Even if you are not a fan of "todays" music, this cd will help you appreciate that music. This cd is great to listen to. You will even enjoy what "Streetwize" did with and "old school" favorite on track 10. You will not be disappointed with this cd. Streetwize, keep doing your thing. Great job.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-11

I like this CD a lot. She's like Fiona Apple but with the essence of an earlier era. Rockin' and soulful. I like it.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-01-30

This album is great. Colleen is a great singer and the music is exceptional. My most favorite songs are: "St. Christopher" "It Was Raining" "King of Brooklyn" "Liquor Store" "Left" and "If I Died In Your Arms". I don't really like "Walk With Me" but its not torture.

4 out of 5 stars Punky lounge singer???.......2006-01-04

Too bad there are some folks out there ripping this album, because they thought it was someone else. Oh well, that's the way some folks are...

Anyway, this is a pretty solid album. Pretty diverse selection of styles... Wouldn't be surprised to hear some of this in a nice nightclub or a seedy strip bar. On a few tunes, she really belts it out! It's smoky, sexy, jazzy, punkish, brassy, b#llsy, b$tchy with a pinch of burlesque-y gurl power. Total of 18 tracks, but would have been better if they cut a few off. It's an excellent listen, but some of the songs start to run together, simply because there are so many. Personal favorite is track 2, "You Are the Best Thing and the Worst Thing". Check it out. If you made it this far to find this album, then you will probably like it.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked fun.......2005-12-30

Stumbled across this CD and it hasn't let me go since! She has amazing vocals, and the songs are catchy and haunting. Favorite tracks include Heart Sized Crush and King of Brooklyn, but I love them all! On constant replay in my car, at home, and at work.

1 out of 5 stars story of devil doll.......2005-12-16

Italy, 1987, Mr.Doctor introduced 'Mark of the Beast', under the artist name 'Devil Doll', he's created numerous masterpieces, unlike anything ever composed...

It isn't right for THIS band to use the name 'Devil Doll', Mr.Doctor has earned the name, and anybody familiar with his work will only laugh at THIS band.

Album Description

The Elephant's Baby is indescribably witty, urbane, slick and all around unique. Fader has the proverbial way with words and her imagination is a frightfully bizarre living room full of animal noises, weird lovers, threatening furniture, strange childhood stories, and the occasional romantic holiday. It's all played out as cabaret (she calls her ensemble The Vaudevillains), part New York 1999 and part Berlin 1927. It's a cabaret act that has gone off its meds. It allows for nursery stories with masochistic leanings, simple love songs that catch you off guard, and a subtle sexuality and blatant carnality that are disarmingly sweet and slyly dark...

Arranger and conductor Damon Camona has assembled an orchestra of strings, woodwinds, percussion, reeds and brass that harkens back to the Carl Stalling ensembles of Looney Tunes fame. He has them spinning like tops, turning on a dime and a whim...It bubbles, growls, pops, and snaps, evoking merriment and foreboding in equal measure, lush to a fault, edgy to distraction...

[Fader and Carmona] seem to have fed each other's strange sensibilities to produce one of the more unique American Recordings I have heard in recent years."

5 out of 5 stars The Cat's Meow........2006-08-08

Refreshingly cool. Back-alley-smart. Street-sassy. Capricious. Non-cliched. Captivating. Intriguing. Humorous. Elegant. After-hours Martini mingle. The Cat's Meow. At times the album sounds simultaneously gritty and debonair--kinda' like Midnight Cowboy's Ratso in tux. That's my brief FIVE star review for Clare Faders "Elephants Baby." If you like this I'm sure you will dig her other musical creations as well. Do yourself a favor, enjoy one of her international concerts as I have in Gothenburg, Sweden! Stefano Musitano, Sweden

Clare Fader has mastered bringing cabaret back to life. Her debut album contains some great songs and shows promise for the future (her future would produce an even better album a little while later).

