Editorial Reviews
Label Comments
"Ceremonies" is a passionate blend of contemporary and ancient dance and rhythm that stays long after the music ends." (Richard Giles, Nexus New Times Magazine, "AUDIO")

These thoroughly contemporary songs of hope, of love lost and found, of mourning, celebration, and redemption are simply superb. "Ceremonies" is a winner! (Steve Ryals, New Age Retailer - "Fresh Tracks")

"... He is a talented and passionate pianist, something you can't miss ..." "...If you like exotic rhythms, this is for you. Fans of Shadowfax should be pleased with this recording, as will jazz hounds. The cross-pollination will probably teach both groups some new tricks -- and some new licks, too, I bet. (Bill Binkelman - Wind and Wire)

Former Shadowfax keyboardist Armen Chakmakian goes solo with this debut album, which opens with the lushly produced, flamenco-tinged "Gypsy Rain," showcasing his free-form chops. Chakmakian's effortless syncopations mesh seamlessly with the sounds of his Armenian heritage, and with Arabic, African and South American flavors. The celebratory, inspirational title track was inspired by a memorial service for Shadowfax founder Chuck Greenberg, who died in 1995, while "Enchantress" stretches out with Middle-Eastern arrangements.

While Chakmakian's haunting melodies and evident musicianship are the binding forces of "Ceremonies," he gives ample opportunity for his accompanying musicians to shine. Fellow Shadowfax members play on the album, and Alex de Grassi appears on acoustic guitar. Rich percussion and unusual instrumentation (duduk, zurna, tres) keep "Ceremonies" well away from the New Age cheese barrel; this smooth blend of ethnic sounds and jazz is a fine bit of contemporary world fusion. (Stacy Meyn - Rhythm Magazine)

"Impeccable perfection" are the words to describe this release, including the music, the packaging, and an all-star lineup of musicians... (Bette Timm, NAPRA Review - "What's New In Music")

Amazingly listenable! (Milwaukee Sentinel)

Armen Chakmakian got a strong positive reaction right out of the box. With so much pallid 'world music' being released, it's a pleasure to hear substantial work by a real artist. (Ken Ringlien - KZUM, Lincoln, NE)

4 out of 5 stars "If I had a huffy, you could ride the handlebars.".......2007-06-26

Dungeon Master of Ceremonies is a bit of a return to form for Chris. The skits are back and funny as ever, especially "The Package", about Chris arriving in Heaven and meeting Jesus. He continues to rap about whatever he wants; video games, drugs, himself, with geek references thrown all over the place. The album seems a bit more poppy and chorus-centric, but he never strays too far from his roots.

My favorite song is "Wiid", which has great rhyme scheme, lyrics, and beats. The preceding track, "Check the Ring, Yo" is a bit addicting too. "FTW" is a good opener, although it sounds better with the real music in the background, and that version isn't on the album. "Blastic" is a more pure hip-hop track with a nice sound. "OMC" features the return of Hallie Bullit, who does a lot of chorus vocals for Chris, and is a good song for shows. "Arulpragasam" is the next iteration of the more serious, wishful song that seems to appear on each record. It is one of many tracks that feature more actual music recorded specifically for the album instead of just beats made with Protools. It's interesting to see him branch out a bit and I'm looking forward to his next album which might be out by the end of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Off the hizzle for bliggle!.......2007-05-10

I'm not going to lie, I bootlegged your album mc. It was a dark time. However, in a twist of fate that would change my life, my beloved hard drive full of delicious illegal content was stricken down and all data was lost never to be seen again.

Fast forward about 6 months, I'm hittin' up my first mc chris show, and lo and behold, a beautiful merch table with several copies of DMoC layed out for my purchasing pleasure. I pick one up, get it signed by my main man Chris Ward, and slam it in my baby blue 1990 Pontiac Sunbird's CD player. I'm chillin, groovin to the music, skippin the skits because you know they're only funny twice, and then what happens?

BOOTIES FOR BREAKFAST!?!? ON MY DMOC?! NO WAY! I must be trippin! So, what I'm saying kids, is buy the CD get the bonus track, and support mc chris. Cause the man is off the hizzle for bliggle. And you know it.

