The Man can Play.......2004-04-15
Say him at Blues Alley playing with Marcus Johnson and the whole time we were wondering who was this guy on the bass. He reminded me of Stanley Clark. Bottom line is that hey is unbelievable and it shows on the CD. Highly recommended.
Keeping it in the Pocket!.......2004-03-08
The tone , approach, and rythms he displays in his music on this cd, makes me feel like I've known him all of my life. I'm a bass player and I love to pluck and thump. He feeds every area of my musical imagination with each song as they rumble through my system. Even the slow tracks are so sharp that I don't skip over any of them to listen to the next track. If your a serious bass player, then you must experience the true meaning of being one with your instrument...Daid Dyson's Soulmates is the first step towards that experience!
Bad (meaning good) stuff!.......2002-07-18
Unfortunately, I only recently learned about Mr. Dyson's solo recording career. When I visited Marimelj Entertainment Group's website to check out the latest happening's, I clicked on David's biosketch and realized he was the bass player I had experienced at two concerts of Me'shelle Ndegeocello in the last year. My impression after each of those concerts was "that guy on the bass was fierce." Once I realized David was the guy I had heard with Me'shelle, I knew I had to get the cd. And I was not disappointed. David displays some serious bass playing and melody making skills. I'm sure that as he matures, his skills and repertoire will become as reknown as two of my favorite bassists, Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke. However, this cd deserves experiencing on its own merits. I so look forward to new recordings from this artist.
Awesome CD.......2002-04-03
Soulful bass playing all the way through! Some songs are so funky you can't help but bob your head. Others are just mellow enough to lounge a read a good novel to. Worth buying - you'll play it all the time! Check out Lena's Lullabye.
Great.......2001-07-01
Inspired and inspiring music from this young man. He might be one of today's most promising bass players. He's heartful. Great man. People who like Marcus Miller or Stanley Clarke will like David Dyson.

Soulmates is a wondrous beat orchestra culled from the oddest of sources. Los Angeles' Nobody sidesteps the funk/soul paradigm of today's hip-hop productions, outfitting his solo debut instead with otherworldly jazz bits, space rock, and lifted guitar psychedelica. Nobody's music, like DJ Shadow's, is heavily layered and rooted in the obscure. As a folksy, sleepy alternative to Shadow's Endtroducing, Soulmates collects and assembles diverse sounds that seem like they were born to be together. The amazing "Green Means" builds steadily from a hypnotic acoustic guitar arpeggio into a heavy storm of crashing cymbals and backwards loops; teetering drums and shrill feedback accompany Freestyle Fellowship on the underground hit "Planets Ain't Aligned." Even though Angeleno hip-hop legends Fellowship, Medusa, and Abstract Rude show up to lend rhymes, their appearances almost distract from Nobody's slavishly intricate, hypnotic productions. --Hua Hsu
Customer Reviews:
Soulful "Soulmates".......2005-02-04
Elvin Estela, also whimsically known as "Nobody," knows his hip-hop. And his trip-hop. And he knows how to blend them together exquisitely in "Soulmates," his polished debut. It leans a bit too much on the jagged raps, but retains a sort of sleepy eeriness from beginning to end.
At the start, "Soulmates" sounds like a mixture of airy space-rock, bits of acid jazz, and some of the airiest little melodies you could imagine. Nobody's trippy, sleepy songs are delicate and dreamlike, with things like a soprano choir and guitar strums overlaid with blipping samples and tinkling bells. He even dips into experimental numbers with "Nozirah," a completely distorted one-minute song.
But there's another side to "Soulmates," one lined with acid jazz and spacey hip-hop. Songs like "Syde Trips" have jazzy drums and bluesy sounds, despite all the haunted-house sound effects. And other songs are, simply put, acid rap -- 2 Mex and Medusa are among the rappers that show up, against Nobody's swirling music.
The hip-hop angle is also the album's sole weakness. Nobody's work is so exquisite, it's distracting to have these guys rapping over it. On the second or third listen, however, their voices start to blend into the psychedelic trip. Freestyle Fellowship is the worst -- that song sounds like it belongs on an entirely different album.
To call "Soulmates" a hip-hop album is to underestimate it -- there is hip-hop in it, but also chillout electronica and jazz. (Hip-trip-hop-jazz?) It simply wouldn't work if it were just jazz, just electronica or just hip-hop. As a result, Nobody's versatility and complexity is an essential part of the music -- it always seems to be slowly building up to something, even if it never gets there.
Nobody uses a lot of samples and synth, giving the music a spacey feel. But underneath all this are piano and drums, acoustic guitar and what sounds like a sitar. All of this is twisted, distorted and given more echoes than a parrot. Is it good? Oh yeah.
The lyrics aren't too different -- they're a mixture of the grounded and the bizarre. The guest vocalists rap about space cadets, current politics, Mars, stargazing, rituals and "cyber-psychics brought here to fix your energy crisis." Whatever that means -- the fun is in listening, not comprehending.
"Soulmates" would be the perfect blend of hip-hop, trip-hop and jazz if it relief less on the rapping. But as it is, it's an exquisite piece of musical work.
Amazing Down-tempo work.......2003-02-16
This album is so magnificently organic. It's just so subtle and beautiful and built as a whole album of moods. The samples are unidentifiable. The echoes, the beats, the thickness of it all just sucks you in until you fall in love with it.
...fans of downtempo hiphop beats will like this..........2002-03-16
...the initial reaction is question what vice you was on that influenced you to buy this...
but give it a chance, folk...naw, this aint what has passed for hip-hop for the last ten years or so, but i think at it's core it is hip-hop still...you jus gotta remember back to the days of afrika bambaataa, planet patrol anem...no hardcore, drop to the floor and do a backspin music here, but it has its moments...
this took a couple of days to grow on me and now that it has i'm hooked...(the rappin on this is mediocre, but) imagine a cross between the hieroglyphs' "93 til infinity" and tosca's "suzuki"...
Underground hip-hop? very subtle and awesome!.......2001-09-12
He absolutely dipslays true lyrical talent amongst other talents in this album, slower and some faster style stream of thought lyrics are displayed nicely over inventive beats.
This is a great album to own, brings you through some moods that are hard to reconized in most music, But he touches that part of your creative mind and throbs it with such talent and dignity that you will not be dissapointed!
It is hip hop, regardless of some of the previous reviews. Very Tastefully done.
one of the best releases of the year.......2000-12-04
come one, come all. come and listen to the new genius of lo fi atmospheric beatmaking. this album is a true gem. there are so much more to his tracks than your regular old everyday hip hop. a collage of different time signatures, different sounds, and different personalities are just some of the things to expect. ubiquity did release another quality product and it's an amazing find. if you want something that creates a beautifully engineered journey through an album, buy this. if you refrain from using your imagination, go somewhere else.

