About the Artist
One of Chicago's busiest and most sought after musicians, jazz trumpeter Orbert Davis has recorded over 2700 television and radio commercials and many record projects for such notable artists as Ramsey Lewis, Charles Earland, Kurt Elling, Bob Mamet and William Russo's Chicago Jazz Ensemble. Winner of the 1995 Cognac Hennessy National Jazz Search, Orbert was chosen as one of Chicago Tribune's "1995 Arts People of the Year" and Chicago Magazine named him "Y2k Best Trumpeter in Chicago".

He performs regularly with various groups under his own name, including his critcally acclaimed ensemble "Orbert Davis with Strings Attached". He was featured soloist at the 1996 Chicago Jazz Festival, performing Miles Davis and Gil Evans' "Sketches of Spain". Orbert's composition, "Concerto for Jazz Quartet and Orchestra" received rave reviews after he premiered it with The Chicago Sinfonietta Orchestra in November 1998 at Symphony Center Chicago. In October 1999, along with Jon Faddis and Lester Bowie, Orbert was a featured performer for the Jazz Institute of Chicago's "Tribute to Louis Armstrong: Legacy for the Millennium" where he peformed compositions from Armstrong's Hot 5 and Hot 7 recordings. This performance was repeated in August 2001 at the Chicago Jazz Festival.

Orbert has performed with Wynton Marsalis, TS Monk, Stevie Wonder, Dr. John, Kurt Elling, Ernie Watts, Ramsey Lewis, Grover Washington Jr. and The Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra.

Mr. Davis has a bachelors degree in trumpet performance from DePaul University and a masters degree in Jazz Pedagogy from Northwestern University. He is currently co-founder and Executive Director of MusicAlive!, a comprehensive music curriculum for at-risk youth.

Along with his partner/manager Mark Ingram, Orbert owns and operates ORBARK PRODUCTIONS. They're credits include projects for Atlantic, Capitol, CBS, Epic, MCA and the Warner Brothers record labels. Other projects include arrangements and on-camera performances for feature films such as "A League of Their Own" starring Tom Hanks, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell for Columbia Pictures and "The Babe", starring John Goodman. He recently completed musical arrangements for the upcoming DreamWorks Pictures feature film "Road to Perdition" starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman where he'll also have a cameo appearance.

Maybe I have a one and only, but track #11 is not Sweet Home Alabama. On my disc it is Lola by The Kinks.

"Supergroups" is a misnomer here.......2005-01-13

Best of the 1970's "Supergroups"? This is the best group of songs they could come up with? Music from bands like Boston, Kansas, Styx, ELO, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana and BTO are great choices. But, who in their right frame of mind would consider Grand Funk, Rare Earth, Sugarloaf, or the Little River Band as "Supergroups"? Okay, the Little River Band had several hits, but they certainly weren't "Super". Some of these bands are so dang obscure that I could DARE most of America to name ONE other hit from half the bands on this disc, and I'd bet they'd pull a brain muscle and hemmorhage trying to do it. 14 total tracks. 7 songs are worthy classics, but the other 7 totally miss the boat. If I were producing a disc with these songs, I definitely would not have used the label "Supergroups". Perhaps a more apt title for this CD would be "Poor Man's Hit & Miss Tunes From The 70's". Sound production is less than crisp. Makes a nice drink coaster.

Good Stuff.......2003-01-07

Not a bad collection of 70's stuff, every song on this CD will be pleasing to the ear. Boston, Santana, ELO and others are represented as well as many other groups. If you are into the music of the 70's then this will fullfill all your expectations.

Great Collection!.......2002-05-19

If you're like me and don't own all of the original (albums!) tapes from these bands, then you'll love this CD. I often try to find classic rock compilations that have REALLY good songs on them, but most of the time I only like about 4 or 5 songs on any one collection. Not so with this CD! I snapped this one up because I totally enjoy every one of these songs. And several of these bands were one or two hit wonders, so why buy the band's whole tape in order to get one or two songs? Okay, so I'm not a die hard fan. Whether you have the original tapes or not, you'll like the variety and awesome guitar on this collection of classic 70's rock.

