In the late '20s, when Duke Ellington was creating his first masterpieces, Earl Hines was defining the art of solo jazz piano, combining bright lead lines and potent rhythm with startling and erratic flights of keyboard invention. After decades of leading swing and Dixieland bands, Hines returned to small groups and solo piano in the '60s. If his creative powers had changed, they had actually increased, and his later recordings provided both much improved sound and the length (with full-length LPs) to let him trace his magical and unpredictable path for chorus after chorus. This two-CD set drawn from his recordings of Ellington material is among the finest of his later work, as Hines plays with genuine spontaneity and an elastic imagination on familiar and obscure compositions, from "Come Sunday " and the early "Black and Tan Fantasy" to the seldom-heard "Black Butterfly." 3 out of 5 stars I can hear the lead sheets rustling..........2006-01-01

Well, look...Hines is incredible, but if he's gonna play like this, I'd rather hear him play "I've Got the World on a String". The only thing very Ellingtonian about this CD is the fact that Hines belongs more-or-less to the same generation as Duke. He treats every composition as a simple "head"; he doesn't find any orchestrational specificity in any of the pieces - they all are treated basically the same. There are many Hines CD's with more to offer than this one. In fact, I consider this one of the most overrated discs of all time. I feel like critics have rated it based on the idea. I can't believe they really listened to it. Why isn't Quintessential on Ciaroscuro reissued? That's a masterpiece.

It's a masterful musical work . Relaxing . Easy on the brain . Good any time of the day. -Morrow

Maybe it's the crystal-clear keyboard sound Earl "Fatha" Hines has on the three CDs of this all-Ellington solo piano program, or maybe it's the spread-wide approach Hines takes to the tunes, extending some of them to over 10 minutes, or maybe it's just all the compacted wisdom and joy Ellington wrote into the originals, but something about this package is magnificent and unforgettable. Issued as a single CD first volume and a two-CD second volume, this collection makes the smaller chapters into a full, packed book, a treasure trove indeed. Hines's career as a piano soloist runs parallel to Ellington's rise as a composer and bandleader. He perfected his execution so that the muscularity of his formidable strength on the keys was in perfect proportion to his wandering genius. Hines runs the keyboard like a complex but easily adored machine, peeling off lines and rockin' the rhythms like it was all a labor of longstanding love. This package is lovable beyond language. It's a whole lot of gems lined up one after the other. --Andrew Bartlett

    5 out of 5 stars Must-Have Solo Piano.......2000-03-18

Earl Hines is often overlooked as a solo piano player, but this systematic working through of Duke Ellington's charts is astonishing. Hines practically redefines himself in these sustained tributes to the Duke. I couldn't be without it.
