With his forays into Brazilian music, hip-hop, and Bach, musical boundaries have no meaning for the Philadelphia-born pianist Uri Caine. On this CD, Caine takes on composer Gustav Mahler. Caine, along with his jazz companions, clarinetist Don Byron and trumpeter Ralph Alessi, expand and elaborate on 14 of Mahler's lieders. With his spry allusions to Herbie Hancock and Glenn Gould, Caine manages to "keep it real" in the classical tradition, and introduce jazz and world themes into these compositions. Augmented by an eclectic array of singers, actors, and poets, Caine and company manage to pull of a musical mutiny of pleasing proportions with the inclusion of opera, Hebraic, and Germanic concert music. The title track is a mournful elegy to the atrocities of Columbine and the Holocaust while "Labor Lost" riffs on Freudian psychoanalysis. "The Lonely One in Autumn" and "On Youth," adapted from Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde," breathe with an Asian atmosphere, thanks to the Silk Road sonorities of the Chinese erhu, dizi, and pipa instruments. Mahler remarked that, "I am thrice homeless. As a Bohemian born in Austria. As an Austrian among Germans. And as a Jew throughout the world." Uri Caine's expansive art is a welcome home for Mahler's restless and rootless genius. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Why is this out of print?.......2007-04-22
This is an excellent collection and it is a shame that this is out of print here in the US. no fear though, it is still in print in the UK, and simply point yourself to amazon.co.uk or Silva Screen's own website listed in the other review, and pick this up.
What is included here you may wonder? This included most of the tracks from Silva's 1993 collection of Max Steiner themes and suites recorded with the Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra. The Helen of Troy suite was not included because the producer was not happy with that suite. Likewise, a Summer Place has been replaced with new recordings by the Prague Philharmonic.
A number of the other tracks originate from Silva's second collection of Max Steiner themes and suites, released in 1997, only in the UK.
Adventures of Don Juan is from 1997's Swashbucklers of the Silver Screen, while King Kong is from 1998's Monster Movie Music Album.
The Searchers suite goes back to 1994 on Silva's excellent "Music from the Films of John Wayne" compilation.
The only new tracks here were the replacement tracks for A Summer Place, as well as The Charge of the Light Brigade
Silva has since recorded updated suites of Gone With the Wind and Casablanca, released in 2005 on The Incredible Film Music Box, but the suites included here from Kenneth Alwyn and the Westminster Philharmonic are more than adequate.
Magnificent!.......2006-06-07
This is simply a wonderful album. It is also an HDCD. It's wonderful to hear these pieces from long-gone but fondly remembered movies from my childhood. Luckily, some are reappearing on dvd. A definite 5 star album to treasure. Now, please note that the photo of the album is correct. However, the ones "available" from CDNOW Preferred Buyer's Club are NOT the correct album. I ordered it twice from them, and both times I got a single disc of a few excerpts from GWTW only. When I spoke with CDNOW, the rep told me he would notify amazon and have the listing changed, but they have not done so. The guy I spoke with at CDNOW recommended I try eBay, which I did, and I found a copy in England.

"The Godfather of film scoring of historic proportions".......2001-10-10
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, one composer stands above the rest ~ Max Steiner...you gave the usher your ticket in the theatre and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth, if the composer was Steiner...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes, you sat back and watched as the master, with baton worked his magic.
All twenty-six selections give you the feeling you've been there...but, the stand outs in my mind are ~ "KING KONG"..."ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN"..."THE FLAME AND THE ARROW"..."NOW VOYAGER"..."THE TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE"..."CASABLANCA"..."THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE"..."THE SEARCHERS"..."A SUMMER PLACE"...and a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND", sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score.
Silva America as usual, has put quality into this 2-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
One note, on Disc Two for "SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN", the opening introduction used by Steiner is, "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, for Mr. Steiner was a patriot and loved this country so, during these trying times today, this seems to be the realizations of all Americans, more than ever!
Total Time: Disc One 60:17 on 13 Tracks &
Disc Two 60:01 on 13 Tracks

I'VE HEARD OF NICHE MARKETS...........2005-01-28
...And we all have a niche (were made for our niches) but...
Why is it that when one discusses Uri Caine, one only gets to the actual music as the last thing, if you ever get to discussing the music at all?
For those of you who don't know Uri (a jazzman and an avant-garde guy--if ever there was one--at play in the fields of giants like Mahler--here and in Primal Light--as well as Bach--I can't recommend his Goldbergs enough) this is who he is. When you get to know his stuff, you'll see the irony in that statement.
To get to the music--
Do not pull out. Do not dissect. If you're gonna give Uri Caine his due (I think you should at least give his works a once over), then you need to hear this stuff as a whole work; just like you'd treat with Mahler's stuff. Stepping into Two Blue Eyes or Song of the Prisoner in the Tower without perspective will make you run the other way.
However, taken as a whole, I find myself absorbed into the sound worlds Uri creates in Dark Flame. It's a little like coming down off the mountain when you're done.
This music makes me feel strangely closer to Mahler as well.
I can't think of a better recommendation for this work than that.
Dark Flame won't be everybody's cup of tea. But this is no novelty. It is a singular brew worth trying at least once.
Very difficult.......2005-01-03
I got this one because I'm familiar with Uri's playing with Dave Douglas. I figured it might be a strange album, but I underestimated how strange it was for me. This album doesn't have much jazz in it. The title track, "Shining Trumpets", and "St. Anthony" are the jazziest ones, and my favorites. Many of the other songs have voiceovers, most commonly a German voice which sounds like it was taken from "Cabaret". There's also some spoken English and Chinese. Since I'm unfamiliar with the context, and German and Chinese languages, the spoken pieces don't grab me.
I just found it difficult to listen to, and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me as a whole. This album may be a five-star album for someone else.
Two great tastes that go great together! Caine and Mahler.......2004-06-24
Stark, Lush, Beautiful, Horrid, Moving and startling. Uri and Gustav do again and again. The arrangements and the absolute music are of the highest level. If you've not heard these works, do it now!

Stravinsky-->Zappa-->Zorn-->Liebig.......2004-10-08
Steuart Liebig's
Pomegranate fuses the quirky chamber ensemble rhetoric of Stravinsky's "L'Histoire du Soldat," Schoenbergian serialism, and an improvised music bent that is totally contemporary. The former two qualities connect this suite of four pieces with modern classical music, and certainly the concerto format is most often associated with through-composed art music. But look at the solo instruments that Liebig writes for: french horn? contrabass? sopranino saxophone?
ELECTRIC GUITAR?!?! Just looking at the instrumentation, it is clear that this music looks ahead even as it is tied to classical traditions.
Complicating the pigeonholer's job further is a rotating cast of musical styles and methods within each piece. Liebig purposefully juxtaposes structure and freedom, a concept long associated with jazz and improvised music but still jarring when heard in a more classical setting. "Flare up like flame and create dark shadows" begins with Vinny Golia's solo sopranino saxophone cadenza, moves into a cacophonous cycle of thematic statements, then launches into a free jazz section with a walking bass ostinato and Alex Cline's swinging drums. The piece alternates among Webern-style atonal composition, Albert Ayler squalls and hard bop dozens of times in the space of each lengthy piece. Liebig's compositional sense recalls that of John Zorn's chamber works, but where Zorn's abrupt stylistic leaps are intentionally lacking in fluidity, each of the elements in
Pomegranate's concertos seem to hang together.
This project certainly stands out in both Liebig's ouevre and the Cryptogramophone catalog. That it is so satisfying is testament to the expert musicianship displayed every step of the way, and also to Steuart Liebig's imaginative writing and leadership.
