Who would have thought that Duncan Sheik would succeed where Paul Simon and Randy Newman failed, successfully transitioning from the pop-rock world to the Broadway stage? With Spring Awakening, Sheik and book writer/lyricist Steven Slater (who had already worked on Sheik's 2001 album Phantom Moon) have created a thoroughly exciting show that incorporates a contemporary art-indie idiom (including a small rock band instead of an orchestra) into a dramatic musical-theater context. The unlikely setting is that of a Frank Wedekind adaptation, but as it turns out, teenage angst is perennial, whether it's in contemporary America or in a 1891 German boarding school. Songs such as "The Bitch of Living" ("with nothing going on, asking just what went wrong"), "The Word of Your Body," "I Don't Do Sadness," and "Totally Fucked" ("You're fucked if you speak your mind and you know you will") resonate with the rage, frustration, confusion, excitement, joy, anger, and of course budding lust of those hormone-driven years. The show is greatly enhanced by its youthful cast members (they're all pretty close in age to their characters), who sing their hearts out. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Decca Broadway presents the cast recording for the acclaimed new Broadway production, SPRING AWAKENING. Written by pop music composer Duncan Sheik and playwright/lyricist Steven Sater, the musical explores emotional earthquakes in the lives of teenagers.

SPRING AWAKENING is based on Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 drama, which was scandalous in its day for addressing sex violence and suicide. The story, dialogue and costumes suggest the 19th Century, and are perfectly wedded to a beautiful alternative pop music score by Grammy® nominated singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik. The creative team also includes Tony® Award Winning director Michael Mayer (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and legendary choreographer Bill T. Jones.

5 out of 5 stars For those who hate musicals..........2007-07-07

This is the rare Broadway soundtrack that lives off the stage as well as on. For those who are not fond of stilted show tunes, this soundtrack rocks! I can't stop listening to it, and I'm sure you will find the same true for you as well. The show was magnificent-totally deserving of its recent Best Musical Tony win. The soundtrack is a wonderful memento-Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Spring Awakening Rocks!.......2007-07-03

I was lucky enough to see Spring Awakening on Broadway over Memorial Day Weekend (a week before they won all their Tony awards). This show is awesome. And the soundtrack lets me relive the excitemen on my boring commute to work!

4 out of 5 stars I like it, really I do.......2007-06-29

The hype around Spring Awakening grew fast and over the top. Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater have made a beautiful show possible but the fact that its trying to be new in an old fashioned way is a tad over rated. I like the music and lyrics but think the story might be slightly lacking. It's poetic without being overly sensitive which satisfies me greatly. However if you are Broadway Theatre person you might not necessarily enjoy the music and show. I find this show good for releasing some pent up anger and sadness but I feel as for a Broadway show its highly lacking. Although it is the show for this decade, I mean for the teens and young adults it is definitely not the new RENT.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2007-06-29

I am not a usual Broadway soundtrack listener but this recording has changed my opinion.
I can see now why this show is successful. The combination of passion play and rock and roll; parallel time study of past and present mediums.

Buy this product. I had mediocre expectations and, now, it never leaves my car CD or my mind.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting New Score.......2007-06-15

This score is great. Could anyone make a reasonable case that the music is not beautiful? It's unlikely. Two things are troublesome.

1. Why go to the trouble of stating that the time is 1890s Germany. Why costume it that way. Why have the dialogue be stilted so as to identify a time-not-our-own. And then go and mention stereos and calls not being returned. It's just sloppy. If the creators are not going to follow the internal logic of the rules they set themselves, then it's just amateurish. And that's incredibly disappointing because the score is so beautiful. If God is in the details, then there's no God here.

2. The comment in the liner notes about the songs expressing interior monologues. Can it be that Mr. Sheik and Mr. Sater didn't recognize this convention which has been in place for hundreds of years. Again, Mr. Sater went to the trouble of mentioning this in the liner notes. What is he trying to say? That he invented this idea. No one (at least I hope no one) is suggesting that characters moving from dialogue to song is in any way what happens in real life. It's understood that the music expresses emotion and yes, interior monologues, more than simple dialogue could ever hope to do. Is it that so many people share Mr. Sheik's thought that characters could just as easily say what they normally sing that musical theater and opera aren't more popular? Plenty of playwrights use soliloquy rather than song to express interior monologue. Personally, I'd rather hear Duncan Sheik's musical expression than a soliloquy any day of the week. How would he feel if someone leveled the same criticism against SPRING AWAKENING that he made against musical theater in general.