More than merely a headbanger's take on A Star Is Born, Rock Star is, like all great Hollywood middlebrow fare, actually "inspired by a true story": the saga of an Ohio salesman/Judas Priest tribute band vocalist who one day found himself taking Rob Halford's place in the spotlight. But whether its music is big-hair throwback or merely ahead-of-the-curve '80s retro-hip is hardly a matter that will cause quantum theorists sleepless nights. Not surprisingly, the film's soundtrack sounds both distinctly virtual and marketing-department honed: a mix of modern rockers (Everclear's hard-pop title track, the Verve Pipe's "Colorful") and '80s vets (Bon Jovi's genre-defining "Livin' on a Prayer"). Steel Dragon, the film's fictional headliners, feature era vets Jason Bonham on drums, Zakk Wylde on guitar, and vocalist Jeff Scott Soto giving star Mark Wahlberg something to lip-synch. They re-create a frighteningly credible faux-'80s pop-metal ethos that ranges from the big-ballad Bon Jovi-isms of "We All Die Young" to the pounding, metallic Priest-cloning of "Livin' the Life" and "Blood Pollution," and the anthemic "Long Live Rock and Roll," the latter in a ham-fisted performance that begs to be subtitled "(But Please Retire Soon)." All the info!.......2007-06-07

There are some very fattering reviews and descriptions of this album on just about every site you visit that sells it. But, I have yet to find one that gives the complete information on the ficticious band STEEL DRAGON.

Yes the band inculdes some amazing musicians including (Zakk Wylde and Nick Cantonese on Guitars), Jeff Pilson (on bass), and (probably the best rock drummer still alive)Jason bonham. BUT, every reveiw and description I have read, leaves out the fact that Steel Dragon has two lead vocalists. Tracks 4, 5, and 11 are sung by hair metal veteran Mike Matijevic formerly of Steelheart. Songs 2, 7, and 9 are sung by rock vocalist Jeff Scott Soto.

This soundtrack is a must have for all die hard 80's hair metal fans. The original songs are a great throw back to the metal years. And the covers of some classics (written by Sammy Hagar, Ritchie Blackmore and Ronny James Dio) are done with class and power.

All in all worth every peeny paid for it, I also hope these guys get together to put out some more original tunes.

a must-have for any 80's child.......2007-05-24

This is a great movie and this cd is a must-have for any 80's child.

I bought the soundtrack, but was disappointed when I saw that Def Leppard's "Let's Get Rocked" wasn't on the soundtrack. Why didn't it make the cut?!?!

Vivian Campbell used to be in the crowd looking up at the band and wishing that he could be in the band and now he's up on stage and playing and singing with the band.

If Def Leppard would have made the cut, I'd have no reason not to give the cd 5 out of 5 stars. Oh well. Can't win them all I guess.

Rock star review.......2007-05-12

I can watch this movie over and over,and not get bored.The movie is great.The soundtrack is great I love it.Mark walburg Portrays a Rock Star and all the Sin that comes along with being a Rock Star and what you must sacrifice,he does a great job.And so does Jennifer Aniston.I think this is her best acting role.

Steelheart CD.......2007-05-12

I really liked this CD! I saw the movie and fell in love with Steeldragon/Steelheart music. The CD lived up to and exceeded my expectations.

After seeing the hit movie, I had to get my hands on the soundtrack. All those excellent songs you heard in the movie done by Steel Dragon, are included on this soundtrack.

Now I need to buy the movie so I can quit trying to find it on t.v. and just watch it when I want. This cd and movie rank high on my list of must haves.

Classic gangsta hip hop........2007-07-05

This is where it all began for Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. This album was pretty much what catapulted their careers into the future of Hip Hop music. This album was a right up in your face in every aspect. Dealing with everything from gang violence, the drug problem to the injustice's of law enforcement officials. This is a true Hip Hop classic to have in one's archives, especially if you came through that era.

