5 out of 5 stars An album that will never get old.......2004-09-30

Kenton's arrangements in this particular album are among my favorites from his repertoire. While we've all heard Berstein's West Side Story tracks numerous times I'm sure (and if you haven't, they're certainly wonderful in and of themselves!), Kenton's interpretations are full of vibrant emotion. No matter how many times I listen to this album, each time brings out some of the most lavish flavors I've heard from a big band. Throughout the CD, you'll find yourself on a rollercoaster of mellows and climaxes that somehow makes the transitions so smooth you'll listen to it over and over....and over.....and over...

5 out of 5 stars Never cool anymore........2002-10-09

When I bought this record in 1965 my father said he would kill me if I played that record again. But I kept playing it over and over again. Only our neighbours didn't liked this record. The mellophonium section is 5 stars. Arrangements 5.5 stars and the whole band is heavenly. I still have the original Lp in MONO and Stereo and the Cd version. It's a shame Stan Kenton didn't lived untill he was 90.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2001-12-27

This is absolutely one of the most innovative interpretations of an American classic you will ever hear. Even if you have no idea of the contribution of Stan Kenton, it is virtually impossible not to be thrilled with this recording. For fans of Kenton, fans of Bernstein or fans of band music this is a sure winner.

1 out of 5 stars loud and boring.......2001-11-15

almost all the beauty of wss is lost.loud brass
work-not for indoor listening.couldn't give it away.

5 out of 5 stars If only they had used this for the original soundtrack..........2001-07-19

Lovers of big band jazz and serious brass sections will truly enjoy this. You will recognize the melodies imediately, but you will be literally blown away by Kenton's orchestra. You won't hear the original soundtrack again without a small feeling of regret that these arrangements didn't make it into the movie...

4 out of 5 stars Good example of swing.......2006-07-02

Not to put to fine a point of it - previous reviewers have mostly claimed that these sessions at times even surpass the original sessions, but that is a bit of an exaggeration. This is a really good example of swing nevertheless, recomended to fans of the Goodman's style defined in the 30's.
Incidently, the cd shares the title with a film made about Goodman, but this is not a soundtrack - the title is the same in order to make the record company cash in on the success of the film.

5 out of 5 stars King of Swing.......2005-06-21

Benny re-recorded his material in 1955 for a movie The Benny Goodman Story, with a few guests like Harry James, Lionel Hampton,...This is one of the coolest swing cd's I ever heard. Here you'll hear why Benny is the king of swing. All of his hits and more. A real must for every swing fan!

5 out of 5 stars The King of Swing.......2003-07-29

This is an amazing recording from 1955 that features Benny with an all-star studio orchestra featuring Harry James, Lionel Hampton, and Ruby Braff. These re-recordings of some of Benny's most famous songs are stunning replicas of vintage 1930s style swing a la Fletcher Henderson as they were meant to be heard, in clear, brilliant Hi-Fi sound. Some of these arrangements even come close to surpassing the original recordings, such as "Down South Camp Meetin'" (with the driving bass line provided by George Duvivier propelling the whole thing). Also, Benny himself sounds fresh and inspired in this session, playing with more fire and energy than in any other of his fifties recordings. Just one drawback, Bobby Donaldson and Don Lamond fail to capture the Krupa magic with their drumming as evident by "Sing, Sing, Sing" (Donaldson) and "Don't Be That Way" (Lamond). Wouldn't it have been great if Gene Krupa would have been present at this session with Goodman and James as he was in the film version? Nonetheless, this is a must-have BG CD, one that documents his real contribution to jazz.

5 out of 5 stars A Swinging Session.......2001-01-10

A swinging session with studio musicians recorded in the 1950s. Excellent Hi-Fi mono sound quality. Highly recommended.

I love this CD.
I have just about all of Eliane's CDs and this one is one of my
favourites; it sounds so fresh, so updated, Eliane is on
it at all times; and that particular way of hers of singing
is absolutely breathtaking, check cuts like: "A Long Story",
"Horizonte" and "Just Kidding", wow..... she leaves us wordless.

5 out of 5 stars Brazil Courtesy of Eliane.......2002-03-02

Eliane delivers a flavorful cornucopia of Brazilian influenced gems. She is by far one of the most rhythmically complex pianists this reviewer has ever encountered in this or any other genre (aside from Art Tatum ). Her playing is soulful, feminine and very Brazilian which is the very thing that makes this work so very sexy. Of particular note are 'Back in Time" which is a gumbo of driving Piano rhythms and chanting that really stirs the spirit and "Vida Continua (life goes on") which is an inspirational piece that is as tender as it is atmospheric. In a word this album is....Magnificent.