Other than these small things which don't really detract from my enjoyment of the music, it's fantastic. The ensemble writing is amazing. The harmonies are glorious.

If this is a first effort, I look forward to their masterpiece.

If you like your Wagner served up in bleeding chunks or if you're simply in a hurry to hear the tunes, then this compilation is for you. The performances, drawn from the Polygram (mainly Deutsche Grammophon) back catalog, are for the most part authoritative. They feature the likes of Herbert von Karajan, with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Karl Böhm, with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (and chorus), in extracts from recordings of complete operas, and conductors Giuseppe Sinopoli, Otto Gerdes, and Antal Doráti in some of the more familiar overtures and preludes. Singing, without which it is impossible to get the full flavor of Wagner's work, is skirted whenever possible: this is an unapologetic tribute to Wagner the orchestral genius. At times the salesmanship is a little overblown--the glitzy packaging includes a cover shot of the helicopters from Apocalypse Now--and the sound, some of it from very good originals, seems to have been juiced with a little added digital reverb, resulting in an overall glassiness. The gaps between tracks are minimized, disco style, so there's no dead air, and the whole thing has an Entertainment Tonight feel to it. Were he around, Wagner would have screamed bloody murder, then happily taken his cut of the action. For today's on-the-go listener, this may well be the most practical way to enjoy Wagner's music, but we won't be happy until it motivates at least one newcomer to seek out a recording of a complete opera. Anyone who does that will find out what "apocalypse" really means. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection!.......2007-01-10

This is a great collection of some of Wagner's most memorable songs for those of you who do not want to buy the whole opera's for some of his works.

4 out of 5 stars Helicopters? Marines?.......2006-12-05

Do those infotainment marketing mavens ever get it right? Talk about Hollywood disconnect! Not only are the helicopters irrelevant, but to quote from the gushy drivel on the jacket, "The gripping power of Richard Wagner's music was demonstrated with spectacular effect in...Apocalpse Now, when the "Ride of the Valkyries' became synonymous with the chilling journey of Marine 'Huey' helicopters into battle..."

Marine? Marine? Them Hueys in the movie was ARMY Air Cav, slick! "First of the ninth--air mobile." If you're going to dally down that primrose path, at least get it right.

Better yet, drop the choppers. Most people who listen to Wagner probably realize that quality of an artistic work has a mystically inverse relationship to the number of helicopters contained in it.

As for the music, it is good, but the operatic equivalent of sound bites, which may be just right for people who are new to Wagner or just can't take very much of him. Hmm...perfect for a helicopter ride, perhaps?

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to my music collection.......2006-07-20

This CD takes the place of all my other Wagner music. VERY well done. Somehow I didn't realize that there were two cds in the package--what a pleasant surprise! Of the two cds, I like the first one best, but they are both good. I listen to this cd daily on my way to work. Stirring! I am so glad that I purchased this. Some purists might have a problem with the fact that some of the selections are not there in their entirety. I have no problem with that though. I recommend this to anyone who loves Wagner.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Wagner.......2006-05-15

Okay, so I like Wagner. I LOVE "Ride Of The Valkyries". Do I want to go out and buy every single stinkin thing Wagner did? No. If you are a die-hard Wagner fan you probably will not think much of this collection.

But if you like Wagner and appreciate "Ride Of The Valkyries", and maybe require it in just a little more substance than what is included in "Apocolypse Now Redux", then this is what you want. The extra tracks are bonuses and are quite good. Meets my needs, presentation great, performance excellent. I recommend it for anyone that needs a Wagner fix.

Khachaturian's popular ballet scores benefit from his vigorous leadership and the surprisingly idiomatic playing of the Vienna Philharmonic. All the favorite crowd-pleasers are here, including the Sabre Dance. This pairing of ballet suites was a demonstration disc back in LP days and the engineering is still impressive. For those not on Khachaturian's wave length (he does skate perilously close to kitschy vulgarism), the generous filler is a delight--Ansermet's dynamic account of Glazunov's ballet. Its four movements depict the four seasons in an idiom flavored by Tchaikovsky and Glazunov's teacher, Rimsky-Korsakov, and the music's all the more fetching for it. Ansermet sometimes could be a bit too sedate, and his orchestra was never a world-class group, but his conducting is nothing short of vivacious here, and the orchestra, captured in vivid sound, is with him all the way. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spartacus/Khachaturian.......2007-01-10

Portions of this work were used in the BBC Oneden Line in the 1980s. The title had me baffled for years until I checked the reviews. I was surprised and extremely pleased to have the entire version.

