The fact that the young piano wunderkind Joey Calderazzo worked with Branford Marsalis, who was musically joined at the hip with the late pianist Kenny Kirkland, and with Michael Brecker, and Bob Belden, speaks volumes to his prowess and promise. On his Columbia debut, Calderazzo performs in the classic piano-trio format with the volcanic drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts and bassist John Patitucci. What makes Calderazzo interesting to listen to is the way he slurs and blurs the influences of the great keyboard giants: the dexterity of Kirkland, plus the lyricism of Keith Jarrett times the improvisational surprise of Herbie Hancock. Overall, the music on this CD rings with the type of neoclassic modernism that reaches back and moves forward, from the whirlwind waltz of "The Oracle" and the abstract adventures on "Detonation" to the plaintive "Haiku" and the hypnotic bass lines on "The Charmer." Calderazzo's rhythmic resurrection of the classic Bill Evans ballad "Time Remembered" is the teasing tip of the iceberg, which hints at this musician's bright future. --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Jazziz
You can pretty much hear McCoy Tyner in the voicings and attack of "Oracle," the track that opens Joey Calderazzo's self-titled debut. But quit worrying: "Oracle" is actually a conscious (and well-turned) tribute to Tyner, rather than a case of slavish imitation. Better yet, it opens into an attractive and sometimes superb disc, in which Calderazzo sifts the influence of Tyner and a few other post-bop keyboard giants - most notably Evans, Hancock, and Jarrett - to craft as good a summation as you'd want of the modern piano trio. On this, his first album for his new label, Calderazzo may have benefited from the good counsel of producer Branford Marsalis, who until recently directed Columbia's jazz efforts (and in whose quartet Calderazzo currently works). For example, the music traces a graceful arc of tempi and emotions, the better to frame the fine brush-strokes of the pianist's improvising.

Credit goes also to Calderazzo's sidemen, the preternaturally gifted bassist John Patitucci and Jeff Watts, the prototype drummer of the "new mainstream." Watts and Calderazzo first hooked up in the mid-'90s, and the pianist speaks glowingly of the rapport they share. Based on the evidence, I'd have to agree. With others leaders, Watts has overplayed his role on dozens of recordings, but here, he applies exquisite taste and discretion on the Calderazzo ballads "Catania" and "Haiku" while streamlining his fulminations on Michael Brecker's adrenaline-laced "Slings And Arrows."

Purely beautiful music.

Joey does make a huge statement with this recording. That statement is that he isn't following current trends in the music industry. Rather, he is pushing himself to grow as a musician. In doing so, he has produced some music that penetrates right to your soul, if you let it.

2 out of 5 stars Not a very strong statement ! .......2007-06-14

I have been listening lately to a lot of wonderfull European pianist.....and I must say after listening to Joey new cd , I'm not impressed , kind of empty music , not very strong writing .Does not take you anywhere . The additional two guests did not realy add any kind of impact .

The solo-piano format is the polygraph test for pianists. On this release, Joey Calderazzo, who has worked with Michael Brecker and is currently with Branford Marsalis's group, passes it with flying colors, thanks to his fleet-fingered technique and his diverse influences. On the standard "Just One of Those Things," Calderazzo displays a surprisingly strong stride-style left hand, while the meditative "Chopin" showcases his grasp of the classical tradition. "Bri's Dance" and "The Legend of Dan" reveal his ease with Latin tempos and waltzes. The late Kenny Kirkland, Calderazzo's predecessor in Marsalis's quartet, wrote the wistful ballad "Dienda"--also recorded by Sting on All This Time. Calderazzo's moving rendition represents a passing of the torch, from fallen star to a rising one. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Album Description

New solo release by pianist for the Branford Marsalis Quartet Haiku is Joey Calderazzo's debut recording for Marsalis Music, and represents his renewed commitment to American music and its rich tradition. Although the term "haiku" is a few thousand years old, it finds new meaning in the hands of this creative musician.

5 out of 5 stars Melody und Harmony.......2005-03-24

Soft jazz has its criticisms. Some people call it `dinner music'; as to say it only deserves a listen at dinnertime. Some people shun it because it doesn't have a hard swing tempo or feel to it. But, for those who can fully appreciate soft jazz (not smooth jazz, but acoustic/traditional jazz played slowly and softly), Joey makes his contribution to this expressive form.

This is Joey as rarely heard before. If you are accustomed to hearing him swinging hard melodic lines against the revelations of Branford Marsalis' saxophone then this is quite the revelation. Now, Joey is showing his reflective side. Joey's playing can be described as gentle, atmospheric, and expansive. It makes me think of the 2-volume set "The Solo Sessions" from Milestone of Bill Evans.

In Haiku, Joey Calderazzo shows his meditative side. Within this solo piano package, his playing is fashioned in a `thema con variazoni' form. With each `variazoni', he expands the theme further and further within the structure. It's a dynamic contrast to the solo piano work of McCoy Tyner, where McCoy solos with the intention of building a new musical environment from a simplistic (by relation) theme, Joey is thinking on the piano with the harmonic inventiveness of Herbie Hancock (live, circa 1964) and with tempo momentum of Bill Evans.

Haiku is a music album for musicians. This time, Joey has taken time to play with the essence of music in mind. This is music for music lovers. There are no avant-garde licks or double-time solos. What you get here is the study, the science of the melody and the harmony; the two basic elements of music.