4 out of 5 stars Intricate arrangements and killer playing by Erskine & Berg.......1999-04-30

Eliane Elias' CD features intricate Latin-influenced rhythm arrangements. Peter Erskine, Bob Berg, and Andy Narrell play especially well. This is an excellent example of contemporary jazz meeting Latin in a very musical, beautiful style.

William "Count" Basie (1904-84) set the gold standard for Kansas City-style swing. Blue Note celebrates his centennial with the reissue of this Roulette recording, which was originally a double LP intended to mark the Basie band's silver anniversary in 1960. The sessions feature updated stereo versions of Basie's classic early hits, and the digital remastering has added more brilliance to Basie's pithy piano work, tight horn arrangements, and bluesy, in-the-pocket grooves. There's the uptempo riff tune, "Jumpin' at the Woodside," the Lester Young showcase, "Lester Leaps In," and the locomotive "9:20 Special." All-star horn players like trumpeters Thad Jones and Joe Newman and saxophonists Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Frank Foster are on the date. But Basie's greatest discovery, his "Number One Son," vocalist Joe Williams, steals the show with his grits-and-gravy rendition of "Sent for You Yesterday." This delightful two-disc set shows why Count Basie is jazz royalty. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The BEST of the Best!.......2005-06-20

This collection is a wonderful representation of what I believe is the greatest big band Count Basie ever assembled. The period of the mid-50's to early 60's had a groove that no band has ever matched, though some other bandleaders such as Harry James certainly tried. Frank Wess, Frank Foster, Freddie Green, Sonny Payne, Thad Jones, etc rival any lineup Basie ever put together.

I am guessing that much of this material was originally found on the Roulette label. If you want to hear some of the finest big band that ever lived, look no further than right here. If you do not have any Count Basie from this period, this is a MUST.

5 out of 5 stars the ultimate swing band.......2005-01-25

caout Basie had to disband his orchestra many times and start over..during his musical career....the band of this period which recorded for Roullet Records now under Blue Note...was propbably the best group. This is the same personel that did the Atomic Basie..actualy all the tunes are here but they are cleaned up..they are in stereo..and in 20 bit masterning..of course not the same performance as the original one..but who cares...this group of people can do no wrong even if you asked them play @ 5:00 in the morning...listen to their sense of swing that this whole band has...listen to every tune many times...each time paying attention to the different parts...listen to the rythm section..listen to the soloist..listen to the sax section..listen to the trumpet section..listen to their interaction..listen to the dynamics for the entire band...and now...go back and listen again to the whole thing...evey tune...it's so perfect and together it's unbeleivable...all of the sudden you feel it's only one guy playing and taping his foot...!! there will be no other band like this one ever again...read the players name.... every one could have been or were great solo artist.

5 out of 5 stars Count always had that swing.......2004-09-19

I've always dug Count Basie&always knew when He was playing on a Record or His stylings on the Piano because He always had a up-Beat&a Swing vibe to His Music. this Multi set showcases His depth&Range. His Band blows&throwdowns as well. tight Band all the way around but the Count always brings the rolls on the Keys.the Man was so Versatile&did so many things well.strong arrangements that not only showcased Count's chops on the Piano but also showcased His depth as a Band-Leader which is very strong. He is truly a Great Musical Treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Must HAVE CD for Bossa Nova fans.......2005-04-14

I love this music and I have heard over and over the standards with the original artists and I totally appreciate and adore them and will always be thankful for Jobim, Gilberto's, Stan Getz who all were major benefactors of this wonderful sound. However, it is always fun to make a new discovery which further deepens your appreciation of something you love and this is IT!!!! This CD is truly a gem in that it offers many voices you might not have yet heard to date anywhere and this will definitely open up an entirely new perspective on the music and the artists which sing it so well. I was really bowled over by Pery Ribeiro's voice - my, goodness it is an intense experience to listen to him so easily and melodically croon - absolutely gorgeous voice!!!! Also of note are: Doris Monteiro, Sylvia Telles, and Nana Caymmi.

