About the Artist
Composer and multi-instrumentalist Michel Portal has been called a father figure of the French modern jazz scene. Portal first gained notoriety working with modern and contemporary music composers, including Pierre Boulez. He initiated the free jazz movement in France in the 60's, creating a variety of projects that encouraged collective improvisation, sonic explorations, and instant composing. Beginning in the 70's, he worked as the Michel Portal Unit, which brought together unique meetings of European and American musicians for free improvisation. Many great recording, concert and film projects followed with a diverse list of collaborators: Jack DeJohnette, Dave Liebman, Martial Solal, and members of Prince's New Power Generation.
Jazz accordionist Richard Galliano got his first break in 1973 when he landed a job conducting, arranging and composing for French singing star Claude Nougaro. Soon after, some brilliant career advice from Tango great Astor Piazzolla set Galliano on his current path: "Rediscover your French roots. You need to take up the New Musette, just as I invented the Tango Nuevo." With that, a new musical style was born of Galliano's roots and influences: Italian and French dance hall traditions; Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker-influenced improvisation; Piazzolla music and more. Galliano recorded with Chet Baker in the mid-80's and caught the attention of producer Francis Dreyfus. In 1993, Galliano signed with Dreyfus Jazz, a fruitful relationship that produced several great recordings such as "New York Tango" (1996) with Bireli Lagrene, George Mraz and Al Foster; "French Touch" (1998) with Daniel Humair, J.F. Jenny Clark, and Portal; and "Passatori" with a 14 piece string orchestra.
Product Description
For almost a decade, the duo of Michel Portal and Richard Galliano has been one of jazz music's most unique and captivating pairings. The juxtaposition of Galliano's accordion - swirling and swelling - with Portal's inventiveness on an array of reed instruments produces mesmerizing textures and tones that are without parallel. Galliano/Portal first documented their collaboration on "Blow Up" (Dreyfus Jazz) in 1997. A critical and commercial success, critic Les Line described it as "one of the most remarkable instrumental duets in jazz history...a glorious tête-à-tête that expands the horizons of jazz and world music."
In the years that followed, the duo has thrilled concert and festival audiences throughout the world with their moody and mesmerizing music. Dramatic stylistic, sonic and rhythmic shifts keep the excitement at the highest level. They seem to breathe with one breath - completing and complementing each other's phrases in complete communion.
"Concerts" collects many of the most dazzling moments from their over 300 live performances. Featuring new versions of their concert staples and surprises aplenty, the program exhibits the duo's tremendous range and symbiotic connection on compositions by Galliano, Portal, Astor Piazzolla, and Hermeto Pascoal. Concerts is a thrilling document of something special and rare in the world of jazz.

Riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay is in peak form on Coldplay Live 2003. This CD/DVD two-pack was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during an exhaustive year-long world tour, and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet, not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of either gender. Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker, and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2, and their own unique sonic landscape. "Politik" gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive! highlights include "Daylight," "Yellow," the as-yet-unreleased new song "Moses," and the popular hits "In My Place," "Clocks," and "The Scientist." And while the concert visuals are slick and professional (perhaps placing a bit too much emphasis on singer/frontman Chris Martin), this DVD and CD--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality. Culled from 400 hours of home video, the 40-minute "concert diary" represents a wasted opportunity, enjoyable for hardcore fans but offering no insight into the band or its individual members. Much better, then, to play the concert at healthy high volume, and appreciate Coldplay in the prime of their young career. --Jeff Shannon
Description
The two-disc set includes a 90-minute, nine-camera, super 16 live shoot taken from their July 21 and 22, 2003 performances at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney, Australia, as well as band commentary, a never before broadcast behind-the-scenes documentary, a special tour diary and the edited audio CD. The DVD and CD will also include two PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED live tracks- "The One I Love" and "Moses."

