Customer Reviews:
1957 Was a Great Year for Records and for Setting Records!.......2005-05-04
Not only was 1957 a great year for a variety of songs that made number 1, but another record was set that year which has not been duplicated. As most of those who were around at the transition from pop music to rock and roll or have "non-revisionist" knowledge of the era know, it was a common practice for major labels to have one or more of their acts cover promising and breaking songs both in their category and in others. (Not only did the 3 classifications of music at the time, Pop, C&W, and R&B, cover other acts in their class but they covered acts in the other 2 classifications as well.) The various versions of a song competed for air play, sales, and chart ratings. Because chart ratings at that time were done by individual release rather than lumping all versions under one song, it was quite common to have several versions of a song rated in top 30. For example, 6 versions of "Banana Boat Song/Day-O" were in the top 25, 3 of "Unchained Melody" in top 6 (long before the Righteous Brothers recorded it), 7 of "Mack the Knife/Moritat," 5 of "Melody of Love"...you get the picture!
Anyhow, to correct a previous reviewer who stated that Tab Hunter's version of "Young Love" was number 1 while Sonny James' version reached number 2, which has never been duplicated: there are 2 errors in this statement. First, Sonny James' version actually did hit number 1 for one week but was replaced at number 1 by Tab Hunter's version of the same song. After 6 weeks at number 1, Hunter's record was replaced at the top spot by Buddy Knox's "Party Doll," which only stayed there for 1 week. It was replaced at number 1 by Andy Williams' "Butterfly" which in turn was knocked out of the top spot by Charlie Gracie's version of "Butterfly. (Williams' was number 1 for 3 weeks while Gracie's was number 1 for 2 weeks.)
So, the actual record is not having a #1 and a #2 rating of the same song at the same time, which the reviewer said had never been duplicated, but it is having 2 versions of a song that replace each other at number 1. Second error by the reviewer: it WAS duplicated and with only 1 week separating the two songs
"Young Love" and "Butterfly." Now this feat has not been duplicated! Since that time, no other song has had 2 versions to replace the other at the top spot. (Yes, some songs have made the top spot more than once, "The Twist" and "Unchained Melody" for example, but that is a different matter altogether.)
The chart ratings used are Billboard's as listed in Joel Whitburn's book "The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits." This book is an invaluable source of record info and is highly recommended.
As the previous reviewer noted, though, it's doubtful many people will read these reviews.
So Long Ago But It IS History.......2005-02-18
I don't own this compilation but I do own some of the original recordings that, um, my grandfather gave me. "Love Letters in the Sand" may be remembered by many people even though Pat Boone gets scant play on the oldies stations. Included here also are some songs from other venues. Jane Morgan was from another school of music with her "Fascination", the Beatles were not the first charted singers from Liverpool but rather Russ Hamilton, and Big Band leader of the 40s Jimmy Dorsey had a great soulful instrumental with "So Rare". "Young Wild Heart" was a one-hit wonder's song of a different nature in early '57, the Hilltoppers had a lot of charted hits like "Marianne" and appeared on American Bandstand but were not rock, doo woop or R&B. 1957 had not completely surrendered to the emerging music of youth. "Let the Four Winds Blow" by blues shouter Roy Brown was covered (more successfully) by Fats Domino. (Brown wrote "Good Rocking Tonight", a song later covered by Brown fan Elvis Presley--"rocking" was a gerund meaning something else -ahem- in 1946 when Brown wrote it). Ernie Freeman had a hit with "Dumplin's" and later played with B. Bumble and the Stingers (Nutrocker) in the early 60s. Bonnie Guitar sang "Dark Moon" but it was overshadowed by Gale Storm's version. Country singer Marvin Rainwater had the biggest(or only) hit of his career with a memorable "Gonna Find Me A Bluebird". Tab Hunter had a #1 song with "Young Love" while a better singer who would later successfully cover other singers' hits, Sonny James, had the SAME SONG that should have been his alone at #2. (Tab was a teenage idol though). That has never happened since. Country singer Leroy Van Dyke had his first big hit with "Auctioneer". The Del Vikings, the best known of only a handful of integrated groups of that era, scored big with "Come Go With Me", still a classic so many years later. The Five Satins followed their success with "In the Still of the Night" with "To the Aisle". The Rays had their one hit with "Silhouettes" (later covered by Herman's Hermits), a song written by prolific music producer Bob Crewe who later had "Music to Watch Girls By" as a hit of his own. This is a good representation of some veteran musicians/singers and some up-and-comers of different genres who shared the pop charts of the era. All in all, it's worth five stars---if anyone ever visits here to check it out.