3 out of 5 stars Poor digitalization.......2007-01-05

How nostalgic to can hear 33 1/3 rpm vinyl scratches between the selections! Also, I hear some gurgling that sounds as if a cassette tape is running through dirty heads. This is the only digitally transferred CD on which I've ever heard either of these annoyances.

5 out of 5 stars flamboyant readings of Khachaturian!.......2005-10-31

This CD is really a treasure! Khachaturian's brilliant ballet scores played amazing by Wiener Philharmoniker, under the baton of the composer!

It is a little surprising that, Wiener Philharmoniker plays generally Austro-German musics, from Haydn to Mahler and Alban Berg. But they are very good in these virtuosic orchestral scores. For example, Sabre Dance is whirling, excellent! I like especially the dances "Lezghinka" which a very fast dance of Caucasian-Musluman people and the "Gopak" which starts slow and gradually go faster and faster and finishes in a hysteric tempo! There is a beautiful slow movement, "Adagio" which you can remember form the film 2001: A Space Odyseyy.

At this price and at this sound quality, you can not go wrong with this legendary recording of 1962 by Khachaturian.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Vivid performances!.......2005-04-25

The serene and exotic lyricism of this notable work has never been exhibited with so eloquence and majesty ever before. This adagio of Spartacus and Phygia's passionate performance is imbued of profane exoticism, radiant sensuality and suggested eroticism. As you know the string and winds section of the Vienna were in that decade one of the most remarkable around the world. The variation of Aegina and Bacchanalia is loaded with admirable acrobatic fierceness. Scene and dance with crotaria is simply outstanding. Kachaturian as director maintained the rigorous balance, and the muscle never shatters the expression musical. The last section Dance of Gaditane and Spartacus' victory is extremely interesting, the bass clarinet makes a rapture filigree work, anticipating the tragic ending. The whole orchestra will emerge creating a real homage to Dionysisus and surrounding the hall with that Balkan wildness.

The Gayaneh suite begins with the super known Sabre Dance, an admirable exercise of portentous sound and exhibition of high caliber pyrotechnic. The tragic and premonitory omen waltz is almost a perpetuum mobile that strikes the main melody in Aysheh's awakening and dance. In Lezghinka we have to admit the superior histamine doses given by Tekjnavorian . It' s worthy but it is not even closer to incandescence and febrile spirit demanded: I found it weak, lack of the required emotion. In the case of Gayaneh's adagio so well known for the great audiences since Kubrick 's 2001 Odyssey we have to recognize it' s simply great, serene, persuasive, intimate with admirable fond. Hopak is excellent too, reflecting the joy of living so characteristic o this slave country.

Ansermet' s Seasons is splendid though I rather choose the Albert Wolff's performance of the fifties.

And just as historical reference, it is a must for you to acquire this golden recording. Excellent sound edition.

5 out of 5 stars Hudsucker Proxy.......2003-11-11

For a number of years, I've been under the impression that the "Adagio of Spartacus" was simply called "The Hudsucker Proxy Theme." Now I know that where I have been giving credit to Carter Burwell and the Hudsucker Proxy soundtrack, I should have been giving credit to this album - it has both the Adagio of Spartacus and the Sabre Dance - the two best songs from the Hudsucker Proxy, in their original forms. If you are a fan of Hudsucker, BUY THIS ALBUM!

Jai Uttal was on the bleeding edge of the chant curve. He started singing kirtan in the 1980s and has been incorporating it into his music to such a degree that it's now his primary musical vehicle. And in a way, that's a shame. Uttal is possessed of a warm, slightly weathered, and impassioned voice that he wraps around serpentine melodies. But because of that, we don't get to hear much of his instrumental side. That's partly remedied on this CD, which is something of a follow-up to Music for Yoga and Other Joys. Taking what was originally a backing track for an instructional meditation CD, Uttal has, with one tragic exception, stripped away the speaking voice, and reconfigured the music into a meditation in sound. There's plenty of Uttal's chanting, but it's all wrapped in the swirling electronic ambiences and slow-trance grooves of Ben Leinbach, the bansuri flute of Manose, and Daniel Paul's tablas. Instead of chanting, Uttal weaves seductive Robert Fripp-like e-bow guitar lines and dotar improvisations. Tracks like "Bija Mantras" and "Radiance" are as epic as a meditative song can get, although the effect is ruined at the end of "Radiance" by a spoken-word segment that's strictly for the converted. Except for that, Loveland: Music for Dreaming and Awakening is a definitive deep-space meditation CD. --John Diliberto

