Not unlike Peter Brotzmann's outstanding "WELS" Concert (Okka) - a collaboration with Chicago percussionist Hamid Drake and Moroccan guembri player Mahmoud Gania - the German saxophonist's Die Like a Dog Quartet pools the incisive talents of some of the planet's top creative-music explorers, including Drake, Japanese electric trumpeter Toshinori Kondo, and New York bassist William Parker.

Originally assembled five years ago to pay tribute to the free-improvising pioneer Albert Ayler, the quartet comes on loud, strong, soulful, and so focused it's almost scary. Every bracing sound combination and dynamic shift in these 45- and 22-minute spontaneous masterpieces is in natural order. Like the most impossible seeming Ayler, Coltrane, or Dolphy solo, each movement fuels the intensity of and builds logically into the next.

The eerily synchronous, pitch-bent lines from Kondo's reverberating trumpet and Br_tzmann's tenor sax, clarinet, or tarogato soar across Parker and Drake's earthy rhythmic anchor with the urgency and conviction of a cosmic awakening. This recording packs such a big bang precisely because every moment of the music-making cycle is indeed a moment of perpetual creation - procreation - with limitless possibilities. It's living proof that great jazz is a feat of nature, a force that knows no boundaries and requires no roadmap to reach its destination.