Humorous at times, angry and furious, silly, somphmoric, and strong. These words all fit, yet only begin to describe this work. It is vulgar, it is politically incorrect, it is violent, and it is damn catchy. Infectious hooks, actualy. Why all the negative hype about this one? Because it was put out with no apologies or loosening of it's non stop stranglehold grip on the listener. Great to work out to. These artists, who are very talented, took hip hop to another level, and in so doing expressed their rage, pain, fears and insecurities about life in the inner city. Remarkable indeed, though inappropriate for kids due to the immense and pervasive swearing and glamourizing of murder. It is what it iz. 5 stars for the hooks, and the artists integrity, plus this cd scared the heck out of mainstream white America and the LA police, not to mention the Feds. In NWA's defense: the truth of all of the history of this country, good and bad, from slaughtering the Indians, to the present state of our urban inner cities and prisons are all evidence of the continuation and crisis proportions of racism and a racist prevailing social climate.

You can not understate how good this album really is. It changed hip hop forever, it brought so much aggression and intensity to the listener that you can not help but get hooked. Ice Cube, the angry and politically charged MC, Eazy E, the boy from tha hood, MC Ren, the slick and ruthless MC, Dr. Dre, the deep toned MC and slick producer and DJ Yella, the beat banger, are the foundation for gangsta rap, comin Straight Outta Compton!

Straight Outta Compton is one of the few cd's that changed the way I feel about rap, the cd from start to finish is very good. I listen to Hardcore and other music that is loud and heavy, but there is something about this that I just love!!! buy the cd and you won't regret it!!!

I can only think of a few albums that have really had a major impact on my life. Straight Outta Compton has got to be right at the top of the list. As a young teen I bought the cassette and wore that thing out in my walkman.
I was immediately drawn to the bada** beats and catchy rhythms. Just the raw sound of the bass drum hitting hard will energize anyone listening. The voices of rap legends Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and MC Wren harmoniously unite with the smooth and powerful sounds generated by Dr. Dre and Yella Boy.
But the real hypnotic power of these songs is infused in the lyrics. These guys rap about their tough circumstances growing up in Compton, an extremely dangerous and crime-ridden city in California. As their words depict the harsh times they constantly endured, the listener is pulled in to a world they might be unfamiliar with. I know I was clueless.
I'm not sure if it's done intentionally, but they really romanticize the ghetto life. They glamorize the gangster attitude. I found an overwhelming appeal to this.
I am no longer much of a rap fan since the N.W.A. days. But I'll always remember the spirit that encompasses this masterpiece.

An excellent collection of songs........2006-02-01

Being that I was born in the mid-eighties, I did not have the priveledge of growing up listening to music of this sort. When I found this CD among my dad's collection I decided to give it a listen because I recognized some of the songs. I'm very glad I did!

I greatly enjoy almost all of the songs, in particular The Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the Tokens.

The rest of the songs are top-notch "oldies" as well, easily recognizable classics. The only song I don't really care for is "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" by Jan & Dean, though it is still an okay song.

Overall, I would certainly recommend this CD... when you find one both a father and a daughter can easily enjoy together, it must be good.

This is one BAD example of the music of this decade. First, the 60s started on JAN.one but I guess that dosen't count!

I know all of the songs!.......2002-01-23

I hate compilation CD's that are supposed to be the best of something but manage to be the best of whatever singles the producer had lying around in the backseat of his car. This CD, however, is what it claims to be. I've never seen a compilation album with so many hits and so many recognizeable tunes. All of these songs are fun to listen to and the few songs you may not recognize are catchy 60-ish sounding riffs anyway. This is, by far, the most versatile CD I own.

A gorgeous CD.......2000-06-23

Hello. It's a real nice collection most of all because it includes some artist i thought I never heard again. Some of them as The Kinks, The Vogues or Jan and Dean aren't easy to find in some other collections. The sound is excelent and the artists are well selected. Congratulations.