This CD carries me to another place, a place of beauty and radiance and gratitude and gentle bliss. Meditating to this music is ethereal. 4 out of 5 stars Definitely worth picking up.......2006-10-10

I just became aware of the band recently and picked up this album. Honestly, they could pass as a Sabbath cover band pretty easily. The vocals are almost dead-on Ozzy with a bit more of a "grrunt" sound. That being said - they do it extremly well. This album is full of hooks - and that's what won me over. The songs get stuck in your head. Definitely worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars COULD HAVE BEEN A CLASSIC SABBATH ALBUM.......2006-04-28

I ordered this album online after getting the recommendation, and listing to some of the online sample tracks. The riffs, and particularly, the vocals are eerily reminiscant of classic Ozzy Sabbath, fitting between the "Technical Ecstasy" and "Never Say Die" releases, and actually, much better than both. Any fan of classic late-era Ozzy Sabbath and Deep Purple should give this disc a listen.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta have more cowbell!.......2006-01-24

I love this sound!

It is a nice amalgam of Sabbath and early Monster Magnet.

Is it the most origional thing in the world? No.

But it is very good at what it is and it totally fit the
bill for what i wanted to hear.

If you like BLS, or other rather anthemy style metal,
with cool vocals, good hooks and a liberal dose of cowbell
then snap it up!

If you hate bands that sound a little like Sabbath,
Motorhead, or very early Kiss, stay away from this.

Better than Circus of Power, better than Whitchfinder General
and better than the last Ozzy Record :-)

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Rock is alive, and kicking.......2005-12-25

At a time when the great rock bands are starting to show their age, and all the newer bands are caught up in the "Music Industries deathtrap"; a glimmer of light has appeared on the horizon.

If you're looking for the emotional power ballads, and pretty boy front men, go see if Poison has put out another greatest hits album. This isn't for you.

However, if your idea of music is jacking up the volume, and having your teeth blasted down your throat by a band that rocks with a vengeance, welcome home.

I can't remember hearing a new band with such an in your face, solid rock delivery since the earlier days of Motorhead. If you're a serious rock fan, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars worth buying.......2005-08-30

The samples given don't do the actual CD justice. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Better than I expected!.......2005-07-14

I bought this cd for my morning meditations and it's better than I expected! I love every chant on the cd. It's made my meditations feel much more spiritual and I actually meditated for longer! Would definitely buy again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!.......2005-03-09

This CD deserves more than 5 stars! I have never listened to a piece of music that was so able to instantly elevate my consciousness. It is beautiful to just listen to and pure ecstasy to chant along with. HIGHLY recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2003-09-06

More middle eastern sounding than the eastern that I was expecting - absolutely lovely. The music evolves and changes through the chakras, the human voices are more like an instrument being played. It really has a mesmorizing effect. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Vibrate with the sounds of your body/spirit connection........2000-01-17

To be in tune with the body and spirit requires a great deal of processing of the human psyche. Sounds play a key role in allowing the human mind to delve into parts of the unkown self. This CD provides the vibrational element to link your connection to all parts of self. The sounds and words of pure essence, have been researched to lock into the key points of the body. Meditate, chant, yoga, breath work, dancing, etc. all can be used with this CD. I have used the chants of the first song to fine tune my essence. I danced to the 2nd song to intergrate my body, mind and spirit. The 3rd song feels like the manifestation of the process of my intergration. I hope you will discover as much as I have with this CD.