3 out of 5 stars DMoC.......2007-01-10

MC Chris is a fine example of the Nerdcore genre of rap. His beats are original, his lyrics and flow are simply hilarious, but like most rappers, he is hit or miss. Some of the skits are overlong, but overall it's worth 10 dollars in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars A Step Beyond.......2006-10-23

mc chris has been at this game for a long, long time. I remember hearing a homemade tape of his about 10 years ago.

Which is why this record is such a treat for me. The first three tracks of the record have a real raw, gritty sound to them. He's backed by "real" (non-electronic) drums, a lowdown distortion-heavy bass, and a melodic yet powerful guitar. I imagine him with his punk rock buddies just kicking it low-fi/tech, and the results are amazing. Feel-good pop-punk sounding songs, with chris' signature hilarious self-deprecating and sarcasting rhymes delivered with his signature upper-octave style.

Another highlight is "PWOM" -- Chris' answer to AndrewWK's "Party Hard". A anthem for the ages that should be played at ANY (above-21) social setting.

This release also is VERY heavy on skits. Which work for the most part. mc chris in heaven meeting Jesus? A great concept to begin with, but it gets even funnier as Jesus shares with chris what we would all do if we had Jesus' powers.

Certainly, chris hasn't moved away from his hip-hop roots musically, musically. "Check the Ring" and "wiid" are the highlights here. Each has its own grooving vibe -- the former a dancefloor booty shaker, the latter a righteous chillout groove.

A great release that I've been listening to non-stop.

5 out of 5 stars Another triumph.......2006-10-21

The latest album from Nerdcore rapper mc chris (lowercase, no dots, rewind) features more of his signature sound: memorable beats, tight rhymes, comedy skits, and his infinitely memorable voice.

Rapping about subjects ranging from video games, to films, to partying, to illicit substance use, and rapper posturing, mc chris creates another winning album.

A note: Amazon.com lists track 6. as "Wild." It is, in fact, "Wiid." Also, there is a hidden track 14: a remix of "Booties For Breakfast."

I bought this recording a few years ago after hearing about it on National Public Radio. The monks vocal abilities are outstanding, it is truly ethereal. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dissolving The Visualization.......2005-10-12

"Awsome" is literally how you would describe the Tibetan ritual musics on this record, but then that word doesn't even come close. At times you can actually visualize the skull cracking open. "Auspicious Sounds Of Instruments In Nine Repetitions" in particuar is just amazing. It's probably where everything comes to a boil. Through the music you can really visualize how connected the Dip Tse Chok Ling monks are to various netherworlds. The monks use a wide range of instruments from the kangling(thighbone trumpet) and conchs to the monstrous longhorns. The percussion is quite intense as well, sounding like all manner of chaos descending in one fell plummet. This is not your typical world/new age music. This is intense, dissonant and unpredictable drone music for purposes of magick ritual. By the way it lurches one minute and soars the next, it's almost an entity unto itself.

4 out of 5 stars Rare recording of Tsar's Coronation.......2000-08-09

People who are interested in the Romanov dynasty will want to get a copy of his historic recording of Sibelius' Cantata for the coronation of Nicholas II. The sound is great and the performance is brisk and even a bit pushy at times. The notes that came with the recording say that this piece has never been performed since it was first given in 1896. It's an interesting piece and I am glad I bought the CD. The other selections on the CD are fun to listen to, charming, fresh and uplifting. I felt like running through a grassy meadow after listening to this CD! The performance of Finlandia seems to have been thrown in to help sales of the other selections on this CD which are all rare. Its' a good rendition.

4 out of 5 stars High quality field recordings.......2004-03-09

Field recordings made in the 1970s of traditional music from various locations in Ghana. The musicians are accomplished non-professionals. The repertoire is traditional. In these senses is the music is much closer to what one would hear at traditional gatherings (such as the installation of a new chief) than say that produced by professional folk musicians such as Mustapha Tettey Addy or Foday Musa Suso. The audio quality of these recordings is quite high, though on a number of tracks considerable incidental crowd noise is also audible - in some sense adding to documentation of the social context of these performances. The Smithsonian CD "Rhythms of life, Songs of Wisdom" is similar but more stylistically diverse, including local brass bands, for example. Instruments played in these recordings include the axatse (a gourd rattle), dzil and chohun (similar to a xylophone or marimba), donno (talking drum), gonje (single stringed bowed lute), gyamadudu (bass drum), mpintintoa (single headed gourd drum), namuma (animal horn trumpet), wiik (flute). Number of tracks also feature vocals in local languages.
