Unbelievable........2007-06-27
First things first, don't listen to the people that have given this album a bad review. ABR has matured so much from thrill seeker.
The music is so much tighter; the new singer, Jake Luhrs, is amazing. His range is good and uses a few different screams, all in good taste.
The breakdowns are way more brutal than any of the ones on thrill seeker; they have a different feel that's more technical. The lyrics are well written and composed by the entire band opposed to just Josh McManness writing them all as they were on T.S.
The song by song review written by "Josh Cunningham" on 6/21 is very accurate so I will spare the repetition. However, I would personally rate track 8 "The Balance" a 10/10. The breakdown at the end is sick.
So if you liked Thrill Seeker, but you're looking for something more, pick up Messengers. It will blow your mind, these guys are extremely talented and have come a long way.
abr's best to date.......2007-06-23
whoever says this album sold out or isn't as good as thill seeker needs a hearing check. The songs are less prog, but still heavy as hell, and full of sick breakdowns. Black sheep is amazing. thats all there is to it. the part "too late to wake, too late to wake, too late to wake!!" gives me chills on my chills. all songs are sick. great christian prog-metalcore. the best out there. ignore all the numwits who say anything negative about this album. pick it up!!!!:p
Great follow up.......2007-06-22
ABR's latest is no disappointment and reminds us metalcore is still here and making progress. In my opinion this album is more brutal than the last, and the new vocalist does prove to be more versatile. Every track sounds great, you can read some of the other reviews here for better descriptions; this is one you can listen to straight though. Not to mention, these guys are from my hometown, so it's amazing to see them getting this kind of recognition.
more than satisfying.......2007-06-22
august burns red releases their sophmore effort "messengers" and it does not dissapoint. A couple of things changed since their last release in this album:
-New Vocalist
-New Bass Player
-ABR adds more melody
Its safe to say that this album is more melodic then "thrill seeker" but it is also way more metal. don't worry, these guys don't start singing at any point, its still the same brutal ABR that you know from their previous work. they still throw breakdowns in at random places and they still appear several times in each songs. The drummer is still amazingly good and amazingly fast.
here is a run down of the album:
1. Truth of a Liar - 9/10
Great opener. Great lyrics, the guitar work is melodic and yet brutal at the same time during the pause for the solo after the ending breakdown
2. Up against the Ropes 10/10
Sick. This song is like 6 songs all rolled into one. There is a breakdown almost every 30-45 seconds. I'm not joking. Brutal song.
3. Back Burner - 9/10
Brutal, dark song. The new vocalist, Jake, growls deeply several times during the song, a different but amazing additon to the bands sound. A very cool sounding breakdown at the end.
4. The Blinding Light - 9/10
A good tight song with an awesome ending breakdown. Good guitar work. A song which proves they went more "metal" with this album than the previous one. Nice breakdown at the end.
5. Composure 10/10
Great stuff here. Sounds like "thrill seeker". Drum work is awesome, going from breakdown to fast pounding. Nice Guitar work at the end.
6. Vital Signs 9/10
The first time i heard this song, i was like "eh, okay." Then i took a closer listen and it grew on me alot. Reminds me somewhat of Unearth at some points. Guitar work is frantic along with drum work.
7. The Eleventh Hour - 10/10
Amazing song. The song starts of fast which leads to a SICK breakdown halfway through the song. This whole song is brutal, Jakes vocals, the drum work, if your downloading random songs, this is the one to preview first.
8. The Balance 9/10
A more Melodic Song. A lot of Guitar work, but still a fast brutal tight song. A good solid melodic song from these guys. 0
9. Black Sheep 10/10
An amazing passionite song. Starts of with guitar work then jumps right into a breakdown. One of the most brutal songs on the album, an ending breakdown with lyrics that give me chills. Amazing stuff. My Favorite of the album.
10. An American Dream 10/10
Sounds like "thrill seeker." Brutal song, nice and tight sounding, with breakdowns thrown in at every corner you turn. Very cool sounding guitar work about 1:45, right when Jake yells, "ohh!". Nice tight song.
11. Redemption 10/10
Not as brutal as "thrill seeker"'s finale, but still a great song. They went with the more Melodic route and its a nice touch as the song sounds extremely passionite. A great ending to a great album.
In the end, is this better then Thrill Seeker? I don't know yet, i know its much more than a satisfying release from these guys. I also know its not leaving my CD player for like 3 months. It's slighly more melodic then Thrill Seeker, but as for the claim it sounds like Killswitch Engage?
No, not in the least. I don't know what that reviewer was talking about.
This is honestly one of the most brutal albums i've heard in a while. Do yourself a favor. Go to your nearest store and pick it up. It's that good.
Do it, like, now.
No Surprises, No Disappointment.......2007-06-21
Messengers picks up right where Thrill Seeker left off with ABR's rousing and masterful metalcore. Producer Tue Madsen effectively plays to the band's natural strengths and provides an overall darker feel to the album without sacrificing the emphasis on riffing and hairpin rhythm changes. Oddly enough, they trade in for the new producer over Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam D, and yet manage to sound a good bit more like KSE than on their last release (though they boast far more technical variation and far less melodic vocal hookage than Killswitch).
Vocally and lyrically, Jake Luhrs proves to be a more than capable replacement to Josh McManness as he uses a much more brutal, direct approach in both respects as well as boasting a wider vocal range. The result is a more complete album. Highlights include "The Eleventh Hour" and "An American Dream", both of which are anything but vague in their sound and their message.
For those who are concerned because of some of ABR's contemporaries, never fear...no attempted emo or 80s rock melodies creeping their way in here. Even though closing track "Redemption", based on lyrics, could easily have been turned into a ballad, it is consistent with the feel of the album as it satisfyingly concludes the record.
No big surprises or changes here - Messengers is a solid sophomore album that will further establish the band as a force to be reckoned with in technical metal.