coldplay live....good background music.......2007-04-10
Coldplay is definitely a solid live band, the problem is, from a production; sound quality standpoint, how do intelligent musicians like this not realize that you need to increase the high end (treble) to maximize the low end (bass)....the way we used to do back in the 80's...the resonance of the bass is greatly reduced without the high end...this is how bands back then used to get that bright, echo-ee, clean live sound...man, i saw eddie money outdoors one october night at heather farms in walnut creek, ca, and his band sounded freaking awesome...bassy, trebly...crystal clear, the sound just cut through the night sky...anyway, when i hear the last two or three minutes of Politik...I'm in absolute heaven...as good as it is, it could have been so much better - along with the rest of the album, with a little bit stronger production / sound quality...This band is way too talented to suffer from sound like this...That being said, this is a solid live album, and you can't go wrong with the cd/dvd combo pak. And by the way, Chris Martin apparently says we're in for a real treat...they have an incredible song in the works that's about to be released...looking forward to it bro...and to you and the band getting back on the road again...who knows, maybe next time you guys come around, i can actually afford to buy a ticket...peace...out
Quality Product.......2007-03-08
I received this product on time, and was very pleased with my purchase. This is a very good concert for those that really enjoy Coldplay and have not been fortunate enough to go to a real concert.
COLDPLAY LIVE.......2006-11-06
I went to a live Coldplay show and this DVD was as spectacular as the live show!! I reccomend this to any Coldpay fan or anyone that is a fan of live music. ENJOY!!
im listen to this genre too.......2006-07-29
coldplay is a great band. this album is for real fans.
the dvd is bangin ya'll
the songs are great and have a distinct sound only coldplay can produce.
Quite good concert but sloppy editing.......2006-05-03
It's always fun watching concert DVD's. For one thing, being a musician, I can actually watch not only how they play the songs but see the musicianship of the band without the benefit of redoing takes and overdubbing certain parts. It's still a bit too early for a Coldplay DVD but still it's quite a good one regardless, it's just marred by the MTV-style editing that I'm very much despising at the moment.
The show combines some tracks from first release Parachutes to 2nd release A Rush of Blood to the Head, as well as 3 non-album tracks. There's of course crowd favorites such as Trouble(with a huge end sing along), the Scientist, Clocks, Don't Panic, Yellow with a beautifully sung intro to album tracks such as Amsterdam, Daylight and Shiver. As for the 3 non-album tracks, I love 2: The One I Love, a big rocker with a catchy ending("sing it to me, oh oh") and See You Soon, a beautiful/melancholy acoustic ballad.
The editing problems are first evident in the Politik intro. While the track itself has that pounding beat, so does the editing and it's incredibly jarring. It reminds me of an old guy trying to get in the mindset of a young person by acting and talking fast so the hyperactive camera is a result of a "this is what the kids want" mentality. Like most DVD's, the lead singer Chris Martin tends to get the most attention. A talent yes but other band members get very quick shots before going back to Chris. At one point I almost thought I saw band member to Chris to band member to Chris rather than switching between the 4 of them.
It would've been nicer if they waited till X&Y came out so we can get Square One, Speed of Sound and Fix You live but that's alright. Knowing the record company, we'll get another one soon.