1. Animal Charm - quirky, catchy, and fun... a sing-a-long type of song. A

2. Sister Of Mine - another catchy song. B+

3. The Wine - fun, quirky, and catchy... this song was featured on MTV's The Real World for a reason. I dare you not to sing along. A+

4. Love is the Cruelest Cliche - a slower song with strings, oboe, and piano backing Ms. Fader. B

5. Drunk on Skin - great lyrics, great music, Clare's done it again. A-

6. Wedding Day Lament - a slower, storylike song that'd fit perfectly into a musical. B

7. Alice - my least favorite Clare fader song... it's slow and not overly catchy... doesn't seem to fit well on the album, in my opinion- but I'm glad it's here, because it's something else from Ms. Fader. C

8. Johnny - the album picks back up in pace with this one... a great sing-along. A

9. Cabin Fever - another one I can't help but singing along to. How does she do it? Great lyrics. A-

10. Queen - a slow-down point again... but not necessarily bad. Another song that'd fit well into a musical. B

11. Isle of Summer - the climax of the musical that is the album. Wonderful way to close the album. A

4 out of 5 stars Alternative Listening .......2005-08-12

I was interested by this album from what I heard of the track "The Wine" especially the use of German made almost Garbo like in sound. I was pleasantly surprised at finding a kaleidoscope of listening pleasure whith each track containing its own unique sound and thoughtful lyrics - listen to "Drunk on Skin" or "Johnny" and be amazed. I am looking forward to listening to more of Clare Fader in future.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Big Thing.......2005-07-31

I respectfully disagree with M.Elkins, I think ELEPHANT'S BABY is for everyone, at least everyone with the merest hint of taste.

THE ELEPHANT'S BABY is both wonderfully retro and perfectly contemporary at the same time (not an easy trick to perform).

Clare Fader's voice is spectacular, the arrangements superb, but what puts THE ELEPHANT'S BABY over the top, and what makes Clare Fader feel like "The Next Big Thing," is her incredible song writing ability. Each song is a well executed short story in and of itself. Her tales are fairly twisted, but in a sweet rather than dark way.

I urge you to buy it now so that when Clare Fader is famous in a year or two, you can say, with haughty delight, "Oh, I've been listening to her for years!"

Product Description

Free & Easy is the culmination Lovespirals 3-year exploration of fusing myriad musical interests into a satisfyingly smooth sound they refer to as electro-acoustic pop. While Windblown Kiss cleverly disguised Lovespirals' digital recording techniques with its focus on organic sounds and more traditional songwriting styles, Free & Easy embraces the bands electronic origins, offering a balanced blend of elements from their earlier dance-oriented material as well as their more rock-based pop offerings. Every track on Free & Easy has its own unique feel; the title track and album opener, "Free and Easy", is laid-back Morcheeba-esque downtempo flavored with old-school R&B stylings, including melodious Rhodes piano and wah guitar. "Hand in Hand" takes an earlier jazz-step single, slows it down to a relaxed liquid funk pace, then builds it up with heartbreakingly sweet vocal harmonies, a light, jazzy mix of acoustic and electric guitars, and a smatter of saxophone by special guest musician, Doron Orenstein. "Deep in my Soul", the funkiest of the bunch, is an upbeat deep house track featuring soulful vocals and gritty wah work, ending on a spiritual note with soaring hammond organ chords. The album takes another unexpected turn with, "Habitual", whose sparse arrangement and hushed tone recalls some of the late 60's, early 70's music that inspires the band. Album closer, "Sandcastles", further amplifies this retro rock influence in the form of an extended guitar jam breakdown and dramatic gospel-style closing. Throughout this 43-minute collection of electro-acoustic downtempo, deep house, and jazzy-yet-rock-infused chill out, Lovespirals traverse many genres while maintaining a recognizably dreamy, sensual vibe courtesy of the smooth, soulful guitar and Rhodes piano of Ryan Lum, enhanced by the seductive vocals and romantic lyrics of Anji Bee.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love Survives.......2005-11-13

Ryan Lum, the founder of Love Spirals Downwards/Lovespirals, has went through many musical evolutions over the years. Never content to stay stuck in one musical genre, he has made strides to reach a wider audience while doing what he loves most. One of those major changes came about with the departure of ethereal vocalist, Suzanne Perry and the inclusion of sultry voiced singer, Anji Bee. The switch came as a shock for many fans of LSD, but over time Lovespirals has managed to come into their own. This is especially noticeable with the release of their sophomore album, "Free & Easy". No longer can you compare apples to oranges, but you can certainly appreciate both for what they are. Long gone are the days of the cool dnb beats of "Flux" as we are introduced to an album splashed with color and soul that certainly lives up to its name. Tracks such as "Love Survives", "Deep In My Soul", "Sandcastles", "Hand In Hand" and "Habitual" will keep you coming back for more!

5 out of 5 stars Easy on the soul........2005-11-09

Free & Easy is the official rebirth album from West Coast legends Ryan Lum and Anji Bee. Three years after jumping from the gothic-based Projekt Music label, Lovespirals has finally grown some roots.