So, sit back and enjoy this conversation between Joey and the piano we are so lucky to witness.

5 out of 5 stars even better than expected.......2004-09-15

To see Joey live is to experience joy. On the upbeat numbers he is literally dancing out of his seat, his legs flying back and forth like a kid on a swing. On the slow ballades, he hunches over the keyboard ala Bill Evans and pulls out lines that seem fashioned in heaven. His own compositions, especially the title tune on this album, will break your heart and make you feel great while it is breaking. He took this piece more up tempo in a trio setting (with the great Jeff 'Tain Watts on drums) in an earlier album, and it was great then. Now, it is a masterpiece. Play it even for your friends who don't like jazz - it will open their eyes. Chopin, which sounds very much like the romantic composer reborn in the 21st century, is equally haunting and beautiful. The faster numbers - done in a variety of styles(its good to hear stride piano again) - can swing slowly and deeply or race past in a blur of extraordinary virtuosity. This is really good stuff from one of our best mainstream/postbop pianists. His exploration of rich and often unusual harmonies in particular is worth attention, especially in his own compositions. This guy can play.

5 out of 5 stars kinda best taste of piano trio.......2004-05-18

I've got this album ten years ago from BlueNote label, and it is still one of my best favorite piano trio. Joey's talent shown in both ballad lyricism (Blue in Green, The Traveler) and up-beat driving playing (No Adult, Black Nile ) was incredible this time. I've never listened more beautifil arco than John Patitucci's play in Blue in Green. Well, I do not know what happened to Joey after releasing this album - "Secret" was kinda boring...

5 out of 5 stars best calderazzo?.......2004-04-24

One of best albums by calderazzo, Hancock-influenced post-bop pianist. His originals evidence exceptional composing abilities. It is very unfortunate that this Cd is out of print now.

OK, this album is "Stright-Ahead" and "Right down the middle"..... Upright acoustic bass and rivets in the ride cymbal. If you are a Jerry Bergonzi fan, YOU NEED TO OWN THI S ALBUM. Period! Joey Caldorazzo is out of his mind on this record as well.
Now, for the non-musician....... this album can be interpeted as a little frantic and noisy. However, if you are a Coltrane fan, then you would consider this good listening.

4 out of 5 stars exciting adventure.......2005-02-16

This album is a great one for people who haven't heard much gonz. It was my first Jerry Bergonzi album and I plan to listen to many more. His ideas are playful and inventive throughout each track.

I highly suggest this to someone looking for a good modern player to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Supreme ferocity and soulfulness.......2007-06-06

I thought it was about time I put in my two cents on this brilliant CD, since I've played it more than any album in my collection (I've got several thousand, so that's saying something). Whenever I need a high-octane burst of energy and intensity or something to fire up contemplation or inspiration, I put this on. Calderazzo has a knack for making the muscular lyrical, the melodic percussive. He's certainly got some Tyner in him in the hammered notes, but he's got a signature sound very few can muster out of the old piano trio. The propulsion he generates with equally briiliant sidemen, especially Jeff Tain Watts, makes it feel like there's a half dozen guys here. The combination of spontaneity and surprise makes this album unique among all the CDs I have. I can play it every day and not get sick of it. And as a journalist and author who writes with jazz on the ear buds, I do play it almost every day. Weird but true. This is one of the great lost gems of contemporary jazz. Joey, keep at it. Can someone at Blue Note sign him up?

4 out of 5 stars joey.......2006-10-17

I think Joey is a great player. He has lots of vocab and can adapt well to different settings. With that being said he is no Kenny Kirkland (but who is). I miss Kenny's playing so much that I have the bad habit of comparing him to people, especially when they play with Branford. Great album though, Joey's smokin!

5 out of 5 stars Burning Spirits.......2003-07-01

Yes, they reside here - on a disc. Three years later, Joey Calderazzo is no longer a newcomer but this album remains one of my favorite since its release. The review above cites the influence of Tyner but Calderazzo's runs are reminiscent of Monk (to my ears), especialy on 'Detonation'. But Calderazzo and his trio are in fine order from start to finish. And Joey was (at the time this was recorded) simply on fire. The disc has all the intensity, flair and savagery of cosmopolitan New York, which is not easy to capture with eight cuts. An excellent investment and a very smart jazz album.

This is a very good album. The more I've listened to it the more I like it. Calderazzo has all the tools, and he plays with a great melodic sensibility. This album has a bit of everything - ballads, modal jazz, up-tempo bop. A lot of fun.

Three famous musicians reunited in the making of a record full of subtleties. Joey Calderazzo and Jeff "Tain" Watts, often in the company of Michael Brecker, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, are joining this time bassist Sylvain Gagnon. The title, Simply Music, reflects well the spirit of the music: respect and love for jazz through a modern interpretation. They let go of all constraints and play a music full of soul. We could'nt have hoped for higher results from a trio of this caliber.

          Album Description

A potentially significant pianist playing in the modern mainstream, Joey Calderazzo's career got off to a strong start with a series of fine Blue Note albums. He studied classical piano from age eight, discovered jazz a few years later, and hit the big time when he joined Michael Brecker's band in 1987. He went on to record with Brecker, Bob Belden, Jerry Bergonzi, Rick Margitza, and Bob Mintzer. In addition to his own projects, Calderazzo replaced the late Kenny Kirkland in the Branford Marsalis Quartet. (Scott Yanow, All Music Guide)
