Bonus tracks. . .uh. . .yah sure you betcha.......2007-05-03
Gave it a 4 star only because all 5 bonus tracks have already been released on Jazz At The Black Hawk (7-8, 10-11) and Jazz At Storyville (9) but give it a five if you don't have either of theses LPs or the CD Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond which has these tracks as well.
Or rate it 5 stars just for the historical content or just because you like the Bru.
Since I have more than 100 Brubeck LPs and CDs these bonus tracks are just padding to me. . .and irritating, since there are other notable LPs and concerts that have never been kissed by the digital age. One notable with nary an LP or DVD or CD is Dave Brubeck from the 1979 Newport Jazz Fest. Get it before it disappears.

Stan Getz Swings Before He Learned the Samba.......2002-03-09
In 1962, I took my first paycheck ever into a record store looking for "West Side Story". There, on an end cap, was an album with a picture of the Jets on the cover--much more appealing than the all-red cover of the sound-track. The clerk said "If you like that, you've got to hear this!" and put a copy of "Stan Getz and the Cool Sounds" on the turntable (in those days, they didn't shrink-wrap music, and they'd play it before you bought it). That day, I bought my first two albums...Thus began a lifetime love of that moment in jazz between swing and be-bop personified by Oscar Peterson and (briefly) Stan Getz. Here, Getz swings with an incredibly mellow sound; and does it without being syrupy. Bob Brookmeyer joins in on several numbers and makes you wish he'd made more than two appearances with Getz. The rhythm section stays mostly in thebackground, but catch John Williams' piano solo on Roundup Time and the solid rhythm of the Frank Isola cuts. This is music for *listening*. If all you know of Getz is the latin stuff, you owe it to yourself to find out what he did for thirty years before he learned to samba. I'm so glad to see this out on CD. I'm waiting for the US remaster, but it's on my short list. That 40-year-old record is so muddy it's hardly worth copying, but it's still one of the half dozen that live on the "play me" shelf--right next to the Peterson "West Side Story".

Album Description
Successful with his full-length Pop debut album I CAN FEEL YOU IN MY HEART, and single CHRISTMAS IN CHICAGO, on various national radio network satelites and international digital cable companies, MICHAEL POSS (rhymes with Ross) continues his good fortune with a new full-length album entitled SILVER SCREEN SERENADES. This time the former Chicagoan has devoted an album full of cinematic love songs of the 20th Century. Most of the tracks are standards, but contain five original compositions that were written and inspired by some of Michael's favorite movies. The two singles slated for radio air-play from his new album are "Love Finds You", an original mid-up tempo Big Band track inspired by the screwball movies of the 30's and 40's, and a cover of the 1939 classic Faithful Forever. Other songs have been refreshingly re-arranged, big band style, like the Hugh Martin and late Marshall Barer cabaret favorite, "On Such A Night as This".
A rather cleverly arranged, and melancholy track combines Irving Berlin's, "They Say That Falling In Love Is Wonderful" with Richard Carpenter's "I Need To Be In Love", that would have prompted Karen Carpenter to re-record, if she were still alive today. The Titanic inspired and haunting original "To See Your Face Again" will make you think twice about the existence of life after death.
Michael's arranger on this recording project is Christopher Hardin, who happens to be a busy, sought after film and TV composer in Hollywoods booming entertainment industry. Mr. Hardin utilizes his film scoring expertise with an exquisite and haunting string arrangement for a unique unheard lyrical rendition to the theme to Hitchcock's Marnie (though Universal Pictures never included the Bernard Hermann love theme in the 1964 film). MICHAEL'S new CD which contains 15 tracks with 2 bonus orchestral re-mixes incorporating a string section is now available from Twilight Souls Music, and may be ordered on Amazon.com.

