Hall & Oates' second and last Arista album.......2005-04-22

Daryl Hall and John Oates were dropped from RCA after 1984 and found a new home at Arista in early 1988. Their first Arista album,OOH YEAH,released that same year,was neither a flop nor a major hit. This is the duo's first album since the vinyl record phaseout began in 1989. There were LP copies of this album available in limited areas and quantities when it was released in the fall of 1990. Hits from this album include SO CLOSE,DON'T HOLD BACK YOUR LOVE and STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN which was first a hit for another R&B artist in 1973. After this album,the duo went on a studio break for seven years.

Good little nuggets here.......2004-07-10

While "So Close" and "Don't Hold Back Your Love" are definite keepers on this album, there are a couple more that make it very worthwhile. Notably, "Starting All Over Again" is a catchy remake worth hitting the repeat button for, as is the jazzy "Halfway There," guaranteed to make you dance and sing along. "Starting All Over" is cool because it showcases John Oates' voice as well as Daryl Hall, who dominates on stage during their concerts.

By the way, their "Rock and Soul Revue" with Michael McDonald and the Average White Band is a fantastic show, a must-see. The boys and their band kick some ass on many of your favorite songs, and if you stomp hard enough, they'll return for an encore of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and another song.

Slight Sales, But Worthwhile.......2004-01-17

Hall and Oates came upon a good trend - strip down the songs and use acoustic instruments if possible. Unfortunately, after recording the album I assume someone at Arista got panicky; there seems to be no other explanation for the second, louder version of "So Close," produced by studio vet Danny Kortchmar and then-hitmeister Jon Bon Jovi, that became the album's big hit. Oddly, Bon Jovi's contribution appears to be limited to the booth (he's not listed as a player in the album's massive credit list, although he and Kortchmar are given partial songwriting credits). Kortchmar contributes guitar with longtime buddy Waddy Wachtel; he's rewarded by having his name misspelled in the production credits.

Anyway, don't go just on the basis of that one song. It does appear H&O were a little dry on ideas - "Starting All Over Again" is a remake of an old Mel & Tim song, "Give It Up (Old Habits)" only credits Hall with additional lyrics, and "Heavy Rain" and "Don't Hold Back Your Love" are written (and produced) by David A. Stewart and Richard Tyson, respectively. But the album is more cohesive than anything they had done since "Voices" (unless you want to count the consistently misogynistic "H2O"). The themes are simplicity (title track), getting back to basics ("Sometimes a Mind Changes") and working to keep what's good in your life around ("Give It Up").

Hall is in good voice throughout, and manages to restrain himself from overdubbing furiously. Oates is, as usual, underused - he's down to one solo spot ("Only Love") and a couple of cowrites. Guests include Heartbreaker Benmont Tench, Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit on backing vocals, and a couple of dozen others - the "band" from "Private Eyes" had ceased to exist by that point.

Start with the last track first (the unplugged version of "So Close," which far outshines the hit version), then program the other songs randomly. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

not that great of an album for H&O fans.......2003-09-03

I went out and bought this album since I'm a big fan of Hall and Oates. This wasn't the greatest H&O album, but at least they put in some effort. Daryl's voice at times does sound raspy or at times he's gasping for breath. I simply liked the album because it had some great songs such as "So Close" and "Don't Hold Back Your Love", but the rest of the album--BO-RING!

the beginning of the comeback.......2001-11-28

finally, Daryl and John made their way back to their sound from the urban\electronic sound trip they were on. it think it paved the way to the great "Marigold Sky" (the CD that came after this one). if you love Hall & Oates, or just love good music, you won't be disappointed. this CD may be a little too underrated. it has some really beautiful songs. listen to "So Close", "Change Of Season" or "Heavy Rain" and, again, you won't be disappointed, and that's just to start with. take it home, turn the lights off, and put it on.

The Hollywood Star Orchestra played the music from the film in this soundtrack, and I think it makes great background music when you are reading (the newest Harry Potter book!) or relaxing around the house...the music is soothing and nice!

This is like the Cliff NOtes of the original soundtrack. It does not sound synthesized even if it is. THe music is fine to listen to. I'm hosting a Harry Potter Themed party and this will do perfectly.

Okay, I should've paid closer attention while placing my order...this is just to try to keep someone else from repeating my mistake. I wanted an audio version of the book, and what I got was music from the movie. NOT what I wanted, although I can hardly complain to the seller at the price I paid ($2 plus shipping for a factory sealed cd). I haven't opened the cd to listen to it, so the music may be perfectly wonderful. If I could've given this a neutral rather than negative connotation with regard to quality or how much I liked it, I would've. Still, I won't have my book in time for my trip. :-(

Terrible synthesized recording.......2003-05-21

I ordered this CD thinking it was the same one I had borrowed from my local library: highlights from Harry Potter played by the Hollywood Orchestra. Sadly, it was not. The pieces, played by a synthesized orchestra, have a new-age sound to them. Everyone in my family hates it.