The musical person's metal.......2007-01-12
I am not a metalhead. I don't dress in black. I don't list GWAR as one of my favorite bands. I am a fan of good music--that is, music that is good by being complicated, different, beautiful, or otherwise adhering to longstanding rules about what good music is laid out by the critics of the likes of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and so on. The rest of this album's reviews will tell you this is a great album because it's "sweet" or "heavy" or "pumps you up" or the empty quasi-intelligent-sounding moniker "technical". I'm here to tell you that this album is good because the music is good.
All vocals and feeling through listening aside, let's look at the instrumentation. Each song is filled with guitarwork that will leave your head spinning. Instead of relying on the boring drop-D-string pounding with interspersed licks so heavily, ABR's songs are all but driven by complicated riffs the whole song through. How they can play an entire live set filled with songs like this is more than I can comprehend (but I've seen them do it).
The drumming is not the typical double-bass-drum-roll with limited snare and cymbal variety (think As I Lay Dying--which is good, but less complicated). The beats are nothing like anything else. I feel sorry for this drummer's bandmembers trying to figure out how to play with his crazy intricate beats, but I love it. Try to nod your head to any of their songs (those of you who have rythm) and notice that you'll inevitably be off-beat throughout the song because of changing time-signatures!
This album is good not because it gives me something to jump around, kick, scream, and break things to, but because the musicianship is top-of-the-line.
When you're angry, you scream, now that's awesome.......2006-12-04
This album was amazing! But, it's so stupid that they put the entire album in their official website. I really like the song "Speech Impediment", love how it began, love the drumming in this song, and lovethe vocals in this song. The members are so young, and are impressive. this is definetly heavy! "Endoephins" was really brutal, and the drumming was good too. I really love this song!! The drumming in the beginning of "Too Late For Roses" was good too. This band is soooo heavy! I just can't wait for their new album around the early 2007. My favorite songs are tracks 1-5. "Barbarian" is definetly heavy! But, most songs in this album sounded the same, but still the drumming was amazing!! Good job, boys!
THE BEST.......2006-08-17
I never write reviews and felt like I just had to for these guys... this cd is simply amazing. The vocals are perfect, the music rips and is technically interesting but not forced technical, the sound and production is killer, the arrangements are excellent, and the flow and groove are all there. There isn't much singing so if you're looking for the melodic singing - not here - but the vocals fit in perfect... I'd compare these guys to Lamb of God but they're a little different - I think they're more musically interesting but love both bands. Definitely check this out. This is a cd that you can listen to over and over and over and never get tired of. One of my favs for sure.
Clean Quality and a fresh sound.......2006-08-09
I never expected to like another christian band again after listening to Demon Hunter :\ However, these guys are one of the more technical metalcore bands out there, these guys have alot of talent and this is a CD that shouldn't be missed, and don't get put off by the fact that their christian, since it doesn't really matter as long as the music is good ;)

Your search for good Burns songs has ended.......2000-01-29
Jean Redpath sings the "inimitable songs of Burns" as if Rabbie himself is hovering over her shoulder. You're not likely to find too many singers more suited to her material than Redpath. Also, I needs must mention the first-rate musical accompaniments by Serge Hovey. All in all, the seven volume Redpath-Burns series is indispensible for lovers of song everywhere. Way to go, folks.