Rec-room rock stars can rejoice knowing that drum and guitar solos, long thought extinct in the post-grunge era, are alive, well, and flourishing in the hands of speed-metal granddaddies Megadeth. Seriously, Rude Awakening, the band's first-ever live set, is almost certain to benefit from renewed interest sparked by the reissue of their spruced-up debut, Killing Is My Business. . . and Business Is Good. That album, like most in Megadeth's canon, is quoted here ("Mechanix"). The band also revisits So Far, So Good. . . So What ("Hook in Mouth"), Peace Sells. . . But Who's Buying ("Peace Sells"), The World Needs a Hero ("Return to Hangar"), Countdown to Extinction ("Symphony of Destruction," "Sweating Bullets"), Youthanasia ("Train of Consequences"), Rust in Peace ("Hangar 18"), and Cryptic Writings ("Almost Honest"). Fanned across two discs, Rude Awakening's 24 tracks capture Dave Mustaine and cohorts in top form--lightning fast, muscular, nihilistic, urgent, and, of course, very, very angry--with crowd noise kept to a bearable minimum. --Kim Hughes

4 out of 5 stars A great deal, but there are a couple things to complain about.......2006-02-05

Before I get into this review, let me say you are getting a great deal for what you pay. 2 discs full of (well, partially full of) classic Megadeth. This cd has great sound quality and a few cool places in between songs where Dave talks, however brief they may be. It is also cool how the two new guys step up and deliver all the classics with the same power as the Marty and Menza.

Now some of the bad things. The songs selection is just ok in my opinion. They play a lot off of The World Needs a Hero, which is understandable considering thats what they're touring. It's actually a very good album, but I thought they chose a lot of the wrong ones. Burning Bridges and 1000 Times Goodbye really aren't special. Off of Cryptic Writings they take Trust, She-Wolf, and Almost Honest. ALmost Honest should not be on here, and on the other two Mustaine has a little vocal trouble, he just sounds off. She Wolf does have sweet guitar and drum solos at the end though, making it well worth listening to. Other than A Tout Le Monde, it seems like Mustaine also has trouble singing the tracks from Youthanasia too. During Train of Consequences he forgets the words and mumbles.

Some of the best tracks include Hangar 18, Return to Hangar, Mechanix, Dread and the Fugitive Mind, and everything off Peace Sells. The best track though, which surprised me, is Hook In Mouth hands down. It is performed just like it is on the album.
Once again, this is a great deal for what you're paying, and though there are a few lyrical mess-ups, it's the only live Megadeth CD out there, and therefore a must have for any Deth fan.

One other thing. There's a half-cd/half-dvd version. Don't buy it. You lose half the songs when you can really just go pick this and the full length DVD up seperately for a better price.

5 out of 5 stars Great live album.....but where's the countdown?.......2005-07-22

Megadeth's sound on this live album was superb, and included much of their best work........but where is "Countdown to Extinction"? That's my favorite MD song!

5 out of 5 stars Rude Awakening.......2004-12-14

This is a great cd or dvd for any megadeth fan. It gives you a little taste of Megadeth Live! Must get for any hard rock fan!

4 out of 5 stars Mustaine Not Mellow Live Either.......2004-02-26

This double live album and apparent send off for one of thrash metal's giants shows why they should be(and usually are)respected as true metal stalwarts. Leader Dave Mustaine's fiery tongue and trademark riffing are on full display in too numerous places to mention. Newer songs like "Dread..." and "Return To Hangar" sound just as menacing and accusatory as older chesnuts like "Mechanix" and the band's long time credo "Peace Sells." Lead guitarist Al Pitrelli adds his own spark while reproducing the classic lines of "Wake Up Dead" and "Ashes..." The musicianship and mind of Mustaine is stellar and still full of life after 20 long years and this disc shows that. While his band may never have reached the pinnacle of popularity Metallica enjoyed, that in no way makes Megadeth any less important. And I'm sure Dave would be the first to tell you.

5 out of 5 stars wow, enfin un album live pour MEGADETH.......2003-08-25

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!!.......2007-04-16

Track 11, I Cant Give It Up, is completely hot. The rest of the album is great as well and its still Christian-oriented which I respect her for. If you get this album, get it FOR this song. *faint*

5 out of 5 stars Where's God?.......2007-02-05

When you 1st listen, it's quite pleasing to the ear. It's obvious she's writing from her heart and singing with all her might. She's an amazing singer. It's just, where's God?

There's not one song that mentions God's name. Most of the songs are revolved around boys, which just makes it sound completely secular. I have no doubt that she's a Christian, but compared to her 1st two cd's, it has no Godly lyrics. Morally correct, yes. But Godly, no.

It's more--- soul and r&b. Which I completely love! The beat's awesome, and her voice is just music to my ears.

I am a bit disappointed to find God wasn't in this album, but if you're not concerned with that, it's one of the best cds.