Lum's eclectic musical talents and mixing skills set Free & Easy on fire, while Bee's vocal poetry cool it down with tunes best suited for the vinyl and headphones crowd. If you're new to Lovespirals, Free & Easy won't disappoint. The 9 tunes spun into this album run through the veins of downtempo (as the "easy" title suggests) to the heart of jazz, and end up in your soul.

Take my word for it. Free & Easy is worth the trip.

Album Description

On their second CD, "Who the Sky Betrays," Brooklyn's MAROON gives the jazz tradition a jolt of contemporary pop music and politics. The result is a collection of sexy, intelligent songs fueled by hip-hop, rock, and jazz grooves, and laced with fiery lyrics and sophisticated jazz harmonies. The album, which features guitar hero Marc Ribot on five tracks, re-imagines familiar songs including Radiohead's "The Tourist," Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun," and Chrissie Hynde's "Show Me," in radically new ways. "We really respect the work of Cassandra Wilson and The Bad Plus, artists who are keeping jazz relevant," says the band's co-leader and singer Hillary Maroon. "We grew up with rock songs, so why shouldn't we play them? It's our music."

Whatever MAROON plays, whether it's a rock cover, a jazz standard, or one of their original songs, they test the boundaries between contemporary popular music and modern jazz. Radiohead's "The Tourist" receives an emotionally exposed reading by singer Maroon, a canny combination of technical finesse and smoldering feeling over a tapestry of intimate acoustic piano and spacey guitar electronics. Chrissie Hynde's "Show Me" is simple and direct from the heart, but emotionally rich and elegantly arranged. The confrontational, hip-hop flavored original, "Bully on the Block," is a "straight-up protest song" written in reaction to Secretary of State Colin Powell's characterization of U.S. foreign policy. Another original, "Spun Me Shaky" dissects a failed relationship with unsentimental candor, while "Is This the Time?" weaves a tale of social paranoia and political fear. Their acoustic version of Victor Young's standard "When I Fall in Love" gives Tin Pan Alley a new twist with an! arrangement that sounds inspired by The Miles Davis Quintet of the 1960s.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A CLASSIC.......2003-10-19

The third song, "Will It Matter Who We Were", is destined to be a classic. Its content is tender, profound, and a universal question we can all identify with. Besides the wonderful lyrics, Maroon's treatment is professional in every way, intrumentation and vocals. Equal to Etta James' "At Last", once this new creation gets out, I predict it will be covered by the major artists of this genre. The other songs are professionally recorded whether original or covers. This is a wonderful musical experience by this very exciting and professional New York group.

    Album Description

Windblown Kiss is the first full-length album by Lovespirals, the beautiful, and beautifully surprising collaboration of RYAN LUM (the driving force behind legendary Love Spirals Downwards ) and new collaborative singer/songwriter Anji Bee.

Reknown multi-instrumentalist Lum once again creates musical landscapes of breathtaking beauty - and with vocal styles ranging from ethereal to earthy, sweet to sensual, Bee shows off her remarkable vocal range, and allows the full force of her voice to soar into the sublime.

Drawing inspiration from Flamenco, Bebop, soul, folk and the stacks of early vinyl they each grew up loving, Lovespirals has created a timeless world of romance and intrigue. Leaving behind the conventional restraints of dance-floor tracks, this latest endeavor is at once a dreamscape of nostalgia, and a kiss blown to the future.

Using half a dozen different guitars, and featuring the extraordinary talents of Doron Orenstein (of Frescoe ) on saxophones, and Sean Bowley (of Eden) on acoustic guitar and vocals, Windblown Kiss is a celebration of creative anachronism: the past and the future negotiate a gorgeous balance.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of this great album........2004-06-19

I bought this CD over a month ago and just can't get enough of it. I'm reading these reviews now, and I think it deserves a higher rating than it's got. Well, I keep returning over and over to everything that Love Spirals Downwards has recorded, especially songs like City Moon and Sunset Bell from Flux and Noumena of Spirit and This Endris Night from Idylls, Madras, Will You Fade, etc. But this is fast becoming one of my favorite cds of all time. There are so many great things about this album. Anji Bee is just divine. Her vocals and harmonies soar into that perfect harmonious space that great singers know how to hit. What a great remake of America's You Girl. I listened to this song on repeat for about 8 hours over two days on my trip through Arizona and Utah. Her backing vocals at the end are just delicious. Same for how her backing vocal comes in with the lines "toda se pasa" on Dejame or "his voice is like a song..." on He Calls Me. The Spanish lines flow so nicely in Dejame- "y los suenos, suenos son." Oh man, more people should buy this CD. I can't get enough of the gorgeous and intricate saxophone melodies in the 3 songs that feature Doron Orenstein. It inspires me to get more sax cds now. Ryan Lum's guitar work is great as usual, but this album is so varied, with all the different styles. I love the solo on Windblown Kiss and his mood setting picking on Swollen Sea. Anji Bee sings just off key at times to also add to the atmosphere of Swollen Sea- "will you return here, engulfed by a bleak fear..." I drove through a Death Valley sunset listening to this great song. Then comes the last track, which is currently my favorite track. I just love the way the sax repeats his line about two minutes into the song and then she repeats "no I, no I can't see you..." It's just brilliant, and one of many brilliant moments on this album. If these songs are a sincere expression of their love for each other, then I feel it. You guys are great- I so much look forward to your next CD!

