The British-born bassist, composer, and bandleader Dave Holland was a key figure in Miles Davis's high-flying fusion groups of the '60s and '70s. He's played with everyone from Herbie Hancock to Chick Corea, and many young lions such as Steve Coleman and Tonight Show drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith played in his bands in the '80s. This splendid CD teams Holland with alto/soprano/tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, the marvelous vibraphonist Steve Nelson, trombonist Robin Eubanks, and drummer Billy Kilson. Holland is an inventive and engaging composer, and he arguably has the deepest bass sound in the music. Everything he writes swings and grooves--from the dancing Afro-Caribbean-tinged numbers "Global Citizen" and "Lost and Found" to the exotic Saharan syncopations on "Shifting Sands" to the rapid-fire tempo on "Cosmosis." Sonically embellished by Potter's elliptical solos, Nelson's shimmering lines, Eubanks bravado 'bone bursts, and Kilson's rhythmic labyrinths, Dave Holland's sure-handed bass tones lay the foundation for some good jazz music. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2005-10-11
I bought this on the strength of the opening cut, which I had heard a few times recently on XM radio. The rest of the CD is just as good as the opener. Anybody wondering about the viability of the jazz scene today should pick this up--the music is outstanding.
Great Innovative Jazz.......2005-08-29
This is a very exciting album. The writting on it is very intelligent. The polyphonic playing between Eubanks and Potter on Shifting Sands is great. All the tunes are well thought out and well executed. Eubanks' writting on Global Citizen is excellent. For All You Are is a great ballad. Billows of Rhythm is exciting and funky. The title track is also a good funky tune using rhythm very effectively. The whole album is a great example of how Holland and his quintet play with rhythm and beat cycles. The music is fresh and innovative.
The improvisation is very exciting as well. All the players are very well accomplished and build creative, well developed solos. Steve Nelson's vibraphone and mirimba work is incredible. He has a lot of speed and great ideas. Dave Holland's bass work is great. His open bass solo on Global Citizen is incredible. It's fun not just to hear Eubanks and Potter solo together, but to hear them improvise collectively. They do great work together on the title track. Their work on their own is mind blowing as well. Eubanks' multi-phonics in his soloing is amazing and Potter's solos are unbelievably creative. Billy Kilson's drumming is unbelivable as well. Anyone that can decifer the puzzling rhythms that he deals out has my hat off to them. The players are are all monsters and they make for a great listening experience.
The collective work on the album is great. Every player is complementing the soloist making them sound even better than they already are. The rhythm section helps build with the soloist. It makes for a very intellegent performance. In short this album is worth every penny. You will hear something new and exciting every time you listen to it. It's truly a treat. Any lover of contemporary jazz or supporter of musicians trying to do something outside the norm will enjoy this album entirely.
ONE DIMENSIONAL-- TOO LIMITED.......2004-12-10
Reading the glowing reviews of others, I can't believe we're listening to the same CD. My problem is that the vibraphone by its nature sucks all the attention in its direction. Hence the very limitations of the instrument boxes in the rest of the band. I don't care how many mallets are stuck between the fingers the sound is one-dimensional. It is a serious mistake to let this particular instrument dominate an entire album. Most people find the sound of the vibraphone pleasing at first only to tune out later. This is a shame in that this is obviously a quality effort on the part of the band.
I'm sorry. All the pieces run into each other and I had the repeated problem having my attention drift to other matters ("I wonder how many pencils DO I have?"). Mr. Holland should have mixed things up more.
NOT ENOUGH SUPERLATIVES..........2004-07-26
This album is absolutely one of the best jazz recordings I've ever heard - I've had it for over a month now, and after repeated listenings, I'm nowhere NEAR being tired of it. On this, the third studio album from this quintet, the musicians play more and more as a cohesive unit, without ever losing their individuality. This band is quite possibly the perfect jazz ensemble - original, adventurous, melodic, energetic, improvisational without being cacophonous, and always, always, reaching beyond where they stand to explore and stake out new musical territory.
ECM delivers their always-stellar production values here in a package that has quantity AND quality - at nearly 73 minutes, the band takes full advantage of the digital medium without a single second of filler. From the opening rhythms of 'Global citizen' (I've yet to decipher the time signature - I get started counting and lose myself in the beauty of the piece) to the full-group interplay that ends 'Cosmosis', every time I listen to this disc I find myself shaking my head and smiling in wonder at its consistent perfection. The compositions - by Holland and the other group members - are all first-rate, and the incredible weaving of melodies by the various instruments is done at such a level of expertise and grace that it'll keep the listener's attention with no problem for the length of the set.
This is simply fine, stunningly performed music - by some of the best players on the jazz scene. If you've missed Holland's work for the past several years, check this out - as well as PRIME DIRECTIVE and POINTS OF VIEW (the two earlier studio albums). The amazing EXTENDED PLAY: LIVE AT BIRDLAND is a great document of this group in a live setting. Also essential is WHAT GOES AROUND, featuring the Quintet expanded into a big band.
Great music - highest recommendation!
Pretty good, but not like the "live" version..........2003-10-06
This band is a great but the songs are a bit too perfect here in the studio... I suggest getting the double CD called "Extended Play" featuring the same line-up with a much improved performance... Here the songs lack the alertness of that the live performance brings out... Over all, still a pretty good album though... Especially track 6!

Customer Reviews:
American Song Potpourri.......2000-08-01
The 28 songs on this CD provide a broad spectrum of American art songs. JanDeGaetani possesses a beautiful mezzo-soprano voice and ideally expresses the proper emotions these songs require. Gilbert Kalish's piano supplies the necessary support without getting in the way of the singer. All in all, this is a good collaboration.
Kalish plays like a pig........1999-12-02
While I enjoyed De Gaetani's singing, Kalish's piano playing reminded me of a player piano.
a beautiful rendition of 20th Century American Song.......1999-06-06
This is a great album. It spans the spectrum of 20th Century American music from the tonality and romanticism of Stephen Foster to the experimentality of John Cage.
Jan DeGaetani and Gilbert Kalish, with their understanding and sensitivity to the music of their time, combine to form a duo that sets the standard for interpretation of this music.
Students, professionals, and general classical music lovers will cherish this CD in their library.
If you want an introduction to American Music of this Century, this album provides the most accessible doorway to the widest array of styles I have heard.
