This 1971 date was Washington's first as a leader, after playing and recording with the small organ combos of Charles Earland and Johnny "Hammond" Smith. It's unheard-of for a jazz musician to make his debut complete with strings, horns, and vocal group, but Washington apparently got the opportunity when the backing tracks were in place for a Hank Crawford album and Crawford was out of the country. Stranger still, Washington is usually playing alto here rather than his customary soprano or tenor. It was an instrument he hadn't played in years, and the result of his horn switching is a compellingly original sound that's almost sopranolike. Despite the circumstances, Washington brings a lot of himself to this music, making personal statements of two contemporary Marvin Gaye songs, "Inner City Blues" and "Mercy, Mercy Me," and the standards "Georgia on My Mind" and "I Loves You, Porgy." He also puts together an effective combination of Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine" and J.J. Johnson's "Theme from Man and Boy." Whether it's the tight combo of "Inner City Blues" or the full-blown orchestra with strings and backing vocals, this is soul jazz of the first rank. --Adam Rains

4 out of 5 stars SOUNDS OF BLACKNESS' "MERCY.."MAKES THIS BUY MOST WORTHY!.......2003-03-01

I first heard "God is Love/Mercy Mercy Me" on radio and got hooked on the song. When I found out it was by Sounds of Blackness, I searched every music store for their CD, and even on the web but couldn't find the song. Then I chanced upon it on this used CD. Man, the transition from the first part (GOD IS LOVE) a funky dance-beat Gospel inspired tune to the second part (Mercy Me) is a work of a genius. You should hear this one. The rest is so-so but this one cut makes the whole CD worthwhile to buy! Thanks, Sounds of Blackness and to seller tomhiatt2002!

4 out of 5 stars Great Interpretations of Classics.......2002-10-23

I really do love the music of Marvin Gaye and his work. To have it reinterpreted by so many different people presents a real challenge. Yet it works. Not incredibly well. But good enough to buy and listen to the variety of interpretations. They do put melodic, rapping and lyrical spins onto the work which in some ways does succeed in making it more their own stand alone interpretations rather than simply reduxes.
A great buy......perhaps go for the used price. There are some products that are materially/work product overpriced but are still worth a hearty, avid listening.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2001-10-11

I first heard this while deployed in Italy.
The music of Marvin Gaye is beautiful, and the artists on the album give stellar performances. Their renditions are soulful and delivered from the heart. Don't let the fact that the cover says 'Various Artists' throw you off! This is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute to One of Music's GREATS!.......2001-02-19

Marvin Gaye was truly a unique artist, and this album of Gaye standards as interpreted by others adds to his legendary status. Beginning with daughter Nona's turn on the title cut, the CD triumphs on every single selection. The respective artists do not try to mimic Gaye; they simply do it their way without altering the passion of Gaye's lyrics.

Bono is superlative in his rendition of "Save the Children," BoyZ II Men blend their harmonies effectively on "Let's Get it On," while the very soulful Lisa Stansfield is just right on "Just to Keep You Satisfied." Madonna's "I Want You," slower than the original, retains Gaye's heartfelt plea to his intended paramour. "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" by Motown label mate Stevie Wonder is pure fun. Finally, Sounds of Blackness do justice to "God is Live/Mercy Mercy Me," making it perfect for the dancehall as well as the choir stand.

5 out of 5 stars Marvin would be proud of this tribute........2000-12-11

Every single song on this album is a wonderful tribute in itself to Marvin Gaye. Each artist puts their own touch on it, and makes it special, from the wonderful harmonies of Boyz 2 Men, the pulsating, haunting 'I want you' from Madonna and Massive Attack, and every other track on this album; Marvin would indeed be proud. For anyone who loves music from, and for the soul this is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Let me take you to a place I know that I know you'll want to go .......2006-08-28

when this album came out I was hypnotized by the song good life and to this day consider it to be in the top three of favorite songs. This is the type of music a house party has to have in order to a real house party.Big Fun.

5 out of 5 stars Prance Ladies, Prance!.......2005-10-02

When this album first came out, I was only twenty-two and the club scene was my life. "Big Fun" and "Paradise" were staples every single night. In fact, one night the DJ played tracks 1-10 all the way through and NOBODY left the dance floor. This album was just that popular. My own copy was lost in a move and I thought Inner City would be a thing of the past.

