Customer Reviews:
Alan Hovhaness and some very big friends.......2007-02-04
This is a brilliant work combining the compositional artistry of Alan Hovhaness with the music from the orchestra of the sea, the great whales themselves. To be listened to over and over again as there are always some new nuances that won't have been heard on previous visits.
M.M. version mediocre; St. Gregory performance Excellent........2006-07-21
Of the two pieces I care most about on this recording, my ears received them very differently.
On a positive note, the performance of St. Gregory's Prayer is transcendentally beautiful... liquid joy... outstanding.
I'm less enthusiastic about the Seattle Symphony's reproduction of the Mysterious Mountain here. Perhaps I am biased in favor of Fritz Reiner's Chicago interpretation, having heard that many times first. Regardless, I think a lot of listeners would have to agree with me that this Seattle production truly rushes through the suite, barely sampling the incredible potential of the composition. They simply move through it much too fast. So much of the power of Mysterious Mountain is intimately linked to its cadence, and to rush a piece like this is to drain it of most of its glory. The rendition excels technically, but the spirit comes out flat.
St. Gregory's Prayer is worth the purchase of this disc, but for a better Mountain, get the Chicago recording.
As for Great Whales, there's something good in hearing a symphony with the Pacific Ocean at its doorstep waxing Cetacean. Unfortunately this poetic justice does not suffice to make this piece worth frequent listening. It does succeed as a curiosity and a nice jog of the ear if you've fallen into a rut.
Entering the Realm of Alan Hovhaness.......2006-06-16
Like other reviewers here, I flipped on the radio one night & caught the tail-end of "Mysterious Mountain" and was thunderstruck by the beauty pouring out of my speakers. I strained to catch the name of the composition and the composer: Alan Hovhaness...Mysterious Mountain. That night was a revelation to me and the beginning of my explorations into the musical realm of Mr. Hovhaness. Several CD's later, I still return to this one. All of the selections here are wonderful with the possible exception of the composition, "And God Created The Great Whales"... I have never been able to latch onto that one, but that is just me. Otherwise, this CD is absolutely superb; the music is richly textured and satisfying. Highly recommended.
A Stimulating Hovhaness Sampler.......2006-05-04
Boy, it's amazing how different sets of ears hear things differently! I was just musing on the purity of sound that the Seattle strings are able to produce on this disc, nimble and without the heaviness that some more famous string bodies under certain conductors (say, Philadelphia under Ormandy or Sawallisch) would proffer. And I was further thinking that Delos' clean, clear recording was a big help, especially in the "Prayer to Saint Anthony," where the lonely sound of solo trumpet is etched against the accompanying strings. Then I read the comments by others on this page and am amazed to read that some think the sound on this disc "tinny...muddy." Obviously, I don't agree.
As to the performances, Schwarz seems to me a master Hovhaness interpreter, as other performances from Seattle and elsewhere have proved. I, too, recall the classic recording of "Mysterious Mountain" with Reiner, and I think Schwarz yields nothing to Reiner in terms of depth of feeling or any other musical criteria. Schwarz's is a lovely performance, with all the required mystery and majesty of this seminal piece intact.
In other hands than Hovhaness's, "God Created Great Whales" could have emerged as a one-trick pony of a piece. I happen to think that Rautavaara's "Cantus Arcticus," mentioned by at least one other reviewer, comes far closer to this downfall. I find that Rautavaara's music is no more or less interesting than, nor does it shed special light on, the recorded bird sounds in his piece. As you can guess, I'm not a great admirer of the Finnish composer. But Hovhaness manages to mirror the sounds of the whales, in both the strings and brass (hard feat!) in such a way that we come to appreciate the remarkable communicativeness of these great beasts of the sea. At least I do. Plus, the technique that Hovhaness employs--a rare foray into aleatory music--is in the service of the work's program: the emergence of the earth from primordial chaos.
Of the other pieces on this disc, I find "Prelude and Quadruple Fugue" the most memorable. A dry, pedantic name perhaps, but not a dry piece: the fugue manages to be both very traditional and very modern, which is true of Hovhaness's best music. As I say, Schwarz, Seattle, and Delos all do Hovhaness full justice on this CD.
