I never thought I would get this release on CD and my vinyl copy was wearing out! Neil is on great form on
this album joined by many Jazz Fusion greats such as Michael Brecker, Steve Gadd, Abraham Laboriel, Paulinho Da Costa and of course Buzz Feiten providing great guitar support throughout.This was a time when Jazz Fusion
had an edge to it with Demonette being played at many clubs when it was released.
Get in your car and head to the coast playing the title track as loud as possible!

Close to the flame.......2003-10-25

Not even close to excellence of Jungle Fever in terms of vibrancy and raw excitement found on that previous record but alas the last great moment of the feiten/larsen collaboration before MOR vocals ruin the mix. The big problem here is the overall sound of the mix, no immediacy, sort of a down the hall recording. Was Steve Gadd just our of rehab for these sessions? None of the sparkle of his earlier 70's sessions are found here. Regardless, if you love Buzz's solos, you need to buy this.

Fantastic Fusion.......2002-11-17

Keyboards, electric guitar and edgy rock jazz riffs characterize this stylish fusion effort. The melodies are not complex, but the playing is great and the purity of this blend of rock and jazz is reminds you of why fusion at this stage was so captivating. Before the genre drifted into the banalities of "smooth", albums like this explored a the fresh new possibilities of two important genres.

High Gear was the culmination of original metal guitar work when metal bands in all genres were degenerating into generic riffs.

The vocals were excellent. My only criticism was the mix...the bass-player was mixed out too much (sound engineer probably ran it through a compressor for cheap stereos).

To top off the excellent music, the message was unique among the Christian bands.

I saw them live when they did this tour...let me tell you, they rivaled any band I've seen: Petra, Ozzie, White Zombie, Type-O-Negative, etc...Christian and non-Christian, Whitecross was king.

Perputual blistering guitar at it's finest.......2004-07-30

This album is one of my favourites of all time. Every guitar solo on this album is mind blowing and I havn't heard an album with so much energy from a literally unknown guitar player (at the time) since. The riffs are good, the songs are good and if you are into early Van Halen mixed with a bit more speed and technical play, you will enjoy this.

This album is awesome! A genuine hidden treasure for hard rock fans. It will make your mind, just get a copy and you'll believe.

What should've been.......2004-03-11

In the UK, the market for virtuoso guitar oriented rock is pretty specialist and so it's only by chance that I got hold of a used copy of 'High gear' through Amazon, 13 years after its release. Until now my knowledge of top class shredders was limited to better known acts that made the cross over to the UK. I'd never heard of Greg Howe until a couple of weeks ago. This is a top quality 'party' rock album in the vein of Van Halen DLR period. Unlike dark and dreary grunge and nu-metal, it has loads of energy and the solos are top flight shreddings, but without being the sort of self-indulgent widdling you find on albums of the neo-classical instrumental variety. Although Al Howe's vocals are more than a tad reminscent of DLR, they work. The bassist and drummer are no slouches either. Why this album never crossed into the US mainstream is a mystery to me.

Mind blowing guitar solos........2004-01-03

I find it strange that this album hasn't been reviewed to date. The guitar solos in the album are breath taking and the music is prity dam heavy. Recorded with Greg's brother on vocals this is fast throughout and also has a guest appearance by Jason Becker of all people. They released a second album after this called 'now hear this' but it was no way as good as this album. Shame though they never kept the flow. 5 stars definately even just for the guitar solo on the opening track!