Jukebox Jewels.......2007-07-07
When my wife and I listened to this it reminded us of youth centers or teen halls of the Sixties. This has several songs to dance to and is very upbeat. I don't often go in for collections like this because we have bought alot of greatest hits from groups of the Sixties. This particular CD had several songs not on the other CDs we have. The other thing I find myself putting together CDs of hits from other albums. This saves me the trouble. The other thing that makes it very special is they are all great songs. To often these CDs have only a few hits and the rest are songs from the period, but they weren't big hits. The sound on this CD was sharp and clear. Better than when we heard it on new 45s or albums back at the time. For those of you that don't know, many sound systems weren't stereo then and the record player or Jukebox needles often were not new so you got pop and hiss playing these then. I certainly don't hear any of that here. I highly recommend this CD.

Jukebox Hits of 1967.......2006-09-23
I remember some of these songs when I was growing up. However, I have been introduced to some new songs as well.
Just Average CD.......2006-06-21
I too was slightly disappointed in this CD, although it did contain 7 tracks that I did not previously have. My copy also had "Get on Up" by The Esquires instead of their follow-up "And Get Away." Also, there was audio damage which sounded like static all through the last track, "I Can't Help it If I'm Still in Love With You" by B. J. Thomas. But, I did get a few hard to find tracks, which, like the other reviewer says, is all you would want to buy this for.
PS - "Get on Up" is listed as a track on Volume 1, which I also ordered and which hasn't yet arrived. Maybe it is "And Get Away"???
Mediocre in every sense of the word.......2004-04-14
Extremely disappointed in this one. I found the sound quality to be only marginally better than what I had on my existing 45's. The packaging is ugly and the feeble attempt at liner notes is an embarrassment. As another reviewer has already noted, they even managed to get the title on cut #16 wrong. How in the world does that happen? The correct title should be "Get On Up" by the Esquires. Only redeeming features on this one is that there are 26 cuts including a couple of tunes that are extremely hard to locate. I had not heard nor have I ever seen Jimmy Castors "Hey Leroy" since it charted back in '67. Other hard to find tunes include the aforementioned "Get On Up", Kenny O'Dells "Beautiful People" as well as the Hombres "Let It All Hang Out". Unless there are a bunch of songs you are really looking for on this disc I would skip this one for sure.

1966..Great year of songs........2007-01-05
All the hits and then some. Besides Winchester Cathedral and Wild Thing,
you can hear Loves makes the world go round and Double Shot, two one hit wonders that make you wonder why they did not go futher. Finally, i get to hear Walking my Cat named Dog by the obscure Norma Tanega, a folk-singer and party buddy to Dusty Springfield and Martha Reeves. I play this tape and Vol. 1 often and it probably has to do with graduating from middle school and entering Freshman year. Forever good tunes and Forever young.
If you're after the flavor of 1966 pop music, this is the CD you want!.......2006-03-25
1966 was a special year for me. That year many of my friends and I awaited being drafted, which almost certainly meant a tour in Viet Nam, an odyssey which began for me in August of that year. The songs on this CD are the ones that lightened the times for all of us in that era.
I'm a stickler for getting original recordings on CD, something which is getting rarer and rarer, especially with all the K-Tel and other releases consisting mostly of inferior sounding remakes. However, this CD seems to have all the original sounds I remember listening to in my first car (red '62 LeMans convertible) crusing around a year after graduating from high school. Additionally, there are several very-hard-to-find singles on this disc for which you'll pay a 'scalper' on this and other websites a lot of money for a rendition on another CD.
As to the fidelity, I can only say I'm very happy with the sound given the age of the original recordings. The Artwork and insert are minimal, but contain several interesting facts on some of the songs & artists represented on the CD. For example, it mentions the murder of the lead singer of the group who recorded "The Cheater," a song on this disc.
You won't be disappointed with this one. Well worth the price.