Nice Movie Love Songs, But He Should Return To Pop Music!.......2001-06-17
I bought Michael's debut CD, "I Can Feel You In My Heart", a couple years ago, and still enjoy listening to his Pop CD. I just got his new CD "Silver Screen Serenades", and was a little disappointed. He decided to do a Cabaret/Lounge CD, and it's totally opposite of what I was expecting from this new release. His voice is well suited for Pop music, and not all this sappy Cabaret-Broadway stuff that my parents used to listen to. He's a good writer, and Pop singer, but this CD contains a lot of cover songs from the movies and it's something that the older 50,60 or 70-something generation will get into. His last CD contained a lot of fresh, original songs, and it's something that Michael Poss needs to pursue again. I hope he goes back to Pop music, and leave the Lounge/Cabaret and Show Music behind!
Nice Selection of Classic Cinema Love Songs.......2001-03-06
I stumbled across this artist via the recommendations/suggestions column, and ordered his CD. There's a couple of excellent tracks and arrangements on this indie label release from Twilight Souls Music. Michael Poss' vocal phrasing and his style will most likely appeal to the Harry Connick, Jr., Linda Eder, and Johnny Mathis crowd. There's even a couple of his original songs that were inspired by the movies. Cool stuff, if you're interested in the Big Band, Easy Listening type of music.
A Refreshing New Light On Classic Hollywood Love Songs.......2001-01-10
With his hauntingly beautiful baritone voice, Michael Poss gives a new reflective meaning to some of our favorite movie love themes, as well as some forgotten classics. This is a wonderful album and I'm happy Michael Poss took a risk by producing something that is against all of the "boy-toy" mainstream 'pop' groups oversaturating today's radio stations. If you like songs with deep meaning there's the original "To See Your Face Again", written by Michael. If you like uptempo big bands songs there's Michael's original "Love Finds You", and also the forgotten song "The Jitterbug" that was cut from MGM's 1939 'The Wizard Of Oz'. I never get tired of listening to some of these classics when I'm driving in my car. This album totally relaxes me on the way to work. Great songs from a true vocal interpreter!
Move Over Tony & Harry, Michael Poss Has Found His Style!.......2000-10-07
I agree with the other reviewer, Michael's music is beautiful, and I was anticipating more original Big Band songs. And it was very hard to read the liner notes, I usually don't, but they were interesting-even if I have a headache from eye strain. I never knew that about Judy Garland, and Betty Hutton! Anyway, what I really liked about his new CD release was the feeling and excitement projected from his 'live' recordings that were included on it. That was refreshing, because you seldom ever here that nowadays with any of these new 'pop' stars. Thanks for the lead about his concerts and the website, I want to see him perform live in concert, and I always forget to search that way. My favorite song on the CD is "Faithful, Forever", it's from the old cartoon movie 'Guliver's Travels'. I remember that song from the movie when I was growing up, and it's so beautiful! Michael did a great job singing it, the arrangement is gorgeous, and it's right on the money. I can't wait to see him perform live! Since I'm more into Big Band music, I'm happy he went back to this genre. Right on, Michael!
Hollywood & Cabaret Blend Well In Silver Screen Serenades.......2000-10-05
I was fortunate enough to finally locate Michael Poss' new CD saluting some of Hollywood's famous movie love songs. It was an easy search location, that I started to make difficult. I found everything on his official website, of course. I'm not computer friendly, mind you! One of the reasons why I wanted to obtain this particular release was the fact that I attended one of his live concerts at The Cinegrill in Hollywood. He sang the love theme from Alfred Hitchcock's "Marnie". A lot of people in the audience were amazed that this song even existed. He said it would be included as a special orchestral string arrangement on his new CD. It was worth the wait, because I like his studio recording even more! The CD contains an arrangement that was yanked from 'THE WIZARD OF OZ' called "The Jitterbug". It has a nice , uptempo big band feel... and it makes me want to take Swing Dance lessons. The new release also contains a couple of original songs written by Michael, and arranged by composer Christopher Hardin. The liner notes give a little bit of history, and/or a profound anecdote for each song. Which is also my main complaint. I had to get a large magnifying lense to read the info! I was also a little disappointed that this album lacked more of his original songs, like his first CD. In fact, there are two recordings of "To See Your Face Again" contained on this CD. One track was recorded live, the other was in the studio as an orchestral version. That song is beautiful and would be perfect for some new romantic movie, the kind that end in tragedy. I like listening to Michael's melodies and his choice of words. Keep up the good work, Michael! (From one of your `cabaret fans', who also happens to be a native of Chicago, too!).

Fine "West Coast" Jazz.......2006-01-29
Man, who cares if some of the selections on this CD are on another collection! This is some fine "cool" jazz for those who like that style. The low-key understated playing by Getz on this disc would be a perfect addition to the collection of anyone who is a "west coast" or "cool" jazz listener.
Yes, cooooooooool sounds!.......2004-09-09
Three stars for this masterpiece could be a greatly misleading rating even if the reviewer take his time to explain that he's judging the product, not the music. I will talk about the music instead. It is surely one of the best albums in the whole Getz enormous discography, full of gems by the way. You can buy it easily, you will not be disappointed, it's impossible. Getz swings lightly here, he flies over a perfect accompainment. In the first four tracks it is provided by a stellar west coast combo, Shelly Manne drums, Leroy Vinnegar double bass, Lou Levy piano. Impressive. It's simply a marvel. West coast jazz at its best, swinging, relaxing, coooooooool west coast jazz to die for. The year is 1955. Then you have 6 more tunes with different personnel. Bob Brookmeyer valve trobone, Tony Fruscella trumpet (they don't play in the same tunes, Fruscella palys only in "Blue bells" and "Roundup time"), Max Roach drums and lesser player. The program is composed only by standards plus an original by Brookmeyer at the end of the record. Getz sounds always perfect in his music, sometimes at least too perfect but a little bit cold (not cool, I mean cold). Art Pepper was of this same idea, "Stan's perfect but too cold" he used to say. I agree. But here Getz played so well that you almost can forget his perfectionism and enjoy fully his enormous talent and impeccable swing. "Cool sounds" is truly one of his best records. Be aware that this same music is contained in the West coast 3 cd box by Stan too. I own both. This cover is something you can't miss if you (like myself) love fifties records.
Cool Sounds, Not a Cool Product.......2003-06-19
I love Stan Getz, and "Cool Sounds" is a collection of great music he made between 1953-55. But the release of this limited edition CD is definitely not cool! The reason is that the disc's first four tracks have already been released as bonus tracks on the CD of "West Coast Jazz" (see my review). See, when "Cool Sounds" originally came out on vinyl, it was a collection of outtakes and abbreviated sessions packaged together to further capitalize on Getz's soaring popularity. But now in the era of the compact disc, these selections should be issued as bonus tracks along with other material recorded at the time of their creation, as was already done on "West Coast Jazz." What the folks at Verve should have done instead of reissuing "Cool Sounds" was reissue the long out-of-print "More West Coast Jazz," and include tracks 5-9 from this disc as bonus tracks. Now that would have been cool!
