From Jazziz
Having made its debut in 1990, the Denver-based trio Dotsero has been part of the smooth jazz landscape since the early days. But despite a handful of picture-perfect efforts, the band has rarely received its due popularity. Hopefully all that will change with West of Westchester, Dotsero's debut for Russ Freeman's Peak label, which was produced by the Rippingtons' leader.

Freeman adds numerous exotic and electronic effects to Dotsero's core sound of lighthearted melodies driven by Michael Friedman's plucky bass frolicking beneath Stephen Watts' optimistic sax lines. The title track, a cover of a classic Bob James' tune, begins with a playful blend of David Watts' echoing wah-wah guitar and trip-hoppy jungle percussion over Kip Kuepper's hypnotic electric keyboard riffs. Watts' rich alto melody on "Lodo Mojo" is backed by more wah-wah echo and a dreamy ambiance, all enhanced by a shaker percussion groove.

Freeman also helps Dotsero get beyond its usual bouncy, happy-go-lucky demeanor. "Then There Was You" features a more robust approach from Watts and a thick, thoughtful bassline from Friedman. Though Kuepper is not an official member of the trio, the Dotsero boys defer to him frequently, allowing him to stretch and improvise on electric piano for a Crusaders-like retro effect on "Lodo Mojo."

5 out of 5 stars West of Westcester by Dotsero.......2005-09-09

This is an absolutely great cd. Dotsero is an incredible group and you can't go wrong with any of their music. However, this is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars come east my boys come east.......2005-07-07

I am so sorry that I just heard of these guys. Thank God for the internet. I heard some samples of their latest cd(Fresh Pants) and just fell in love with these guys. I enjoyed every song. I had to go back and check out some of their previous work and decided to get West of Westchester and I was not disappointed. I usually don't buy music that is 5 years old but I had to make a change with this group. These guys should be in DC., and Virginia. I gurantee they would be loved here. There music is so distinct and fresh. The rhythm is fantastic. I am living in an apartment so when I play these guys I put on the earphones so I can all the sounds. This cd and their latest is a must have. Do yourself and try any of their music and you will be very happy that you did.

4 out of 5 stars Cd Review.......2002-02-24

I love this CD I have listened to Dotsero for 10-11 years and their music is great..at least to me.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh new groove........2001-04-14

This sounds like the Rippingtons, Spyro Gyra, and Norman Brown combined culminating in a fresh new groove. If this group can make a sound like this, I'm certainly going to find their previous efforts. It starts out with a Bob James classic which I'm surprised that this group really improved upon. From there the compositions are quite creative, but you have to listen to them individually and give each a chance to grow on you. These compositions are definitely not boring. The recording quality is excellent also. Smooth jazz seems to just keep getting better with groups like Dotsero.

I currently live in the Bronx, New York. I was stationed in Colorado Springs,Co at Falcon AFB. I met the great jazz group Dotser at a place called the Dublin Down in the Springs. Ever since, I have been in love with their music. I feel they are the most underrated jazz band in the world. I once told their lead saxophonist that they should come to the "Blue Note" in New York. I know they would turn it out!! This CD is another outstanding masterpiece. All the songs remind me of driving down the Highway just before the sun goes down. The smooth musical sounds on this CD will definitely put you in world of content and happiness.