Elegance in sound.......2007-05-13
McKellar has one of the finest tenor voices I have heard. There is a range that is broad, while keeping a very masculine sound. I learned that he was trained classically and gave up opera after a season or two to do concert singing. These songs have lush or spare orchestral arrangements as the occasion demands. They are dramatic, even Hollywood-like, arrangements verging on schmalt, but a second hearing convinced me that he was among the finest tenors of the 20th century and the arrangements are "just right."
Scottish Songs for a Lifetime.......2007-05-12
If I was to be only able to carry one CD with me to a desert island, this one might be my choice. The poetry of Robert Burns is entirely inspiring. The vocal performance of McKellar is adequate to Burns' work. The orchestration is rich and appropriately simple. These songs will "stick to your ribs" and leave you longing for a visit to the old sod to personaly perceive the beloved ambiance they evoke.
Simply exquisite!.......2007-05-06
Who can sing like this today? Vocalion has done it again -- two of Kenneth McKellar's wonderful Decca recordings from 1961 and 1962 brought together for a wonderful vocal treat. There are things the lover of the English art song and ballad cannot be without -- Jennifer Vyvyan's lovely renditions of Michael Head's Foxgloves and Roger Quilter's Love's philosophy; Eileen Farrell's stentorian Sing to me by Sydney Homer; John Mark Ainsley's rhapsodic performance of Quilter's Go, Lovely Rose, and Kenneth McKellar singing Land of Heart's Desire, Sleeps the Noon in the Deep Blue Sky and Robert Burns' My love is like a red, red rose. Happily, these songs are preserved on this terrific release. McKellar had a wonderful, powerful and lyric tenor voice. His operatic and oratorio singing is moving on top of being very musical -- dynamics, portamento, etc., scrupulously observed and artistic; however, his sining of art songs, folk songs and ballads is exemplary and always, underscored ALWAYS moving and right on the mark. McKellar had a real affinity for this music and it simply erupts from the grooves (oops, I'm dating myself)!
The Songs of Robert Burns is lovely -- I defy anyone to listen to McKellar's rendition of My love is like a red, red rose, and come away without a tear in the eye. In my opinion, however, the true gem is the release of McKellar's Songs of the Hebrides. Vocalion includes McKellar's spoken introductions to these songs and it is incredible. One might think that it would sound trite, but McKellar is right on the mark and the introductions make the songs that much more memorable. Marjory Kennedy-Fraser is surely smiling down from heaven as this is the most beautiful and atmospheric recording of her Songs of the Hebrides. McKellar scales down his powerful voice for Land of Heart's Desire and it is ravishing. No one comes away unmoved. Again, who can sing like this today? I tried to think of any tenor or baritone singing today that could come close to this kind of a performance -- I could not think of one. Thank you Vocalion for bringing these performances back to light. Speaking of the recording, it is lush, with that beautiful early stereophonic sound preserved. For the lover's of the art song, ballad or folk song, you MUST have these performances.
Love and frustration.......2007-03-08
This recording has some wonderful Scottish songs by a super Scottish tenor. The difficult part for me is that I need the sheet music to go with one of the songs, but I had no luck locating it anywhere. There are other versions of the song ("My heart's in the highlands") available but none like this one. Is there any chance you could help me find it??
Sincerely,
Lyndall

Great debut forerunner to Thrillseeker..........2006-04-15
I got this album after purchasing Thrillseeker, which blew me away.
This CD only has a few tracks but it sets itself apart from normal metal albums. Its fast, heavy rhythms and insane drum beats makes it a great buy for fans of bands like: Heaven Shall Burn, Killswitch Engage, or The Haunted.
Great CD overall!

let's start with the obvious. they're awesome. i first saw these guys at the legion and liked them. congratulations on being signed with solid state and keep rocking. and buy the cd cuz its awesome. yeah...BUY IT RIGHT NOW!
kick ass metalcore baby. yeah........2004-11-04
Looks Fragile After All is one of the best debut hardcore EPs to come out of Lancaster ever. The drummer is so amazing. Yeah Matt, you're amazing. haha. No seriously. I really like this CD espiecially the first song contrary to popular opinion. Believe it or not the guitarist (JB) is known to "two-step" to his own beat. Mickey mouse was previously seen dancing and going insane at their show last night. When asked what he thought he replied, "Jesus Christ just returned".
If you got this far you just read one of the best reviews EVER!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Lovely instrumentals with a Celtic touch.......2000-12-23
The more familiar tunes ("Red Red Rose," etc.) sound great in their instrumental versions, as do the lesser-known pieces. Very nice, mellow record to play and relax to.