HouseMates.......2006-06-30
Ben & Joe were housemates for a spell; hence this session isn't such a mystery. Thad Jones, in at the last minute, doesn't play a lot, but adds much when he does, and even gets a song of his own in. Some fine playing, although the strange reverb on Ben's horn takes some getting used to after hearing other albums - the sax sounds somehow distant. Not my favorite for listening straight through, but with enough merit to warrant checking out. Not your Weather Report nor Cannonball-style Zawinul, but some nice "lost in the archives" playing, especially when Thad sits in.
Soulmates.......2005-11-22
Joe Zawinul, at the time this album was recorded, was the pianist with Cannonball Adderley's group. He was a modern stylist with an affinity for Third Stream music; he would later be a key member of the fusion group Weather Report. That he would record with Ben Webster is somewhat a mystery, but for the most part, the pairing works well.
It's a well-balanced program that the group plays (Richard Davis [b] and Philly Joe Jones [d] round out the quartet, with, another surprise, Thad Jones added on cornet on half the numbers; Sam Jones [b] repalces Davis on Thad's numbers). There are a couple of slow ballad features for Ben's mournful tenor (TOO LATE NOW and COME SUNDAY), and another medium-slow version of TRAV'LIN LIGHT where Ben plays about as sexy as I've ever heard him play. Webster's own THE GOVERNOR is taken up, and Ben puts on his gruff bear suit for this one. Zawinul has a nice solo on EVOL DEKLAW NI (read it backwards), and his composition FROG LEGS has a clever boppish theme.
Thad doesn't get much of a chance to do anything, and you wonder if maybe he was in the right place at the right time and got invited into the proceedings. This album didn't set the world on fire, but it's a respectable addition to both Ben and Joe's discography. Three of the tunes had alternates made available in the LP days, and it's a surprise they weren't put on here. Oh well.

SOULMATES=COOKIN'.......2006-03-26
This is one of the swingingest albums to come down the pike in a long, long time. I guess with a front line of Randy Sandke (tp) Harry Allen (ts) and Howard Alden (g), one would expect as much. More than half of the tunes are taken at a very brisk tempo, the best being LADY BE GOOD (great Allen-Alden unison chorus near the end), THE CLAW (terrific Flip Phillips tune that features Allen and Alden), JUBILEE, and TICKLE TOE (excellent Sandke and Allen). Terrie Richards sings on four tracks in a beguiling, smoky voice; two of her vocals (THEM THERE EYES and WHAT A LITTLE MOONLIGHT CAN DO) reminded me very much of Carmen McRae's versions on her SINGS BILLIE HOLIDAY album. Everyone certainly came to play the evening this was recorded live at the Amerika Haus in Hamburg, Germany. Definitely worth having.
WARNING: For some reason, Nagel Hayer has reissued this CD under a different title (COOKIN') with a different cover and catalog number. Be careful you don't get both by mistake.
