About the Artist
Dorothy Collins started singing shortly after she came into this world. Her musical experience ranges from classical to gospel to jazz, and more. Dorothy performs regularly at jazz clubs in Southern California (Restaurant Kikuya, Steamers Cafe, Spaghettini Jazz Club and Grill, and other popular venues).

My favorite sacred sax album! This is a very well done CD. Lots of great old songs, jazzed up just right. You'll hear some great gospel influence and even some pretty good bop licks on this one. Much meatier than just a smooth jazz disc. Great piano by George Duke as well. This is one I can leave in the player for weeks at a time.

I'd first heard this cd at a get together among friends, but I like it even better now that I've really had a chance to get into it. These traditional selections will remind you of Sundays with your grandmother waaaaay back in the day. This work is smooth and stylish while being reverent and nostalgic. This is one I'm likely to play over and over and over again...

A friend turned me on to Mr. Whalum by giving me a "thank you" gift of the CD "The Gospel According to Jazz". Later I received "Hymns in the Garden". This CD does so much to lift my soul. I often hum along and praise God right along with Kirk. I literally play it every day for over a year now and I'm not close to tiring of it. God bless you Kirk, for being such a blessing to me.

Kirk Whalum is one of the last big-toned tenor saxophonists. He plays a collection of Gospel songs backed most of the time only by a rhythm section. Several songs are memorable: I will trust in the LOrd, Christ is all, Precious Lord, He's sweet I know-He knows how much you can bear, and I must tell Jesus (great preaching on that one !).Whalum gets the right feeling from start to beginning.

Nice work on some difficult music. People who purport to have a golden ear or "know music" or even worse, "know Jarrett's work", will think this music boring, and well should pass it on for something mundane. Otherwise a mesmerizing work. On the downside, it flows better on an LP.

3 out of 5 stars The Gurdjieff Legacy Languishes.......2005-10-06

Not being privvy to the motivations of this ECM session one can only speculate about its swift and meagre outcomes. Jarrett had attained star status at the time and, as a self-declared student of the Gurdjieff Work, must have been prompted to commit his interpretation of De Hartmann's deeply moving music to acetate. Perhaps there was a prod from within the Gurdjieff oraganization, riding on Jarrett's reputation, to place an enticing carrot before a wider public. About the same time, we had Peter Brook's film,'Meetings with Remarkable Men', with a glimpse of the Paris chapter of Gurdjieff adherents performing sacred dances tacked to the ending of the original cut. This seemed to be conceived as publicity. Had the spectre of Gurdjieff's authority inhibited some of his star pupils? Brook's,'Meetings' is at best, an awkward translation of the book when compared to his take on Golding's,'Lord of the Flies'. And it lacks utterly the majesty or enigma of his stage work. The aforementioned sacred dance and the,'Contest of the Ashokhs' at the opening are the only,'Remarkable' stanzas. The best thing in it, contrarily, is Laurence Rosenthal's score. Whatever, Jarrett seems restrained in working someone else's script. When you think of,'Facing You', or the concerts at Bremen or Koln, you feel The Big Current was commanding Keith. I'm unsure if De Hartmann's own playing has been remastered to CD. His inspirational playing is on record and worth tracing. Alain Krenski has been a valuable and prolific recorder of the De Hartmann/Gurdjieff canon. I'd prioritise, however Elan Sicroff's singular,'Journey To Inaccessible Places' if you are truly interested in premium quality interpretation. Sicroff's touch makes each note an event. If you are lucky enough to live in Massachusetts, you may even get to hear him perform!

Checked this one out a bunch of times and in different moods. Really wanted to give it a chance after hearing some good things about it, but found it to be extremly dull and uninteresting each time. Oh well. Am still a Jarrett fan.

I don't know exactly how many pianists there are in the world - probably several million? Of these, only a tiny number could have pulled this recording off, and none better than Keith Jarrett, one of the finest pianists we have working in any genre or idiom. This isn't jazz at all, but rather piano transcriptions of one man's memories of central Asian Christian music. The transcriptions are not artful, but this doesn't stop them from shining like uncut gems. If you can connect with these minor melodies, then you'll find this recording exceptionally beautiful, as I do.

Not that I'm trying to ruin the great idea of SACRED HYMNS. I just think Gurdjieff is as good in composing music as Freud or Nietzsche... Jarrett's playing is impeccable as always but music is rather boring. My modest opinion-3 stars

5 out of 5 stars The Mills Brothers make these hymns sparkle.......2001-02-23

This CD contians ten hymns by The Mills Brothers, all of them absolutely wonderful. However, I would like to single out two of the tracks as being the best versions of the respective songs that I have ever heard. "The Old Rugged Cross" is both aristically brilliant and spiritually inspiring. The arrangement is perfect for the song and the style of The Mills Brothers. The same goes for their amazing version of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee", which is not done in the typical overpaced style that the song is usually performed in, but is slowed down so that the power of the lyric comes through perfectly. These two and the other eight songs make for a terrifically inspiring time of worship.

This is an excellent recording of popular hymns expertly arranged as big band charts. Chris McDonald did a superb job with the arrangements, ensuring that the entire CD has plenty of variety so as to not sound repetitive. Some of his arrangements are just pure genius - very interesting twists on the old standards. The musicians are all excellent players, the recording quality is great, and the solos are very appropriate for the songs (the improvisation is not particularly "note-y" but rather is melodic, while definitely sounding like it is coming from an accomplished player).

Again, I want to emphasize the variety on this CD - you definitely won't hear each song done the same way over and over. McDonald does a great job of passing the melody and background among the four sections of the band.

I am in a church big band that plays several of these charts (though not nearly as well), and they are all really great tunes. While it is not ground-breaking music, and serious big-band listeners aren't likely to say "wow", it is definitely an enjoyable CD for even serious jazzers.

I have a slightly different version of this CD - it contains ten songs rather than twelve. My CD contains "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Were You There", and I hate to see those not on this CD. This version contains four vocal charts - "He Keeps Me Singing", "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho", "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", and "Let Us Break Bread Together" that are not on my version. I have not heard these vocal charts, but my band has played all four, and they are all great.

I also recommend the two Chris McDonald Christmas CDs. I don't see them on amazon.com as I write this, but they are both excellent CDs that are very similar to this.

If you like big band and gospel music, this is a treat!! It is not some shabbily recorded CD. The musicians are first rate and so is the recording/production. You won't be dissappointed.

All in one CD one will hear soulful Christian hymns and an inspired musical performance on par with any big band recording available today. This CD is full of dynamic and hard-swinging brass, sweet and etheral ballads and victorious vocals. I am aware of only a few such Christian big band recordings and am very pleased with my purchase. It does its part in honoring God and His gift of beautiful music. Don't be shy, this CD deserves to be played frequently on the best equipment available. Enjoy and may God richly bless you!

This CD is a great compliment to the original volume. All intrumental makes for very easy listening. The choice of song titles is very good as you will recognize most. I highly recommend this CD for anyone interested in good old mountain music.

This CD is a tremendous addition to Volumns 1 and 2. The musical arrangements of familiar songs is wonderful. The sounds of the handmade instruments are truly pleasing to the ear. This CD would be highly recommended as soothing, relaxing background music as well as good ol' foot stomping music. The fact that the entire album is instrumental is a definite plus. I highly recommend the purchase if this album.