Excellent Interpretations.......2007-01-19
While another reviewer has castigated this album by describing what it is not (i.e. a Steve Hackett album), I hope listeners will realize what it is: a uniquely executed interpretation of Genesis music performed by an individual who has intimate knowledge of it. (Stuermer has in concerts faithfully played to Genesis fans the guitar riffs as presented to him without seeking to seize for himself a place within the band or supplant the members for whom he stands in.) I hope others will refrain from judging Stuermer for who he isn't, and I hope that they too hear beautifully rendered glosses on the music of a long-lived band (a band performing long after SH's departure, and even welcoming him back [with Peter Gabriel]). While I do share the afore mentioned reviewers love of Steve Hackett's musicianship (owning all of his solo materials [some in remastered editions]), I also appreciate Stuemer's own treatment of the music he's shared in playing. So I apologize to DS for mentioning others in this review of his work, and encourage others to add his album to their Genesis-related collections as well.
great guitarist.......2005-09-28
well while I have not listened to this album, I know from listening to his stuff with phil, and live with genesis, he is on the same level as hackett, plus he has the jazz, and fusion background that hackett does not, and alot can be accounted for fusion, and jazz is more groove oriented stuff, with alot of chops, and stretching out just like prog rock, but really I love both players styles, but daryl can speed pick anything as fast as hackett, and he writes great songs, look at huis work with phil collins, you can say what you want about pop music and laugh it up about how cheesy it is, when your attitude is cheesy, songs about life and love have a place, and phils music incorporates more styles than one, if you you think this music of 80's genesis, or phils solo stuff well check the sales, the quality of the production, and the well crafted songs, its bolagna you think only heavy music is great, your opinion your intitled to but throwing well structured music into the sucks category, you better wake up and realize the garbage fast food commercial of today compared to the 80's is a large difference, the musicians, and singers are average, they choose to be, or in the case do not have the talents to sing, but can shake there but well, or dress sleazey, and [...] around with men, and women, i am sick of hearing that anything but one style of artist, or music sucks, go get an education in music, study other artists, and music forms your comments about daryl, phil, and 80's genesis, is baseless, and corny, what session are you playing on, have you had any success selling albums, playing before tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, have you studied music theory well, and can really say steurmer sucks, well then your ear, and mind must reek of hypocrisy, long live great musicians like steve hackett, and daryl steurmer, and great session artists from l.a, and new york like steve gadd, jimmy johnson (bass), michael landau (guitar), dann huff (guitar), abe laboriel sr ( bass), vinnie colaiuta (drums), steve taviglione ( sax) walt fowler (trumpet), and more also world session players, old and new classic jazz, and fusion, prog rock, miles davis, frank zappa, and many others!!!
Exceeded Expectations.......2005-07-11
Order was filled and processed so rapidly, that gratification was indeed instant. Five-plus star rating!
Happy-Happy, Joy-Joy, Regards, Lou
Another side of who?.......2004-07-17
Daryl is not a great guitar player and will never add up to Steve Hackett. Daryl picked all the stupid songs to play to. Avoid this cd and Get Steve Hackett's "Genesis Revisited". Steve Hackett is a WRITTER, a professional player and a true Genesis member that sayed to the true Genesis sound; while, all this guy did was strum strings for the Phil Collins band.
Excellent covers of classic Genesis music.......2004-07-09
The previous review not withstanding, this collection is an excellent collection of instrumental covers from Genesis at their commercial peak. Yeh, all Daryl did was play the guitar for them on tour...but boy can he play! I love genesis and I love this smooth jazzy mix of music that I already love. The tracks however do not lose their rock edge. Smart move, Daryl. An excellent, and may I say respectful, tribute album. This album continues to be one of my top cd's. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys both Genesis and smooth jazz.

Still available on BillyNeyer.com!.......2006-01-13
I'd just like to chime in and say that this is an incredible film and album, and both are still available on billynayer.com - don't pay the crazy scalper prices here!
A great soundtrack to a great film.......2001-12-20
The American Astronaut is one of the most imaginative, hilarious, disturbing and beautiful films to come out of the independent cinema in a long time. Essentially a children's story/allegorical tale of sons and fathers disguised as a space noir musical, it has a truly surreal, absurd sense of humor, great production design and spectacular B&W cinematography that demonstrates how much can be done with an extremely small budget, plus great music and lyrics by The Billy Nayer Show that twist, torque and tear apart all kinds of musical genres: rock, punk, country, sci-fi movie cliches, ballads and show tunes. So far the movie has only received a limited release and it's so different I don't think you'll be seeing it at the cineplex anytime soon, so buy this soundtrack now and hear for yourself what a weirdly great or greatly weird movie this is. My one petty criticism of the soundtrack is that it doesn't include the Rio Yeti song or the Hertz Donut routine (how about a cd single?). Six out of five stars.
Wacky soundtrack to a space western musical.......2001-12-12
This CD features the soundtrack to The American Astronaut - a low budget, yet excellently executed movie about space travel, kidnapping, murder, friendship, birthdays, and girls with glass vaginas. Some of the members of The Billy Nayer Show act in the movie and provide musical numbers, hence allowing for a totally wacky, if not disturbing, musical effect.
From country through bluegrass, from rock to slow sad songs, TBNS provides a huge spectrum of music able to satisfy any music lovers as long as they possess any good music taste at all.
I recommend this CD as well as the movie to only open-minded people, otherwise you might not appreciate it to the extent it deserves.
PS. I ranked the movie #1 for 2001 on my list of best movies.
The Soundtrack to a Musical Space Western, & O So Much More!.......2001-12-01
There is a fine line between madness and genius. Cory McAbee not only toes this line, but becomes an inspired dervish upon it. His band, Billy Nayer Show provides not only an accompaniment, but also a driving force to his vocalized dance.
American Astronaut is the consummate Billy Nayer Show album, demonstrating both the maturity of a band over a decade in the making, and the consistantly unorthodox musical vision that has made them a growing cult favorite in Manhattan, San Francisco, and abroad.
Although their music defies conventional explanation (Often the simplest way to do so for my friends is to apply to the ears directly), perhaps this formula will suffice:
Imagine a pop-tune's sticks-to-the-grey-matter type ditty playing in the background, whilst a melodious could've-been-a-bluesman's deep voice (in the case of McAbee) belts out rhythmically rhyming lines, the lyrics of which would make Frank Zappa proud (or blush). This is a glimpse into "The Girl With the V...", only one of the spirited numbers on the album.
If you are searching for something new, something to shake you at your music-loving foundations, something to renew your faith in the music scene, you have found your album. If you enjoy the album, you might also be entertained by the Sundance award-winning film- find out where it is playing, and see it. Better yet, see Billy Nayer Show play in person. (...)
I write these words with much reverence and affection for this band, and I hope I have done their music justice.