Interesting, first rate mix of styles and soloists..........2006-08-30

Tim Garland certainly has been a find. A solid soloist with a big bodied tone reminiscent of Michael Brecker and Stanley Turrentine on tenor. A rich tone on soprano and bass clarinet. He's an inventive soloists with a good economy with notes, free of tangents. He's soulful and inventive throughout this recording. He's never clinical or emotionally detached from the piece. Be assured there is no schmaltz or sappiness involved here.

He's assembled a first rate group here. Paul Bollenback on guitar, John Patitucci on bass and Gary Novak on drums.

Mr. Bollenback is as vital to this recording as Mr. Garland. He brings so much to each piece, with a keen feel for everything endeavored here. He is listening all the time as it shows in the types of solos he takes. Bollenback is a talent deserving much, much wider recognition. Every bit as inventive as his prodigious contemporaries, he has a marvelous feel for jazz, fusion, fission, blues and rock. He accompanies extremely well.

John Patitucci is.. well John Patitucci. Essential as always. It's easy to take him for granted since he so lends himself to every situation. A versatile bassist who plays both electric and acoustic with equal ability. I think he an essential modern acoustic player who really makes that bass sing!

Gary Novak is an underrated drummer. He can match any of the fusion drummers stroke for stroke, beat for beat but opts to be a sensitive, inventive and propulsive drummer. He gives each piece what it needs while establishing himself as a vital presence. Excellent cymbal work.

It's hard to find a weak song on this recording. I can only name my favorites and why.

I originaly bought this recording on the strength of "Tunji". An dark exotically beautiful, blues inflected piece which is non the level of Herbie Hancock's stunning "Butterfly". Garland on bass clarinet conveys a rich tone and solos excellently. Bollenback is a particular joy on this with a blues inflected, fluid solo. This piece has a real vibe about it.

Crawler is another high point with Novak, Bollenbeck and Garland shining in their respective solos.

Piece In Our Time is another one of those pieces expansive pieces that allows ample room for dynamics and nuance.

The Food of Love has Tim waxing very soulfully on a ballad on tenor.

Inner Space is one of the really swinging, driven pieces where first rate soloists such as these really show you their very best as is evidenced here.

Change of Season is a beautiful piece that is remiscent of Pat Metheny's best melodies. There is excellent interplay and soloing here.

Electrocity is a pedal to the medal romp. It is OUTSTANDING. Garland on tenor plays as well as anyone on this without ever running with himself. Bollenback takes another gutsy, inventive solo. Novak cooks on this. Patitucci is particularly inventive on acoustic bass.

First Rain is stunning in it's beauty. This one is memorable with a bit of an eastern flavor. It's downright organic since it just breathes. It's difficult to forget this piece. I found myself hitting the repeat button because this too has a vibe that conveys alot.

Overall this is one of the best recording of it's kind I've heard in a while.

I applaud Tim Garland and company. Thank you for this one. A recording with strong compositions, excellent soloing, symbiosis and interplay. A recording with few if any excesses.

More good stuff from Origina & Bill Bruford sax-man.......2005-01-12

Tim Garland continues his recent creative roll on this quartet outing. During the last few years, Garland has ably branched into small-group chamber jazz (Storms/Nocturnes), big band arrangements (Dean Streat Underground), and alternate time signatures (Bill Bruford's Earthworks). This energetic outing breaks explores a quartet with guitar, which changes the sound significantly. John Patitucci and Gary Novak provide great communication from the rhythm section, and these songs groove and swing where needed. Paul Bollenback's guitar is a nice surprise as he's a player I had not heard before. Garland has a number of strong and memorable melodies in the songs proving that he is coming into his own as a writer as well.

GET THE ORIGINAL HARRY POTTER SCORE!!!! ~NOT THIS!!!!~.......2003-07-02

I have had "The Sorcerer's Stone" and "The Chamber of Secrets" original soundtracks for a very long while. And when I was at the store one day I spotted this soundtrack... it looked different from the others I had, and I (being a huge Harry Potter fan) decided to get these CD's. Okay... BIG MISTAKE! I'm sorry, but this revision of the wonderful Harry Potter music from the original soundtracks is just horrible! It sounds like the whole CD was played on a keyboard and not with real orchestral instruments. And the songs seem to repeat themselves over and over again just to make the whole CD last longer.

Peice of advice: Get the original soundtracks and not this!

This is a dreadful ripoff of the Harry Potter Philosopher's Stone soundtrack == I got it as a package with the sound track of Chamber of Secrets. It didn't occur to me that it would be a fifth rate non musical attempt to fly on someone else's broomstick DON'T GET IT

Others may not have enjoyed it, but I sure did! Williams captures the essence of the magic of a place like Hogwarts very well. I particularly liked the effect used in song number five with the flutes. Very entertaining!

I am a fond lover of soundtracks and even more so of John Williams. I think the soundtrack from Harry Potter was pretty good, but lacked a certain quality that you see in Wiliams work such as Jurassic Park. It was exciting and original in it's own right, but it still needed a certain quality that never came through for the most part. It's definitly worth a try to listen to it, don't get me wrong I think it's a wonderful soundtrack, but it lacks a certain something that I can't name. That was why I gave it three stars instead of a higher rating
