4 out of 5 stars One of Adrian Belew's better CD's........2006-12-15

Released in 1990, this is Adrian Belew's fifth solo CD. It is 38 minutes long and the sound quality is very good.

Adrian Belew is an excellent, innovative and interesting performer/guitarist. He has added a lot to the groups he has played with, including Frank Zappa (in on of Zappa's best bands), King Crimson, David Bowie and the Talking Heads. But, his solo CD's have not always been great, with only a few good songs and some "unbearable" moments. However, this CD has a few great songs and nothing really bad.

He does two songs with David Bowie, Pretty Pink Rose and Gunman, which are both very good. Pretty Pink Rose is one of Belew's best songs of all time.

There are some other very good songs, like the funky, discordant I Am What I Am.

The CD has some songs that I would call filler. There is an unnecessary version of Heartbeat that he played with King Crimson. It is basically the same as the King Crimson version, but I don't think quite as good. Then there is a version of the Traveling Wilbury's Not Alone Anymore, where Belew tries to sound like Roy Orbison. He doesn't quite make it. Taken by themselves, these are pretty good songs and performances, but they aren't as good as the originals.

There are songs that are basic pop, like Looking For A UFO and Small World. They are horrible but are not the best things Belew has done.

All in all this is a fairly good CD throughout. My favorite is still his first, Lone Rhino.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-09-26

This CD is my first time hearing this artist. I wouldn't have described myself as an aficionado of progressive rock before now, but I really loved this cd. It rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-08-02

Actually a 4.5 some filler but all in all very unique and very entertaining. Some of his best stuff is here,it's a cross between a pop and weird prog, well he was with the king of this genre,Zappa. This deserves to be among his best work yet.

5 out of 5 stars "When great big cadillacs roamed the Earth".......2005-07-13

The standout in his catalog, Adrian Belew's "Young Lions" successfully finds common ground between Belew's pop and progressive leanings. It is also I feel the record where Belew began to establish his identity unique of his past collaborators-- the overt King Crimson and Talking Heads influences on his sound had finally been assimulated without shining as brightly as they had in the past.

The album is all over the place, the common thread being Belew's monster guitar playing and fantastic songwriting-- from tribal churning ("Young Lions") to delicate pop "Looking For a U.F.O."), eco-conscious rock ("Men in Helicopters"), ballads ("Phone Call to the Moon") and duets with David Bowie (the explosive "Pretty Pink Rose") and some crazy radio guy ("I Am What I Am"), the album covers a lot of ground. The important thing is that, quite frankly, everything is really, REALLY good. Witty lyrics, clever arrangements, and phenomenal guitar.

This is the place to begin investigating Belew's catalog. If you're already listening and you don't have it, get ahold of this-- its essential material. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC.......2005-04-24

THIS ALBUM IS GREAT! THIS ONE IS NOT AS PROGRESSIVE AS SOME OF HIS OTHER WORKS BUT IT IS AN ENJOYABLE LISTEN. YOUNG LIONS GETS THE CD OFF TO A GREAT START AND PRETTY PINK ROSE WITH DAVID BOWIE IS EXCELLENT. NOT ALONE ANYMORE IS A TOUCHING TRIBUTE TO ORBISON. BELEW IS A FIRST RATE MUSICIAN- CHECK OUT HIS OTHER SOLO ALBUMS SUCH AS HERE AND INNER REVOLUTION. AND OFCOURSE, CHECK OUT KING CRIMSON.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Jazz CD I own........2004-08-21

Lions & Tigers & Brubeck, oh my! I came accross this as study music during all-nighters before finals in college. An old roommate had a copy. After 10 years, I got it myself because I couldn't forget it. That there's so few reviews is really sad & shows that it's far too unsung. If you've read this far, buy it now! You will find righteous spine tingling rythym from and for the soul.

4 out of 5 stars Duets, basically, but mostly wonderful ones..........2003-12-12

Here's another "Brubeck in old age" CD which in another era, when new jazz releases actually garnered mainstream attention, would have sold wonderfully well. For this 1995 product on the Telarc label, Dave wrote themes for each of his 10 guests. The resulting 63 minutes are almost totally fine. The contributing artists include Roy Hargrove on trumpet, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman and James Moody, all on tenor saxophones, Christian McBride on bass, George Shearing on piano, Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax, and Ronnie Buttacavoli on flugelhorn. Jack Six on bass and Randy Jones on drums accompany most of the tunes. The only weak moments come in the two vocal selections. For one of them, veteran scat singer Jon Hendricks does a super-straight, super-slow, super-short version of "How High the Moon" and on the other, James Moody adds some singing to the nearly seven-minute Brubeck composition called "Moody" in his honor. The vocals aren't terrible, but just do not hold up to the 10 instrumental tunes, and that's why I give this four stars instead of five. The disc is mostly mellow, but never is it just so-called smooth jazz, or boring, or fit only for background sound. If you are a fan of Dave's, this is a worthwhile late-career effort, featuring original compositions except for two tracks, and a lot of emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of songs.......2003-05-22

This album is one of brubeck's finest collection compositions. It is really a classical jazz album, all the songs have a feeling that can grab you. Brubeck plays with his old friends with so much cohesion, that it can't be beaten. Turn off the light and at the evening in a gloomy room with a quality sound system you can really dig deep into the music, and the music wil dig deep into you as well. Try it with a glass of wine, and you reached sonic nirvana. One of my all time favourite album. And for the twist of it, I'am also young, like the previous reviewer, only 22. Try it!