4 out of 5 stars Way, way back, before Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd.......2000-08-26

A bossa nova compilation without a single track by Joao Gilberto? Of course that's not necessarily a bad thing, and it underscores the interesting selection of lesser-heard recordings in this collection. "The Story of Bossa Nova", while including a few more recent additions, concentrates on the original recordings by the first generation of singers and performers who first turned the now-classics into hits and paved the way for worldwide popularity.

Many of the compositions are the Jobim standards, but the early recordings, some dating from 1959 (contemporary with Joao Gilberto's first albums), show clearly their influence from the pre-rock North American popular music of the day, in their familiar orchestration and "crooner" feel. Pery Ribeiro's "Garota de Ipanema" has little of the easy-listening sound of the Getz/Gilberto and Jobim/Claus Ogerman versions, while some of the touches on Sylvia Telles' "Fotografia" come across like cheesy sound effects from "I Dream of Jeannie" (or worse yet, classic "Star Trek").

More recent recordings by Leila Pinheiro, Joyce, and Nana Caymmi keep things from sounding too dated, while an excellent instrumental piece by the Milton Banana Trio ventures deep into jazz territory. And Joao Donato's own recording of his composition "A Ra" stands out as one of the strangest pieces every to be called bossa nova, or anything else.

For novices, some of the compilations on Verve would probably give a better sampling of the best known recordings by the big names. But if you're ready to dig a little deeper and don't need yet another recording of Astrud's "Agua de Beber" in addition to the four you already have, "The Story of Bossa Nova" is worthwhile.

The liner notes by Gerald Seligman are brief but generally informative.

4 out of 5 stars Blue Note: A Story Of Modern Jazz (1996 TV Documentary).......2000-01-05

"Blue Note" is an excellent introduction to the post-Big Band sound of jazz. The major movements--bop, hard bop, post-bop, acid and jazz fusion--and most of the major players are covered here. I would also recommend watching the documentary to learn more about not just the recording label, but about the music if one wants to become an educated jazz fan. I gave it four out of five stars because there are a few tracks I personally didn't care for, but that is because I don't care for that style of jazz. But, on the whole, it's an excellent antidote to the soulless beast known as smooth jazz. An essential collection for the beginner or aficiando.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly misses the Note.......2006-01-01

Back in 1939 when Alfred Lion started Blue Note he had a vision of producing some of the finest jazz ever recorded and thanks to studio engineer Rudy Van Gelder this vision came true. Blue Note was jazz and then some. I contributed my little bit by buying a whole load of B/N LPs during the fifties and sixties, now of course I've had to buy them all over again on CD!

I bought this latest three-disc offering partly on the strength of the title, 'Blue Note: A story of Jazz' but really it should be 'Blue Note: A story of jazz and other related sounds' that will attract as wide a spectrum of buyers as possible. Judging by what is on two of these CDs Blue Note is just another contemporary label with bad packaging.

My preference is clearly for disc one, Classic Notes, offering the original Blue Note sound, despite a tedious 'My Funny Valentine' from Chet Baker it has 'Blue Train' by John Coltrane and 'September Second' with Michel Petrucciani, both cooking tracks. The fifteen on disc two, Contemporary Notes, mostly recorded since 2000 is passable, even though it has the novelty number, 'Don't Worry Be Happy' by Bobby McFerrin. 'Earthlings' by Pat Martino is my favorite. Disc three, Modern Notes, is where it all goes downhill with some extremely tedious offerings, eight minutes from Erik Truffaz with his 'Bending New Comers', Jason Moran manages to stretch 'Planet Rock' to nine minutes. Both these tracks sound just like musicians tinkering with their instruments for minutes on end in a very uncreative way. Amos Lee does a pleasant enough rendering of 'Colors' but can it even remotely be called jazz? The same question could equally apply to the dull 'Don't Explain' by Angela McCluskey. Unfortunately disc three is a million miles from the excitement and exuberance of real Blue Note jazz.

Part of my two star rating is because of the dreadful packaging. On the UK edition the track listings on the back of the box are unreadable. The artist's names are blue type on a blue background, the tracks are not numbered and the text is centred. Needless to say it is all in tiny type. The twenty page booklet (with eight great Francis Wolf photos) is equally amateurishly produced, again the track information, partly printed in blue, is in a light typeface which, in a domestic lighting environment, becomes virtually unreadable. The marketing folk at the label clearly couldn't care less about the buyer. Why should consumers have to put up with this amateur looking nonsense from so-called professionals?