Hovhaness Is An American Original.......2006-03-27
Alan Hovhaness is probably one of the most underrated, unappreciated composers this country has ever produced. How unappreciated? I've been a passionate lover of classical music for fifteen years, took a few courses in my undergrad years on music theory and the history of music in the West, have been a season ticket holder in more than one city's philharmonic/orchestras, and it was not until about five years ago that I heard of Hovhaness--and even then it was only because I so happen to listen to his Symphony No. 2 (`Mysterious Mountain') on a local public radio station during classical music hour.
The first time I heard `Mysterious Mountain,' I almost mistook it for Dvorak or Smetana. Hovhaness might have lived in the 20th century, but his compositional approach and philosophy was very much in the mold of the 19th century romantics. It is grandiose in style, haunting and yet beautifully majestic in sound, and it never ceases to amaze me every time I listen to it.
The remaining pieces of music, particularly the Prayer of St. Gregory and Alleluia and Fugue, betray Hovhaness's earlier work as a composer of music (and organist) for the Armenian Church. It surprises me still that more of his music is not played, although he is best known for Mysterious Mountain (a symphony that was composed and premiered in 1955). This CD itself is an excellent addition to any classical music collection and a must for anyone wanting to discover more about American composers.

It doesn't get better than this........2001-08-01
I first bought this recording on vinyl back in 1975. Gerard Schwartz has since moved on to a career in conducting, but as this recording shows, he's a true Master of his craft. I'm a trumpet player and I know what a good sound is. This guy's got it!
More than technical perfection, the tunes are delivered with delicacy, grace and power.
starting over.......2001-07-03
This is a very good cd for a trumpet player. Many songs of Herbert L. Clarke and Jean Babtiste Arban are there in their familiar versions. If you get this cd, you ought to get Cornet Favorites also. The solos on both cd's stick to the versions found in Arban's Complete Conservatory Method and Clarke's 24 Charateristic Studies, so you can follow them note for note. Carnaval has wind symphony accompaniment and Cornet Favorites has piano accompaniment.
starting over.......2001-07-03
If you have the Arban Complete Conservatory Method and Herbert Clarke's 24 Characteristic Studies, then you have the versions of the solos that are played on this cd, and can benefit from hearing them played. All songs use piano accompaniment so you will have no trouble hearing the cornet. Carnaval (Winton Marsalis) has some of the same songs, but the cornet is harder to hear because of the wind symphony accompniment.
excellence.......2000-05-30
This is the best verison of Carnival I have heard. Classic Wynton also provides a fantastic interpretation on the most difficult trumpet solo of all time. But Schwarz shows amazing control, fantastic percision, and baffling dexterity. The Debutante and the Bride, etc. are also impressive. Its a shame Schwarz gave up trumpet to conduct. Having played these songs myself, I definitely recommend it to any classical trumpet enthusiast/student
Cornet Favorites.......1999-12-28
I enjoyed the cd because of the literature being performed. However, Schwarz's performance is mediocre and lacks luster. The sound is dull and uninviteing. The tempos were unusal and it felt there was no ensemble with the trumpet and piano performance.
I felt there was not a musical product produced in this recording.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect for the Season.......2005-11-19
I purchased this years ago and the enjoyment has grown every Christmas. Handel's Messiah is beautiful, The Nutcracker is a classic and the arrangement of hymns conveys the true wonders of the season. While there is a place for pop carols, these classics should be in every Christian's music library. I loved this so much, I actually purchased a complete replacement set when I lost one of the discs. Certainly an excellent value that any music lover would treasure.
FOR WHISTLING OR SINGING ALONG.......2003-12-28
The gifted Richard Hayman (Boston Pops arranger for more than 30 years) offers an interesting collection of holiday favourites. The back cover says "Orchestra and Chorus" - beware, there is no chorus. The sub-title "Philharmomic Symphony Orchestra" is rather pedantic. Why not simply "Richard Hayman and His Orchestra"? The opening and closing numbers are sing-along medleys... the liner notes offer the words. Two Leroy Anderson numbers receive a fair treatment: SLEIGH RIDE and SONG OF THE BELLS, the latter being played rrather slowly. There is a beautiful rendition of MUSIC BOX DANCER, the only version I know that uses the music box. The counter-melody is too loud and takes away the charm of the main theme. A few compositions by the conductor himself. A great collection for tree-trimming, whistling or singing along.