5 out of 5 stars Dave does it again with some old friends and some young bloo.......2001-09-16

Is this man one of the greatest musicians of all time or what? Think about it for a moment. The man is eighty-something years old and still just as good, if not better than anyone that we hear on those new "smooth" jazz radio stations.
Let me start by saying that this album is a must-own for every Dave fan. It contains extraordinary compositions by Dave in tribute to all who worked with him. I got a bit sentimental when he and George Shearing played an emotional version of "In Your Own Sweet Way.," Dave's most covered piece. He also calls upon old friend Gerry Mulligan to play a duet called "Together." But he and Gerry didn't stop there either. They then team up with Dave's son Chris on Bass, and current DBQ drummer, Randy Jones to play the youthful "Gerry-Go-Round." There are so many other tracks I could go on about, ... ... probably won't let me. One more thing before I go though...I'm a huge Dave Brubeck fan, and I'm only eighteen years old! So if I can be convinced by this man's genius, ANYONE can be!

5 out of 5 stars Beware of these cubs !.......2000-09-17

This CD, recorded in 1960, is a group-effort by a one-off band made up of Lee Morgan (trumpet), Frank Strozier (alto), Wayne Shorter (tenor), Bobby Timmons (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Louis Hayes and Albert "Tootie" Heath alternatively on drums. The group is young and energetic, and they play with fire and imagination. Four tunes are composed by Wayne Shorter, one by Lee Morgan. Three alternate takes beef up the CD playing time. All involved went on to impressive careers and multiple recording credits, with the exception of altoist Frank Strozier, who oddly enough has fallen by the wayside. Oddly enough, because he is more than on a par with the others in this company, but his promising start never materialised into a great career. A worthy reissue of a great album by a great band. Any fan of early 1960's hardbop in the traditional Blue Note-style will enjoy this CD.

A super compilation of the today's top players. Overall, I'd say the choices for the horn players (Harrison, Jackson, Hart) are a bit more inspired than for the keyboard (Perez, Roberts), but the CD has the pacing and a feeling of "wholeness" as if it were a soundtrack for a great jazz flick. Maybe they should make such a flick...

4 out of 5 stars Solid and Different Compilation. . ........2006-01-18

And the reggae compilation wheel continues to spin at nearly light speed. If you can keep up, then you're a better music fan than I am. Dancehall compilations, roots compilations, mixes, oldies, ska, lover's rock, rasio stations. . . The list goes on and on and it takes the most discerning consumer to pick the best material worth his/her money.

UK reggae giant label Jet Star has managed to stay at or near the top of the compilation race for a few years. They typically focus on the modern roots side of things and it doesn't get more modern than their Young Lions compilation. This installment, Vol. 2 (presumably the second of very very very many), features up and coming artists, Turbulence, Jah Mason, Fantan Mojah and Bascom X.

X is by far the oddball hear. The other 3 artists having been more and more established and having albums; Mojah with his debut on the streets just last year, Jah Mason with 5 and Turbulence (at least at last count) had a whopping 12. So it is odd that the biggest boomshot of all the 14 tracks here comes from said freshman X. Farmer Brown is a beautiful story-like tune which shows the singjay in a style somewhat reminiscent of artists such as Turbulence and Sizzla.

The strongest consistent showing on the album is easily by Mason who drops the most tunes (5) of any of the artist, and all of them are very fine, with perhaps the best being My Way (although Acres and Acres is very good). Fantan Mojah scores his best effort, easily, on Hard Nut to Crack (and somewhere the Silky one is smiling and bobbing his head). Turbulence shows his best on Stay Strong (which features wonderful singer Jahmali) over the resurrected Dis Ya Time riddim. Also check X's Badmind and Mojah's Don't Bow Out from his debut album Hail the King.

Overall, judge this compilation based on the artist's involved alone. If you're a fan of them, scoop it up, none disappoint in the slightest and both Bascom X and Jah Mason consistently impress, and Turbulence and Mojah aren't too far behind. I actually do like the concept and plan to pick up Vol 1 (which featured Richie Spice, I Wayne, Chuck Fenda and Jah Cure). Making something like this which doesn't feature the constant names you find on such comps (although Turbulence is slowly but surely inching into that category) was a pretty good idea by Jet Star.