I'll include the listing of the songs and my rating:

1. So Simple - 8/10
2. I'm Not Missing You - 10/10
3. Dream You - 6/10
4. Easy To Luv You - 6/10
5. Save Me - 7/10
6. Take Me Away 9/10
7. Babygirl 10/10
8. Wait 9/10
9. Is It Me 8.5/10
10. Don't Ask Me To Stay 10/10
11. I Can't Give It Up 6/10
12. Beautiful Awakening 10/10

The last song is beautiful. The first time I heard it, I shook my head and skipped over it each time I listened to the cd. But then I listened to it, and it was great! It grows on you. It's beautiful.

This cd is what it's called. A Beautiful Awakening.

4 out of 5 stars Mature, Good Vocals... But A Bit Too Secular.......2007-01-11

It's been 31/2 years, but Stacie hasn't lost her charm. More mature and more of an R&B feel than a pop one, Beautiful Awakening lives up true to it's name. From the opening note to the beautiful "So Simple", you're just sure that it's an angel singing. The music, the vocals and the lyrics are just amazing on this song! "True to life/True to me/Absolutely free/So simple, so simple, so simple, yeah". The album's first single is next, titled "I'm Not Missing You" is almost like an R&B "Stuck" from her sophomore album. With good vocals and a beautiful medley, especially the piano, "I'm Not Missing You" is a definite winner. The album continues it's R&B feel with "Dream You", "Easy to Luv U" and "Save Me". The next track, "Take Me Away" proves that this young singer may have gone a bit in over her head. The lyrics show a little too much emotion, "From your kiss/To your touch/Got me needin' it so much/Boy I got a crush". The song "Babygirl" is a touching anthem for single mothers. With a soft medley and good lyrics like, "Babygirl, take it one day at a time/Everything will be alright". "Wait" follows up and can be compared to even Christina Aguilera, with amazingling strong vocals and great beat, "Wait" should be the album's second single for US. The upbeat "Is It Me" and "Don't Ask Me 2 Stay" are probably the only two on the album that could be considered pop. "I Can't Give It Up", like "Take Me Away" shows just too much emotion for a Christian song. The album closer "Beautiful Awakening" is a soft, R&B song that brings the album to a soft landing. The Japanese Bonus Tracks "Frustrated" and "Brush 'Em Off" are both strong songs that have a good medley and lyrics like "And I get so tired of them talking about me/Everybody's in my business/They trippin' me, they dog me/They just wanna use me, confuse me, they call me/But I just brush 'em off me". As for the UK/Europe/Australia Bonus Track "Addictive" continues with the emotion, love and mushy gushy lyrics like "I don't need no coffee/Don't need no cigarettes/Don't want nothing at all/Cause boy you're my addiction". The Wal-Mart Exclusive track "Tantrum" is the best of any of the bonus tracks and is a strong song that has great vocals and good vocals like: "I have the heart of a child/And my mind's like it's mother/Trys to tell it what's right/But it just won't bother/It just keeps kicking and screaming... My heart throws a tantrum". Overall, Beautiful Awakening is a mature, strong album that is sure to do well with the secular crowd, but might keep the Christian one confused. Sometimes you just can't get two birds with one stone and that's the way it goes.

4 out of 5 stars Won me over with "I'm Not Missing You"........2006-11-24

Dare I say it? I caved and bought this album because I was hooked on the music video of "I'm Not Missing You". Normally, I don't bother spending money on pop albums because you usually just get one or two good songs off them; the rest are just fillers, completely forgettable material. Most of the albums that I buy these days are trip-hop or new-soul jazz stuff. I can safely say that I probably haven't bought a pop album for at least five years.

So why the sudden splurge on Stacie Orrico? I'm a believer in giving an artist due credit. If I think that even just one song was able to reach me, it's worth the price of the whole album. "I'm Not Missing You" has well-written lyrics. The hook is stellar: "I'm not going through the motions, waiting and the hoping you call me/I'm not missing you/you might've had me open but I must be going because/I got life to do/I know I'm usually hanging on, I used to hate to see you gone/but this time it's different, I don't even feel the distance, I'm not missing you". It's got a catchy tune, and Stacie never misses a beat in her performance. Admittedly, the other songs on the album pale in comparison to "I'm Not Missing You". There are the usual completely forgettable songs ("Save Me", "I Can't Give It Up"). The lyrics of "I Can't Give It Up" in particular fall flat ("Now in this moment candles burnin oh, it's so easy/Got me compromising with my sexuality"). It's so blatantly obvious that it's about a girl who's trying to protect her virginity. There's not even a hit of poetry in the lyrics.