2 out of 5 stars Um....not what I expected, and to be honest it was not good.......2003-05-23

After reading these other reviews, I was psyched to get this album and give it a listen. I loved Love Spirals Downwards, and figured it is basically them anyhow so it should rock. Well, from the first song on I forced myself not to turn of the disc player! It is a totally different vibe then LSD, so if you are expecting anything like the other LSD albums it is not. The vocals are similar for the women, but a guy sings now, if you can call it that. It had 1 or 2 songs that were OK at best, but it was not worth the price I payed. I would return it in a heartbeat if I could. This sounds harsh, but so does the album.

5 out of 5 stars Lovespirals need a new audience.......2002-10-08

"Windblown Kiss" is obviously misunderstood by many Projekt Records fans. Clearly, this album was not recorded with them in mind. None -- or at least, few -- of the typical ethereal music cliches are present in the songwriting of this new Lovespirals release. While there is certainly an ethereal mood to many of the songs, there is never an abundance of quote-unquote ethereal style going on. Lovespirals compose songs, not ambient passages, with clearly defined verses, choruses, bridges, solos -- the whole nine yards. Not content to stick to simple mood pieces, they offer fine musicianship and variety in the sound and song structures of this unconventional offering. There's no easy pigeonhole for Lovespirals' music to fit into, least of all darkwave, gothic, ambient, or ethereal. Jazz is really not an apt description either, as jazz is merely one element of their songwriting. Folk is certainly also present, rock, even a bit of world music. This album doesn't cater to any one class of music genres, which makes it very refreshing to some folks, and fairly difficult for others. The fact that it doesn't live up to someone's idea of what a Projekt record -- or a Love Spirals Downwards record -- should sound like does not make it a "bad" record. This record needs to be discovered by a much broader range of music listeners to be truly appreciated for what it is; an extraordinarly brave new blend of musical genres, taking the most profound and beautiful essense of each, and wedding them in blissful harmony.

i heard this band at projektfest and thought the music sounded cool enough so i bought the cd....got it home and didn't enjoy it...

5 out of 5 stars Sultry and Sweet.......2002-09-14

Let me start off by saying that Lovespiralsdownward has been one of my favorite bands for over 10 years. Suzanne Perry's delay laden, processed vocals were wonderful. Now with that said, Windblown Kiss is not a Lovespiralsdownward album. IT'S BETTER!
What we lost with the departure Suzanne Perry, we gained in the sweet voiced Anji Bee, who really shows off her talent with some sultry Jazz vocals. As for Ryan Lum, he's still creating great music. Windblown Kiss is more eclectic than some of his recent work, and reminds me more of his first album Idylls. The tracks I like most on Windblown Kiss are "I can't see you", and the America cover "You Girl". I can't really compare Lovespirals to another artist, but I will tell you that after listening to this album I had a strong craving to listen to artist like Peggy Lee, Nina Simone, Chris Isaak, Leonard Cohen, Cocteau Twins, and Tricky.

Purely acoustic music, capturing the array of experiences of the city landscape at night. Where the sounds of jazz and blues and R'n'B float as a soundtrack to the time of day we are our most hopeful, and our most vulnerable.

    5 out of 5 stars A Stand-out Album - BUY IT!.......2001-11-08

Fantastic performances on this album - every time I give it a listen, I find myself pausing whatever I'm doing for a few minutes to fully enjoy the track. The CD is very well produced and nicely balanced, and tracks are nicely sequenced.

What I really like, and what makes this CD different from the rest, is that the vocalist E.J. Decker shares the spotlight with the guys in the band, who turn in superb performances. It's like being in a New York nightclub -- the singer takes a little breather, and the musicians are having such a great time they just keep going 'til the vocalist jumps back in.

From toe-tappers to smoky ballads, you'll really enjoy this slice of New York nightlife - BUY IT!