frat boy stuff? you should be ashamed!.......2004-08-21
"foxy music" has to be one of the most unique and jaw dropping albums i have heard in quite a while. the experimentation and unoriginality is astounding. i couldn't believe my ears when i heard this album. every track is different unlike other albums out there.
i have read some reviews that have labeled this album as frat boy music. frat boy music? FRAT BOY MUSIC!?! this is far from anything that could be labeled as frat boy music. whatever that means? and i have an idea. it seems like whoever deems this as frat music needs to reexamine this album and probably their own collection because it seems they wouldn't know creativity and experimentation, along with rhythm and groove, if it came and slapped them in their face.
this album is full of everything that makes an album GREAT. musicianship. creativeness. unfrightened of experimentation. uniqueness. groove. harmony. rhythm. and yes, you could probably even dance to it, even though i won't be able to because i will be too busy trying to discover all the rich layers throughout each song.
for anyone who is buying this, get ready to have your mind blown. for anyone considering buying it, cherish it and get some more. for those who don't like something original, go to search and type in N'Sync.
ugh. More of the same white boy frat funk baloney.......2004-04-10
I picked this up on the recommendation of other reviewers here at amazon. What an incredible disappointment. They may have studied their record collections well enough but the end result is nothing more than a collection of really unoriginal, posturing "groove rock" that's no better than some ivy league Grand Cherokee ski bum act. Simply awful.
I Just Stumbled On This One.......2002-03-12
So I saw this CD in a store and read the back and I thought it looked pretty cool. I decided to buy it and was completely amazed at what I heard. It has a really cool electric jazz 70's sound with a 21st century edge to it. Definetely worth getting if you are looking for something new and a lot of fun to listen to.

Following up their CD of remixes, this is a 12 song CD of all new Mushroom songs and recordings. The band now features maverick trumpeter Jon Birdsong (known for his performances with Beck and Beth Orton), percussionist Dave Mihaly, Carroll Ashby on trombone, and guitarist Josh Pollock. Long time Mushroom members: drummer Patrick O'Hearn, guitar / sax / fluteman Erik Pearson, keyboard whiz Michael Holt and bassist Kurt Statham remain. Also aboard are some special guests including Hammond organ master Michael Bluestein (Will Bernard & Motherbug).
Recently profiled in Down Beat, who compared Mushroom to Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and Miles Davis' Big Fun album. The band has also received praise from Mojo, who said: "Some of the best space jams heard since Loop and The Spacemen 3". Ptolemaic Terrascope: "combine the Canterbury sound and an ability to blow like Miles or Coltrane with certain overtones of some of the greatest Krautrock bands". San Francisco Bay Guardian:
"Think of the German art rock band Can, the electric Herbie Hancock, James Blood Ulmer, the Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East and just the idea of the Fillmore East" I could'nt say it any better myself.

These 26 selections, recorded from 1904 to 1922, document the work of an important American player and band composer. Despite the trivial nature of most of the music, one can't help listening to Herbert Clarke's playing with respect and growing affection. He was a most elegant player, with a beautiful tone that comes across even in the earliest of these recordings. The showiest pieces, which can be quite dazzling, are still performed with taste and musicianship. This disc is an important sound document, and the transfers from even the earliest of the recordings are surprisingly listenable. Highly recommended to all brass and nostalgia lovers. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant playing transcending primitive recording technique.......2001-01-11
Hearing this CD -- despite the distracting surface noise from the primative acoustic recordings from which this CD was remastered -- I appreciate for the first time the greatness of Clarke as a cornet soloist. If he is not the greatest to date, he is surely one of the giants upon whose shoulders modern virtuosi of the trumpet (which has pretty much replaced the cornet) stand.
Clarke's sheer artistry in both composition and performance still dazzle and his interpretive ability brings to life some of the 'tear jerkers' of the golden age of popular brass music in a way no modern performance comes close to.
Although on first hearing one could be very much distracted by the primitive recordings, the brass player soon focuses on Clarke's playing so completely that the the surface noise disappears.
Every trumpet player and cornetist, more, every brass player and lover of band music, should own a copy.
The Master of the Cornet.......2001-01-04
God bless Crystal Records for taking the time to re-issue these extremely rare and valuable recordings from an unfortunately neglected giant in American musical history. Most people today don't realise how famous and influential Mr. Clarke and his peers (Sousa, Pryor et. al.)were on the American musical scene at the beginning of the Twentieth century. It is very important that these recordings (and others from this period, the birth of sound recording) be preserved for future generations.
