Album Description

'Sleep and Wake-Up Songs' is just a station on your way; it knows it's not your lover. It's a little shed; a lean-to constructed on the banks of some shaded stream between mountains. There is peace and quiet here. The late afternoon sun slants through logs set lazily on top of one another. There's a Les Paul resting against a fallen bough, but there are few loud noises, little reason to panic. The smell of cedars hangs in the air. There's a strange chill.

On 'Sleep and Wake-Up Songs,' Okkervil River and principal songwriter Will Sheff take advantage of a break between albums to present a small collection of five meditative songs that toss little boomerangs across the distance between what is and what could never be. They try on a loose-fitting felt suit of Tim Hardin folk-pop, wade until soaked in a misty psychedelic duet, strap on an electric guitar for a lark, stack the overlapping refrains of Sheff and Minus Story's Jordan Geiger into a Phil Spector ecstasy of sexual confusion, and finally strip things down and initiate a straightforward love song. These five songs have a thematic unity and a serious purpose, but the modesty of the EP format allows the band to carry them off with a candid sense of playfulness. Next spring will see a new full-length from Okkervil River; in the meantime, rest awhile in these songs.

For Okkervil River fans, this is a must buy. The title Sleep & Wake-Up Songs is very suiting for the album. The album opens with "A Favor" which is an instant Okkervil River classic. The album then slows down, but picks up again on the closing track "No Hidden Track". The contrast between "sleepy" songs and "wake-up" songs is perfect for an EP. Rarely will I buy an EP, but I can't imagine this album being any longer or shorter. Will Sheff continues to improve his songwriting yet still keeping Okkervil Rivers' distinct sound. Again, this is a must buy for Okkervil River fans. For those who don't know Okkervil River, I suggest checking out Down the River of Golden Dreams or Don't Fall In Love With Everyone You See.

If this man ever really cared about his father, he wouldn't release such sad sad (as in horrible) music. If he gave half a damn about his father, I doubt that he'd reach into America's pocketbook and sell his father's soul for money and fame. What a sad person this man is, I'd never do that to my father. Buy this single and prepare to die a fat nobody 20 minutes after visiting your local mall.

As an avid Green Day fan, of course I love every song off the American Idiot album...but this song is really deep and truly heartbreaking when you listen to it's lyrics. Some people say it is about September 11th, but it is really about Billie Joe's father, who died when he was only 10. Even though the video for this hasn't officaly aired in America yet, I have seen it and personally I didn't like it because of it's war message. It has nothing to do with the song. But it grew on me. This song is not one to miss, so pick it up as soon as possible!

          For a band that is so offen rediculously refered to as 'bubble-gum pop,' the Strawberry's sophmore effort stands out as perhaps their best, and a testament to how great psychedelic music can be.

          When I bought this selection back in 1968 I was only 17 years old.We where at the peak of the Phycodelic era,and their previews hit "Incense & Peppermints " had been great.The title of this albun didn`t mean much to me by that time,so the only consideration was that this group was the performer of above mentioned song.There are a few really good songs in this album,but the main concern for me ,the principal value of it,32 years after, are the memories that the whole album brings to me.By the time I bought the vinyl album,I didn`t realised that "TOMORROW" could be so near,so close to me.Friends.... it`s definitely...."TOMORROW".Buy this CD,particularly if you,like me, still want to enjoy the happiness of your youth.That`s why I give it a 5 stars.