Yet Another Funkadelic Best.......2006-09-15

This was too hot to handle if you were not into funk but the ever danceable "One Nation" made you get up. It was a National anthem for "us folks" and gave us some pride in knowing that we are "One Nation Under A Groove" and we had a voice. We had "Lift Every Voice " and now we got "One Nation" what more can you ask for. You have a wonderfully written dance song with the team of george Clinton, Gary Shider and the multi-talented Walter "Junie" Morrisson. "Grooveallegience" is another well done song withe the bass of Rodney "Skeet" Curtis..Another revamp of the funk mob but not noticeable only great music. The are puffing out their chests and saying "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?"--The "Promental............enemasquad" was a hilarious treat and I am glad that they put the instumental on the album as it is a good music track--They just lacked the backing vocal tracks that was on "Promental". "Maggot Brain' the live version was very good Eddie or Mike I don't remember but excellent all of the same. This was the year for the Parliament/Funkadelic as they put a flag on the earth and then went underwater---I said it before, and I'll say it again, what a funk mob!!!

One Nation Under a Groove.......2006-07-20

This is one of the most important albums for this group. Though many are aware of the title track,( One Nation Under a Groove" THE Funk Anthem) much of the rest of the album has been over looked. The strong blues background, mixed with bits of reggage and soul make this not only a funky dance album, but also a great album to relax to. It it not to be missed.

there's plenty of stuff to groove to on this album. it's an awesome blend of funk, disco, rock, reggae, jazz, and messages about unity. if you can get past the outer space stuff, poo humor, and the "bonus EP", you're in for a real treat. get the album Maggot Brain, too. it'll blow your mind.

There are some many good funkadelic records I happen to own this on vinyl and is an essential in any record/cd collection. If you are thinking about buying this get it on vinyl instead. If you don't have a record player then invest sucka.

Each and every member of Funkadelic HAD to have been high as a kite to come up with the songs on this album. Aside from that, this album showcases some really great musicians. I enjoy listening to it every time.

A Great Variety of Songs from the 1950's.......2002-01-28

If you enjoy songs from the 1950's this CD should be in your collection. It has a great variety of songs from that time period. What made it especially attractive to me was the inclusion of the song "The Witch Doctor." I have tried very hard to find this song on a CD, and this is the only one that I could find that had it included. I wouldn't have bought the CD if it wasn't for this song, because I already had the "key" songs for me on other CD's, but if you don't have these songs on a CD of your own this would be a great one to have in your collection.

Timeless classic........2006-11-07

A lot of classic albums have a difficult time withstanding the test of time. N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton" was revolutionary for its time, but does it really hold weight today? The Sugarhill Gang carried hip-hop into the mainstream, but is "Rapper's Delight" anymore than a novelty track in this century? Even masterpieces from Eric. B & Rakim can seem dated at times, not because of Rakim's vocals, which are smooth as always, but Eric B.'s production even can even be difficult to fully appreciate in today's hip-hop culture. The list goes on, and while these albums are most-definitely classics, they seem obsolete in certain aspects from a fan of modern hip-hop's perspective.

Some albums are timeless, though; Eazy-E's Eazy-Duz-It, Slick Rick's The Adventures of Slick Rick, Ultramagnetic MC's Critical Beatdown, and of course, EPMD's seminal classic, Strictly Business, is just as fresh today as it was two decades ago; perhaps even more so in the stagnant market certain areas of hip-hop today are enduring. Why does this album preserve so well in today's fickle hip-hop society?

Production which is unmatched by even some of the most-advanced producers today, and flows on par with your favorite emcee. Make no doubt about it, this is some of the dopest production you'll find on any album in hip-hop's extensive history, and it still a landmark for sampling in hip-hop music. The flows and rhymes? Far ahead of their time. Parrish has one of the smoothest flows this side of Big L and C.L. Smooth, while Erick Sermon has a thick-tongued New York accent, which is just as gruff as it is infectious. Their rhymes? Few people were kicking knowledge like EPMD back in '88; they set the precedents for emcees like GZA, Mood, and AZ who drop science in a mellow, and serene manner.

