this CD set clocks in at about at 5 hours and it captures a great musician on excellent sound from the early days of his Little Jazz to Swing with Krupa and other names to his own band and beyond...the material spans, live material, excellent sounding source materials and mixes unheard by me...these excellent UK companies give consumers a real treat..and with great books.. I am certain experts may look down on these type of collections but besides the value they are wonderful fun and gives great overviews on quality remastered sound that can only spur interest in Jazz.