At a friend's 40th birthday party this year, all of a sudden "Ain't Nobody Better" was played. Let me tell you, these dinosaurs (including myself) got their carcasses up and began flailing themselves about as if it was 1989 all over again. I had to find this album.

There is not one single disappointing track. "The Power of Passion" may be a bit much, however, it's better than any Trance song ever forced on the unsuspecting public. "Do You Love What You Feel" to me is the best on this imcomparable CD. "Big Fun" and "Good Life" just dare you to keep sitting down without wanting to walk the runway. It's hard to believe that only two people made this classic.

Dance music today is soooo ordinary. If you want a reason to dance buy this CD! THIS is what dance music is supposed to be!

5 out of 5 stars big fun, i know someone else said it, but it's the bomb.......2005-09-13

hi,

great to see others wrote reviews, though an old album, it's appeal seems timeless. i haven't listened to this cd in years now, and i put it in to drive to and WOOOOOOOO, i forgot the connection i made in my mind when i first heard them, and still kinda hear (though it's a reverse comparison), it would be, don't get angry, dee-lite(shh did he? oh my? how dare you!), this in the sense that dee-lite in essence were an electronic soul dance group, that ventured into breakbeats, trance, dnb, but in the beginning on world clique some of the ambitions heard THERE can be heard realized HERE.

great sound, good to drive to, her voice is more soulful than usually heard on electronic dance albums, it adds ummmppphhh.

5 out of 5 stars We're Having Big Fun!.......2004-10-29

What a team - Paris Grey and Kevin Saunderson! Paris had been on the Chicago circuit for a while. When "Big Fun" was spotted as background music for a TV commercial those of us who were househeads went berserk! The whole album is a treat. Track one lays the foundation of original Detroit Techno: the coming together of all people and the preservation of the inner city (by the way, that same theme was reflected in some earlier Chicago records) Track four is a really interesting tune especially being of a slower tempo. Track six is a definite favorite, as it is such a "happy" tune. Track seven is basically a Chicago favorite that dominated the college radio stations. My absolute favorite track is the last one. "Secrets Of The Mind" is very hypnotic and it has the subtle Chicago flavor mixed with the upfront Detroit industrial sound. This is an album you can trust!

5 out of 5 stars Could be their best.......2001-12-21

This is a mixture of takes from four albums. Yes, their two big hits "Have You Seen Her" and "Oh Girl" are not on it, which is a good thing. Those are great tunes, but it's nice to hear some different stuff. There is not a bad song on this CD.

My favorite song of theirs, "Living in the footsteps of another man" is here and it sounds good as ever! Many more classics on this tremendous CD. Full of great harmonies and orchestration. This is one heckuva CD!

5 out of 5 stars Make You Wanna Holler.......2000-05-17

The strength of this compilation is not in its hit content ("Have You Seen Her" and "Oh, Girl" are missing), but in the inclusion of some sublime album cuts by this under-rated group. The Chi-Lites were unquestionably at their best when multi-talented Eugene Record was their chief song writer, producer, and lead singer. Their albums were always chock-full of quality cuts. It's great to see the title cut, Trouble's A-Comin', and Ain't Too Much Of Nothing (among others) finally appear on CD. If you already have both volumes of greatest hits as issued by Rhino, but you don't have this, do yourself a favor: buy it. Only a few cuts will be duplicated, and the rest is a treasure. The one cut that's not here that seems like it would be, is "Being In Love." But that's quibbling (especially since this song is included on the upcoming re-issue of "A Lonely Man"). The Chi-Lites (minus Eugene Record, who has retired to the ministry) issued a new CD in 1999 titled "Help Wanted." You can still see them in concert, often in package tours with The Dramatics and The Stylistics.

5 out of 5 stars Talk about memories...?.......2000-05-02

..."Living In the Footsteps (Of Another Man)", "Yes, I'm Ready", "Let me Be the Man My Daddy Was", "12th of Never"...school boy crush jams! So rare and so, so, so good...

5 out of 5 stars Classic rhythm and blues; it doesn't get any better!!!.......1999-03-08

This is classic rhythm and blues album. It doesn't get any better. Eugene Records smooth tones drifts you back to those days when life was easy and laid back when all you needed on a good date was a Chi-lite album and soft lights.