Chuck Berry - 'One Dozen Berrys / Jukebox Hits' (Beat Goes On).......2006-07-30
Another worthy 2-lp's-on-1-CD title from the UK label Beat Goes On.Here, you get Berry's second lp 'One Dozen Berrys'('58)and his fifth longplayer 'Jukebox Hits'('61).For the record(no pun intended, but those two albums were originally pressed on the famed Chess label).Total of 24 tracks.Good to listen to late on a summer night, cuts like "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Guitar Boogie", "Reelin'& Rockin'", "Rock And Roll Music", "Route 66", "Run Around" and several others. An absolute should-have, specially for the asking price.
The Bible .......2006-06-06
One Dozen Berrys was The Bible for all Brit rockers ..this collection contains stuff you cant get elsewhere .. "It Dont Take But A Few Minutes" for instance,a great example of his C&W stylings cannot be found anywhere on his current releases plus this set contains Rockin At The Philharmonic, and Ingo; two great rare instrumentals . This 'two- fer' is an interesting and welcome re-release from this British label BGO (Beat Goes On )Check out their other Chuck Berry two -fer releases
On the ballad side!.......2003-02-03
As far as I know, this album is the 1st C.B.-album recorded to be an album.. I mean, it's not a collection of singles and "fillers", the way it used to be in early days.
Many people don't know how many-sided Chuck really is, and this album is a good change to get familiar with his ballad side. There is some latin-feelings (13 question Method), gentle blues (Sweet 16, a song by B.B. King, not Chuck's original Sweet Little 16, as mentioned in the song list!!), jazzy pop-ballads(The Way It Was Before) and, of course, 3 or 4 rockers and everything from between... Some may say that girl-choruses in some songs could've been left out, it's maybe true, but it's a fact that this is the most focused, arranged and produced Chuck Berry record ever, and that makes it interesting. Soon after this record Chuck was thrown in jail for 1 and 1/2 years and after that his concentration was never the same what comes to recording sessions... ..or maybe his last studio-record, the great 1979 "Rock It", comes pretty close, who knows...
Highlight of this record is still a soft rocker "Route 66", I think it's one of Chuck's best ever... There is also a couple of throw away-songs, a silly pop-slower "Little Star" and an uninspired "straight from the sheet"-sounding reading of Little Richard's "Rip It Up"
To everyone interested in different dephts and shades of C.B. this is a good buy!

By now, the King of rock & roll's iconic vintage hits have been reconfigured so many times that it's hard to imagine anyone needing yet another Presley compilation. Still, this 23-song collection, programmed for maximum listenability, serves as a fine introduction to Elvis the rocker. With "Heartbreak Hotel," "Don't Be Cruel," "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "All Shook Up," "Suspicious Minds," "It's Now or Never," "A Big Hunk o' Love," "Too Much," "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear," "Good Luck Charm," "Hard Headed Woman," this is one primo party disc. With all these essential classics on a single disc, how can you go wrong? --Scott Schinder

