5 out of 5 stars Carolina!.......2007-01-24

It is truly a unique experience when you simply discover by chance a new artist or album that immediately hits you were you live and instantly fall in love with. Well for me Seu Jorge's debut solo album Carolina was just such an experience. I discovered it by chance simply browsing through the Brazilian CD section in Tower Records in NYC. At first the album's cover art (great) drew me in -- Seu Jorge holding a Siamese cat in a very interesting way! Luckily one could audition this featured display CD with nearby headphones and I gave it a listen. Wow. As the opening guitar and bass notes on the 1st track (Carolina) came on, I was hooked almost instantly on Seu Jorge's deep, sauve, expressive voice. This well produced album has groovy modern yet classically Brazilian melodies, rythyms, and arangements. As I skipped forward to the next track I heard, then the next, I liked each new cut I heard. I kept looking for a "bad" song but no, almost every new track I played sounded good to me which as you know is bloody rare. There are a half a dozen superb songs here. There may be a few cuts on "Carolina" I don't like as much as others but basically the entire album is great! This album quickly became one of my favorite recordings in my entire collection, as well it might become yours. My favorite tracks are: Carolina, Chega No Suinge, Mada, Manguiera, Te Queiria. Seu Jorge is a a fantastic new artist on the Brazilian scene who you owe it to yourself to discover.POSTSCRIPT: I had the chance to see Seu Jorge perform LIVE at a free outdoor concert in NYC's Central Park (Summer '06). Super cool Jorge was simply fantastic and rocked the house. He had a few thousand people on their feet dancing for about 2 hours. Great show!

5 out of 5 stars Take me to Brazil.......2006-11-16

When I first heard Seu Jorge in 2005, I was stunned by how suave he was. When I purchased CRU, I loved it so much I couldn't stop listening to it. When I saw him perform live in June 2006, and he did songs from Carolina I had not heard before, I knew I must have it. Now, most days, I listen to Carolina an CRU non-stop. In Chicago, Seu Jorge is THE man!

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, upbeat, and a little funky.......2006-09-13

I received Seu Jorge's debut album Carolina in the mail today and have been jammin' to the toe-tappin' rhythm and Jorge's raw yet sweet voice. I don't understand Portuguese, and you don't have to either in order to appreciate this great, must-have album. After all, it was Brazil's Album of the Year in 2002.

Mangueira is real funky, full of great samba sound. Put this album on with a few friends, mix up some tropical cocktails and savor one of Brazil's finest.

4 out of 5 stars Get your hands on this somehow...........2005-03-01

First off, "Carolina" is a really cool, fresh sound.

If you're like me, you came to find Seu Jorge on the Life Aquatic movie. Life Aquatic featured him in a slower, stripped-down acoustic format.

"Carolina", however, features upbeat, moving, happy songs. Lots of very danceable songs. He has such a great voice that you forget that it's all sung in Portuguese.

If you search around hard enough, you can probably find it somewhere else cheaper though. It's worth the import price though.

It's definitely highly recommended for fans of samba, world music, and just different/unique/cool music in general.

5 out of 5 stars Great Singer Great Album.......2004-02-26

I couldn't agree more with Amazon reviewer "Violetta". This is a great album by a very talented man. I found out about this album after seeing the movie that Seu Jorge starred in "Cidade de Deus" ("City of God" - where he played "Mané Galinha" aka "Handsome Ned"). After seeing the movie I bought the soundtrack which he sung the title song to ("Convite Para Vida"). I was so impressed that I thought I would give his album a try and it was well worth it! All his songs are funky and upbeat and very reminiscent of the funk/soul inspired sound of the 70's, with of course a modern twist to it. All the meanwhile he still stays true to his samba roots and is very proud to be Brazilian and showcases this well in his music. The title song "Carolina" is truly addictive! I can't stop playing it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lujon.......2006-05-23

Here is where the song "Lujon" (used last year to great effect) first appeared.

Mancini prided himself on his versatility and range. It is in full evidence here - and used as the soundtrack for a very forgettable TV series starring Ross Martin and John Vivyan (put those names in on Google and see what you get...).

Still, you gotta say that this was an amazing talent we had in Henry Mancini, and he is very much missed.

5 out of 5 stars Mancini For Lucky Listeners..........2003-12-26

What we have here is a beautifully packaged French reissue of two classic Mancini LP's. The first, 'Mr. Lucky' is the brilliant and quirky music from the TV series of the same name. 'Goes Latin' only gives the 'Latin' treatment to the theme from 'Mr. Lucky', then goes off in it's own direction. In my opinion, the 'Latin' half is the real treasure, and the reason to buy this version instead of the plain 'Mr. Lucky' soundtrack (available elsewhere by itself.)

Of course, 'Mr. Lucky' has great cuts like the main theme, 'March Of The Cue Balls', and 'Chime Time', not to mention the eerie, beautiful and stunning 'Floating Pad' and the pointillistically insane 'Tipsy.' The 'Goes Latin' half really gets into some sonic gorgeousness, the kind that Mancini is known for and does best! 'Lujon', for instance, has a haunting sweeping string melody with some very cool downward chord changes. I think it's one of Mancini's classic cuts. 'Blue Mantilla' is another slow weeper, equally remarkable. And of course there's also Mancini's playful side, represented by cuts such as 'Rain Drops In Rio' or 'No-Cal Sugar Loaf'( ! )

Really. every cut on here is worthwhile for Mancini fans, lounge fans, or film music fans. These 'two-fer' reissues are worth what you pay, not only for the plethora of wonderful songs you get, but for the painstakingly reproduced liner notes, detailed lists of all the musicians, etc. Two lost treasures brought back to light!