There are others that are somewhat catchy ("So Simple", "Easy To Luv You"). But if you're like me, and it's enough that you have one really great song, by all means get a copy. :)

4 out of 5 stars stacie orrico's 2006 album "beautiful awakening".......2006-11-09

I think that Stacie's album was pretty cool, but for those of you who are looking for songs more focused on life and less focused on guys, you'll be slightly disappointed. I loved her self-titled album "Stacie Orrico" because it was really well balanced, but this one has some more mature guy-related themes in the songs. One of the songs gets really intense in that area. However, the sound is cool and she has a good view of what she's singing about. So it's overall pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Ahmad Jamal, simply elegant.......2006-08-29

This is one of the best examples of "elegance" in the jazz piano trio genre. Jamal is lyrical and inspiring, always innovative. Great support on bass and drums, the CD is simply understated artistry on piano. The only thing that keeps this from 5 stars is the lack of clarity in some of the mid to high range of the re-mastering. Not at all bad, however, for an old recording. If you like to listen to sophisticated piano, this one's for you

5 out of 5 stars A unique take on the piano trio.......2005-11-24

I got into Jamal backwards, starting from his recent discs with the James Cammack/Idris Muhammad trio & working backwords. This one's from 1970, & already shows Jamal moving towards the maximalist style of his recent work. He's a "thematic" improvisor in a way that's not really in the mainstream of jazz, where improvisation tends to focus on developing new melodies out of the basic chords of a tune. Jamal's in the company of Thelonious Monk & Art Tatum in that he often simply plays the tune over & over, with the interest coming in the differences of decoration, emphasis, harmony, mood & tempo. These can be quite striking: witness for example the way that he stretches out "You're My Everything" here, & then when he launches into the solo he gives it a sour twist with some altered, minor-key chords. He's an underrated composer (here, two tunes, both of them the liveliest, funkiest moments on the album: "The Awakening" and "Patterns"); & he always picks interesting repertoire: Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" is given one of the few readings worthy of the original recording (I love Jamal's opening chorus, which is all dark bar-long chords), Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance", Emil Boyd's "I Love Music" (which is virtually a solo piece, with the bassist & drummer coming in just at the end; this is the only version of the tune I've heard outside of Joe Lovano's several recordings of it, & I think Jamal does a better job); Jobim's "Wave", not an obscure tune by any means but not one of the Jobim tunes that's been done to death either: Jamal gives it a dark 1970s funk intro with a little Baroque twist at one point. Above all, I like how Jamal (one of the first players to explore modal jazz) responds to the music of younger, modally-inclined musicians like Hancock & Tyner, & works it all back into his own idiosyncratic style. An excellent disc, one of my favourite of recent Impulse reissues. -- Now I just wish the other record companies would get around to reissuing Jamal's early stuff properly, rather than truncating the original releases of his 1950s work to squeeze it to CD-length......

5 out of 5 stars The Awakening - Ahmad Jamal.......2005-06-01

Ahmad Jamal's 1970 release of The Awakening is perhaps one of the most innovative West Coast jazz albums ever made by this man. Jamal is one of the most influential jazz pianists of the second half of the twentieth century, and has made his mark on both young and old people alike. He is, in many ways, like Keith Jarrett in his use of the entire range of the keyboard, which is clearly heard in all of the songs in this album. Featuring Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums, the trio really does work as a trio, each part being treat equally as opposed to a piano with a bass-drums accompaniment. The pieces on this album all have the Jamal feel, and yet, in a magical way, still retain the original style from Jobim's bossa nova tune, "Wave" or Hancock's standard, "Dolphin Dance". All the tracks on this album are beautifully written, and are a very thorough and accurate representation of Ahmad Jamal as we know him.

THE AWAKENING - The title track is a very upbeat, moderately-paced tune with a modern feel, written by Jamal himself. It is built off of a four-note phrase that changes constantly throughout the piece with wonderful blues type interludes. There are several times when Jamal uses some very clever scales and arpeggios that cover the entire keyboard within a second, and this piece left me astounded.