From start to finish, this album is tighter than nearly everything you're gonna find on the market; the samples are beautifully chosen, the rapping is elegant, and articulate, and the overall product is an album that even a hardcore hip-hop detractor would have to give props to. Not only a landmark in hip-hop, but a landmark in music; EPMD are true legends in the game.

20 years later.......2006-08-13

this is one of those albums I could review in hundreds of thousands of words because I like it that much. but no matter how much I type, you still won't be able to experience this kind of music unless you listen to it for yourself.

"it's my thing" is undoubtedly one of, if not the single best hip-hop songs ever. everyone in hip-hop has taken a piece from that song, from the likes of dr. dre and snoop dogg ("next episode") to the roots and mos def ("double trouble") to tha alkaholiks ("only when I'm drunk", uses the same beat) to jay-z ("aint no n***a", also uses the same beat). the lyrics are hardcore and erick sermon completely destroys the track with his funky samples and lyrical firepower, and pmd is the lead hitter on the track with battle raps that are just as good.

if you ever listen to old school rap stations a lot, you'll notice that epmd, big daddy kane and slick rick get the most rotations. that's because they made some of the best hip-hop of all time. 1988 is easily the best year in hip-hop (only 93-95 can compare), and these guys are living proof.

A Must Listen...........2006-02-08

Simply...Strictly Business is not a joke. This album is sick and the samples are just awesome. EPMD was so different from the rest of the hip-hop community back in the day. Erick and Parrish sampled Eric Clapton's version of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" on "Strictly Business", Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" on "I'm Housin'", The JB's "(It's not the express) It's the JB's monaurail" for "Let The Funk Flow" and of course, Zapp's "More Bounce to Ounce" and Kool and Gang's "Jungle Boogie for the killer "You Gots to Chill" and the results were brilliant. If you're even remotely interested in the art of sampling go pick this up now! As well as the Beastie Boys "Paul Boutique." These two albums are the pinnacles of sampling before the politics....Classic all the way.

The First Of Three Straight Classics [Part 1 of 3] (5 Stars).......2006-01-06

There isn't a whole lot I can add to the reviews that have been written already. We all know this album is classic material. This album came out when rappers didn't have to clear samples, so cats were sampling like crazy and this album was as well put together as any other album that came out in 1988. Here it is 18 years later and this album is just as dope and fresh now as it was when it was rockin' the clubs and the streets in '88. The album doesn't sound dated as far as beats (the slang is way dated though) and is still heavily sampled even today.

I usually reserve some space in my reviews for flaws, but there are none on this album. This LP is excellent in all areas.

Like I said before, this album is without a doubt classic material. You won't ever hear albums like this being made anymore. The heavy handed sampling is unlike anything you've heard before (with the exception of Paul's Boutique and a handful of others). There are very few landmark albums in hip hop.......this is one of them. If you don't have this in your collection, then your collection is suspect. Go get this A.S.A.P. if you haven't already.

This is a great compilation of some of those oldies that will bring memories flooding back. The tracks have been very well chosen and there's lots of good listening on this CD. Recommend to anybody who loves the early rock music and its' origins. Can't wait to get my next selection in the same theme.

I bought this CD for one song only (Sleepwalk by Santos & Johnny). When I first heard it, I was surprised by the number of really great songs on this CD from that era that I already knew and really enjoyed. All songs are by the original artists which is a must. Great CD!

I'm so happy I bought this as a gift for my father, not only because he loves these songs and grew up with these songs, but I personally, know of them from various movies.