    1 out of 5 stars Disgusting!! If I Tried, I'd Do Better!!.......2006-11-11

I had heard a track or two of Mr. Capone-e's music before & I thought he had a little something. I also own the Zapp VI album & felt were Terry (Zapp) was going, so I wanted to see how he had evolved. Now I'm a huge Zapp & Roger fan and a fan of Chicano & Gangsta Rap, so naturally this is suppose to be the best of both worlds... how wrong I was.

Mr. Capone-e has no lyrical talent. His timing is off & his subject matter is that of a 15-year-old boy who thinks he's all gangsta & hard. He definitely puts a bad label on Mexicans, Chicanos, Latinos, & Hispanics all-together. I know he's probably done more & worse dirt than me, but he shouldn't be on the mic!!!!!!

a greater union of a Chicano & Zapp can be heard on the track: "SPECIAL" by BROWN BOY.

The only time I felt myself liking songs is when Terry came on them. He has great potential, but I can't figure out why he would agree to this. Times get tough, but you just gotta HOLD ON & keep ya head up!

I hope to see more of Zapp, but I will never do another stupid act such as buying both CDs at once.

Keep it real: A waste of time & money.

1 out of 5 stars New Age Hood.......2006-05-13

Thugs get killed and criminals go to jail. Tired of the glorification of abohhrent behavior in our youth. Roger Troutman was the heart of Zapp and I don't think he would approve of this typre of travesty. I don't care how "dope" the music and the hooks are if the message is straight from Hell. Nothing positive here.

If you like his music well guess what he basically pimped you cause this vato aint mexican this dude is Paki period. Im half pakistani and half mexican and it makes me mad why so much crap is written. Mexican cultura and pakistani culture is identical we share the same passions in life, come from warrior races and more importantly we are the same color. Mexicans need to realize that they are not the only brown skinned people in the world. While pakistanis need to realize what gringo america tells us about the chicanos is bs.im from both worlds and can tell you its the same.Ive scene mexicans that look pakistani and ive seen pakistani who look mexican. so this confirms we are connected. A black in jamica or a black from cuba is still black so why do you haterz try seperating us browns. Love our brown.

Look at us, a race that accepts our selves we ain't haters, we just players. don't try to tell us what we are and what we aren't. like i said we don't care (we tru Brown People) cuz we are da best, ya ain't nothing. except little putitos. and this isnt to offend any Pakistani-Mexican people or Pakistani this is just to those haters who hate on us Brown.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Real Chicano rap w/ that West Coast Flavor!!.......2004-11-26

Being a music fan, I know when I hear great Hip-Hop, Gangster Rap and Latinos at the mix. Too many Latino/Chicano rappers nowadays, however--I hate to say it--plain suck! Which is one reason out of many why their gangsta' rap doesn't go mainstream like that of NWA, Westside Connection or the old Death Row crew, to name a few. Most hispanic rappers either can't flow or rhyme at all. In fact, their beats are often more mediocre than the rapper himself. There are a couple, however, that are/were hot and have reached mainstream glory; Kid Frost, Delinquent Habits, Cypress Hill, Beatnuts, Baby Bash, Big Pun, Fat Joe, Pitbull and Daddy Yankee. El Dyablo is another Ese who has skills but hasn't quite made it--not yet, anyways.

When it comes to Mr. Capone-E, he really delivers beautifully on this LP, though at times with minor problems. His rapping style is good, and his beats are superb with that famous West Coast flavor we all love so much. He wisely assembled the hardest-hitting Mexican rappers in Cali and recruited some of the finest, westcoast-gangsta artists in the game to date, Nate Dogg and Kokane (aka Mr. Kane). He does this in such a genius way that all these appearances don't steal any credibility away from him--nor do they overshadow him either. In Nate Dogg's own words, "Nobody does it better."

Although the entire album is unbelievably good from track 1 to the end, go ahead and hit the "repeat" on these ones:

Track 4, "I Like It" feat. Nate Dogg
Track 7, "Modern Day Gangster" feat. Kokane
Track 8, "Say Hello" feat. Mr. Criminal, Silent & Scrappy Loco
Track 9, "LA County Most Wanted," feat. Mr. Criminal, Silent & Lil' Cuete
    Track 13, "VIP"

There's been a lot of speculation that Mr. Capone-E isn't exactly Mexican, which leads me to ask the question: What is Mexican? Though born Pakistani by ethnicity, he was raised in the ghetto along side Mexicans. He grew up in a crime-infested-poverty-stricken gutter, hanging out with the "bad element" we now call homies. In fact, his speech pattern is that of a Bato Cholo (Chicano gang banger), and he dresses and looks exactly like them. He's been Mexicanized, so to speak (if such a word exists). They have adopted him with open arms and he has gladly embraced their warmth.

Bottom line--if you're looking for great Latino/Chicano rap to listen to while you're in you automobile or just having a ghetto-fabulous party, you'll surely find it here in Mr. Capone-E's "Always and Forever" album. You're gonna love it either as a Capone-E fan or as a Rap enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Afro-Cuban swing like Tito did it........2001-08-29

This CD reminds me of a CD by Tito Puente call "Cubarama! Let's Cha Cha". Which has that Palladium Days feel to it. Lots of cha cha's and mambos and a couple of more jazzyer tunes too. This CD also has a great version of La Bamba in the traditional style not like Richie Valens. This is great music to dance to and its alot of fun. Enjoy.
