Product Description
Bandleader Lucky Millinder could not read music, nor could he play any instrument, yet he was a catalyst who could bring out the very best in many musicians he employed, above all he was a fantastic showman. Slipcase. Proper. 2002.

Customer Reviews:
comparing Lucky Millinder to Louie Jordan ??? (see review below).......2006-09-11
Louie Jordan was one of the greatest innovaters, musicians and entertainers of all time whose small combo changed the landscape of popular Black music of the day--- Lucky Millinder came later in terms of recognition as a solo artist and was one of the great R&B arrangers and writers in the early R&B scene but was i believe greater as a big band leader in the late 30's to the mid 40's (Let's note that Wynonie Harris and Sister Rosetta Tharpe both sang with Lucky's Big Band in 1945) into his r&b career (and was 8 years older than Louie Jordan)------ This double CD of Lucky Millinder is superb R&B with a large horn band and should not to be compared to the person who invented R&B and mabe even Rock & Roll for that Matter.

As a fan of Louis Jordan and other entertainers from his era, I was looking forward to listening to this project. However, Lucky was no Louis Jordan. This offering just didn't do it for me. I don't know that much about Lucky, so maybe I had the wrong expectations. It's not unenjoyable music, I was just expecting more. Check out Tiny Bradshaw for more consistent up-tempo material.

Customer Reviews:
Timeless vocal R&B at its best........2003-06-13
There is not a single track on this alblum that I don't at least like, if not absolutely love. This alblum contains the song "laundromat blues", which was one of the many songs blacklisted for radio play back then because it was thought too racy for the day. Heck, It's kind of racy by today's standards as well! The rest of the songs on this cd are very different however. They are soulful ballads full of pure soul and emotion. "Help me Somebody" is a prime example of this. I can picture the lead singer with a death-grip on the mic, belting out this wondeful song. This alblum is pure vocal R&B soul.

Customer Reviews:
PIONEERS OF SOUL.......2000-12-30
This CD shows the hard driving groove of the Five Royales at their best - guitar showmanship of Lowman Pauling, leads by Johnny Tanner and the fine harmonies that came from their Gospel days (Royal Sons) are briefly remembered before their risque and rocking secular explosion into the bluesy R&B that was just getting into the shooting star that launched the well-known "godfathers of soul". Listening to this disc shows that the spark was alive and well pre-1955 with these dudes - they had all the elements of the best soul groups - only their genre of music lacked a specific name. What was obvious then 'til now is the smooth arrangements, the perfect timing. It's as great to hear now as it was then.