I must say that, even though I'm in my twenties, I find all, and I mean all, the songs of this album are unique, and exceptional. Who can resist the sweet sounds of Ritchie Valen's "Donna", Frankie Avalon's "Venus" or Doris Day's "Que Sera Sera" to name a few. You can sing along to each song! I could sit back in the twilight hours, with a glass of mellowed liquor and take a trip back to the fifties when I listen to this CD. Its as if I actually lived through that era.

You won't be sorry you bought this album for a loved one or yourself....

I didn't think it would've been possible to buy a CD with four of my all-time favourite 50s songs appearing on it, but "Chart Toppers: Romantic Hits Of The 50s" has been a wonderful surprise! Think 'Fifties', think 'Romance' and you've got to think of tracks like, "Sleepwalk" (Santo & Johnny), "Love Is A Many Splendoured Thing" (The Four Aces), "I Only Have Eyes For You" (The Flamingos) and "Sea Of Love" (Phil Phillips). These, like the rest of the tracks found on this wonderful album, will be rather familiar to even the more modern music listener as these songs have been used countless times in Hollywood movie soundtracks, or advertising a plethora of products since the 50s. And if you don't recognize them, you damn well should!

Other mentionable highlights include: "My Special Angel" (Bobby Helms), "Donna" (Ritchie Valens), "Love Letters In The Sand" (Pat Boone) and "All I Have To Do Is Dream" by the Everly Brothers. Still, there's not a bad track to be found here, which is quite rare for a compilation album. And don't think this is a vintage collection just for oldies either. My girlfriend and I - who are both in our 30s - like nothing better than to 'snuggle' up on the couch while listening to this. And that only proves a great song *never* ages. Treat yourself and buy this CD. You won't regret it!

I really enjoy almost all of the songs on this CD. It is one of the best 60's collection CDs ever. It has a wide variety of songs, almost all of them easily recognizable. All in all, a very worthwile CD for listening to anytime!

Wow what can I say about this album. This was the one of the first ones that really you couldn't listen to around your parents, along with Too Short and others. Every song is memorable. I give every song a 5/5. My favorites are Easier Said Than Done, Still Talkin, Nobody Move, and No More ?s. There are no love songs just straight street here. Everybody should know these songs by the beginning lines. Woke up quick at about noon just thought that I had to be compton soon, gotta get drunk before my day begin before my mama start bi++++n about my friends. Or My name is Eazy yeah this is true gettin your attention is what Im gonna do hardcore yo I can never be stopped askem if im def and they say the boy go's off. but this is not the original album. i am only giving the original album classic status. it stopped at chapter 8 verse 10. all the songs after that are after eazy fell off and ice cube was no longer ghost writting for him. fat girl on my jock?? i think that was originally on the nwa and the posse album. keep it real.

Perfect In Every Way.......2006-04-15

Eazy-E is my favorite rapper and i find him highly underrated. He was easily the best member in NWA and the hype surrounding his death should have been much bigger. He is a one-of-a kind rap genius with a sound unlike anybody else. This album is a masterpiece and is perfect in every way. The opening song Still Talkin' is hilarious and Eazy drops freestyles that sound like he isnt even trying. To hear some of his best verses of all time check out No More ?s which is my absolute favorite song done by him ever. The album flows together beautifully and even the bonus songs at the end are funny including Merry Muthaf***in' Xmas which is classic. Other classics include Ruthless Villian, 2 Hard Mutha's, Boyz-N-The Hood Remix, Eazy-Duz-It and We Want Eazy. There is no doubt in my mind that he should be a legend along with Pac and Biggie... he just left WAY before he could establish himself as big as them. also the feud with Dre and Death Row hurt his reputation greatly right before he died. Nonetheless he is amazing and Dre & MC Ren also add to this great cd. Do not hold out.. buy this ASAP

This CD is Tight. Easy-E is one of the greatest rappers of all-time. My Favorite tracks are Nobody Move, Boyz-N-The-Hood (remix), Eazy-Duz-It , Merry Muthaf***in' Xmas . The whole cd is good too. You should pick it up if you dont have it.