As for those who could not stand the "hiss" on these recordings, how spoiled can you be? You simply miss the point of all this. We all know that these records were made during the infancy of the recording industry, and that they didn't have the technology we now have. I find it thrilling to listen to them just as they are. Recorded sound is the closest we have to time travel, and I find it fascinating to listen to these recordings as though I was there when they were first made. And most of all, through the marvel of recorded sound (Mr. Sousa notwithstanding) I can listen today to the greatest cornetist who ever lived, even though he passed away over 50 years ago.
Hopefully Crystal Records will someday put out an anthology of original Sousa and Pryor Band recordings.
Clarke is the cornet master!.......2000-08-03
Herbert Clarke is the finest cornetist the planet has ever seen. The technical brilliance on Carnival is just breathtaking. The sound quality of the recording is little hinderance on the true genius behind this man's playing. Don't let the hiss bother you!!!
heartbreaking music from a bygone era.......2000-03-22
These vintage recordings would have been otherwise lost to us--and a great loss at that. Clarke plays so beautifully, esp. those pieces that he wrote. It's notall oom-paa-paa, but music that is deeply affecting and stirring. This is the effect that Wynton Marsalis was going for in his "Carneval." While Marsalis's album is a wonderful tribute, this is the original. A must-have for any serious trumpet player.
Be careful.......1999-09-14
Watch out if you want to buy this cd! It's a good cd with Herbert Clarke playing some of his own pieces the way they should be played...but the recording is TERRIBLE! Naturally, it's a 1904 recording! But the hiss for the first half of the cd is almost painful. It's NOT something you can just ignore, so don't be caught unawares.

Who's gonna review this album or what?.......2004-12-29
I see nobody paying attention what I'm sayin. I asking everbody for that new reviewers or one-star reviewers alike should stay focused of buying or rating this album as a superior 2 date. I see everybody saying this is what I wanna listen to or this is what I wanted right here. Anyway, I actually read about this guy on a gospel/Christian magazine one time and seems 2 be the one I need to add on my trumpet list. He sure plays gospel pretty well and recommend u check him out like u do with the other trumpet players of today...Rick Braun, Chris Botti, Miles Davis, Chuck Mangione, Al Hirt, Maynard Ferguson, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Art Farmer, Herb Alpert, etc.

Customer Reviews:
Indescribably beautiful music, superlative performances........2005-09-06
This CD was hard to find. After a few months of searching, I decided to buy `gently used.' But I am not sorry at all. I very much wanted to hear more of Sviridov's music, having absorbed the thrilling Petersburg song cycle, also performed by these two extraordinary musicians.
Let me say first that Sviridov's music truly drives both performances. Long a fan of pianist Mikhail Arkadiev, I was surprised by what I heard. His playing is always superb, but on this CD, he is beyond inspired.
This sentiment goes double for Dmitri Hvorostovsky, whose interpretation of Russia Cast Adrift has been criticized in the past. I was very moved by his work here. His artistry is always amazing, but the depth of his interpretation is such that I can barely explain how or what I feel when I listen to it. His voice is superb, his performance flawless, his talent seemingly without boundary. An original, unique, and singular vocalist.
If you can find this CD, buy it at any cost. Otherwise, you will be missing out on something very special indeed.
One of Hvorostovsky's best.......2004-12-15
Hvorostovsky is in terrific form here, bringing a compelling intensity to these often-anguished Sviridov songs. While many music lovers may initially be drawn to the more accessible Rachmaninov songs, it's the Sviridov cycle that ultimately stands out here. Enhanced by Hvorostovsky's dark timbre and sensitive phrasing, songs such as The Owl and the riveting Milky Way emerge as profoundly haunting miniature masterpieces. Shortly after this recording was made, the octogenarian Sviridov (1915-1998) would write another song cycle - this time expressly for the great Hvorostovsky: the equally memorable Petersburg - a Vocal Poem, released on the Delos label in 2004.
Come for the Rachmaninov and stay for the Sviridov!.......1999-06-06
The world of music should be grateful that the late Georgi Sviridov found such an invincible champion for his stunning and yet accessible song cycles. Even with uncharted repertoire Hvorostovsky does a painstaking job and never disappoints the listener. Mikhail Arkadiev works magic with the often episodic piano accompaniments, which sound by no means easy. Of course the Rachmaninov is very nice, like a refreshing salad before a scrumptious main course. But the Sviridov deserves a wide audience. It is to be hoped as of this posting that his cycle 'Petersburg' (a foundation stone of Hvorostovsky's latest recital tour program) will also be recorded in its entirety.
