Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.

A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17

I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22

Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12

The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

Perfect.......2004-08-13

This entire series of discs is really great...centered around a theme ("Book Lovers," "Lazy Afternoons," "When You're Alone,")each CD is full of beautifully done instrumentals that, interestingly enough, really do catch the spirit of the title. I particularly like this one--"for Book Lovers"--and read with it playing in the background. Could you find "better" performances or recordings of the selections? Sure. But for the convenience, quality, seclections and price, why should you? These are a terrific value, and a great way to start a classical music collection. Enjoy.

Uplifting.......2002-01-28

The great advantage of using Amazon.com is one has an opportunity to listen to a sample of a CD prior to purchasing it. I did this with PRIME MERIDIAN. This opportunity caused me to purchase it.

I love the stylishness of the tracks on this CD. For me, the music has a calming effect. When I know that I am going to have a bad day at the office, I’ll listen to this CD while driving to work. When I arrive, I don’t feel so bad.

Mr. Rick Sims and the didjits tear apart rock n' roll's expectations on Full Nelson Reilly. Blues, Rock n' Roll and punk make a lethal combination, as the didjits prove here. The successor to "Hornet Pinata", they opt for a somewhat slower, sludgier sound, due maybe in part to engineer Steve Albini, to equal success. The full on intensity of "Who Wants to Get High?" and "Eat the Roach" owe as much to The Stooges and MC5, as they do to their current contemporaries. A cover of Devo's "Mr. Dna" only proves how truly bizarre and chaotic the didjits truly are, in their inimitable, twisted sense of genius.

Exceptional Vibes Led Trio Which Is Also A Broader.......2006-02-28

appearance for Steve Nelson who had his major mainstream exposure with David "Fathead" Newman. Some compare Steve's sound to Bobby Hutcherson but in my opinion , it's closer to Milt Jackson's, especially in this set of six standards and two originals which are mostly in the ballad vein providing a warm sound with no sharp edges.

This is a real laid back effort, witout drums, but the pulse is carried very well by bassist Ray Drummond with Kirk Lightsey darting in and out in support. Close to half of the set is extended enough to allow these three to stretch out with exquisite musicianship....... fabulous chops while sounding crisp and assured.

This will appeal to anyone who enjoys fine vibes, piano, bass, good trios, a mellow but exceptionally good set in any or all of the combinations mentioned!

The only criticism is that the label identified "Star Crossed Lovers" as being written by Neil Sedaka instead of Duke Ellington. Also "Chelsea Bridge" is a Billy Strayhorn composition, not Ellington as stated......come on "Production" people!!!

Like The Vibe!.......2001-11-02

What a nice offering by Steve Nelson Trio, it sets a good mood. Six covers and two originals, wonderful work by Steve Nelson (Vibes) Kirk Lightsey (piano) & Ray Drummond (bass). Some songs go a bit long and some solos don't pay off but a first class effort all the way. My favorite is the Neil Sedaka cover of "Star Crossed Lovers" great continuity throughout. If you are a fan of old MJQ, I think that you will like "Full Nelson".

The boy has a great voice........2002-06-13

This CD is a great debut album. His voice and style are a perfect blend, and the tone of the album is exactly what you want to listen to if you're sitting on the porch with a beer in hand, looking out at the stars. "Delivered" is an especially beautiful tune, and the message goes straight to the heart. There is some definite Springsteen-like genius here.
