The great Jelly Roll Morton said that if you don't have a Latin tinge in your music "you won't have the right seasoning for jazz." Nobody understands that better than the Dallas-born pianist-composer Cedar Walton. As an member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the '60s, and as an outstanding composer in his own right, Walton has utilized Latin music throughout his distinguished career. On this intimate date with percussionist Ray Mantilla and bassist Chucho Martinez, Walton interprets a number of jazz and Latin standards using just piano, bass, and percussion. Walton's blues-drenched pianisms and elegant touch work magic on the ingenious jazz-and-samba version of Ary Barroso's gem, "Brazil," and on the timeless Cuban boleros "Tres Palabras," "Perfidia," and "Besame Mucho." With Mantilla's tasty drumming and Martinez's rock-steady bass lines, Cedar Walton lays down a relaxed Afro-Caribbean vibe not unlike the decades-old pairing of Nat "King" Cole's trio with bongo master Jack Costanzo. --Eugene Holley Jr.

    Hang on tight. "The Bumpy Road" has plenty of twists and turns. However, with guitarist John Miller and mandolinist John Reischman in the drivers' seats, we can be assured that we'll arrive safely at our final destination. Along the way, we might visit Central America, Ireland, Cuba, Puerto Rico, South America, and Paris. Largely original material characterizes the smooth, dreamy album from Miller and Reischman. "The Bumpy Road" is their second duo project and was released in 2002. A bit different than their first release, "The Singing Moon" (1998), this CD has both musicians equally sharing the soloing and improvising. Also, "The Path Downhill" features the vocals of Koralee Tonack. There are no weak cuts on "The Bumpy Road," but some personal favorites are those that either really challenge the pickers...or result in a musical bonding that reaps bountiful rewards. Miller's "Danza" and Reischman's "Snake Eyes" and "Three Lions" are good examples. Besides using their nimble fingers, these guys clearly know how to be astute listeners to each other too. Celso Machado's chorinho "Pacoca" and Miller's jazz waltz "Wind Song" make the intricate notes and techniques sound so very effortless. We know that great skill and exertion are need to do it all so right, and we even hear a few grunts of concentration. The only slight criticism I have of "The Bumpy Road" is that this type of music would have a much fuller sound with a little low end as in having a hot upright bass player in the session, especially to complement the mandolin's rhythm during guitar breaks.

    Expect plenty of flair, festivity and fun while on "The Bumpy Road" with Reischman and Miller, two outstanding musicians who share similar admirable qualities -- great rhythm, creativity, respect for tradition, and sense of humor.     . . . but altogether a success. Yes, Cedar Walton has recorded a handful of Latin tunes on his nearly 60 discs as leader, but he's never been known for his "Latin Tinge" as someone like, say, McCoy Tyner has.

    But he nails it here. Whether transforming a non-Latin original like "The Vision"--given a decidedly un-Latin treatment on the 1993 session The Billy Higgins Quintet--composing songs that reside squarely in the center of the Latin sensibility ("Latin America" and "Latino Blue"), or putting his own unique spin on Latin classics such as "Brazil," "Triste," "Tres Palabras" (my favorite cut), "Perfidia," and "Besame Mucho" (a close second, with its slooow Andalusian burn), leader Walton seems perfectly at home playing a huge variety of distinct but related Latin song forms.

    His bandmates, brilliant musicians themselves, New York Latin jazz mainstays Chucho Martinez (bass, via Venezuela) and Ray Mantilla (percussion, via the South Bronx), always seem to create the exact perfect rhythmic context for the leader's pianistic colorations and solo flights.

    This is a Collection from one of the great Legends of Latin Jazz music. Having Played with all the top names, Mark Now brings us his own recording with just the right touch of "Latin Tinge". If you are a Latin Jazz buff like me pick this one up! Nothing but great tunes here. Remember "Linda Chicana" Mark' gorgeous Cha Cha...Well this disc will not dissapoint you.

          Album Description

          The Luna Band's debut release, "Listen ... and you will hear", aptly demonstrates the band's versatility, featuring traditional and contemporary Ukrainian songs, as well as two original songs written by the band members, all in the unique style and interpretation which is Luna's signature. The songs were arranged by Oles Kuzyszyn and the CD was engineered and produced by Yuri Turchyn at his own studio, Wheatsheaf Productions. Oles Kuzyszyn's daughter, Adriana, provided backing vocals on some of the tracks.

          Luna's CD "Listen and You Will Hear" is magnificently produced, recorded and executed. Nowhere else have I heard such wonderful tunes played so expertly. Kudos to the players and five stars to the production. I highly recommend it.