I LOVE MUSIC - This, in my opinion, is the best track no this CD, simply for its utter harmonic beauty. It has brought a tear to my eye more than once, and is very reminiscent of some of Ellington's later works. This song is basically a piano solo with a small interlude featuring the bass and drums, and has some of the most heart-wrenching chord changes I've ever heard. It is a sad, yet powerful song that can completely change one's mood, and is am excellent example of Jamal's ability to play with such commanding grace.

PATTERNS - A faster paced tune, this is a true Jamal song, and is very typical of Jamal's unique style. The bass and drums in this piece are particularly commendable, and keep the vibrant beat of the song moving throughout the entire piece.

DOLPHIN DANCE - One of Herbie Hancock's more romantically lyrical pieces, Jamal plays a sped up version as compared to the original. This is one of the better tracks on the album, and, once again, Jamal combines his own technique with that of Hancock's.

YOU'RE MY EVERYTHING - As the liner notes state, "The only old standard of the set, a 1931 ballad, introduced in a long forgotten revue called `The Laugh Parade', this became the title song for a 1949 movie in which Dan Dailey sang it. Jamal moves straight into the Harry Warren melody, playing it in a long meter. Despite the many ingenious melodic and rhythmic shifts with which he invests it, the original theme is never too far out of earshot" (Feather 8).

STOLEN MOMENTS - Oliver Nelson's classic is once again brought to life in a faster-paced version of this 1960's tune. Jamal grabs the essence of the spirit of the piece, drawing in the listener to listen even more carefully, as he uses dramatic chromatic chord changes, and once again coming back to the lovely primary theme at the end of the track.

WAVE - One of Antonio Carlos Jobim's more obscure works, Jamal, brings this piece out into the open with the definitive bossa nova feel "without any of the obvious Brazilian clichés" (Feather 8). The beckoning and delightful mood of this piece is rather catchy and is well appreciated by Latin and jazz fan alike.

Cannonball Adderley once said, "Ahmad's not like the average jazz musician who uses the pop tune as a vehicle. He approaches each number as a composition in itself, and tries to work out something particular for each tune that will fit it." This is a very true statement, and is obviously exemplified by the stunning work Jamal has created with these sole seven songs. I would highly recommend this music to all jazz fans of all kinds. His voluntary and authoritative use of combining the bass and drums (Nasser and Gant, I might add, are two musicians that are highly worthy of praise for their skills) provide the listener with a different feel to the music after listening. This album represents a specific feel and approach towards jazz, and is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. Ahmad Jamal is one of the greatest pianists of all time, and his unique approach should be exposed to the world to grasp a better understanding of what it means to be a great jazz musician.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Piano Trio.......2005-02-18

I was nearing home late one night 35 years ago, driving my father's big Oldsmobile and listening to Bill Ardis' great jazz program (Ardis Against The Night)on WHAM from Rochester,NY. The station's 50,000 watts carried well to my hometown near the Pennsylvania border. I was 20 yrs. old and had been listening to jazz for less than two years. I was also somewhat stoned. As I drove down my parent's street, Ardis said he had something special for his listeners -- Ahmad Jamal's just released new album "The Awakening", which he would play without interuption. It was some of the most incredible, subtle, and interesting music I had ever heard! I sat in the car in the driveway and listened, totally captivated, until it finished. It took a few weeks to finally locate a copy to buy, but I had to own that record. To this day it remains one of my top ten albums from all genres. The music is timeless. If you haven't heard it, buy it without delay. It will bring joy to your ears.

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Contrast In The Evolution Of Ahmad Jamal's .......2004-12-10

style from the fifties to 1970, the date of this recording. While still maintaining the Jamal "sound", his music has become denser and more adventurous.

There are two originals, another I had never heard, and four more familiar tunes. The title tune is built around a four note phrase that has a blues tinge with extensive changes in tempo and mood. The one I hadn't heard before, "I Love Music", is a beautiful composition showcasing Jamal's almost classical solo skills, using the rhythm section only for a change in tempo. The other original, "Patterns", moves along brightly and displays the talents of the trio as a group and in particular the bass work of Jamil Nasser.

The remaining four are very familiar to me with my favorite being Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments". The old standard, "You're My Everything", is done beautifully, probably more so because it certainly hasn't been recorded in recent years. Jobim's "Wave" and Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance" round out a varied program.

This will appeal to Ahmad Jamal fans or anyone who appreciates jazz piano, especially the trios.