Think of Big Bill Broonzy as Leadbelly with sharper teeth. Like the seminal Texas strummer, Broonzy worked in the songster tradition, using guitar purely as accompaniment to his storytelling rather than a means of virtuosic expression. But Broonzy's political lyrics--especially the famed color-line critique "Black, Brown, and White," with its warning "if you're black, get back"--are more direct. So are his onstage observations about racism and poverty in America in the two just-unveiled concerts on this two-disc set. As the liner notes explain, gin and the warmth of Broonzy's audience loosened the native Mississippian's lips on these nights. Nonetheless, his openhearted delivery of originals like "Just a Dream," later covered by his disciple Muddy Waters, and the standard repertoire of the early folk-blues era ("Midnight Special," Leroy Carr's "When the Sun Goes Down") is on the mark. An improvised stab at "Guitar Rag" and a "Happy Birthday" to a new acquaintance testify to the informality of these sets. They also lend breadth to a rare self-portrait of this highly influential bluesman as an inspired entertainer. --Ted Drozdowski

You wouldn't expect music that has been languishing unheard in the vaults for more than a half century to sound this clear and vital, as if it were recorded yesterday. Though Big Bill Broonzy was a seminal figure in the progression of the blues from the Mississippi delta to the south side of Chicago, his repertoire encompassed everything from folk songs to spirituals to (at one of these concerts at least) "Happy Birthday." During a period when the blues was mainly marketed as "race records" back home, Broonzy served as an international ambassador for the music, as shown by the enthusiastic responses to the ebullient performer at these Amsterdam concerts. Cancer would claim him just five years after this European tour, but this two-disc live set finds him in fine voice and engaging manner (some of the between-song patter lasts longer than the songs themselves). He makes "John Henry" and "Down by the Riverside" seem more like living history than museum pieces, with his version of (and introduction to) Bessie Smith's "Back-Water Blues" sounding all the more timely in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. --Don McLeese

The Dvd Begins with a Long Jam from Taylor's Backing Band that is truly pointless and tiring...Utilize the Menu option and begin with Cut #2, and You will witness a stirring Live Performance, Outstanding Camera Work and many upclose views of Johnnie Taylor in impassioned Vocalization, Sweat pouring off His Face, Dirty Southern Soul/R&B at its Finest. A few Hits juxtaposed by some Excellent Blues, and a Fine Duet with Cute Daughter Tasha Taylor. I attended Taylor's Longhorn Ballroom Concert in 1996, 15 Months prior to this One, I had hoped this DVD was from THAT Show, but This one was probably better (The Show I went to had Taylor Cursing a mildly unruly crowd ("Sit Your Black Ass Down!"), and threatening to leave early, which He did, for about 10 minutes during "Cheaper to Keep Her", before returning)...Excellent Vocal phrasing, as usual, lots of quick Camera Pans that Work seamlessly to give the Viewer the feeling He is actually THERE...I Generally Disdain Live Concert Videos, but this One is Thumbs Up!!!

I would've given this DVD a 5 star rating but the DVD begins with the introduction of Johnnie Taylor's band performing 25 minutes before Johnie Taylor walks out on stage. That's my only negative about the DVD.
Although Johnnie does stay on stage for an hour performing songs like 'Who's Makin' Love", "Last Two Dollars", "Sending you a Kiss", "Good Love", "Disco Lady" etc. He even does a duet with his Daughter "Tasha" singing "Ain't That Lovin' You".
This DVD was recorded in 1997 when Johnnie was touring off the "Good Love" CD which was the highlight of Johnnie Taylor career at Malaco.
We all know that the "Good Love' CD is indeed a classic so you won't go wrong picking up this DVD seeing a legend at his finest.
At the end of this DVD Malaco Records honor him and give tribute to his passing on May 31, 2000.