Elvis Lives.......2007-06-26
This CD simply is what it purports to be: a collection of Elvis's most famous tunes from the jukeboxes and radios of the time he was active. No need to review songs. You know them all. Suffice to say this is an excellent CD for people who want an intro and overview of Elvis.
Elvis Presley - Greatest Jukebox Hits.......2006-03-20
He is still the King and maybe even better on CD. Timeless hits that make a great collection.
23 of the best from the king!!.......2006-02-10
This collection of Elvis Presley hit's is pure gold. It starts with tracks from his country rocking days at sun records ("Good rocking to night" and "Baby lets play house") through to his earth shattering "Heartbreak Hotel" (the song that made him a global superstar) right through other rock classics, such as "Hound Dog", "All Shook Up", "Jailhouse Rock", "Hard Headed Woman", "I Got Stung", "Big Hunk O' Love" and others as well as the ballads, such as "It's now or never", or "She's not you", right through to his latter recordings.
This CD is a great collection for the Presley/ Rock N Roll fan. It is also a great introduction for new people who want to check out his sound.
Slow delivery.......2005-09-27
I paid extra for fast delivery. It came later than my other
items that were ordered through regular mail.
A Wide Spectrum of Hits.......2005-05-11
I'd like to address the 2002 review from someone who'd never heard of some of these songs. (Really!) "Good Rockin' Tonight" was an early RCA hit; Wynonnie Harris, a black singer who had the young Elvis as a fan and performance attender, first did it. (In pre-rock history, trust me here, "rockin'" meant having sex in Black jargon. "I Got Stung" came from a backlog of recordings that Elvis made for release (so as not to be "forgotten") during his service in the Army (about the same time as "Now and Then, There's a Fool Such as I"). "She's Not You" was a hit single in 1962 backed with "Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello". And "Way Down"? C'mon! It was a hit single and was on the best-selling (after Elvis died) "Moody Blue" album. (Hear J.D. Sumner hit that double low-C at the end). Still, you can find these same hits elsewhere. Your choice.

Great!!!.......2003-11-08
This is what music use to be.I found this cd in the used section at the record store i shop at.This cd contains all the REAL songs that UB40 destroyed.Buy this cd every song on it is a joy to listen to.
Absolutley awesome.......2002-02-07
They dont get any better than this. I wish they had a part 2 of this album. I was never a big fan of UB40 till I picked up this album, and now I know why they remade all these songs. These are untouchable classics!! (And by the way, I'm only 21.... I wasnt even alive in 1975... )
Keeping it real!.......2000-11-17
This jukebox collection of hits from the original reggae artists between 1965-1975 are the songs that UB40 later recorded in their albums "Labor of Love 1 and 2". If you were around those years and can remember when reggae was just a music to dance to and listen to, then this CD is for you. Make ths CD a collector's item. Music like this is hard to come by in this age.

Customer Reviews:
Come on,enjoy !!.......2006-05-07
I noticed the hammered reviews of this product.
I am having a blast hearing the "redo's" of these great, great songs.
The only time I resent it is when they don't warn you in advance.
Course most of us old timers have all the originals anyway..
I am really enjoying it !
If you don't have all the originals by now...
forgetabouit !
You have missed the best music era of all time !
A blatant Time-Life rip off!.......2004-07-16
This is yet another Madacy collection of '50s and '60s oldies trying to imitate the overwhelming success of Time-Life's box sets. The only difference here is that almost none of the songs are the original recordings; almost everything are crappy re-recordings done some 20 or even 30 years later when the artist's voice wasn't in the best shape. My advise to you is to STAY AWAY from collections like these!!!!
100 Jukebox Hits: 50's & 60's.......2004-03-21
I purchased this Box set before from another merchant and returned it. These songs are not the originals.
Good Mix BUT..........2002-12-27
I enjoyed the selection of these many hits. You will recognize all the melodies and know most of the words. The production of these songs sounds still in their analog (not digital) and gives a verying quality from one song to another. Steve G
STAY AWAY, NOT THE ORIGINALS.......2001-11-13
Stay away from this freak show, a lot of these are not the ORIGINALS, the artists and titles are the same, but the songs are a "horror". I have all the original records on this CD, and I'll give you 2 examples, "Heartaches By The Number" by Guy Mitchell, and "Go Jimmy Go" by Jimmy Clanton, I don't know where they dug up these versions, but they're horrible. STAY AWAY!!!!