5 out of 5 stars MAGICAL R&B JAZZ TREAT!!!.......2006-11-18

Take a young, striving Grover Washington Jr. in 1972...now add producer Creed Taylor and mix in artists like Ron Carter, Bob James, Richard Tee, Eric Gale, add strings and background vocals and you have an ensemble to end them all!

With Grover Washington Jr. center stage... NOW, take these amazing talents and have them play Inner City Blues, Georgia, Mercy, Mercy Me, Ain't No Sunshine, Until It's Time For You To Go, and I Loves You Porgy.

This is one of Grover Washington Jr.'s finest, yet funky, and complex works. Creed Taylor (a musical magician) had obviously been an inspiration as a producer. In Grover's later works, it shows. This one is so very soulfully deep, it is not to be missed for any Grover collector!

5 out of 5 stars Soul-jazz/funk standard.......2002-11-27

As far as I'm concerned, this is one of the best soul-jazz albums ever. Listen to Grover wail on the title track with the sirens and dirty wah-guitar and then take things to a slow simmer on "Ain't No Sunshine". His superb rendition of "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" should make even the most jaded jazz snob's head bob--and check out that dual fender rhodes interlude by Bob James and Richard Tee! People complain that Grover Washington (like virtually every other jazz great post-1974) got too smooth and commercial. But on this, his debut, he has the space (and the charts) to showcase his lyrical improv skills, as well as show a gritty side as well. A funk masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars First release, and his best........2000-08-23

There are two fine guitarists I like a lot that came up at the same time and released their albums also almost simultaneously, until one of them passed away. I am refering to Zachary Breaux and Doc Powell.

Doc's first album is an EXTRAORDINARY one !

First of all, it shows how talented this man is with his guitar. The opening track ("Bahamma Momma"), "new day" or "On the other side" are good examples of virtuosity (sharp and rapid playing).

Second, the album is intelligently balanced : instrumentals, vocal contributions, tribute (to Eric Gale), cover version...without being pasty or cheesy or sounding overproduced, a very common thing in this genre, you will agree.

Third, the contribution of invited artists is one of the best I've ever seen : Philip Bailey (EWF), Jeffrey Osborne, Siedah Garrett and Howard Hewett (Shalamar) are PERFECT on vocals. Kirk Whalum on sax, Ronnie Laws on sax, Ronnie Foster on organ, Bob James on piano, Patrice Rushen also on piano... AND, all of these artists on different tracks, of equal quality. Some think that just having a great lineup of artists that just play two notes is a guarantee by itself that the album is going to a) be great, b) sell more. On this album, everyone really does something. Who can give more ?

Fourth, the cover of Marvin's "Inner city blues" is a great one, and you know as well as I do that many cover versions are often flavourless, thus don't mean much, or are literally ridiculous. I could go on with several other reasons, but why don't you get this cd instead ? You like the vocalists featured on the album ? You like great sounds ? Then you must have this one.

The album is from 1994, and I still enjoy listening to it today. That might be a final clue...

For all you that don't know who dre iz where you been? This is unkomparible to Brotha lynch so don't try to put them on the same page. Dre comes way more real than Lynch ever could.the bottom line is If you want to see rap at its finest grab this cd it will show the blood, sweat, and tears some artists are willing to put into their music.Gangsta dre seems to be one of the realest rappers out, he came w/ gangbangin poetry 1 and 2, inner city poet, and here comes the night not to mention the work he has accomplished with hollow tip and mic-c. He still puts it down with young jayda and nonfiktion. Although his best work is done all by his lonely the great depression will show you that. Stay up for all the real fools in this game tryin to get their piece of the pie. SUPPORT THE REAL!!!! BUY this don't bootleg it.

5 out of 5 stars Slept on Artists.......2001-07-19

Gangsta Dre is one of the best rappers on the west coast. He is slept on by a lot of people and no one really knows him. He has a different style of rap which I like. Its not about cars, bigs houses, and havin money. In stead he raps about livin in the projects and smokin his newport. I can listen to this Cd from start to finish. Some of his best songs on this Cd are "Inner City Poey", "Sittin By Da Edge of Da Curb"," Da Early Bird Gets Da Worm", and "Let it rain". By this Cd and support this guy.
